Melo Suits Me Ep 3-4:-

1) Occupational hazard – I cannot watch the workings of film/drama industries portrayed incorrectly just for the sake of the script. It completely throws me off from immersing myself in a show. Case in point – Hanjoo (the single mother) & her job. OMG it gives me actual stress by how wrong it is. PPL, or product placement, is a marketing & investment technique that is based off of an agreement between a brand & a production. The brand invests in a production in exchange for having their products advertised through it. This is very important because this is one of the ways that a production gets the money to start shooting in the first place. Also, investors are the boss, no matter where you go. They have to be pleased or else everyone is majorly screwed. Next, PPL is written into the script, before a shoot starts, after a discussion between the director & the scriptwriter, which is then sent to the producing company to look over & make sure that everything has been included. So just how exactly has the show gotten all of this wrong? First of all, Han Joo is the damn marketing team leader of her production company. Her job title is big, which means that she has way more important stuff to do than run around sets groveling before actors & the directors regarding PPL. It’s something that an intern or a rookie would be required to do, & even then, their job is not to convince anybody about including PPL. They are just there to watch & report back that the agreement is being upheld. And if there IS an issue, like a PPL scene getting preponed or an actor refusing to do a scene with it, it would be the director & his team apologizing to the person representing the production company, instead of the other way around. Because it is THEIR job to make sure that everything goes according to plan. A director cannot just throw tantrums on set about PPL because it’s all already been decided by him, himself, & neither can they get mad at anyone from the production company because they are higher than them in work hierarchy! An actor also cannot just refuse to do a PPL scene because that is how they are getting paid damn it! It’s not even about being unprofessional, it is just not done. They don’t have a choice in it. Plus anyone would be glad to get a PPL scene. If they do it properly then they can become the brand’s model & make shit loads of money through advertisements, as well as gain more exposure. IF, somehow, an actor were to refuse, it is the director’s job to convince the actor to do it. The chicken scene – its her duty to figure out a way to not let it affect her body, not the set’s. It’s her god damn job. She is in a drama. Did she think she would never have to eat or drink on it? The face mask scene – its the director & makeup artist’s job to find a workaround for it. Finally, a set is a highly micro-managed & highly stressful workplace. This means that there’s no way no one saw a bright pot of jelly on the ground before the shot was taken, & nobody has the free time to participate in an impromptu dance performance, happening ON the set, even during a break. Here’s what would have actually happened – someone would have screamed abuses at them & the crew would be rushing around shoveling food into their mouth because they hardly get 5 mins for that, forget having the luxury to lounge around. In short, literally everything that we have seen regarding Hanjoo and her work, is absolutely ridiculous & does. not. happen. EVER. Why give the character this job if they were not even going to portray it correctly, at all. It’s really just there as an excuse to show us how she gets mistreated in her day to day life, which could have been achieved even through other jobs. The only reason I see for making Hanjoo’s character work in the drama industry, instead of giving her a normal office job, is the novelty of it.

2) The actress’ boohoo backstory for refusing to take a bite of fried chicken, was very awkward exposition & unneeded. It achieved nothing. It would have been better to just leave her as a high-maintenance celebrity.

3) I did not like the way that Jinjoo forced the director to drink with her. Yes, it may look like he gave in easy, but he didn’t really. It is considered rude to refuse to drink with someone in Korea, on top of which he had already been following her around, doing all kinds of stuff, to convince her to work with him. Her saying that one line was enough pressure. As someone who refuses to drink myself, I am sensitive to this because people just do not know what “no” means irl, & was very irritated by this scene.

4) That “please don’t cry from now on, I want to see you smile” dialogue from Jaehoon to Hanjoo came out of nowhere. WTH. When did they get close enough for him to be throwing around lines like that? Are you kidding me? 🙄

5) I really do not get why Eunjung was considered to be at fault for Somin’s (the actress) extremely stupid behavior during their shoot. Somin was the one who kept cutting her off, trying to put her down, & then storming off, when all Eunjung was doing was follow the damn script. Apart from justifiably swearing once, when Eunjung was trying to put her down, she said nothing malicious to her at all. Also, Somin would have been severely reprimanded IRL for her extremely stupid behavior. Her co-host, her senior, would have chewed her head off. Her manager seemed like a nice level-headed person until this scene, when he confronted Eunjung, standing up for Somin, instead of scolding her.

All this together in just one ep made me throw my hands up in frustration. Does the scriptwriter know what they are doing at all? Because Ep 3 blasted their carelessness in my face. Ep 4 had less of all the things that irritated me in it’s previous ep, but I cannot remember what exactly happened in it & that is either really bad, or just ok, but it is definitely not the best case scenario. Ep 1 has definitely been the strongest ep so far, which is a sad sentence to write. Yet again, another drama has made me think “I spoke too soon”.

It is sad to see how emotionally distant Hanjoo & her son are, but I hope that the show doesn’t blame it on him growing up without a father, because that is not the case at all. Hanjoo is so swamped with her own worries that she can’t focus on her son & what he emotionally needs from her. It’s the reason behind him acting up & bringing the topic of his father – he is really just asking for her attention, for her love. However, my trust in the writers of this show has been shaken so…idk.

I was also uncomfortable with the way that when Hanjoo’s son got hit by a girl, & then Gong Myung’s character also got hit by a girl, Hanjoo’s dialogues – “you just stood there doing nothing?” & “why are all the men in my life bad at fighting?” insinuated that they should have retaliated & hit the girl back? Um, no. Please don’t teach your son that, at least. She should have gotten a proper apology from the girl & then complimented him on NOT fighting back, because it is never right to hit a girl. What are the writers doing…

I love your input! I know nothing about dramas production and I’m thankful for it, I though it impossible that they would treat people who give them money that way but maybe that’s how it look in Korea – that was my thought.
On the rest of your points, I fully agree, that was bothering me too.

Hmm, I don’t know but I think the show in a meta way would know how the industry works…. hahaha!
But I agree with you on PPL, even to a non-industry person this part was totally weird. Why would an actor refuse PPL? They will be paid well for the CF as well, and its a big issue of brand power, if you get it, you take it!

That fighting back was horrible indeed, it was just plain bad… I was appalled by it… both the scenes, the son and Gong Myung, on the other hand Gong Myung can’t act, the director had to cut his close up expression because they were really bad, even I could feel it.

But I think I know what the writers wanted to say or highlight in every scene and they tunnel visioned, which should have been caught by others but I don’t know what happened

    1. PPL, I think they know how it works, they have to, else they wouldn’t be able to even produce this show, so I think they wanted to really show is how street smart our team leader is to come up with such solutions like drying the face mask with dryer and how innovative our guy is and can even fry chicken, that was a meta PPL, no? and solve math questions, and fan girl to almost stalking the star for the PPL. Then they wanted to make a transition scene to show that they really had stalked and so they put that weird conversation there and it fell flat. It was honestly a disaster.
The director screaming at Jelly part: he really disagreed to it and so I get why he was screaming and they plotted it secretly behind his back.
But they also wanted to highlight that the lead girl 3) with a son works only on extreme short term plans and disaster mode on. So, she doesn’t solve the problem herself but relies a lot on instructions, even though she is team leader.
Her boss asked her that, when will she learn her job, she is still like an intern.

    3) She is exactly like that that’s her character, its all about her. That part is well written, although you are free to dislike her character.

    5) Even I did not know a lot of things, what she talked about. But here both of them were at fault and manager told her that exactly. She did not have a high hand, she could also tell her, what she meant. But she also did the same behavior. That is why she said in the end that she is just embarrassed.

I think mom and her son are well close, you don’t even know what all I have said to my mom as a kid, hahaha, kids are like that, they say what they feel and then forget … but its a guilt trip for mothers, I hope the mom stays strong.

Not fighting back, the show wanted to make a point of that with her ex husband but it really back fired… well, next time they should pay attention and not tunnel vision, I guess.

    Sorry for the long reply.

This!!! I was so weirded out at the whole PPL scene in the first episode. That’s not how it works and yes I also thought that ir may work that way in kent industry but definitely the brand has a higher stake plus anaother show about the kent industry (king of dramas) showed what you wrote. Even more surprising was the director getting angry or unwilling to insert the PPL when technically he should have no choice, also the actor doesn’t have one. Since I like the rest of the show and mainly relate to JJ being in the writing profession, so I’ll continue watching it but I have yet to see ep 3 so idk if that will deter me from continuing.

    1) I agree with what you said about Han Joo’s job. I grossed over the actress issue because it was supposed to show us her struggles and it was a way to bring her and the newbie together. Why did the writer give her this job when she could’ve done a lower job and give us the same scenes without the work nonsense? I’ll throw an idea: she will improve/show her worth in her job and be treated as she should be. If not, I don’t see why she needs that specific job, or will it be it a way to make her meet her ex by coincidence?

    2) I was confused with the backstory. She could have just been an idol/actress who was cold and didn’t open up to just anyone because of her personality.

    3) The scene didn’t seem particularly bothersome but your explanation made me think twice. She should know no means no but the director did the same thing to her – to a certain extent – with her script. At least, that’s how I interpreted this scene.

    4) This relationship smells bad. There’s a lot of things going on both sides and the guys seems like he wants to find affection. The quickest way, and there happens Han Joo to be in front of him. Things are rushing and Han Joo will be burnt.

    5) The actress is a fixed MC and probably more known to the general public than Eun Jung who was a special guest. So, the former’s reputation matters a lot and the director might not want to deal with a scandal and go through changes or even cancel his show. That wasn’t fair for Eun Jung, sure, but other people would’ve gone through trouble. The manager is really nice, too nice. I commented on a post that I liked their relationship but I should be more precise. I like his behaviour towards her but she needs to learn to be considerate of others. Maybe as she and Eun Jung interact? The actress looks lonely so it might explain the manager’s words to Eun Jung in the parking lot.

We haven’t seen Han Joo and her son spend lots of time together. It might be because Han Joo wants to be the mom and the dad at the same time but can’t fulfill one parent’s duty in the eyes of her son. If she told him the truth about his dad, even if it hurts, there wouldn’t been such lack of communication. We’re only in the beginning, so I’m hoping they didn’t introduce the newbie to become his dad. Instead, the ex will meet his son, apologize and let the son decide if he wants him in his life.

I think she wanted her son and the newbie to defend themselves and their answers mirrored her ex’s. For someone who has been as passive as her, she wants them to react. As if it was to show her frustration with her ex. She gave the worst advice, that’s true, but I hope that was the writer’s initial intention.

I just realized I don’t know the names of the characters….haha. i agree with what you wrote. The PPL was awkward, idol abrupt confession was awkward. I didn’t like the drinking scene, again kdrama is glamorizing drinking, I didn’t like he considered to jump out of the window while eating tomatoes….the son-mum scenes were sad when the son said he has no father, the son fighting scene was not really pleasant to watch but mum’s response was somewhat understandable…she wants her son to defend himself, it doesn’t matter if the other kid is a girl or a boy.

As for actress and manager…in real life the actress will be criticized and disliked, she’s unprofessional. But in the drama she’s entertaining to watch. Hehe

I decided the PPL nonsense was there to add comedy bits because it makes no sense otherwise. Due to this, I’ve decided I must turn off my brain to enjoy the rest of the show. The most disturbing part to me was pressuring someone who has decided to give up drinking alcohol.

I’m not enjoying the time spent drinking in this drama, but they almost made up for it with the song she sings to annoy him. I hate to admit it, but she’s living my dream when she does that.
