As you may know, actress Gu Hye-sun (Boys Before Flowers) has been planning an exhibition of her drawings, which just opened this week in Seoul’s Insadong La Mer Gallery.

The exhibition is showing under the name “Tango” — which you may recall is also the title of her recently released novel. Coming hot on the heels of her leading role in the super-popular hit drama Boys Before Flowers, Gu’s book has been selling very well, and now her art show has also attracted an impressive attendance as fans have flocked to take a look. (Since the opening on July 1, weekday attendance has averaged 700 per day, while weekend traffic increased to 1,000. Many have come from Gu’s online fan café and members of fan forum DC Gallery.)

Proceeds from this event will go to charity, toward the “With Campaign.” Fan club members also collected funds and donated them at the art exhibit. The exhibit, which features fifty of Gu’s drawings, will close on July 7.

Honey Lee at a Neutrogena fan-signing http://www.dramabeans.com/2009/07/honey-lee-at-a-neutrogena-fan-signing/ http://www.dramabeans.com/2009/07/honey-lee-at-a-neutrogena-fan-signing/#comments Sat, 04 Jul 2009 18:00:54 +0000 javabeans http://www.dramabeans.com/?p=8490

Ah, Honey Lee is so pretty. The classical musician, former Miss Korea, and now actress is currently the face of Neutrogena; as its brand model, she held a promotional fan-signing on July 4 as a tie-in event with their sunblock product.

You can currently watch Honey Lee acting in the role of a cool, smart lawyer in the KBS Wednesday-Thursday drama Partner (and doing a pretty good job at it, actually)

High Kick Season 2 coming in September http://www.dramabeans.com/2009/07/high-kick-season-2-coming-in-september/ http://www.dramabeans.com/2009/07/high-kick-season-2-coming-in-september/#comments Sat, 04 Jul 2009 00:08:55 +0000 javabeans http://www.dramabeans.com/?p=8487
The young cast of “Unstoppable High Kick” Season 1

Hmm….. When it was announced that the popular family sitcom Unstoppable High Kick was thinking of another season, I was skeptical that it would actually happen, if only because a great part of its charm was its hot young cast of new faces, and they’ve all gone on to bigger things. They include: Jung Il-woo (Return of Iljimae), Kim Bum (Boys Before Flowers), Kim Hye-sung (Boy Meets Boy), and Park Min-young (Ja Myung Go).

And yet, production is indeed under way for a second season, and will bring back gruff grandpa Lee Soon-jae — but switch the rest of the actors. Among them are Jung Bo-seok (La Dolce Vita, Dae Jo Young) in the dad’s role (acted in the original by comedian Jung Jun–ha) and Oh Hyun-kyung (First Wives Club) in the mom’s role (originally acted by musical actress Park Hae-mi). Grandma Na Mun-hee will not return, and the season will start fresh with new storylines. The series is currently auditioning for its new set of fresh faces.

Season 2 is not yet on MBC’s official fall schedule, but it looks like a promising follow-up to the currently airing sitcom Tae-hee, Hye-gyo, Ji-hyun.

I don’t know about this. I have a lot of affection for Unstoppable High Kick, but without any of my favorite characters returning, it seems like just a weak excuse to slap a successful name onto a new sitcom, doesn’t it?

Song Yoon-ah takes on Wedding Dress http://www.dramabeans.com/2009/07/song-yoon-ah-takes-on-wedding-dress/ http://www.dramabeans.com/2009/07/song-yoon-ah-takes-on-wedding-dress/#comments Fri, 03 Jul 2009 21:14:44 +0000 javabeans http://www.dramabeans.com/?p=8482

It hasn’t been long since actress Song Yoon-ah (On Air) wore her own wedding dress at her May wedding to actor Sol Kyung-gu, and now she takes on another Wedding Dress [웨딩드레스], which will be her first project as a married woman.

Wedding Dress is described as a weepie film centering around a single mom suffering from cancer raising an eight-year-old daughter; her daughter is played by child actress Kim Hyang-gi, who is adorable — she was the precocious little girl in When Night Comes and Bad Couple. Filming the project is the same director of films For Horowitz and The Truck, Kwon Hyung-jin.

The movie begins filming July 15.

Sigh! I’m exhausted. My new living space is covered in boxes and books and packing materials, and I am still internet-less. On one hand, I have lived a week now without internet access, and have found that there IS life without it. On the other hand, it’s not a very pleasant (or convenient) life. Internet fairies, won’t you come and help a poor addict out?

Triple: Episode 6 http://www.dramabeans.com/2009/07/triple-episode-6/ http://www.dramabeans.com/2009/07/triple-episode-6/#comments Thu, 02 Jul 2009 21:37:42 +0000 javabeans http://www.dramabeans.com/?p=8469

I think Episode 6 was the best episode so far, although I haven’t seen 7 yet so I can’t speak to this week’s episodes. Dramas that have “themed” episodes can go either way, because if a writer takes the theme too far, it can be overbearing in forcing the events to match the theme. I thought The World They Live In often erred too much on that side of excess. On the other hand, I’m liking the way the skating-related themes are being drawn to Triple’s plot, which draw certain parallels but haven’t (yet) gone too far in making those connections.

Hyun Bin isn’t afraid of the Friend comparisons http://www.dramabeans.com/2009/07/hyun-bin-isnt-afraid-of-the-friend-comparisons/ http://www.dramabeans.com/2009/07/hyun-bin-isnt-afraid-of-the-friend-comparisons/#comments Wed, 01 Jul 2009 20:33:58 +0000 javabeans http://www.dramabeans.com/?p=8427

I haven’t had a chance to see the newly aired drama Friend, Our Legend [친구, 우리들의 전설], but perhaps you have. It premiered this past weekend on MBC, and has been the source of a lot of curiosity, given its cast (Hyun Bin, Kim Min-joon), director (Kwak Kyung-taek of the film), and high-profile source material (the movie Friend) which starred one of Korea’s most famous and well-liked movie actors, Jang Dong-gun. Naturally people have been prepared to draw comparisons between the two versions (and two lead actors in the main role of Dong-soo).

On the drama’s upside, the entire series has been produced in its entirety, meaning that the actors are now done filming and the production won’t be in a race to beat the clock to get the episodes on air. Furthermore, having the same director behind both projects pre-empts some of the comments that the drama is merely aping the style of its film predecessor.

Here’s an interview with Hyun Bin from last week, published just a few days before the drama’s premiere.
