Dramabeans Meetup in NYC

Hey guys, the date of the Dramabeans Meetup is fast approaching, so we wanted to give you the final details of when and where to come meet us. If you’re in the New York area, stop by The 13th Step for a drink and talk dramas with the DB crew, including our lovely recap minions. We’ll be in the Vice & Virtue Room (we wanted vice only but damn that virtue had to tag along). It is a 21+ event, so you have two weeks to get your fakes made. [A joke! Hahahaha, nervous laughing, totally not serious or endorsing criminal activity in any way.]

Dramabeans Meetup Update

According to our initial polls, most of y’all are up for an in-person meetup with the Dramabeans family, and by our count a whopping 610 of you said you’d really, seriously come to a meetup in the NYC area next month. We’ve locked down a date, and now we need a count in order to proceed.

When: Thursday, April 11, 2013. Tentatively 6-9 pm.
Where: A watering hole in New York City* (details TBA)

*Note that this will most likely be a 21+ event, which we know is a bummer. It’s not our preference and we tried our best to find venues without age restrictions, but for this date it’s probably our best option. We’re definitely going to make sure that future meetups will be open to all ages. (We’re looking at LA as the likeliest locale for a second meetup.)

So. You in or you out? The poll is not binding, of course, but we really do need an accurate picture of what to plan for, so please only vote yes if you really intend to make it. Thanks!

A Dramabeans Meetup? Vote!

We’ve had a lot of requests over the years for a Dramabeans Meetup, and while that seemed like a good idea in theory, we were always daunted by the reality of prying ourselves away from our screens, putting on pants and venturing into the sunlight. And then somebody suggested, “Nighttime could work and pants are still optional.” The idea was too genius not to consider.

So before we get really serious about putting on pants, we thought we’d ask you if you’d be interested in coming to such an event, to gauge interest. Because it would be really sad to be the only two people at our birthday party. [I dunno whatchoo talkin’ ‘bout. My mom will be there. *throws confetti* -GF]

Update: Screencaps, recaps, and Joo-won

What a morning. So stuff happened. There was a lot of emotion. And we here at Dramabeans realized once again what an awesomely supportive and fiercely loyal readership we have. We love you. ♥ Really, it was surprising and touching to see how much people care about this site and what we do. We wouldn’t be here without you.

Here’s what happened: Sites that infringe on material covered by Dramafever’s licensing agreements have been shut down in the past. The company that Dramafever hired to handle these cases saw that we covered a show they licensed. They filed the DMCA notice with our webhost, who warned us to delete or be shut down. We deleted (and replaced with lovely stick figures. You’re welcome).

We have spoken with reps from Dramafever, who have issued their official statement. They retracted the DMCA notice and have informed us we can resume screencapping. We’re a little gun-shy about that at the moment (hence the stick figures. You’re welcome), but will try easing back into normal operating procedure and bringing back the pretty.

We have to admit that the recent shakeups in the drama fan community have us uneasy, from streaming site and torrent crackdowns to fan recap sites being taken offline, and we’re not quite sure how the landscape may change in the future. We’re grateful to still be here, and we’re committed to sticking around, even if that requires evolving with the shifting sands (and maybe learning how to draw better stick figures). So thank you again for all the love and support, which is what keeps us going. Y’all rock.

Announcement: Level 7 Civil Servant recaps now with less Joo-won

Okay, I have to get serious for a moment to address an issue that has just come to our attention. Dramabeans has had its very first DCMA takedown notice delivered, and sadly this is not a “Baby’s first milestone” sort of celebratory event. The notice came with scary legal lingo and accompanying threats to discontinue our hosting service if we don’t comply with the demands to take down our Level 7 Civil Service recaps.

Looking around, you may notice a bit of a change — nothin’ fancy, just a few tweaks here and there, a splash of color to freshen up these parts. Every spring cleaning needs a fresh coat of paint to liven up the joint, right? So maybe we’re a little slow and got to spring a little late; that fourth dimension can get tricky that way.

It’s nothing quite as dramatic as the last time we introduced a new look — remember the wailing and gnashing of teeth then? Ah, good times. But we love the update and hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we do.

You should find all functionality to be the same, so no worries on that front. (If you run into problems, please let us know in the comments.) It’s mostly a cosmetic change; think of us as an Act 2 drama heroine getting her transformation montage — just without the chaebol hottie shaking his head no at every other outfit. ‘Cause we can foot our own makeover bill, thanks. Dramaland, take note!

CD/OST giveaway winners!

Thanks to everyone who entered our CD/OST giveaway! Now it’s time to announce our winners.

We had a great time reading through all y’all’s entries, because it’s refreshing to step back from the dramas themselves once in a while and hear not just about how awesome a show is (or isn’t), but also what it means to you personally. ‘Cause if there’s one thing we’ve learned while running Dramabeans, it’s that these shows are so much more than mere TV shows. And we’re always touched, amazed, and a little surprised to hear the ways in which a drama series can affect a life in a real and significant way.

That is, it was tons of fun until we remembered we had to pick just ONE entry to give a CD to. Oy, that was hard. I know I can speak for everyone when I say we all struggled to pick just one, and probably would’ve loved to give away a dozen just so we wouldn’t have to choose.

But we made up the rules, so like ‘em or not (curses, Past Us!), we had to abide by them. If you are a winner, we will be in contact with you shortly!
