Sunday morning

I am the luckiest gal in the entire world. The luckiest! I wake up on Sunday mornings with a kiss. I tiny kiss from my gorgeous boy who says, ‘love you, mummy’. Every time it happens my heart breaks a little with joy. Just a year ago he would use sign language to say he loved me.

As my gorgeous boy hurries away, eager to begin his day, I take some time to toss and turn in bed. Its Sunday! Mummy needs a day off, too right? As I drift off to sleep, I feel a little weight over me. Without looking I know exactly which cat has just jumped into bed. ‘Good morning Pus’ I say to my 9-year-old kitty, she responds with a tiny cackle as if to say it’s time to wake up now mum.

By this time, I reach out for my phone to read the morning news (I have always done that since I could remember waking up) and as doom and gloom takes over while reading the news, I feel another energetic weight on my blanket covered legs. I hear a little squabble at the foot of the bed, a tiny hiss here and there, as my 12-kilo second cat confidently walks over me to lick my face. ‘Good morning Nismo’ I say, ‘are you ready for breakfast?’. Feeling like his mission was accomplished of waking me up, he purrs, head bumps and saunters away. But of course, not before squatting the other cat snoozing on my legs.

I grit my teeth a bit. ‘Can I ever sleep in?’ I think, as I hear heavy footsteps coming up the stairs followed by a little one. I hear ‘Good morning’ as he walks in. Holding a coffee cup. ‘I have coffee for you’ he declares as he sits beside me. This time I sit up, making the cat jump out of bed. ‘What is the plan this morning?’ he asks. I say it is the usual. He gives me a tiny kiss and says ‘no worries, see you downstairs’ and he hurries down the stairs to start making breakfast. My little boy asks, ‘what are you going to do, Mum?’. I say ‘the usual, I will watch dramas all day. Because it is a Sunday’

Love,

February
