Modern rock band Zitten splits

Well, this is a bummer, since I love this group and their moody, melodic music: The two-member indie rock band 짙은, or Zitten, is losing one of its members. Granted, the group isn’t necessarily over, because singer-guitarist Sung Yong-wook will be continuing on as a solo act under the name Zitten. But losing drummer Yoon Hyung-ro still means that the old partnership is over.

The band posted the notice on the 17th to their internet fan cafe, and explained the amicable separation. Yoon wrote, “I want to see it as the beautiful close to a successful and happy season. As with Zitten’s beginning, I hope you’ll think of this as the planning of a trip to fill up on more stories to tell.”

Remaining member Sung Yong-wook explained that they’d come together considering it more of a project than a band. The two are close friends and see each other nearly daily, and likely that won’t change.

Zitten – “If.” This is probably my favorite track of theirs, or at least one of my top picks.

More songs! And this time, they’re sung by some of your favorite (or not) actors. This list is hardly comprehensive, and I picked mostly those actors who weren’t singers first. (And if they were, they are generally stars who are not known for their singing, despite their origins. See: Kim Kang-woo’s awesome beginnings as a soft-ballad rapper. That video takes forever to load, but trust me, it’s worth it.)

Some of these songs come from OSTs, some from digital singles, and some as featured tracks on other singers’ albums.

Jo Hyun-jae sings for 49 Days

Kang-ahhhhh, singing for me? *Swoon*

Actor Jo Hyun-jae is contributing a track to the soundtrack for his current drama, 49 Days, following fellow castmate Jung Il-woo, aka our sassy Scheduler, who previously recorded a track. Jo’s contribution is titled “Even If I Live Just One Day,” and was released just today.

As you might guess, given the recent turn of events in the drama, it’s something of a confession piece as Kang starts expressing more of his love for Ji-hyun, which has hitherto been massively repressed by his extreme awkwardness displaying any emotion at all. He’s workin’ on it.

Kim Haneul records a single

Actress Kim Haneul (Road No. 1) will be taking another turn in the recording studio by recording a single for famous songwriter (also singer) Yang Jung-seung, who has written tunes for the likes of Jo Sung-mo and Ivy.

Her track will be a part of Yang’s Stars in the Night Sky 3 compilation, and will be her first time recording as a featured artist on someone else’s album. It won’t be her first recording ever, though, since she sang a track on the soundtrack to her popular 2008 drama On Air, “Sky Love,” which you can listen to below.

Legend’s Comeback Madonna Band releases an album

First there were the live performances, then the possibility of a musical adaptation. Now the band within SBS drama I Am Legend, called the Comeback Madonna Band, will be releasing a real full album and perform on live stages.

The band members and actresses are: Kim Jung-eun on vocals and guitar, Hong Ji-min on bass, Juni on guitar, and Jang Shin-young on drums. I can actually see this working, because all of the band members play their own instruments, and most have prior performance experience. Both Juni and Hong Ji-min had professional music experience prior to television acting — Juni in a rock band, and Hong in musicals — while Kim has performed a few times on her music/talk show Chocolate.

As mentioned previously, music director Lee Jae-hak has been leading the band members in rehearsals, and the foursome have recorded thirteen songs. We’ve heard a number of them in the drama, but I expect more to come in coming episodes. The album will be released before the drama goes off the air and features rocked-up remakes of old pop hits, as well as a couple originals (“Comeback Madonna” and “You”).

A source with the production team said that the four ladies have developed a deep rapport and are planning to perform at live concerts after the drama’s end. There are also plans for appearances on television music programs. The album will have the added function of being their guide in mapping out the proposed musical production, which may or may not use the same actors. That decision has not yet been made.

Already songs from the soundtrack are proving to be a hit; the drama versions of “A Million Roses” and “Love Love Love” have performed very well on online music charts, making it to No. 1 on portal site Daum’s music chart rankings on the 23rd.

Actress Lee Shi-young (Birth of the Rich, Boys Before Flowers) returns to music, this time with a contribution to Honey Family‘s new album, Volume 5.

Lee sang a track on the OST of her last film, 2009′s The Descendant of Hong Gil Dong, and also put out a digital single remake of a Beige’s [지지리], but has never formally debuted as a singer. Her collaboration with Honey Family isn’t quite a debut in and of itself, but the news has fans greatly anticipating her career as a vocalist.

Lee Dong-wook makes his directorial debut

Lee Dong-wook is currently serving in the military, but it turns out he has another work to unveil. Before he enlisted, he had made his directorial debut with a music video for new singer Zozo; the video for the song, called “Dandelion,” has now been released. (Watch below.) In addition to Zozo’s rapping, the song features Park Ji-heon of V.O.S.

Lee directed the music video for free and was brought to the project via his longtime friend, singer KCM. He also acts in the MV as a high school student. Prior to this, his last acting project before his August enlistment was last summer’s drama series Partner and the film Bean Paste, which is planning to release sometime this year.

Huh… Lee Dong-wook, directing. Who’d've thought?

…wearing a skirt? (Not that I’m that surprised.)

Lee Min-ki took the stage on the evening of January 29 at Seoul’s Mel-On Ax Hall for the newly launched “Locksmith Adventure,” the first concert put on by the Locksmith music label. Headliners were the Belgian electronic duo 2 Many DJs, while other artists such as electronic artist Sheean (with whom Lee previously recorded a song) and Japanese group 80kidz also performed.
