Sometimes I think the golden days of kpop may have already past. I was revisiting some old songs, and I think I’ve got a pretty good case with this music video. The makeup! The synthesizer! The dance! This is surely kpop in its purest form.

You’re not alone in thinking this! Recent K-pop follows Western trendy sounds more closely instead of incorporating parts but mostly doing its own thing. In my book, a chorus is not a chorus if it’s just 1 word chanted along to an instrumental breakdown.

Current K-pop songs are starting to sound alike. Idol groups are also starting to look alike. What I really liked about 2PM was how unique they looked compared to other boy groups at the time. They did the “manly” concept really well, with outfits , songs, and choreo to match.

I miss the “beast-dol” concept. Now, so many new groups go for cutesy looks. But also I may just be getting older and the boys are staying the same age.

Right? Kpop used to have a more distinct sound to identify it. I’m still a big fan of several groups and enjoy a ton of the music that comes out, but its original charm has shifted to a more westernized sound.

I love the sound kpop had back in the good old days. I haven’t heard this 2pm song yet but am saving for when I get off work!
