            These young Chinese guys are amazing. They are so young when they start out. I believe this kid just turned 20 in January, and wasn’t Dylan Wang (beautiful boy!) just 19 when he did Meteor Garden 2018? I think he’s just 20 years old as well. I also liked the young actor who played the male lead in “The Eternal Love,” which was obviously made on a very low budget, but had a lot of charm, nevertheless. (I’ll never forget the youngest Prince’s outfit, with that chicken feather fluff on the shoulders, in either neon yellow or hot pink. Oh my!) He did quite well for a beginner, and I remember wondering where on earth a 19 year old kid learned to kiss like he did. (I suspect that for some of these young actors/actresses, the first kiss they ever have is for these dramas, scripted and in front of cameras!)

            One reason I really am enjoying this drama is that I like the female lead actress and character. I hate to say it, but I rarely like the female characters in Chinese dramas. (I can’t stand the type of character that the actress who was the lead in A Love so Beautiful and Meteor Garden 2018 plays, or the way they play up her little girl figure and looks with the awful, cutesy outfits. I never am able to believe her as a female that the male leads find sexually attractive. There are plenty of Kdramas with a similar female archetype, and I dislike those as well. It ruins the show as a romance, because it’s like the romance is unbelievable. It’s nice to see a show with a main female character who isn’t a ditz, and knows how to speak up for what she wants. The lead female character in the other Chinese “young love” drama I’m watching (Le Coup de Foudre) is also the “super-dumb girl liked by super-smart boy” type, but her character is aware of – and depressed over – her inability to do well in school, and she’s a kind, nice, very likable person, and they don’t dress her up in silly, childish outfits or have her grin and giggle like a little girl, so she comes across as someone you can actually accept that the stiff, reserved, smart boy falls for.

            So well said, @vespertyne! As you may know I am a big fan of DiDi of all his natural charisma, but here I am just really impressed how good Lin Yi especially considering that this is his first role!

            I am completely enamored with MoMo who is strong, smart, and not afraid to express her displeasure or annoyance. I am enjoying Janice Wu’s Qiao Yi in Le Coup de Foudre because even though she is not booksmart, she is intelligent and as you said, kind, patient, and caring.

            Compare to most K-dramas, I actually find women characters in C-dramas much more empowered especially in historical and wuxia dramas. But I can see that some of the modern rom coms many C-dramas are still stuck in the yesteryear’s candy mode. I hope that strong heroines like MoMo will become a trend in C-dramas (or all dramas for that matter) and that will be fantastic news for women viewers like us!

            Is DiDi a nickname for Dylan Wang? I haven’t heard him called that.

            I thought he was pretty much THE reason to watch MG-2018, and while he obviously has a lot of room and time for improvement in his acting ability, I was surprised and impressed to learn that Daoming Si was his first role. He did quite well, and was really a stand-out in the drama. (I loved his clothes, too! Whoever was in charge of costumes really knew how to make him look extra good, although they obviously had a lot to work with, and would have had to make a huge effort to make him look even mediocre!) It’s kind of annoying that his next drama is Ever Night 2, and Wikipedia is showing it’s airing date as 2020. If you follow news about him, do you know why he’s waited so long to do another drama (since MG was actually filmed in 2017)?

            As for the female characters in Chinese dramas, I think I’ve been watching some older ones, like A Love so Beautiful, where I just loathed the female lead – both the way the character was written, and the way the actress played the role. I dislike Shen Yu as a female lead, for the reasons I have mentioned. PLus, when they pair her with those really tall, super good looking, popular new actors, it just makes her look less like an adult, and more like a little girl.

            I agree about the historical/fantasy Chinese shows. While she was annoying at the very beginning, I really ended up loving Yang Mi’s character in Eternal Love (one of my favorites!) But I couldn’t stand Ariel Lin or her character in I Will Never Let You Go, and ended up dropping it because I was so sick of looking at/hearing her and the second male lead, who also annoyed me. I struggled initially, but grew to really enjoy Yang Zi’s character in Ashes of Love (another favorite), and cut her character some slack due to the fact that she had ingested a pill to make her clueless about normal human emotions. That was a really fun drama.

            @vespertyne,
            Yeah, DiDi is the nickname for Dylan Wang. His Chinese name is Wang He Di, so many fans call him DiDi. Di Di of course also sounds like little brother in Chinese so it works well for such a cute young guy like him!

            Even though we have finished group watching the last episode yesterday, the discussion is still ongoing! You will find dozens of Beanies who love the show and love to talk about it!

            @vespertyne,
            Rabbit app is quite glitchy. To scroll through the chat I recommend using the mobile version, but for group watching desktop is much better.

            I agree that Dylan Wang did a great job in MG as his first role as well! Although he started out a little green but I could see good improvement by noble idiocy time toward the end! The crying scene of them together at the Chinese restaurant in London is quite moving. But Lin Yi here I feel is consistently good since episode 1 but perhaps the character is less challenging than Dao Ming Si. DMS is a character that is easy to hate in the beginning but Dylan Wang portrayed him with enough charm that I could still stomach watching a jerk who is prone to violence until he changes for the better! ๐Ÿคฃ

            I’m not sure why, but I don’t have access to the last episodes of PYHOMS available yet. I have only been able to watch 1 through 20, and per the channel I’m watching it on youtube, episode 20 isn’t available until tomorrow (16 hours from now, and it’s currently 12:31 PM PDT, so that means it’s available in the wee hours of tomorrow morning).

            Are you guys watching it without subs? That would be pretty meaningless for me, as I speak zero Mandarin.

            @vespertyne,

            Yes, we were watching raw episodes without sub, with me voice translating live since I am fluent in both languages. That was actually the biggest reason for the group watch -since the subbed episodes were not released 10 days after the raw episodes, I wanted to host the group watch so Beanies who are fans of the shows can watch it sooner! Yep, we are devoted drama addicts! ๐Ÿคฃ

            The subbed episodes of 21-24 will be released soon, tomorrow and Saturday. Enjoy!

      I don’t think I can make it for the group viewing, either. I easily caught up with all the earlier episodes b/c I binge-watched t hem, but the timing just doesn’t work out for me.

      However, I hope you will have a discussion here on your dramabean page, so that we can talk about it PYHOMS when it concludes. I haven’t found recaps of Chinese dramas that I enjoy reading. There are a few sites that do, but the recappers seem more interested in showing how witty they are, and they tend to go on and on about second lead actors/characters that I either actively dislike or am indifferent to. (I suppose one day I’ll get second lead syndrome, but so far I have liked the male lead better in all of the dramas I’ve watched).

      So, it would be nice to have somewhere to chat about PYHOMS once it’s concluded.

      question: Where on earth do Korean and Chinese casting directors manage to find all of the non-Korean, non-Asian actors to play various minor roles in these dramas? Because they are uniformly HORRIBLE! As in, laughably bad. And I’m reminded of this because of the previews of the next episodes of PYHOMS, where some obviously NOT British blonde girl, with a terrible non-British accent, and zero ability to act, is trying to claim Gu Wei Yi as her BF. The only half decent performances of these types of actors I’ve seen was in The Golden Eyes. The Russian art gallery owner and his estranged wife were both “fair to middling'” rather than horrible.

    That’s a very painful 5.30 am my time. 😆 I may love Gu Wei Yi but I love my sleep more. Will join you all in the fanwall fangirling! And catch up in the subbed eps whenever they’re out later this week.

    Have fun! It was amazing to hear your translation kimbap. With all the context you provide you’re even better than the subs. 💕

    ๐Ÿ™ I will still be at work, sorry.
    ๐Ÿ™ The show has ended/will end. Going to miss Wei-Yi and MoMo.

    For the last 4 episodes though, I wish MoMo would return some of the love back to Wei-Yi. He has been really attentive and caring towards her, but she has, most of the time, not noticed nor acknowledged that she was touched. I just want my boy to feel loved and appreciated!
