Romance Is A Bonus Book just did a thing about destroying damaged books, but THERE IS ANOTHER WAY !
Long long ago I was in Borders Books to get the new Harry Potter And The Goblet of Fire the day it came out… when I got to the front of the line with my new prize I asked about the stacks of the book that they had behind the counter. Turns out they were defective, dozens of them. After being assured that the text was all there and readable, I went home with my very own “limited edition misprint” as he called them, instead of a regular copy.
Unfortunately that’s the rarity. Publishers usually can’t even give away misprints like that.
Pulp them and give them fresh life as new books, I like that philosophy.
In this case it was to bookstore doing it, not the publisher. Doubt the publisher even knew about it, except that they eventually didn’t get as many returns as they should have.
Anyway, I like having my “special” book, even if it isn’t really very special. I think there were many thousands of them at stores all across the country, and the internet seems to think there were similar errors on other Potter books.

Aww, I love this story. That book’s like a rescued stray pup. Extra special because it’s different.
