I am starting #RookieHistorianGooHaeRyung. While Saeguk dramas are not my cup of tea, I`m hoping I can add this into my Sageuk drama list which isn’t long to begin with.

Half an hour into Episode 1, it made me remember a K-netizen poll I read a while back – “If you could wear clothing from the past, which period would it be from?”

I gathered some Sageuk dresses from different eras. Let me know which one you guys prefer.

My vote goes to the Joseon era – not only beautiful and distinct, but the dresses look more comfortable to wear.

My vote is for Joseon. First because the sleeves don’t appear to cover the women’s hands as much, and like you I think they look more comforable. Though I like the look of the Goruryeo era too. For the men, a Goruryea warrior (see Gong Yoo in Goblin) wins.

Yes, that’s noteworthy on the sleeves in Joseon’s. I also notice that women have their hair tied back or braided during this time.

    They’re all so pretty!

Yes they all are! Shin Se Kyung’s hanbok was so pretty that it made me look up these traditional dresses of different times. I haven’t seen most of these dramas, but they’re nice to look at.

I hardly watch historical Hence had no idea about these! They all are so pretty to look at but I can’t imagine walking around with any of these 🙂
Even in rookie historian you can tell how much she has to lift up all the fabric to move quickly.
But the pastel color ones really looks nice.

Same! When I first read that poll, I was like – huh there are actually differences to the dresses?

I still can’t easily distinguish which dresses are from which time (I spot some difference tho), but I can def pinpoint if a Sageuk drama is from Joseon. They look not too overly decorated yet still very beautiful. I believe most of the dramas I saw are from Joseon too – Love in the Moonlight, The Moon Embraces the Sun…. (trying to rack my brain of Sageuk dramas I have seen and can only come up with these for now 🤣)

    Commenting on this late hehehe.
    I’m Three Kingdoms trash tbh.
    (Goguryeo, Baekje, Silla)
And Goryeo is nice too. Especially for hair.

However I do love the fighting outfit for men in Joseon. It’s very flattering and practical. You dont have any pictures here, but if you’ve seen Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, then this style here:

I also really like the Magistrate uniform from Joseon lol.

Honestly the high waist line of the Joseon female hanboks really put me off for a long time. I just don’t think I’d find them comfortable with my body shape, plus for whatever reason I just like Baekje and Silla’s style more, followed by Goguryeo and Goryeo.
But I think they’re all beautiful.

I like that in Joseon, men’s hair are tied up. Compared to Shilla; they have it let down. But I only saw Hwarang to make this statement.

If you have time, do a post like this! I have no idea why I had a hard time looking up male clothings. And I only shared the dresses of characters from well off families. I guess there’s not much difference in clothings if you were a peasant from different eras?

The top knot is a good look for sure. I do like IU’s hair in the pics you shared though, the most out of all the females.

        Oooh yes good idea!!!
Well no there would be still a difference. The waist line of the girls would change depending on the era for sure. But peasant clothing is always much simpler.
