Wonderfully written piece by Sharon Choi, interpreter for all the awards shows for all the “Parasite” writers, producers, actors, and of course, director. She’s the one that interpreted the “barrier of one inch subtitles” remark that shook Hollywood. https://variety.com/2020/film/news/parasite-bong-joon-ho-interpreter-oscars-sharon-choi-1203505571/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

I am a fan. She has been incredible during all the many interviews and award shows etc.
Bong talks in long paragraphs before she is given a chance to interpret but she captured it all, every nuances and humor.

I can’t wait for her movie to come out.

What a fabulous essay. Thank you for sharing, Ally. She captures the challenges and advantages of being multilingual so well, which many Beanies will understand, I am sure! That one-inch barrier line will stay with me for years to come, and I’ll be borrowing that each time I try to convince family, friends and strangers to watch and read and listen to stuff beyond the familiar.

Lovely writing! Interesting insight about multilingualism… Grew up monolingual, but where I live daily life is in two different languages, so at home we speak three different languages (mine and the two local ones). And I work in English. Definitely share her opinion, I feel like I’ve become less fluent in every language each time I’ve added a new one to the mix. The upside is that my brain got better at identifying patterns and connections, the more you know, the easier language learning gets

About Sharon Choi, she seems amazingly down to earth after having lived a months long fantasy… Going to all those places and hanging out with the Parasite crew, it must have been truly amazing!
