Accident-ridden sageuk King’s Dream to end early
Finally, KBS has decided to pull the plug on its much-beleaguered weekend drama King’s Dream, which has had more than its fair share of misfortune, from accidents to more accidents to LOTS MORE ACCIDENTS. (Read the full litany of woes here.) It’s almost a relief to hear that they’ll be cutting out five weeks earlier... More »

Mandate of Heaven: Episode 4
This is a particularly gorgeous episode. Perhaps that’s because it contained scenes to be used as the drama’s opening sequence, or perhaps the change of scenery offers up a whole range of movement and color that we hadn’t seen previously within the palace confines. In any case, our characters and are story swing into full... More »

Mandate of Heaven: Episode 3
Better and better. The story moves quickly, the characters are developing nicely, and puzzle pieces are dropped and pieced together in a nicely suspenseful way. We’re still maneuvering the plot into position to fulfill the latter part of our title, Mandate of Heaven: Joseon Fugitive Story, but I like that the show is spending just... More »

Name That Drama: Non-K-drama edition
Most of the Name That Drama entries have been Korean dramas (or thought to be Korean dramas — looks like quite a number of other Asian dramas have slipped through the ol’ memory cracks!) because, well, we know those best and that’s where we’re most helpful. But I think the ‘Beaniehood is pretty well-versed in... More »

You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin: Episodes 15-16
We take some significant steps forward in several storylines, which makes these two episodes rather satisfying (although there are certain other aspects that are less than gratifying, admittedly). But if we must deal with an increase of wrought emotions and mother-daughter angst, at least we get lovelines stepping it up all around to soften that... More »

Choi Jin-hyuk offered role in Heirs
Woohoo! Choi Jin-hyuk — aka the most romantic gumiho ever — is currently up for upcoming buzz drama Heirs, which stars Lee Min-ho and Park Shin-hye and comes from the pen of star writer Kim Eun-sook (Secret Garden). He’s received the offer and is currently “positively considering” it. Everybody knock some wood, throw some salt,... More »

SBS’s new drama Empire of Gold now has a fixed premiere date and a revised episode count, as well as a new cast member in Lee Hyun-jin, who’ll join the multigenerational saga depicting the power struggles and turmoil of one chaebol group and those in its orbit. Empire of Gold’s central family arises out of... More »

Park Bo-young up for image change in new film
I wouldn’t have pegged these two to co-star in the same project, but Park Bo-young (Werewolf Boy) and idol-actress Gu Hara (City Hunter) are both up for a new movie, roughly translated Hot Blooded Youth. The latest reports state that both stars have agreed to take the film and are in negotiations, so it sounds... More »

Shark begins filming, releases first stills
Why do drama first stills always look so generic, like they could come from any show in the world? That’s my first thought upon seeing these Shark stills, featuring Sohn Ye-jin and Kim Nam-gil as the two headliners of KBS’s upcoming revenge thriller series. Given that the premise itself has a lot going on —... More »
