Thank you to the Beanies who recommended Sky Castle which I’ve spent the afternoon and evening binging and catching up on. Whew.

This show reminds me of the old 70s show called Dallas where the characters were all rich and wore beautiful clothes but were awful people. I don’t remember feeling sorry for any of them.
Sky Castle on the other hand is full of people leading desperate lives out of an intense sense of self-loathing and no sense of self-worth. They are all so pitiful.

It makes me think of a co-worker who has a few Korean students that live with him and his wife during the school year here in my town. He told me of the schedule one of the boys described for him at home in Korea. It was sad that the only time he had to just relax and play was after 11 at night!

Somehow we have placed such a high value on education and “getting ahead” that the lives of children are what suffers.
I am enjoying the show as they draw back the layers of each character and family and we see the sense of weakness and lack of self-worth they all carry with them but force it upon their children to make up for it.

Being a parent is hard work – but being a parent who feels that our kids need to live out OUR dreams is sad.

With that said/written, I’m still loving the show and I think that the bratty girl genius is going to end up studying with the kind boy who is her rival. Hopefully that will change her from being such a self-absorbed brat. What a role she has to play – I wonder if she likes playing such a selfish brat!

Enough of my long missive. I just wanted to thank all the Beanies who recommended this show. I’m still not sure if it is really a satire or makjeng type of drama – but I’m all in at this point!
Now to finish episodes 5 and 6!

I only today heard someone describe it as “makjang”. It doesn’t have a single makjang element that I’ve seen. But then I tend to think of makjang as being pointless conflict designed to propel the show forward in the absence of a coherent plot.
There is nothing pointless about anything these writers do. It’s razor sharp.

Maybe I don’t understand Makjang – but you are correct, the writing in this show is quick and sharp. At this point, I can’t really hate anyone – as they aren’t evil as much as totally broken inside trying to be something they aren’t.
It really is well done. Thanks for the recommendation!

Dallas, ha! I was thinking Desperate Housewives, but Dallas might be more accurate.

I don’t think I ever watched Desperate Housewives, but unfortunately, I remember Dallas far too well. It must be those fantastic dresses that they wear around the house…
If I remember right NO one wore an apron to serve their family dinner.
oh this show has me hooked line and sinker.

Desperate Housewives was in on it’s own jokes, but I think of Dallas as a soap opera on steroids (or with a bigger budget). Not sure I’ve ever seen more than five minute snippets of Dallas.

Oh yes @kudoran – I really didn’t know what to expect and am very pleased with it. Haven’t finished episode 5 yet but I can’t wait to see what happens to them all. Especially the bratty *genius* daughter.
