The Asian culture of parents controlling the lives of their adult children reached a level for me today while watching Five Children. And I mean it in a bad way.

So this almost 40 year old widower with 2 children, finally, after years of being alone, falls for an amazing divorced woman with….wait a minute this gets interesting…3 children of her own.

So our would be mother in law who lamented that her son should move on and find happiness, does everything she possibly can to break up this budding romance. The worst ‘you must leave your 3 children to your ex and raise my sons 2. That way I will approve this marriage’. I honestly never felt the need to verbally abuse an elder, as much as I did in this point. And horrifyingly this is not the only drama that has these issues.

So tell me, can a parent really say to their 35 plus age adult children, ‘I will not give you permission’ ‘how will you get married without my permission?’ ‘I don’t care what you do but I will never accept it’. Tell me these sentences are lost in translation!!! Tell me!!

I don’t think it’s Asian, at least it sounds just as absurd to me.

Parents can give their opinions but not in such obtrusive manner. There are of course extreme cases of fallout between parent and child over the marriage partner but they are mostly due to poor character of the partner than anything else.

Five Children is a great drama, one of my favorites. One reason is because of how Sang Tae handles his mom. She was ridiculous in her expectations and wants of a daughter-in-law. She rejected Mi Jung solely because of her 3 kids, so why would the parents of a single, never been married woman accept a widower with 2 kids? She was nothing but a hypocrite. Totally irked me but Sang Tae shut it down. I loved it.

I loved that even though his dad wanted him to apologize to his mom after Sang Tae basically told her show up, sit down and shut up at the wedding, he told him no.
