I meant to write something deep and substantial today, but I’m just exhausted.
So let’s go for short (ish) and sweet instead.
Today’s post is dedicated to Studio Ghibli, one of my very first love.
The first ever Studio Ghibli movie I saw was Castle in the Sky when I was 9 years old. And it’s still my favorite.
I still remember that moment vividly, I was transfixed and it was the most amazing thing 9 year old me had ever seen. If love at first sight exists, THAT was the feeling.
I love the well-lived in worlds that Miyazaki builds, the BREATHTAKING and detailed animation style, the atmospheric music that accompanies every story (shout-out to Joe Hisaishi), the childlike curiosity so distinctive of Ghibli movies, the memorable characters (I had such a crush on Howl hahaha… still do tbh), the immersive quality of it all.
To this day, I know that when I’ve had a terrible week, a Ghibli movie can a always cheer me up (with the exception of Grave of the Fireflies, that’s just heartbreaking I’ll never be over that).
I know that one day when I visit Japan, the first thing on my to-do list will be visiting the Ghibli museum, and I’ll probably cry in there and stay until they close 😂
To Studio Ghibli, for giving me some of my best childhood memories, and filling me with awe and wonder to this day 💖
Spirited Away is hands down one of my favourite films ever. I need to get back to my Studio Ghibli (and Japanese animated films in general) watchlist!!!
Yes I liked the books a lot, I was able to understand the film much better. They are both very different, parallel stories is the best description.
Have you read the second novel, it is set in the same universe and there is a cameo from howl and sophie in the book.
That’s so funny cos I feel like if I hadn’t read the book first I would’ve found the movie much stranger and harder to get my head round lol.
No I haven’t! But I sort of want to? Idk sometimes I just avoid sequels that move forward to much in time haha
Studio Ghibli 💝💝💝
I had the chance to see Joe Hisaishi at a Ghibli’s concert, one of the best gift I’ve gave to myself 💞
I rewatch them from time to time , and still a few I haven’t watched ^^’
also the concert for the 25 years at the Budokan is always delight to watch or listen to <3
(I may hum Totoro theme out of nowhere from time to time, "tonari no Totoro, Totoro~" )
That must’ve been such a dream!!! 😭😭❤️❤️
The Budokan concert was amazing, I also go to it often. My favorite is for sure Kimi o nosete from (you guessed it) Castle in the Sky. I still get goosebumps from it.
That’s lovely! These films are all-time classics, started watching them in the late 90’s, when they started showing them in movie theatres in my country, and I keep watching them at home, nowadays with my kids. Which reminds me of a super cute moment when we were in France on holidays some years ago: my eldest kid was around 4, and out of the blue started singing the Totoro song to a French kid in a park. Without having a common language, they both started singing together, bonded by Totoro-love 🤘
Ghibli movies are pure magic ❤ I remember watching Kiki’s Delivery Service when I was younger and wanting to jump right in and be part of that world. That one will always be special to me but I don’t think I could even pick a favorite, they’re all so good in their own ways

Although unpopular opinion: I like the book of Howl’s Moving Castle much much more than the movie…

Me too. Actually I think of them as parallel stories, if that makes sense.

That does make sense, yes. I don’t know why I understand what you mean, but I do. lol

I like that idea, parallel stories ~ it makes more sense than other ways of trying to reconcile them 🤓

I don’t know anything about anime but that last train gif is beautiful.

I’ve never seen a Studio Ghibli film and I think it’s about time I change that. Which one do you recommend I start with?

YES, it’s time to change that!
I’d recommend starting with Spirited Away, the story will truly absorb you into its world.
