Idk if it was a good thing I just watched Rookie’s latest eps now or not. I don’t have to wait as long but then I have no one to talk to. 🙁 Had to go through so many beanie pages.

so i have SO many feelings. Like, I totally understand where GHR is coming from. I do. Far be it from me to get in the way of her life goals. And i understand that marriage to a prince would be the death of her ambition. (I also totally get how unrealistic it is. Like, a commoner marrying a prince? Psh. please. I know.) THAT BEING SAID i came for a happy ending. I was so gutted to have it end that way. and the more i think of how unrealistic it is, and how often the show has reminded us that novels are vs real life…the sadder i am. My only hope now is in Ho-dam (whatever it is). Maybe it’s some kind of birth secret that will enable him or her to marry each other and have her remain as a historian. is that far-fetched and totally unreal? Oh yes. Completely. I know. But also, even though this show is doing a lot to compare real life and novels, history and stories, etc etc — its also doing a lot to defy that. It’s subtly creating its own story thats as unrealistic as a fairy tale, though its unrealistic in new ways. So I am hoping till the end. Fingers crossed, breath baited, etc. But i’m bracing myself too.

hehehe sorry thats probably way more than you wanted. but, like i said, i cant get enough of this show.

I totally feel you! I understand Haeryung but it hurts bad! Rim also needs to understand that he is his own person and that Haeryung should not be his everything. It seems like he’s too hung up on her rn that be’s not thinking. He says he can give everything up but you never know what you’ll feel when life drags you down.

Is Haeryung not of noble status though? She seems rich and she was able to take the government exam. I was never worried about status for them to get a happy ending but now I’m confused. Though really, I dont think Haeryung would marry him even if she finds out her true identity.

so i think she *is* of noble status actually, but i don’t think she knows it. at the beginning (when she reads those boring ‘novels’) to the aristocratic women, she gets in so much trouble and there is a line about her common upbringing. i don’t think her “brother” is nobly born. i think he made a deal with the devil (Councillor min) a long time ago, and that’s how he’s gained status and wealth. i could be wrong about that; it’s not too clear to me.

i’m actually anticipating a bigger birth secret than GHR’s…i’m waiting for Rim’s history to come out. I think he’s closer in line for the throne than we’ve been led to believe.

i don’t think GHR actually objects to marriage. I think she objects to all the restrictions it brings with it…so i’m interested to see if some of those restrictions get defied in creative ways as the story goes forward. (as you can see, i am clutching at every possible thread to get my happy ending ;).

random thought (not really related) – Rim gets a lot of flak for being useless etc etc, but the man is also a best-selling novelist. i think he could hold his own if he had to live outside of the palace.

@anothernicole That’s what’s confusing. Before, I thought she was called a commoner because she was hiding her identity. Why would a noblewoman read novels for other nobles? It was the perfect disguise. She has a Seol Geum serving her so I wouldn’t really say she’s a commoner.

That’s right. It wasn’t the marriage that’s the problem but what it entails.

@earthna ohhh ok what you say makes sense — that she was disguising her identity when she was reading. i hadn’t thought of it that way, but i think you might be right.

i had been assuming that (forgetting her actual birth history for a minute) she was in that weird gray category — like, landed gentry if this were regency england — where she isn’t actually nobly born, but she has money and status that affords her access to the nobles. but when things go wrong and they get unhappy with her, they freely remind her of her “actual” place, her low birth, her common blood. the only way they would know her birth is by knowing her brother, so i assume everyone knows he isn’t noble…but he’s clearly got access to the palace and some kind of social status, which i assume he “bought” by doing something horrible for Councillor Min in the past (maybe he was the one who destroyed Seorowan?)

We talked about it last week. Talk about a gut punch and then reality hitting us after that.

It was! I couldn’t believe how hard I cried! When the show started, I didn’t like the idea that there was a romance. Why can’t Haeryung be awesome on her own and the show focus on her path of being a historian? I guess a part of it was my doubt of Cha Eunwoo playing the male lead. But look at me now! I got so invested to this love story, I was so wrecked after watching the episode.
