A notif for ALL the book lovers, young beanies, and adult beanies who still love reading youth novels. Because this TOTES sounds like an innovative sci-fi/mythology Kdrama in the form of a BOOK!! Color me eager!😁🤩
DRAGON PEARL BY YOON HA LEE
Well for me, this means a lot more than what I’ve already said. Because the PJO and HoO series basically shaped more than half my youth and Kdramas shaped more than a quarter (And I’m unashamed to say it aloud!😄), this book sounds like the PERFECT blend! Best of both worlds! A love child!(lol)
Actually, I didn’t love the idea of Rick Riordan hiring other writers and launching a line of other-myths-books, mainly because it seemed like milking cash cows and also murking/unnecessarily complexing up HIS universe he built for years and made us fell in love with. I still think so. Plus I gave a go to the Indian myth book which I dropped after only few chapters. And I NEVER drop books(😋). But this…this I can’t ignore, for obvious reasons. After all, we beanies are already tempered and burned by so many bad Kdramas, so trying this book won’t do any harm, right?
And you guys do not have to have even heard of Rick Riordan in order to read this book! His books and this can be treated unrelated by the readers who’re not familiar with the PJO universe!

Here are some interesting quotes by Yoon Ha Lee ’bout the book.
RICK: I’m fascinated by the way you wove Korean mythology into a space opera. Did you grow up with stories about fox spirits, dragons, and goblins?

YOON: I did! I spent half my childhood in South Korea, and I had Korean storybooks about mythological creatures, and I liked reading folklore and folktales. Also, my parents would sometimes tell stories to my sister and me. They had this frustrating habit of telling me half of one and then saying, “Well, I don’t remember how it ended . . .”
.
RICK: Your main character, Min, is cunning and deceptive, as a fox should be. Would you call her an anti-hero?

YOON: I think that’s a fair description, yes. She’s clever and determined, but her main solution to trouble is to lie or trick her way out of it!
Sounds like one of our favourite Kdrama heroine types, yes?
.
RICK: Your characters’ powers—shape-shifting, Charm, controlling weather—are so cool. If you could conjure any snack food with Sujin’s magic spork, what would it be?

YOON: For pure Korean junk food, I would have to go with shrimp crackers. My grandfather used to give me pocket change to buy some from the corner store in Seoul
