His former Unstoppable High Kick castmates Kim Hye-sung and Jung Il-woo have already done it (Kim in the first episode and Jung more recently in the episode that aired on October 28), so now it’s Kim Bum’s turn to make a cameo appearance on that sitcom’s pseudo-sequel, High Kick Through the Roof.
Originally, Kim Bum [...]

Originally, Kim Bum was set to appear with Jung Il-woo but explained, “The director felt it would be a waste for us to come out at once. So when Il-woo hyung went to shoot, I went along and just watched. I’ll be filming soon. I think I’ll find out the concrete details of the shoot on that day. I’m already looking forward to it.”

In the original series, Kim Bum played an innocent, goofy high school student who was best friends with Kim Hye-sung (the two boys were unabashed with their best-friend love for each other, to the annoyance of Kim’s cooler, rebellious younger brother Jung Il-woo). For that reason, Kim Bum started out hating Kim Hye-sung’s girlfriend (played as a ditz by Park Min-young), and complications arose when he started developing feelings for her, too. According to earlier reports, Park is also planning to make a cameo, and if it happens, she’ll probably be next.

From what I’ve seen (and I want to see more), High Kick Through the Roof is cute and entertaining — if only it weren’t so long! It has been doing well in the ratings and raising the profiles of its young leads, namely Shin Se-kyung, Hwang Jung-eum, Seo Shin-ae, and Yoon Shi-yoon. With the numbers creeping up into the high teens, the latest episode drew a 19.7%, putting it within a hair of breaking the 20% mark.

Here are the stills for Jung Il-woo’s (Return of Iljimae) upcoming cameo appearance on the family sitcom High Kick Through the Roof, where he’ll share a romantic storyline with one of its regular cast members, played by singer-actress Hwang Jung-eum. In it, she loses her beloved puppy due to the carelessness of Ji-hoon (Daniel Choi’s character), and searches far and wide to recover him. As a result, we learn that the dog used to belong to Il-woo, and because it misses his former owner, he had run away to Il-woo’s old house to find him.

It was announced at the start that High Kick Through the Roof, the sitcom sequel to 2006’s very popular Unstoppable High Kick, would feature cameos from the cast members of the original, which is a show to which its young up-and-comers largely owe their current success (they are Jung Il-woo, Kim Bum, Kim Hye-sung, Park Min-young). High Kick Through the Roof featured an appearance from Kim Hye-sung right off the bat in its first episode, and the next cameo falls to Jung Il-woo, who played Kim’s younger brother in Unstoppable.

With this appearance, Jung will play the first love of university student Hwang Jung-eum. Jung was initially scheduled to appear in Episode 31, but that has been pushed back to Episode 35. However, due to the Korean Series (baseball championships), the actual airdate is yet unclear.

A rep from Chorokbaem Media, the series’ production company, said, “Jung Il-woo will shoot his portion in the middle of this week. However, the results of the Korea Series may result in a postponed broadcast so it is difficult to announce when his portion will air.”

High Kick Through the Roof is performing strongly, and although I don’t think it has yet reached the levels of popularity that its predecessor had, there’s still a lot of time for it to pick up steam. I had intended to keep an eye on this show and got very behind, but I caught the first two episodes and found it cute and watchable.

Actor Lee Chun-hee (aka “Chunderella”) was a fan favorite on the SBS sitcom program Family Outing, and it was to much disappointment that he chose to leave the show in June against the producers’ requests. Now he has come out and admitted, “I regret leaving.”

Lee Chun-hee candidly expressed his regrets on the September 21st broadcast of talk show Ya Shim Man Man 2 when asked about his departure. He explained that he’d watched the show recently: “Seeing everyone get along so well with the new members without me bothered me.” He even disclosed that CF requests and his income had dropped since leaving the show, eliciting big laughs with his forthrightness.

Next up for Chunderella is the upcoming comic SBS drama series Smile, starring Lee Min-jung and Jung Kyung-ho; he plays the brother to Lee Min-jung and the immature son of a rich family who loses everything and moves in with their former chauffeur’s family.

The new sitcom High Kick Through the Roof [지붕 뚫고 하이킥] hasn’t even aired yet, and already it’s been licensed for a Japanese broadcast. The production company, Green Snake Media, has sold the family sitcom to a subsidiary of Sony for a November broadcast on the So-net channel in Japan. The Korean broadcast will premiere next week.

They must be really confident in the series, based solely off the popularity of its predecessor, Unstoppable High Kick, which was a hit back in 2006 and 2007 and catapulted several young stars to fame. This is the first time that a Korean sitcom has been licensed for an overseas broadcast prior to airing, and Japan’s run will commence before the Korean run is finished. (It’s not the first time a drama series has been pre-sold, usually based on the strength of a star’s name such as Choi Ji-woo, but sitcoms with their larger episode orders are another kettle of fish.)

The High Kick spinoff (or “High Kick 2″) stars (in the older generation) veteran actors Lee Soon-jae, Kim Ja-ok, Oh Hyun-kyung, and Jung Bo-seok. Its younger generation is where most curiosity is directed, as people wonder who will be the breakout star of this round, like Jung Il-woo and Kim Bum were in the first. Those cast members include Shin Sae-kyung, Seo Shin-ae, and Hwang Jung-eum.

High Kick Through the Roof airs every weeknight (Monday through Friday) and premieres September 7.

For the new High Kick Through the Roof

Check out these new posters for the new sitcom High Kick 2, or High Kick Through the Roof [지붕뚫고 하이킥]. Although this is neither a sequel nor spinoff to the original series (Unstoppable High Kick), they’ve no doubt mimicked the style of the first series closely, drawing upon the success of the first to buoy this new project.

For instance, the above image is nearly an exact re-creation of a previous poster (see below) that probably looks familiar to old High Kick fans. Also, Through the Roof employs many of the same relationship dynamics as its predecessor (see a more detailed description here). There is a key plot divergence, however — main characters played by Shin Sae-kyung and Seo Shin-ae join the central family as maids — and I hope that will be enough to give the new sitcom its own identity.
