ARSENAL MILITARY ACADEMY Ep. 4.
It’s been a while since I’ve been hooked by a C-drama. It feels like a MULAN story in a TIN TIN adventure comic. Please stay good!

    ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

    It’s amazing!

Your guys’ post about this drama on fanwall yesterday made me rewatch some of the scenes again. 😢 I miss them. I still cracked up like I haven’t seen the scenes before.😂

The first arc is about getting to know the characters and seeing their daily lives at the academy.

If you have the mindset that this drama is about wartime, patriotism, and characters, I think you will thoroughly enjoy it! 😬

Plus women here are amazing! Written with respect for their characters. 👍🏼

Yep, that is my mindset. I am all for wartime and bromance. I don’t even need focus on romance (a tiny bit is all I need). MULAN happens to be one of my favorite stories, and it reminds me of classic war films I used to watch a lot, like SERGEANT YORK.

It look me a bit to accept that it’s set in 1911, because it looks so very different to what Korea looked like then! The sets look very modern, like a European city. I have no idea what 20th century China looked like, so I may be wrong, but it feels more like a Ghibli movie or Tin Tin comic.

This show is set in 1914, and in terms of historical accuracy they get almost everything wrong, or didn’t even bother to check 🙂

Ahh really? Interesting, which part? I’m curious. If it’s too spoilery to post here, maybe if you could leave a comment on my wall. Please thanks!

Costumes are hot mess mix of differents decades and all of them are of western origins (I hated Xu Kai’s velvet suit paired with embroidered cowboy shoes with burning passion), if you look up photos from that era most people outside of big cities wear mostly Chinese clothes, modernized qipao started at around that times, not that people didn’t wear Western fashion of course. And the way society is presented, there is no way in hell that upper class unmarried young woman would be allowed to work (at night! while attending school) and at a seedy bar to that, not to mention Manting career as cabaret singer and actress. And Xie Xiang parents would let her go alone to school hours away from them without checking and paying tuition for school first. But of course it probably wouldn’t be so entertaining or maybe it would, who knows.

I thought so, thanks @shach. The leather trousers, cowboy boots and sunglasses looked out of place for 1914. On the other hand, I do like the Art Deco decorations and the ladies’ long flowing dresses.

That’s why I said it reminds me of Ghibli movies or The Adventures of Tin Tin, broadly set in a pre-WWI China that looks a lot like Europe. I don’t care though, the drama has enough to keep me entertained. 😀

I like their lunch “boxes”/canteens, however they call it. I like how the cover can be used as a plate!

Thanks shach. As history is my weakest point and I stay away from period dramas, these details and logic are overlooked by me. But yes I do agree that his cowboy boots were out of place and women in this drama are seen as more carefree (have more freedom to rule and to do what they want) than what they would have been back in those days.

True. I’m surprised as well that China at that time had adapted to the western (European) culture after the fall of Qing Dynasty. I read on google that European influence was indeed strong in that period…

I agree about the wonderful women… although I found Manting to be a bit too obsessed later on in the series.

Also, while trying to be as vague as possible (to avoid spoiler), I had wished the Show introduced the florist earlier in the series. I wanted to know and see more about her.

I agree with you. But then I thought about it, her persistence mirrored Yanzhen a lot just like her other traits. The more she’s been told no, the more she got aggressive to get what she wanted. Only difference is Yanzhen got lucky with his persistence.

        And yes on the florist!

Tell me about it! Gu Yuzhen is handsome and makes me laugh, but every time the perfect Shen Junshan does something perfect I feel I’m doomed to have Second Lead Syndrome.

Now that I think about it, did Gu Yanzhen wink at any of those guys, or just to Xie Liangchen ?

I’ve only seen him wink at Liangchen haha, but I’m on episode 10 (whoops, I just binged 6 episodes in one afternoon).

Omg hahahaha you’re amazing Wishfultoki for binging 6 episodes at one go lol. It took me a while.

But yes, I too believe he started this wink craze because of her. I’m sure he’s doing this to be cute to her. 🙈

thank you for the link 🙂
however DB is the only social media I have and I can’t follow all (been so long I haven’t read open thread or a recap )^^’
I don’t know if adding another one will be possible (or it’ll mean to reduce drama watching time and we all know how precious it is =P)

Ive only just started this drama so I’m late to this but “Mulan in a Tintin comic” is so accurate hahaha thank you. I thought of Mulan immediately in the first episode.
However Tintin is set more in the 30s, between the WWs, not pre WWI, but this show isnt, as mentioned, historically accurate which is probably why it feels more like Tintin!

Ooh yes, the Queen herself is watching this! Fortunately the show stays consistent as a “Mulan in a Tintin comic” until the end (😅) – just give the characters time to develop. I didn’t have much luck with Cdramas this year but I really enjoyed this one. Hope you like it too! 😊

Jenmole told me to watch it lmao. Because she’s not pfft and thought I might like it, and she knows my tastes the best so she wants to see if she was right ahahaha
OOhh that is a good sign. Yeah it has been fairly slow so far, I’m only on episode 8 atm. Will keep you posted!
