I didn’t think it sucked at all, I thought it was great and done really well. I was so shocked! But in a good way. If I want to see serious BL I’ll watch Taiwan HISstory. Just started 3 today.
Kdramas handle their homophobia in a different way than cdramas. While cdramas just outright ban it, kdramas tend to pretend different sexual orientations don’t exist or make it into a joke. There are plenty of kdramas out there where 2 guys might kiss or ‘act’ gay but it’s almost always queerbaiting or done for comedic relief. I’m not sure which is worse tbh ☹️
Ordinarily I’d agree with you and this is the first time I really thought it was done in a way I liked. I don’t remember any other kdramas where 2 guys kissed – what are they?
I wouldn’t put this in the same category as what you’re talking about, but maybe that’s because I wanted to like it. I don’t want that feeling to be ruined.
I’ve not seen the scene as I’m not watching the drama. Only seen it in gif format. It’s definitely fun and cute in the gifs but I can’t comment outside of that. And you can enjoy it, nothing wrong with that! Even though I hate queerbaiting and making it into a joke, some can still be funny and enjoyable to watch.
I hate queerbaiting too. For some reason I didn’t think this fit that category.
I didn’t even like Coffee Prince.
GIFs are nice but take things out of context.
The other thing is this drama is turning tropes on their head, so I’m thinking this might go in a different direction (or not). I wouldn’t be surprised if the receiver of the kiss (2nd lead male) gets a crush on 1st male lead (geez I’m bad with actors and characters names).
I also thought maybe kdramas are loosening up on their conservative ways, but I’d forgotten about other dramas and queerbaiting. I’ve only seen it the opposite, where the female dresses up as a male.
For example, Strong Woman Do Bong-Soon had both queerbaiting (the ML and second ML were shown in a kinda compromising situation in trailers) and having an over-the-top-gay character there just as a joke. Queerbaiting is when the media uses the possibility of a same-sex romance to try and get viewers but then doesn’t actually have one.
Thanks – I misunderstood the definition. I know cross dressing is just cross-dressing, but what came to mind immediately (whether it had anything to do with anything or not!) was what I hated about Coffee Prince, where he thinks he must be gay but (whew) turns out he was okay because it was really a girl. I found that type of thing really annoying.
I was personally ok with Coffee Prince and actually enjoyed that drama (it’s been awhile since I’ve seen it though so I’m not sure how much I would like it now). He did struggle with the fact that he may be gay, but he did come to terms with the possibility that he was gay (iirc). But of course he was definitely happy to learn he WASN’T gay.

I’ve been wondering if kdramas would ever let 2 guys kiss – question answered. And I think I know where this is going. I laughed-out-loud.

It kind of sucks that it was for over the top comic relief though.
