girlfriday: Wheee! That was one long birthday party! I know we only turned five, but it feels like we turned 500! Thanks so much for all the love and support for Dramabeans all month long.

javabeans: And while it’s the site having the birthday, we wanted to make the party about the readers, since otherwise it would be a party of two, hosted by our special friends soju and nostalgia.

girlfriday: And mostly when we do that, we get strange looks from other people. We know it’s mushy, but we wouldn’t be where we are without you guys, so we wanted to make sure and say thank you to all our faithful readers from around the globe.

javabeans: Yes. It makes us feel better for loading them down with recaps. What, this recap factory doesn’t run on unicorn dust and fangirl dreams, you know.

girlfriday: No, it runs on the blood sweat and tears of the few willing to be paid in Dramabeans Dollars, aka Abs Photos of the Day.

girlfriday: Week three of the blazin’ birthday giveaway extravaganza extraordinaire!

javabeans: You know what that means: More presents! Man, what a spoiled 5-year-old Dramabeans is.

girlfriday: Right? If DB were a kid, we’d have one needy brat on our hands.

javabeans: Then again, most 5-year-olds receive presents, and DB’s giving ‘em out. Although I don’t know who gave that kid my credit card info.

girlfriday: Is that what’s going on? That explains a lot. This time we’re giving away a brand new iPod nano, but that’s not the best part. It’s chock full o’ goodies! It’s got a Javabeans Playlist on it, which I’m gonna venture to say is worth more than the player itself.

javabeans: We’ve also got a few more premium memberships to give out to Dramafever, in case you want to get friends/siblings/parents addicted to your drama poison of choice. Because as we know, drama addictions are best shared, not cured.

girlfriday: Yeah, rehab’s for quitters, and we’re no quitters!

Transplant Informers hosts City Hunter DVD sweepstakes

Heads up, giveaway lovers!

We’re not the only ones holding giveaways this month: We’ve gotten word of a City Hunter DVD sweepstakes being held by Transplant Informers (a blog in association with the Asian American Donor Program), which has launched a project using Korean dramas as an outlet to educate about bone marrow donation. (Using K-drama powers for good over evil — we approve.)

As City Hunter fans will recall, the drama features a bone marrow transplant storyline. (And if you haven’t seen it, you can win the DVD set and see it firsthand.) Using the show as a launching pad for educational commentary about bone marrow donation, Transplant Informers is giving away copies of the drama’s DVD boxset. It seems like a creative way to spread the word about a worthy cause, and spread the City Hunter love around.

javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.

girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!

javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.

girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.

javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.

girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”

girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.

Just wanted to share some awesome off-topic bloggy news: Dramabeans was entered in the Graphic Design USA American Graphic Design Awards Competition 2011, and our site was selected as a winner! Well technically, the lovely, awesome, talented designers at JPD Studio won the award. Because they did all the hard work. (Details, psh.) But we feel like we have bragging rights by association. You guys do too, since this is your home as much as ours, so champagne for everyone!

A Gathering of Writers to Say Thank You

Introduction

Unbeknownst to Javabeans or Girlfriday, many of the magical creatures in k-dramaland gathered together in a secluded glen within the kingdom of Dramabeans, long after the fey mistresses of the kingdom had gone to bed. They had known for some time that Dramabeans was nearing its 5,000th post (!!), and they racked their brains to come up with a suitable way to say thank you to celebrate the occasion.

For certain, were it not for Javabeans and Girlfriday, many of these creatures would be hanging out on tough street corners, or getting into dramas that no self-respecting elf or gnome should watch. How to thank the lifegivers of Dramabeans for providing so much entertainment, knowledge, heart, community and love? With that in mind, may I present the well-wishes and appreciation from the new and the old: a panoply of heartfelt congratulations for Post no. 5,000!
