The Untamed – Wei Wu Xian was the constantly falsely accused, Untamed Innocent. But keeping his promise to protect the weak and to have a clear conscience gave him no other choice.

I hate to admit it, but some of the best lines were given to our resident villain in hiding, Jin Guangyao. I find him to be an interesting villain in that he had not originally set out to be or to do evil. He had done his best to win approval and acknowledgement from the various people he served. He was hard working, treated his underlings well enough (so much so that Su She was loyal til the end), he was even a good friend to Lan Xichen and a good uncle to Jin Ling. His decisions to be evil, he claims, were because he had run out of choices. That was partly true, but also he was opportunistic enough to kill off a whole family after pinning the death of his son to them, and he engineered blame to fall on WWX for his murder of his half-cousin and half brother so that he could take over the Jin Clan.

Perhaps if his horrible father had at least freed his mother, the plot against the Jin family might have not reached fruition, but we’ll never know.

Despite his villainy, I do agree with what he said. Even if it had not been him who had thrown WWX under the bus, someone would have done it, because WWX was ‘untamed’ and powerful and a threat, and people needed someone to blame. Even Wei Ying himself had told Lan Zhan the same thing. He had said he no longer cared who was behind the evils that he ended up being blamed for, knowing that sooner or later, as Yiling Patriarch, whatever he said in his own defence would not be believed. The world needed an easy target to accuse and in the face of whom, they could unite, and feel virtuous. Even without Jin Guangyao or the extra flute, he might also have ended up the Innocent Accused.

I also agree with JGY that Jiang Cheng had a responsibility to bear over the terrible unfairness and attack against WWX. If only JC had been able to get past his insecurities and need to be supported as leader, if he had been able to keep the powerful WWX by his side, for mutual support and protection, JC and his Clan would have been a force to be reckoned with, and WWX would not have faced quite as devastating an experience as he did.

Hence, the scenes captured in the previous post (although it preceded this scene with JGY), where JiangCheng apologised to WWX, felt so right and so satisfying.

I believe there was a moral lesson in there…

@linda-palapala I felt that one lesson was to take care to be considerate of others.

One of the things that struck me was that WWX had laughed in incredulity that Jin Guangyao had committed such heinous crimes because he had been constantly disrespected and looked down upon. WWX probably felt that it was an inconsequential reason.

However, I’m guessing, that it was the fact that Jin Guangyao had been worn down by the abuse of his father and of others all his life, just because of the circumstances of his birth, and that nothing he did could make a difference about, that it became possible for any little ill-treatment to ‘break the camel’s back’, so to speak. If he was going to be badly treated (hanged for a lamb) even when he did good things and did his best, he might as well go all out evil (and be hanged for a sheep) and get something out of it.

I thought it was the old controversy of “nature vs nurture” as well. Did he have a tendency to evil (jealousy, revenge, etc) or did he not have the nurture – or most likely a combination of both.
However, even as he told WWX he’d be vilified regardless, JG was also vilified by the majority gossip mongers by virtue of being a bastard from a prostitute. Like when he overheard Nie’s men talking about him, etc.

Yes, … hence I felt there was a parallel between WWX and JGY in some way. The decision to keep his conscience clear, (assuming a good conscience) saved WWX from acting on resentment and becoming evil. In JGY’s case, I’m not sure if he had a good conscience to begin with, but he did not overtly choose evil until later. I suppose assuming he had a good conscience, then JGY chose the opposite ie to not keep it clear.
