Untangling Myself From The Untamed

After I completed my second watch, I was determined not to start my 3rd. So, I picked up another C drama. Real life got busy because there were things which I had cast aside when I was feverish in The Untamed haze. The backlog was huge.

While I am successful from not watching any more Untamed, I have been less successful in things or people related to The Untamed. Daily, I check a few tumblrs I had bookmarked for Wangxian or Untamed posts. I stalk #wangyibo hashstag every day, sometimes every hour. I am building a growing collection of pictures, gifs and videos.

I even subtitle clips! (turn on the volume)

Our adorable Han Guangjun.

How have you all been faring? I know some of us have moved on long ago, some are newly hooked.

Aside from fangirling, I am afraid the biggest impact is that now I am incredibly selective when it comes to picking up new dramas. I am not expecting anything to come close to The Untamed, it’s just that many dramas appear more meh than they might actually be. Hopefully, one crack drama appears soon.

There have been a few dramas I’ve really liked since The Untamed. But I’ve really not been into watching any dramas lately so just been watching some here and there.

I’m on my 3rd rewatch 😅 but now that I’m watching it after having read the novel I’m actually surprisingly noticing more stuff.

        surprisingly noticing more stuff.

Is that even possible??? I know you are a more detailed viewer than me. Okay, I have to stop giving myself reasons for a 3rd watch!

Yup! Remember how we discussed Lan Zhan’s father and not being sure if he was ever mentioned in the drama outside of his story related to LZ’s mom? Well in ep. 4 or 5 he is mentioned to be dead. I hadn’t caught that in my previous 2 watches 😅 there are also some other small details I’m noticing.

          2
          2

            I didn’t catch that either!

            lol.. i did!

wow.. you guys are lucky.. maybe having read the novel made me notice all nuances in 1st go itself.. so nothing left for second watch (no wonder couldn’t sit through the second watch)

On my….I’ve lost counts of the re-watches. Whatever, I’m on ep 40-ish on Netflix, you know, where they go to Carp Tower after Yi City – a month later. So what were they doing behind closed doors during that month, eh??
I have NOT moved on. I’ve tried, Lord knows I’ve tried.
Tried: Addicted, Blood, Bloody Romance, My Country, etc. Okay, but don’t then go back to Untamed or you’ll realize how much better it is.
Anyone tried to re-watch Guardian lately? Doesn’t hold a candle to Untamed.
And noticing stuff still? Oh, yeah. Unless Netflix’ subtitles are just making up stuff.
This is the first drama I’ve even re-watched the minor character’s side stories, because they are SO GOOD.

I only watched up to ep. 20 of Guardian and had to drop it. I didn’t like it and thought it was pretty poorly done.

          2
          4

Strange, I always thought it was good. Not that I have watched it but there were people who raved about it and the OTP’s chemistry. The only thing was that the ending was badly done.

I remember ff thru much of it and liking it a bit, but try watching it after Untamed. It’s just not even doable.

            0

@outofthisworld the chemistry between the leads was the only saving grace of the drama. I wouldn’t have lasted as long as I did otherwise. But the drama was very clearly lower budget, story just felt like monster of the week and poorly written + confusing, outside of the otp the actors were pretty bad, one of the early villains was one of the most cliche you could get and the thing that forced me not to go on is it had one of the worst side characters I’ve seen in any drama. He straight up made me rage by how uttey useless and stupid his character was. I know some people like it but I think it got a bit of a pass because of thirsty girls wanting anything bl.

@trinpie Re Guardian, I didn’t even like the two leads together – they seemed to be a mis-match – though I really like each actor individually I just couldn’t see the “chemistry”. It was forced. I felt like nothing in Untamed was forced, it flows naturally and organically (except for the actress who played the Wen Qing, she tended to pull me out of the story).

What’s Addicted and Blood? Korean dramas? I think my kdrama slump has reached another level. Maybe I need to watch a succession of horrible horrible C dramas then go back to kdramas.

          1
          4

Addicted is the BL gay c-drama that the censors, once they realized what it was, took it off the air before it was over. Ep 15 was the last episode out of ? and I really would have liked to know whether or not Johnny Huang was becoming a dangerous kid who was “addicted” to Timmy Xu. He had violent tendencies.
Blood is an older k-drama about a vampire. The idea was good, but the execution is terrible. Bad acting, bad camera work, bad cgi, but that’s just the 1st episode so I’m watching the 2nd when they change actors to the adult version of the vampire to see if it’s any better. He’s an actor that fell in love with the lead female and they got married in real life. He’s going to be in a new k-drama coming up so I thought I’d check out his other work.
I usually can stand up to 20 minutes of another drama before going back to Untamed. But to build the anticipation, I’m not going to watch Empathy arc for Nie til tomorrow. I don’t think I’ve watched that part more than once and don’t really remember it.

            0

Hahaha….are the censors sleeping? Or enjoying their job too much?

Yeah, I thought Blood was the kdrama where the now infamous not couple got hitched. Just curious why you chose the drama.

            1
            0

@outofthisworld Why I chose Blood? I put all the actor’s dramas on my “to try” list and then I watch a bit to see if anything sticks. That’s what I did with Untamed and Longest Day in Chang’an, watched a bit of each to see which one stuck. And you know the rest of the story.

@outofthisworld Dropped Blood already – didn’t last long, did it! Dropped his other dramas too. Now back to re-watching whatever, besides Untamed. Although I do love Tale of Nokdu.

In the process of untangling myself from The Untamed, I started Ashes of Love and found myself enjoying the cute yet angsty story. But on the other hand, I just became a member of Discord group that covered everything MXTX related (i.e. the writer of the Untamed novel). So… I’m not sure I’m actually willing to let myself out from this rabbit hole.

I think I should start a Untamed Unaddicted group, like you know – AA?

We can all gather together and talk about how to NOT talk about the drama, the novel and related. Do you think it’d work?

I was just wondering what can such a group talk about.

Me: Welcome to UU! Let’s talk about everything and anything as long as it’s not Untamed related!
            UU: Hi everyone
Me: For example, we shouldn’t talk about Wangxian…
UU: Oh, like we shouldn’t post beautiful fanart like this? *post one*
UU: Wow! That’s gorgeous! Yes, this isn’t allowed.
UU: I saw this video pop up on my feed. “shows clip” I should delete it, shouldn’t I?
Me and everyone else – watches video even if we have seen it.

Since I started watching The Untamed later than many others, I’m still happily in the re-watch (sort of the 3rd one now), re-visiting all those parts that I didn’t understand, and noticing things others mentioned which I missed.

I do admit that other shows, which I can objectively say are good, I do not feel as much emotional engagement with, just because the feels for The Untamed and it’s actors is still so strong, and there’s little energy for or interest left over to pay to other shows.

I still laugh and cry with other shows and I do still intersperse other entertainment in my viewing time, but the majority of interest still lies with things, The Untamed.

You are so right! I will still say Nirvana In Fire is overall a better show than the Untamed but I didn’t feel as much emotional engagement to it as I did to the Untamed. Even some of my all time favorite kdramas, none came close to this show.

I have been very good at not following actors or shipping drama couples. I wouldn’t say I ship Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo but their BTS interactions, fanmeet and concert appearances are all so entertaining. I love them together and separately.

Other than Untamed related things, the only drama I’m watching is Longest Day In Changan. This one won’t fail me quality wise, it’s just that I am not hooked to it. I can watch one episode per day.

I could not ever get into NIF for the exact reason you mentioned – no emotional engagement to any of the leads. Therefore I didn’t care for the story, the acting, the revenge, the political machinations, nada.
However, it will still be known as the penultimate drama. Untamed is too personal, to emotionally engaging but not enough grand splendor.

          2
          3

For NIF S1, I only cared for Wang Kia’s character or maybe sort of something of the ML. Strangely, I am immune to Hu Ge so he does nothing for me although everyone in the cast were good to great actors. The villains in the show outdid the heroes in terms of complexity, depth and acting. NIF S2 was a lot less great in terms of writing and plot but I did feel more attached to the characters, even for Huang Xiaoming who I usually don’t care much for.

Untamed isn’t one of those dramas which are epic and grand. I know the visuals are great but there are some C dramas which are crazily splendid in this aspect.

@outofthisworld BTW, you mis-typed Wang Kai’s name. I know because my daughter’s nickname is Kai (which I’m told to change it because it’s a guy’s name, ha!). I don’t care of Wang Kai or Hu Ge . But I wholeheartedly agree with NIF2, I was really attached to the characters, esp Liu Hao Ran and the lady who played Lin Xi, well, just about everyone.
I loved NIF2. It’s on my list to watch again, and I’ve watched it I think 3 or 4 times since it’s aired.
I much prefer intimate personal emotional attachments to characters and their relationships rather than having grand vistas, beautiful cinematography, etc. Don’t spend the whole budget on visuals.

LOL! Yup, it’s a typo. There’s no such word ‘kia’ in Chinese.

It’s possible for Kai to be a girl’s name – it depends on which character you use. If it’s this 凯, then I think it might work if it’s a middle character rather than the last for example ‘surname/family name’ 凯玲 but if it’s just ‘surname/family name’ 凯, it’s definitely more male.

I’m about 2/3 through my second watch and second reading of the book. However this morning i found some more of those “crack” videos of these two – along with crack videos from the Guardians (another ‘bromance’ drama) and now I’ve spent all day watching between getting things done.
But I can’t help but compare it to Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan. sigh…..
Yes, at some point we need to move past this obsession and get on with life right?
But I still love watching all the interaction between these two actors on and off stage.
What is this about? Why is it so affecting? Is it the pure love and friendship between these two that we are all watching and wishing we had in our lives?
      maybe…
but I’ve been enjoying obsessing about this show with all of you @outofthisworld, @trinpie all the others…
I’m always happy to read and respond to your posts!

Yes, at some point we need to move past this obsession and get on with life right?

Definitely! It’s just harder than I thought and I’m shocked at myself.

I do not know why this show has such an effect on me. I am not a viewer who gets easily emotionally attached to a show.

I have not analysed if it’s pure love or friendship. I am a terribly hard to please viewer when it comes to romance. I hate all the drama tropes that force viewers to feel something. So many ‘romantic’ moments fall flat. Here comes a drama where love is communicated purely through the eyes, touch, body language, confessions(not “I love you” but even more effective!) and action. No kissing, no hugging. Yet, it’s the most successful in bringing across the romantic or if you wish to see it in another way – special relationship between the two.

Thank you for reading @stpauligurl! I always enjoy reading yours too.

ha ha.. i started untamed yesterday for second watch.. lol.. i couldn’t bear it after ep 2

BUT that is primarily because fans’ undying effort to promote BJYX drama is super high quality and fun.. and i get new things every 3 days 😛

it is wearing off now though as new content reduces!

But surprisingly, i can’t find myself going back to any of MXTX’s other works either..
it has been very long since i last read scum villain, might re read that

      who is watching tharntype series?
it is all smut. leads have excellent physical chemistry 😛

But i have to say, it is done fairly decently.. it doesn’t look vulgur.. nor does it look the usual cheesy thai stuff (i’m sure stuff will come.. but until ep 6. its good)

PS: story is just a loose plot.. so ignore.. but surprisingly even with lack of story, leads chemistry sells off the whole thing

Me! I did like first ep but then it went crazy. Like so many other dramas, things between the leads develop too fast and romance doesn’t feel real. It’s like a race to fanservice. I was never a fan of SOTUS but I’m always surprised other thai BLs don’t learn from it.

Many people loved it, later it even got a sequel, I find the plot silly and the secondary characters boring but they did take the time to let the romance or at least the tension between the MLs grow, that’s not to say it was ever developed but it was slow which was probably the reason it became a hit among this genre.

I’m on my 2nd rewatch, at ep 45… not only I’m not skipping any scenes (of 3rd or 4th characters), but also I’m doing a lot of rewinding and rewatching along with reading some chapters of the novel to understand some
WWX’s PoV better… even when reading a chapter I cannot just brows, I want to read it over and over… Before starting The Untamed, I was in the middle of two other dramas: Camilla (pretty good one actually) and Vagabond (carazy stupid makjang, but addictive)… anyway I couldn’t get back to watching any of those yet!!
