This is awesome if only for the fact that we have something popular in Korean entertainment to talk to laymen about other than BTS/BP/PSY. I’m sure this movie is still no where as populars as the aforementioned, but still.
I almost use the same line to tell people how good East Asian dramas are and now films too…but well a few people just can’t think of trying subtitles at all. I also had that issue once but thankfully I gave in otherwise I would’ve never known a format that I like way better than US shows.
EXACTLY!!! why do people shy away from anything subtitled??? they’ve missed so many, many great movies in the past years… like Cinema Paradiso, Life is Beautiful, Amelie, Das Boot, The Vanishing (Danish, not the american sucky remake), Hang the Red Lantern, etc., etc., etc….
and i’m stupid. Raise the Red Lantern… my brainthing, it’s been too long… i know many more, but this old brain can’t resurface the titles…
i don’t understand the FEAR of having to read subtitles! ‘course, some of my friends have said they don’t like having to constantly watch the screen… ummm, what do they do in the theaters? they must fall asleep, or they simply don’t go… sadly.
Thanks for mentioning all of these, I’ll give them a try. One of my favorite movies is Children of Heaven and that is Iranian (subs needed). There is just so much good content out in the world that isn’t praised as highly because it is never that commercialized and has limited approach because of subtitles.
The Return – russian movie is very good, sad but very true.
Theo Angelopoulos is a wonderful director. His movies are so touching.
If you like Crush Landing On You so there is this little gem from Zdenek Sverak “Kolya” which won Oscar long time ago and is dealing with a super cute russian kid who would change the life of one ageing forgotten musician. Or there’s “Good bye, Lenin!” german movie.
The Eight Day.
Carlos Saura is Argentinian director and his Tango is 👏.
There’re so many!
But if you would like to check some great directors making movies in english there’s still Wim Wenders and his Wings of Desire. Or Ken Loach and his The Wind That Shakes The Barley or his other work.
