Goodbye Sky Castle!

The finale didn’t go out with a bang but it was still a satisfactory end to a good run. A few things that struck me and liked:
1) Woo Joo dropping out of school – he couldn’t have just continued with his life after such a traumatic experience.
2) Prof Cha and Seung Hye – finally I understand why Seung Hye tolerated him all this time. They did love each other but his egoistical, perfectionist and control freak personality made life intolerable for her. I’m glad he realized that being a good Dad is not just making his children succeed and in turn sour his relationship with them.
3) Jin Jin – putting the new resident in her place right away.
4) Kay – free at last. Why did Coach Kim keep Kay in that isolated place when it’s obvious Kay need not be? It wasn’t for Kay’s good. Coach Kim just didn’t want anyone to know she has a disabled child and much less be seen in the public with one.
5) Another Super Coach – of course! Did anyone think it’s gonna stop at Coach Kim’s incarceration? Some viewers thought Coach Kim is somehow free to go and has gone back to ruin more lives. I don’t think that was a set up for Season 2 but rather that there will always be coaches like Coach Kim and parents who demand such services. Some things don’t change.
6) Things don’t change but people can choose how to react to them – the educational system is brutal and change if any, will take time. Show’s message is for parents to love their children so that the children can cope with the stress. Sure, we see that a parent’s love can also go very wrong.
7) Young Jae – we see in the finale the other side of Young Jae’s parents. They weren’t always horrible. I’m sure they loved him and he was their life but somehow, getting into med school became so important that it overrode everything else. The goal became more important than life itself.
8) Who killed Hye Na? I read viewer’s frustrations and disappointment that Hye Na’s killer was never truly revealed. I admit I was curious but I am glad the last episode wasn’t dedicated to this point. Sky Castle isn’t a whodunit. The show is about family, parent-child, education’s and society’s issues and ills. The ending was on point in those aspects. My take on Who Killed Hye Na?
– caretaker (otherwise why was he implicated?)
– Coach Kim – because Hye Na stood in the way of her grand plan
– society – corruption, stolen papers, discrimination and unequal treatment meant the poor and disadvantaged children like Hye Na tend to lose.
– Seo Jin – she stabbed Hye Na’s heart when she told her she’s nothing but a nuisance and mistake in her Dad’s life.
– Prof Kang – he chose his career over the girl who he later found out was his daughter. Some people asked “Will Prof Kang have turned over a new leaf if Hye Na wasn’t his daughter?” I think not.
– Hye Na – she played with fire and got burnt. Some mistakes are costly and this one proved to be fatal.

Overall a good finish to a really awesome show!

Agreed with your take on who killed Hyena. While the estate guard seemed to be the executor for Coach Kim (and otherwise why he received such a big bag of cash from Teacher Jo), so many people contributed to her death or her becoming a monster if not killed by Coach Kim.

I did question the writer’s choice of killing her off in this drama but the ending we have now proved this to be the pivot this story needs to progress to a more hopeful end for all those concerned.

Sky Castle will no doubt enter the list of all time kdrama classics. A big salute to the writer, director, the crew and the amazing cast. (I can’t make the decision whether Mrs Kang or Coach Kim is the best performer here.)

Now, I really want to check out the previous works of this writer. Any view on The scale of Providence?

I don’t know about The Scale of Providence nor her work just prior to Sky Castle but I had watched Gaksital or Bridal Mask. Sure, it was an adaptation but it was very good. I love it!

The ending credits showed who killed Hye Na. The security guard was wearing red sweater.

Now that I think of it, I like that we didn’t see how she was killed. I don’t think I can stomach to see her final moments leading to her tragic death. It was very senseless and heartbreaking. Her confidence got the best of her in the end – she thought just because she could get Soo Jin and the other mothers to squirm in the palm of her hand and fight against the school system, that she could do the same thing with Coach Kim. But what she didn’t know was that this lady was full on psycho – she already staged the death of her husband, staging another death won’t be as hard especially when Hye Na was a complete nobody to her. 💔 really heartbreaking that she didn’t get to finish her fight and that didn’t get to feel that love and sense of belonging she was longing for.
