Crash Landing on You | Ep. 9 : Of all the mothers, I’m most curious about Han Jung Yun’s journey. She’s haunted by her past cruelty to Se Ri; will she finally embrace this unwanted daughter when Se Ri returns from the dead?

I wobbled a bit when I saw how that surreptitiously shot photo of Mom was the only “family” photo Se Ri had in the apartment.

    i don’t understand this plotline..
If seri is illegitamate child of her dad, she doesn’t seem to show affection towards dad (when we know that dad thinks very highly of her and always has)

Mom i can understand, for all theoretical arguments that may exist out there, it is near impossible to actually be affectionate towards an illegitimate child .. one will always have strong negative feelings .. so what mom did, i can rationalize

But, what totally baffles me is why Seri is hell bent on “winning” mom’s approval.. is it guilt conscious because her existence is living proof of how mom’s life was devastated.. and if that is the case then it is not pure love or respect from seri’s side towards Mom.. it is just pure guilt

I hope we’ll see more back story related to Se Ri’s childhood and how she broke away from the family. Will the story explore the state of her parents’ marriage?

I think what Se Ri wants from Mom is love and acceptance, not approval. Children want the love of their parents, even when families are f*cked up.

Look at the heartbreak work of Harry Harlow and the wire mothers. Debora Blum’s book Love at Goon Park brilliantly explores how Harlow’s work revolutionized our understanding of child development and legitimized the need for attachment between children and parents.

A recent documentary my PBS colleagues did on our state’s foster care system observed a similar phenomenon. Kids in the system would rather be raised by their own families.

It’s possible for some to genuinely recover from an affair—even one that produced a child—but I suspect Se Ri’s dad did little to repair his marriage. The mom seems not to have demanded a reset of their marriage and can only regard Se Ri as a reminder of her husband’s betrayal. What an awful burden for both mother and child.
