    What a great find, thank you @pakalanapikake! It looks like Yeongjo was a big fan of reviving ancient rites (pp.12-13). I had no idea there was a Royal Archery Rite. Maybe he just wanted to show off as well as strengthen military power?

      You’re most welcome, @wishfultoki. I don’t recall how I stumble across some of these discoveries. 😉

      I didn’t read the entire document this time. I usually do, which is a drag when a monograph runs to 120 pages. O.o

      I’m not surprised that there was a Royal Archery Rite because archery was such an integral martial art in Korea. I think I read that it was included in the state military exams until the armed forces were reformed (or the gwageo was abolished?) in 1894 or so — well after modern firearms and machine guns came into use.
