As much as I like When The Camellia Blooms, I would prefer to watch a drama of a single mom and her son, struggling to get approval from the society and her boyfriend’s family.
I left the show because of this but maybe they needed a hook factor. Something people would want to come back to ever week to know how what happens next, you know when people need an extra plot. I won’t ne surprised if the writer originally planned to only go with the story you said but the director or production told her to add it because that wasn’t enough to fill 16 episodes.

Adding the serial killer is a bit tooooo much imo.
