Extraordinary You – Episode 4 (7/8)

Baek Kyung – Feeling betrayed!

ok, I just finished watching Epsiode 4 and I felt extremely betrayed. Betrayed by the writer, by Dan-Oh and Do-Hwa.
It all felt very sad. It was painful to see Baek-Kyung’s unresolved feelings – he is self-aware but doesn’t know it, his feelings went straight to ‘jealousy’ as he tries to hold on to what was his, that ‘jealousy’ creeped into the stage (by the writer) and he is just exploding everywhere.

This show was pointing out how we all look at things from the ‘central’ characters perspective. And in that lens, Dan-Oh is her center. She is seeing Baek Kyung as the guy who has been hurting her for years. And when Baek Kyung betrayed his awareness, she just did not catch it. Because, he was irrelevant to her.
He clearly acted out of character saying he is worried about her, and she even noticed that he spoke of an event that did not happen in stage because something changed. Why did she not catch this?

The next one who should have caught it was Do-Hwa. There was absolutely no reason why Do-Hwa did not catch it. He doesn’t have any prejudice against BK and he is his friend, by stage. His face showed that he had the doubts. He should have questioned him more. He should have.

It was really painful to watch Baek Kyung suddenly remembering everything and he doesn’t know how to react. His extreme jealousy was his instant reaction. Everything from stage to shadow is just pouring on his awareness and he is exploding.
[I will talk about that sequence in a separate post]
For now, I am really trying to understand what the ‘writer’ is trying to do with Baek Kyung. Because, this HURTS!!

I don’t know if hrs self aware yet, but he certainly seems to be getting there

He definitely is. Even the previous episode he was showing signs. This episode he definitely is there. The fact that he remembers what’s happening in the stage is what is getting to him, because it’s outside the script and he is going rogue.

Also I’m not THAT impressed with Do-hwa. He’s nice to everyone but doesn’t stand up for anyone either. Like Yuda, when Namjoo bullies her. He just stands to the side & let’s it happen. Very meh for me.

Even in the ‘real’ world he ended up the secondary character 🙂

Just like what Dan Oh told him he seemed pretty lax and accepting of his reality. After the first shock, life moved on for him. We’ll see if he has some character growth going on too, but at the moment he seems to be more interested in Dan Oh’s life and quest to freedom.

That’s what is interesting. Depending on what personality and context the writer has given these characters their awakening may or may not be significant.
For eg Dan-Oh has a reasonably good life with money and caring father and good friends. But has a terminal illness. So her biggest conflict after awakening is staying alive. So her focus is clear. And she is able to cast aside years of her hurt from BK due to her personality.
For DoHwa we know nothing of his life. It’s bland. He is just a simple sweet guy who is happy to be around. So his awakening was equally bland.
But Baek Hyung is a complex character – he has major abuse issues going on at home, he is a loner, he has temper issues and a lot of unresolved stuff. On top of it he has to like a girl for his fathers sake and has been building up for years. So when he awakens, there is whole lot of deal with.
The sooner he knows the rules of the world the better it’s for him. But I fear the writer is taking his jealousy and running with it. And i dont like it.

I was surprised by how violent he became in the Stage ever since Haru acted on his own. I’m not sure if it’s the webtoon writer finding his jealousy interesting and making use of it (which, ugh, no! Stop, please), or it’s the ugly side effect of too many characters awakening that the Squid Guy talked about. Either way, I’m dreading the moment when Kyung finally know the truth. If he realized he was behaving much like his hated father in front of the girl that he actually cared about… (and yes, I’m 98% sure that deep down he cares aboit Dan-oh)

I am not too sure he cares about Dan-oh. At least not until he realises she is not the manipulative spoiled rich girl he thinks she is. Maybe he does care for her in a unconscious way but whenever he suspects or knows she’s out of danger, he changes real quick to utter contempt.

I feel the same way! It shocked me that he became violent so quickly and it felt a bit out of character (at the time) for him…

Ikr? It really felt out of character for him to behave that way. He never really resorted to physical assault before. But at the same time, I wonder if this will be the thing that fully awaken him. After all, Do-hwa admitted that he felt strange when suddenly his life revolved around Ju-da. Maybe the trigger for these character awakening is whenever the webtoon writer make them do something out of character or give them an inconsistent turn of event.

Dohwa would probably be the first character to notice Baek Kyung gaining awareness and caring for Danoh but he might not be the one to tell him. Poor puppy has to discover he is aware all by himself.

I’m 99.9% sure Baek Kyung in the drama cares for Danoh, at least deep inside.

From Dan Oh’s perspective, even if she understands Baek Kyung, this was the same guy who hurts her stage self, the one she pines for hopelessly, so I guess there’s some bias there from her. She doesn’t see that he maybe close to being self aware even if she noted he’s been odd because she simply couldn’t care less…

I get her point. But I feel him being left alone is going to be a big mess.. he is not just going to be confused, he is going to act in ways that are not pleasant..

Yes hopefully he will not turn into a villain in this drama as a result of his self-awareness. And that his self aware will be like Dan Oh – to do all means to get his life back and correct it.

I have a strong feeling that’s where the writers are going with him. Come on, look at him. He is so good at playing the bad guy that it affects us viewers. It would be too tempting to use him as an antagonist!!

I think the writer will be the “bad guy” and maybe Mi-chae. I think Kyung will hit rock bottom next week and come back to the light the week after.
