Smile: Episodes 32-33
These episodes were pretty tongue-in-cheek, bringing back the charm that’s been missing in the last umpteen episodes. Track suits aside, the moment above reminded me of the Royal Tenenbaums—this ensemble cast has really hit its stride, having established their character quirks and playing off each other for comedic effect. Two things: Jung-kil bonding with Hyun-soo... More »

Smile: Episodes 28-29
First, let me say that I’m sorry and embarrassed for taking SO long to do this recap. I intended to get this done about two weeks ago, but despite the best of intentions, I simply couldn’t keep up. I imagine that’s how the writer felt, too, when she got slammed with writing 16 more episodes…... More »

Smile: Episode 27
Nothing particularly substantial happens in this episode. There are lighthearted and enjoyable moments, but it was pretty much a filler episode that rehashes the same themes. The key element that makes this series work is the growth of the characters and the relations between them. Since there’s barely any developmental progress in this episode, it... More »

Smile: Episode 26
Perhaps distance does make the heart grow fonder. I set aside Smile for a while, so as not to watch ahead of writing these recaps (having skimmed up til 29, let me say, it changes the way you perceive the episodes). But when I picked episode 26 back up to write this recap, I was... More »

Smile: Episode 24
I’m back from a brief hiatus—huge thanks to dw4p for plowing forward with the recaps for the past month!!!—and I’ve slowly been catching up on Smile. Yes, slowly. I couldn’t believe it at first; I used to be so excited for the weekends to watch these episodes! The fact that I was fine with leaving... More »

Smile: Episode 18
Love is in the air! To prove it, Hyun-soo will kiss Jung-in… if it kills him. Haha! So as not to give away any spoilers, let’s just say that he makes a lot of kissy faces in this episode. The relationship between Jung-in and Hyun-soo develops very quickly and sweetly because of their heart-on-your-sleeve honesty…... More »

Smile: Episode 17
OMG, WOW. There isso much heart in this episode—the best so far!! Someone remind me to close my slack-jawed mouth before I start drooling over Kang Hyun-soo. Special shoutout: at last! The Han River appears in a Kdrama as more than just a place to scream/vent or have secret arguments/trysts. When Hyun-soo first pulls up... More »

Smile extended to 46 episodes
With its ratings approaching 20%, Smile‘s run has been extended by 16 episodes from its original 30. It will air 46 episodes and wrap at the end of February. An article announcing the extension attributes the steadily increasing ratings and popularity of Smile to its ability to provide comic relief among the many “makjang” dramas... More »

Smile: Episodes 13-14
Smile is hitting exactly the right notes for me. Though not wildly innovative, there’s something organic and sweet about the pacing and tone that I really enjoy. When there’s as much chemistry & development as there is in these two episodes, reducing the repartee to a line of summary just doesn’t do it justice. So... More »

Smile: Episodes 9-10
Tee hee! Love the scene above. Episodes 9 & 10 are pivotal (at last!). The episodes are full of fun moments, character developments and building anticipation in the relationship between Jung-in (Lee Min-jung) and Hyun-soo (Jung Kyung-ho). There’s a lot of ground to cover in these episodes, so without further ado… SONG OF THE DAY... More »
