Continuing the grand tradition of over-the-top, supertragic kpop music videos is this latest one starring actors Lee Min-jung (Boys Before Flowers) and Kim Seung-woo (How to Meet a Perfect Neighbor), for new male pop group December.

The MV was shot on the afternoon of August 17 in Yangju, Kyunggi province.

A Grump Reviews 2008 [Year in Review, Part 2]

How should one convey bad news in writing? By creating a buffer first. Avoid traumatizing your audience with the bad news all at once, but instead cushion the blow so that you can maintain goodwill. That textbook approach (business communication, by the way) would be dandy if the crop of 2008 dramas I watched was anything like the stellar quality of 2007. But no, this was a harvest to make one downright grumpy.

This time last year, eight dramas vied to be in my Top 3. Even the ones that disappointed weren’t half bad and at least I finished them. Not this year. I picked up around twenty dramas and dropped at least fifteen. “Dropped” is putting it mildly. I ran from some of them like a kid fleeing an apparition: hands in the air and hair standing on end. As the year wore on, my patience wore thin and my grumpiness increased.

So, no, I can’t use the buffer approach when reviewing this year’s dramas. Hedging doesn’t work for this grumpy cookie. I will present to you the worst dramas first, followed by the so-so ones, and then the few gems of 2008. Even though the year was overcast and gloomy, the sun broke through the clouds occasionally and when it did the effect was glorious. Let’s get the bad news out of the way and we can enjoy the good stuff, shall we?

Eastern Barbie meets Western Barbie? Han Chae-young (of the upcoming Boys Before Flowers) poses with Hollywood glamour goddess Charlize Theron at the “Christian Dior and Chinese Artists” art exhibit in Beijing. The gala event took place at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art on the 15th; Theron is the spokesmodel for Dior’s J’adore fragrance.

I know So Ji-sub is something of an iconoclast who does his own thing. But just because he’s talented doesn’t mean he doesn’t cultivate his image just as carefully as his more conventional peers, and I’ll go on record as disliking — nay, hating — his purposely aggro, cornrow-sporting, woman-choking image as of late.

Ha Ha Hot or Duck Duck Goose?

Sometimes you look at a picture and you know it’s off, but there are just so many things to comment on that you can’t articulate any of them.

Yeah, this ad for Converse featuring its new brand models, Choi Kang-hee (My Sweet Seoul) and boy-bander Kim Hyun-joong (of SS501), is one of those instances.

Converse is selling… what, exactly? The ad says “down jumper” but the picture tells me “goose mothering skills.”

Giving a shout-out from training camp

A week after we said goodbye and sent off actor/rapper Eric to army duty, this photo has been released of the idol star in military camo.

He’ll spend four weeks at training camp in South Chungcheong province, city of Nonsan.
