JUNWOOK RESPONDED TO MY COMMENT ON INSTAGRAM!!!!! I COMMENTED ON HIS POST EARLIER AND SAID “CONGRATULATIONS. I’LL LISTEN TO THE SONG A LOT” AND HE RESPONDED WITH ‘THANK YOU’ 💛💘💖💛💘💛💕💘💝
I need to continue my Korean studies. I’ve been taking a break for way too long now 😬 Have you been studying? Would you be interested in doing our daily practices again? That really helped keep me motivated and accountable.
Yes, he’s such a sweetheart. He’s always responding to fan comments 💕💕💕
Keeping the motivation while learning a foreign language is so hard… I have resumed my Korean practice with probably an excessive goal: take the TOPIK test in April 2020 (level 3 or 4) + aim to be able to read and discuss a news article written in Korean by summer 2020 (for instance, the articles on BBC in Korean are fairly accessible). To do so, I strive (and fail sometimes) to study an hour a day with the TTMIK “News in Korean” (Day 1 I read the text and list and learn the vocabulary, Day 2 I translate the text into French and then back into Korean to make sure I memorized the vocabulary and the sentence structures) and I complement with “Korean Grammar in use, intermediate level” to solidify grammar points. I understand that your language goals are more focused on communication and pop culture, therefore you might not be interested in my “news” Korean language regimen… Also, I am not sure how we could exercise efficiently together. Do you have any suggestion?
Wow! Your study regimen is impressive. That’s true. Our goals are very different so studying together might not be the best option at this point. ํ์ดํ !
I am so sorry I cannot support your language learning more considering how helpful it as been to study with you with the TTMIK material – I cannot thank you enough for that. You already have a solid knowledge of the Korean language and there is a lot you can do with it (do you still translate on wiki? it must be such a formative activity!), so I hope you find either a goal or a channel which gives you the additional push to reach the next level. ํ์ดํ RaOnAh sshi!! Don’t give up on the Korean language, it obviously hasn’t given up on you!
Fellow Korean learning beanie. I love that you have goals and you have something that interests you for you want to express yourself in Korean. That motivation is super important I’ve found.
You seem to be wayyyyy more advanced that I am. I just looked at the TOPIK test levels. Beginners are expected to know between 800-2000 words! I barely know 600–I constantly forget old words. Nevertheless, I’m going to try to learn 1000 words by the end of this year and a total of ~2500 by the end of next year. That will only just get me past beginner level though. And it all depends on the type of words I learn too.
I’ve found that text book vocabulary is not very helpful to me at this point. What’s the point in learning how to say department store when they’re going the way of the dinosaur? So yeah, I can see how our interests dictate how we approach learning the language.
Is there even a set list of vocabulary words you need to know for the TOPIK at the beginner level? Have you taken Level 1 and 2 already?
Fellow courageous Korean learning beanie, I applaud your commitment! Motivation is indeed super important when learning a foreign language, and one should focus first on topics that matter to him or her before extending beyond! Although, sadly, you do need to acquire some basic vocabulary if you want to access most learning materials.
I took the TOPIK test, level 2, ages ago (and I got 97 at vocabulary, I was so proud!!) so I concur: a list of vocabulary is useless (sorry!!!) because learning words without context doesn’t stick in your brains. I took the TOPIK test less than a year into learning Korean and I adopted the following strategy: a good textbook for beginners (I had found one that I really liked, with real dialogues, grammar points and vocab) and, at the end, working on the TOPIK test itself (with this text book: http://www.darakwon.co.kr/koreanbooks/book_view.asp?lg=en&bookid=54 – I really like books from Darakwon usually). Translating little dialogues and texts back and forth is the best way I found to consolidate vocabulary.
So it all depends of your goal when learning Korean: if you want to take the TOPIK test for beginngers, textbooks are a good way to go!
NB: this TOPIK textbook from Darakwon is no longer usable since the TOPIK test has changed since. People interested in taking the TOPIK test should look up textbooks addressing the New TOPIK (post 2015).
Best of luck for your learning! ๐
Nooo…I bookmarked it and told myself that I now know where to find some useful resources to study for the TOPIK. Thanks for the heads up though and the well wishes!
Thanks for the strategy for learning vocabulary! I actually thought about doing that very thing but never actually implemented it. Will start that this week.
For the time being, I’ve been practicing making sentences and talking about things I like on DB. @raonah sunsengnim has been helping me. Would you care to be tagged on some of these conversations? What topics do you like to talk about? Do you like K-Pop?
Fear not, as Darakwon has published a textbook for the new TOPIK test: http://www.darakwon.co.kr/koreanbooks/book_view.asp?lg=en&bookid=116 . I intend to buy the intermediate – advanced version as a nerdy Christmas present to myself! ๐
I’d love to be tagged in your sentence practicing, although I must inform you that I might not always be able to react or response. K-pop is not my area of expertise, but my now-10-year presence on this website suggests a severe Kdrama addiction! ๐
