I honestly do not know how to feel. I’m glad Korean dramas are getting the international recognition they deserve and all but I don’t know if they’ll be able to create the essence Kdramas have. To me its different. We’ll just have to wait and see. I hope DB does at least an overview of the episode telling us their thoughts.

Yeah, I feel like you’d have to watch it from a fresh perspective. I think because of culture, it’d be difficult to capture the same feeling. I do like American TV/Film but I have yet to see an American remake that’s really good, like @kaybee says…it’s never seems like a good thing. I’m going to still check it out of course, but with hesitation. The team and the cast seem decent for this. Might be good as it’s own thing but probably can’t expect the same charm/ essence.

It is never a good day when Americans decide to remake other countries’ movies. On the plus side, like @ketchup said, it’s nice to have them notice kdramas. Especially since China is out these days. I’d just rather they got less lazy and started reading subs, so the original works would get picked up by their broadcasting companies and seen by a wider public, instead of the soul-less remakes they tend to put out. (NOT saying that American movies, or even their remakes, are soul-less, just the ones that aren’t remakes of American movies/shows to begin with. And obviously not all people who don’t like to read subs are lazy.)

I totally agree @kaybee it would be awesome if they decided to broadcast the original material. It could happen, in a perfect world, maybe someday.

*calls up Thomas More* Yep, it’s definitely utopian, even Thomas thinks so.

I wonder how much they’ll actually advertise that it is based on a Korean drama, or if it’ll just be presented to the general public as a new show. D: I mean articles I have read so far do mention the drama, but how many people would actually go check it out I wonder. :/

However, I think the team/cast seem promising. Freddie Highmore is super talented (anyone watch Bates Motel?) and Daniel Dae Kim is producing. It’s nice to have some who’s Korean on the team. Hopefully he understands how to better capture what makes the story special from a Korean drama standpoint. I feel torn that the guy who created House is there. I really liked House, but it’s definitely a completely different show beside the doctor component.

It’s not the remake in general that is problematic, but the American TV format that creates problems. Kdramas remake other Asian countries shows all the time and vice versa. However, most Asian made tv shows are “mini series”, they have a finite episode length. American tv shows are serials and the typical season is 23 episodes. So once the first season ends, the content for following seasons will be original. Plus, if a show is a hit whose to say it won’t be on air for 10+ seasons.

Yeah!! I’m really curious how the format will translate (or not translate). It’ll have to be quite different since it wouldn’t be made with a finite end in mind.

They might have to drag the plot unnecessarily to fill on the episodes if they want to continue with more seasons

Either way it will be hard for them to create more seasons without creating original content. I am seeing this as less a possible remake and more a stealing a general storyline.

He is a good actor – I’m not saying he isn’t, but… I mean, after seeing Bates Motel… I’m a little uncomfortable with this choice. It JUST ended and they didn’t even try to change his looks a bit – so I’m still seeing a creepy serial killer. And remembering Joo won’s version of the character makes it even MORE wrong.

They filmed the pilot while he was still doing Bates Motel in Vancouver, if I recall. Maybe that’s why they didn’t change his looks? I do know what you mean though about seeing him as a serial killer, but I’m hoping he’s good enough to make us see him as a totally different character. It’s too early to really say. I mean, before Bates Motel I would have never thought he’d play that role so well given his previous work.

You’re totally right! It’s just a teaser after all, not the actual trailer. I do hope they give him a more homely look, something to smooth the transition and help us separate the characters – the actor as good as he is can’t do all the job after all. And then, well, I LOVED him in August Rush, where his character’s tone was much more similar in terms of warmth and innocence.

I loved August Rush too! Even though it’s totally cheesy. I really liked that movie 😀
