      Jing Wan FTW!
I have been checking out Like a Flowing River and am again wowed by his brand of enigmatic and understated strength of his acting.

I am definitely going to check it out. Thank you!!!!!

It is made by the same production company as Nirvana in Fire, and focuses on the period after the Cultural Revolution in China which we do not see often in Dramaland. Like a Flowing River is definitely a slow burn, but it is incredibly well written, directed and of course, well acted! My parents who are from that generation (although they did not grow up in China) are enthralled by the show.

“Like a river!!” Whoops, wrong drama. 😉
        Thank you for the recommendation!

riding the comments , I watched NIF last year, was my 1st C-drama , loved it ! Checked NIF2 but was not as the same level.

        @giegie0384 recommended me
        – The disguiser (saving it for later, I smell of binge watch obsesssion),
        – Suddenly this summer (Giegie I binge watched it , couldn’t keep up with the plan of one ep a day ^^’ , it was very good <3 and realistic, thank you 🙂 ),
        – Story of Yangxi palace (might start it this week or saving it for later, not sure if I can stop myself from binge watch again ^^')

So for a new C-drama watcher, do you have any reco for good dramas, read some comments so as long as it's not dragging , I'm fine with any period : historical like NIF, modern like Suddenly this summer . Thanks a lot in advance 😀 !
I should check AvenueX reco' also, since she also recommended Suddenly this summer ^^

Sadly, I haven’t found any other C-drama on the same level as NIF, but I can recommend:
-Princess Wei Young (addictive and great OTP)
-Prince of Lang Ling (my first C-drama, magical, drags a bit in the middle)
-When A Snail Falls in Love (20 eps, modern, crime, Wang Kai), – A Love So Beautiful (cute, high school).
          – Scarlet Heart, the original. I just love the OST and beautiful shots. 30-35 eps I think.

wow thanks for the several reco’ , I’ll add them to my to watch list ^^ .
I didn’t know that Scarlet Ryeo was an adaptation, I dropped the Korean version at ep4, wasn’t my thing and didn’t have that much time back then, it’s hard to pick up a drama already dropped but maybe I’ll give a try to the Chinese version ^^

            just checked there’s a season 2 for the C-drama Scarlet Heart, it’s a spin off ? or not ?

I can’t believe I’ve watched them all lol.
Come to think of it, I have seen a lot of C dramas but there is no place like DB to share thoughts etc beside viki and the ladies at Problematic.

@kudoran Scarlet Heart is nice, but never ever watch Scarlet Heart 2, the sequel. It is awful 😆

@wishfultoki ok , it’s fine ’cause I already have so many shows on my to-watch list *notes do not watch the season 2* x)

@kudoran You are in good hands with @giegie0384 who is much more well-versed in C-drama than me! But I have watched more C-dramas this past year and am excited about the rising quality. Nirvana in Fire is my absolutely favorite drama in all Dramaland, no contest.

The Disguiser is also made by Daylight Entertainment which made Nirvana in Fire I & II and the currently airing Like a Flowing River! If you like Wang Kai and a solid police procedural, you might want to check out A Snail Falls in Love.

The Story of Yangxi Palace is definitely pretty addictive featuring a very strong heroine (I think almost unrealistically so), but I got a bit haremed out around 40ish episode 😅 but plan to pick it up again soon. I have downloaded Suddenly This Sumemr per AvenueX’s recommendation and plan to watch it on the plane next week!

If you are in the mood for a fluffy drama almost without angst, my favorite is Love O2O. It is a drama I still rewatch when I need a quick mood lifter. The SML is Bai Yu (ML of Suddenly This Summer) who also starred this year in Guardian which AvenueX is obsessed with (I myself couldn’t quite get into….)

Many (including me) find A Love So Beautiful really sweet and satisfying. It is basically an unofficial Chinese adaptation of Itazura Na Kiss but with a much nicer although still tsunderey male lead. Accidentally In Love is a funny and silly drama but has lots of heart and a kickass heroine. It is great if you want to watch something to turn your brain off. @jenmole and @sicarius recently have fallen in love with another campus drama When We Were Young which I plan to check out very soon.

If you like fantasy historical drama, I definitely recommend Three Miles of Peach Blossom with Yang Mi and Mark Chao. (also going by Eternal Love but there is another drama with identical name.) The story is really epic and engrossing and Mark Chao is absolutely magnetic . It becomes crack when they get to the 3rd world, around 32nd episode when they reunite.

wow so much details, thank you very much 😀 !!!

I kinda have a slump with Kdrama, still watching them (Sky castle is daebak!!!!) but starting new ones doesn’t tempt me that much.
C-dramas seem like longer than K-drama so it might change my watching habit, maybe live watch Kdrama and have a Cdrama as filler , might try that ^^’ .

I’ve watched “It started with a kiss” many years ago when I watched some Tw drama along with Hana Kimi Tw ^^’ , it’s been a while I haven’t watched any Tw drama though ^^’ (last one was Just you) ,same goes with Jdrama since Kdrama took all my time…

I’ll add those reco’ to my to watch list, seems like AvenueX is well-known too so I’ll check more of her videos.

            @kudoran
A Love So Beautiful is a C-drama filmed in 2017, and I have not yet seen the Taiwanese adaptation, but I know there are a lot of fans for the original and its sequels, like @isthatacorner. I am from Taiwan but have seen shamelessly few Tw-dramas. My favorite might be the older drama In Time With You from 2011. The male lead Chen Bolin’s bedrooms eyes are absolutely dreamy and the heroine is deliciously complex. It is a great friends-to-lover drama which even prompted a Korean remake.

My first C-drama was that one classic mainland production ROMANCE OF THE 3 KINGDOMS. Although it was based on Luo Guanzhong’s novel, more than half of it was true to the history which got me hooked pretty fast despite being overwhelmed with so many characters. Fortunately I watched it with a couple of friends who were well versed in history.

Winter is my favorite time for historical C-dramas because they are pretty long. I just finished “The Story of Yangxi Palace” I was hooked on the beautiful, intelligent, talented and ruthless ladies of the harem and their struggles. It felt real to me more than the main character.

@kimbapnoona I heard about “In time with you” and its good reviews, have added it on my to-watch list (but I think the Korean version wasn’t that well received ^^’)

@kiara : “Winter is my favorite time for historical C-dramas because they are pretty long.” I watched NIF during the fall, but I think that winter suits the mood better indeed 🙂

@kudoran, it’s When We Were Young 2018…that I absolutely fell in love. There’s a 2016 but I think the synopsis is different and doesn’t seem like my kind of thing.

@jenmole glad that I added the good one (2018) on my to-watch list, the picture reminded me of Sicarius posts with the red school uniform ^^

@sicarius I’ve seen many Beanies raving about it, the pineapple and so on (and the girl nobody cares about ? don’t even know who she is but seems like there’s some fast forward to do)
Hana Yori Dango was my 2nd drama , left a very deep impression and started my drama journey; was my first time having my heart crushed by noble idiocy, evil mother and so on . I can’t listen to Planetarium w/o getting super super sad </3 ; the ost was quite good : Kizuna is one of my fav'
so Hana Yori Dango my sweat honey (yep I wrote sweat for a reason =P) maybe I'll watch your Chinese cousin, much later, maybe for 2019 2nd half

@all sorry for all those comments, didn't expect it when I asked for some reco ^^'

@kudoran Glad you enjoyed Suddenly This Summer. And you’re welcome! ^^
I second Kimbapnoona’s recs below. I loved both A Love So Beautiful and Love 020. (Just ignore the bad kisses in L020) Yang-yang is a great onscreen kisser but the girl is just uggggh! ALSB’s ending is one of my favorite endings ever! And yess, how did I forget to recommend Ten Miles Of Peach Blossoms? Drama made me cry. Mark Chao is love! Do check them out when you have time.

          @kimbapnoona *bows*
Btw, I checked out ep 1 of Game Of Hunting the previous week and I didn’t really like it? It’s well acted and cinematography is really good but the story (or stories about business) is just not my thing. And I love Huge, he’s pretty and cute and all but him acting cute is just not cute. Lol.

          2
          6

I will add Game of Hunting to my list to check out! I love Hu Ge but I cannot imagine him acting cute!

Have you watched Heavy Sweetness, Ash-like Frost? The first 20 episodes or so are such cracky fun, but inevitably it took a turn to the melo and I put it on hold. Is the story satisfying enough to bear all the angst, @giegie0384?

            1

@kimbapnoona He’s an ass in the drama. Steals his terminally ill friend’s girlfriend (who is his ex way back in college). I think I’m just not used to him romancing someone, as I’ve only seen him play serious roles. I was cringing watching his romantic scenes in GOH.

I have watched Ashes last year. Phoenix is love! <3 I loved ep 1-25 (best eps imo) but it started to get draggy from ep 25-45. I liked the demon princess but her loveline took too much airtime, and it started to get repetitive and boring. Though the middle part is draggy I thought it’s not that bad, and the drama did a great job in developing the second lead’s character. Sadly, it’s at the expense of the main leads airtime and character developement. So the Demon Lord part and ending felt rushed. It’s still worth watching. Just ff through the boring scenes. 😀

@giegie0384 “ALSB’s ending is one of my favorite endings ever” this is so tempting, should I just start ALSB instead of trying the new crop of Kdrama, hmm, I’ll let you know 😉

I’ve seen some reviews about Ten Miles Of Peach Blossoms/eternal love , might check it for the hype, maybe for spring ^^ (already have so many things to watch x) )

@kudoran It is! I just love the ending so much. Left me satisfied but at the same time wanting more. It’s mostly because of the lead’s chemistry. Hui Yitan & Shen Yue are just so natural on screen partners.
And I see you’ve already started watching the show. 😉
