Me on New Year’s Eve:

I just said this to myself last night but I couldn’t bring myself to study. I HATE studying metabolic pathways because I feel like I’m torturing myself.

Now I am off to watch Let Me Hear Your Song Jae-rim ep 4…

In undergrad, I was a math minor. I actually love math and enjoyed most of my courses. However, in my last year I took a graduate course in mathematical logic. It remains the hardest course I’ve ever taken. I used to wake up every morning thinking, “I’ll work hard and I’ll finish my problem set.” I’d go to sleep feel disheartened usually (although I did end up working a lot). I ended up doing well in the course, but I swear that, for the first 3/4 of the semester, I used to have nightmares about failing (I’ve never been afraid of failing a course before). I think I spent ~20 hours a week just on that one course.

I love Biochem but I always get scared whenever I take my exams that it later developed into something I really hate. I hope I’ll be able to pass my biochem subjects this semester especially the one with metabolism so my love for the subject will return…

Oh, I understand that feeling! I hate writing exams and I’m not a natural test-taker. I have to prepare a lot harder for writing them than some of my friends.

If it’s any consolation, after I finished that logic course, I thought I would never look at a logic textbook or problem ever again. For the first two years of law school, that was true. However, this summer, I opened my textbook from that course, started re-learning some of the stuff I learned from that course, and I find that I enjoy (and understand) the content much more. My conclusion is that school and performance stress tends to sour the experience of learning, but that, once there’s some distance from tests and exams, learning becomes fun again.

Me too, though I never keep the promise.

But I like the idea of New Years. I know everything doesnt magically change, but for one moment it reminds me of opening a new notebook and running your hand over that pristine piece of paper.
