Beanie level: The Goblin’s underpants

Picked up #SuddenlyThisSummer over the weekend…

…and it’s so good; it hurts to know I really must prep myself for some real nasty angst later in the series. The thing I like about this C-Drama is the male lead isn’t perfect at everything he does. The subjects he’s struggling in happen to be what female lead excels at. They literally study together to get their marks up enough to get into university.

SPOILERS
I enjoyed He Luo’s character growth so much in their high school years. The determination she put to get into the university was truly remarkable. I’ve seen so many high school dramas that focused on main leads studying hard, but this drama will really make you feel like you’re with her in every step she takes to succeed. I might have teared up when she announced that she had made it in! TT____TT That was just a great success story.

My heart really broke with them with that plot twist that separated them. Mr. Smart guy didn’t make it into their first uni choice, but she did! TT_____TT

I’ve only got up to 11 episodes so far, and I`m really scared to like it a lot and be burned by whatever’s going to happen to He Luo and Zhang Yuan. I mean, yes, they’re 18, so young, and they have a whole life ahead of them. I know they can’t be happy at all times, and this long-distance relationship isn’t helping them, but I hope they get to stand the test of time.

Thank you @Ayaan for recommending! I wondered if you had finished this yet and your final thoughts on it! ^___^

Yes I finally got round to finishing the drama, it took a while because I needed a break during the angst period.. I think what I love most about the show is He Luo’s growth and her unwavering determination to see her goals through. It was very moving to see He Luo’s efforts had paid off and she had gotten into university. In dramas it seems that the female lead has to sacrifice her ambitions for love and I’m really glad that He Luo didnt do that and Zhang Yuan didn’t pressure her.

Because I watched this show shortly after A Love So Beautiful, I think I was expecting the more of the same storyline.
Suddenly this summer, I feel is quite realistic of a long distance relationship and the pressure of being in love at such a young age. I didnt realise until reading the translated novel of a love so beautiful , why romance at their age was so discouraged.

I could go on, but I think I will spoil the drama for you! Let me know what you think when you finish the show.
I do think the ending was the best thing for all the characters, the show could have ended 5 episodes earlier in my opinion.

      Thank you for your review!

I’m on ep 21 now and yep definitely starting to feel the angst now, and it’s most likely due to Zhang Yuan. I should have known that one lie from their high school, the one that got He Luo’s hopes up that they would go to same uni together, wouldn’t be the first and last. His lies build up, no matter how good his intentions were. It then becomes easier for him to lie over time. I really feel like he has lost his compass when he was left in town. It’s heartbreaking to see his impatience and impulse actions to be with He Luo. He’s obsessed with her it’s very unhealthy now. This was exactly what happened in their high school days leading to their final exam – He Luo didn’t get distracted, but Zhang Yuan was. We could blame the accident that happened on his wrist that he didn’t make it in to his first choice uni, but I know distraction and overconfidence got over his head. And him juggling between school and work is a deja Vu of what he did in high school. He’s gone way over his head again and wanting a shortcut to get to his goal. He has so much potential, but he keeps losing sight of what the priorities are. 💔

I love He Luo more as the story progresses because she is homesick but she gets her head in the game no matter what. Her determination in high school becomes her strongest point even as she’s just so strong and resilient. She cries over the fact that she’s missing Zhang Yuan so bad, but she strives so hard to keep their distance shorter in a more practical way.

Oh wells let’s see how much more I can stand Zhang Yuan’s stubbornness….😏

      1
      1

I think I stopped watching around then, it’s so frustrating to see Zhang yuan destroy their relationship because he didnt want He Luo to be hurt.
The issue is his lies and inability to own up to his mistakes or choices is what drew them apart.

I definitely think the pressure of having to provide for He luo or be the perfect guy affected him. Every time there is a set back, he just gives up and doesn’t ask for help.
I definitely think both of them need space to work out who they are individually.

How do you like the show, @13infamyss? I have seen the first couple episodes a while back and remember enjoying the cute, but for some reason I just forgot to pick it back up!

I do remember that the acting was green (particularly the ML) and the production value low. Is the cute make it worth the watch?

    1
    2

This is the kind of drama you’ll watch when you’re totally free and don’t have anywhere else to spend your time on 😬

The plot is really dated when it’s set in modern time. I used to sit through the entire episodes then around the Season 2, I started skipping scenes that didn’t have the main leads in it (the antagonist and how low they could get to destroy the reputation of their competitor). Then their noble idiocy is….. smh 🤦‍♀️

I didn’t think this would trigger me so much, but I was really bothered by the amount of wardrobes they reused the entire 24 episodes 😅 The Main Lead’s Secretary literally had 3 outfits. I wish they made an effort to find somebody to sponsor them of wardrobes. 😓

And yep Main Lead’s acting is… bad. They’re very cute together, but he just can’t act. Lol he looked convincing though during his heartbreaking moment – he looked really broken sitting on the floor of his house, drenched from the rain. But I didn’t feel anything cuz I know what he’s crying about and it’s his stupid noble idiocy 😅😅😅

Anyways long story cut short, I think the cute doesn’t really make it worthwhile. I think I’m gonna stick to fans’ recommendations for now on what to watch, instead of me venturing out and randomly clicking Fanmade MVs which become the decision factor of dramas to watch 😅😅😅

But I didn’t feel anything cuz I know what he’s crying about and it’s his stupid noble idiocy

Thank you for the review, Fammie!! I might keep this drama in my backpocket if I need a little time-kill pick-me-up!

BTW I was already wondering in the first few episodes if he was ever going to change out of his maroon suit!! 😂

          You’re welcome!

I have picked up Suddenly This Summer yesterday. Have you seen it? I have seen 10/30 episodes and it’s very good so far. I heard the angst will be super nasty in the long run so I’m kinda prepping myself for it, but at the moment it’s really good. I might post some gifs later cuz main leads are so cute ☺️☺️ I feel their pain!

I have not seen Suddenly This Summer, but it has been on my list for a while. I really like the actor Bai Yu but I did hear that it gets quite angsty so I am waiting for myself to be in the right mood to watch it! 😂

Look forward to reading you review, @13infamyss!

Watching a Chinese web drama, #TimeTeachesMeToLove while I wait for new episodes of my Monday/Tuesday dramas… I`m currently on 18/24 episodes.

I`m not gonna give my 2 cents on the subpar acting of the male lead, nor how is it a been-there-done-that kind of plot, not even how low budgeted this production is that I honestly think they only have 5 (if lucky!) wardrobes per actor….

Basically, I`m just here for the cute stuff…

Just saw first two episodes of #MyFellowCitizens and it’s pretty good. Their beginning was sweet but super quick. They were longing for love so bad that when they found each other, everything felt so perfect, and that clouded their thoughts in taking the time to get to know one another.

They rushed and got married, afraid to lose each other the longer they waited. Two years later, they are barely saying hi.

The husband, who’s making a living as a con artist now has his guard up all the time around his wife, whose profession is a detective.

The first, set up episode was meh, but the second episode was really good..😋 I was rolling in laughter the whole time. I dont know if I’ll watch all of it but it’s good.

Yeah I`m not sure if I`m in it in the long haul either, but it was a solid first 2 episodes for me! I seem to like the badass antagonist Hoo Ja too. She’s out there trying to win the world of loan sharks, lol

      1

Hehehe I’m watching it pretty much for Hoo Ja, although it was funny to see Choi Siwon get trapped into hero mode against his will. Kind of like Chief Kim.

But Hoo Ja – HAHAHAHAHAHHA Kim Min Jung is hilarious. 😀

The charm of first love stories – A Love So Beautiful appreciation post

I just finished binge watching this wonderful series, and I have nothing but praise for this drama. You are so worth the sleepless four nights ^_^

A Love So Beautiful takes you back to that wonderful time of youth – young love, childish heartbreaks, jealousy, forming friendships, imagining the uncertain future. Even though we pretty much followed a girl’s journey on how she ends up becoming her first love’s fiancée, the drama did not forget to show how wonderful it is to be young, to live in the moment, to create memories with strangers who, sometimes, will end up to be the most important people in your life.

*ESSAY WITH SPOILERS BELOW*

The plot is certainly not something new – a girl who falls for the smartest boy in class, and boy acts indifferent to her and her feelings for him. But what makes it a gem of its own is how it manages to flesh out the characters. They just feel so genuine – so damn relatable.

Xiaoxi and Jiang Chen’s relationship is interesting to me because theirs isn’t really what I would consider childhood best friends turn sweethearts. They are individuals who happened to live in the same building for many years and went to elementary, middle, senior high school together. They don’t really have that same childhood connection that I felt from Young Jae and Shi Won from Reply 1997, or Trash and Na Jung from Reply 1994, or Taek and Duk Seon from Reply 1988. Their dynamic is different in that we didn’t really get to see how they were like all those years growing up – Reply series are perfect storytellers in this area. Instead, we are shown that even though they don’t hang out after school hours, nor do they eat and share meals together every single time, there remains comfort and level of understanding between them, and it’s most likely because they have become a habit – to see each other every single day of their lives whether they want to or not.

Xiaoxi chases Jiang Chen wherever he goes; she wears her heart on her sleeve and displays her great affection for him. We, then, have Jiang Chen, who in the beginning of the story, appears to be so uninterested to this girl, who never left his field of vision since they were kids, and seems to be looking down on her too. But by Episode 1 epilogue, we see that her feelings are, in fact, very much reciprocated. Their entire high school and uni years were spent in growing their budding feelings for each other, and discovering how being together became so comfortable that it is so easy to take that for granted.

Jiang Chen’s interest in Xiaoxi remained to be so fascinating to me throughout the episodes, and I kept thinking to myself how the hell did he end up falling for her so bad (as cute as it was, I needed to rationale this, and darnit, I don’t have any recap websites to let me read and learn this!). I thank the drama gods that this did allow us to see the chain of events through his eyes and I completely agree with his reasoning – he fell for her because she is the constant in his life. Everyone around him that he cared for left him for all different reasons. He is aloof and uninterested in anything because of the nature he grew up in. So it does make sense that the comfort Xiaoxi brings in that when he turns around, she is there has become the reason that he loves her. No other girls would simply made him feel the way he feels for her because of that.

I am so happy to see that you like A Love So Beautiful!! It is definitely one of my top 5 C-dramas. I do appreciate that we got to see little bits and pieces of JC’s feelings toward XX throughout the series, but I really wished that the show didn’t wait so long to give us that “confession” scene when he told BS over drinks about how he felt toward her over the years. It did make so much sense but I wished the viewers were clued in a few episodes earlier.

Ohhhhhh @kimbapnoona I love it a lot 😭😭😭 I’m going through such a hard case of withdrawal syndrome for a drama I only got to see in less than a week. 😭 This is my second C-Drama, and it definitely is sitting as one of the top favourites for me! My only regret is that I had waited this long to discover such a gem drama 😌

Yes, it had its frustrating moments, and I had a strong dislike of Jiang Chen in those moments when he would get tounge-tied, shut people off, and not really let anyone in and understand him whenever he is conflicted. That Included Xiaoxi. And I agree when you said you wished we weren’t kept in the dark till the end to see his point of view. But to be really honest, I completely forgot those frustrating moments once I finally figured him out and realized that he did have such a great character development! Huehehe He went from being this Uber obnoxious tsundere guy to someone so dependable, who willingly opens up everything to his significant other. I forgave all his wrongdoings after I saw how hard he worked to get her back! Lol. It’s amazing what great finale episodes do to your brain and emotions. It completely wiped out all my thoughts that he so didn’t deserve Xiaoxi.

        8
        1

He made an effort. He knew he can’t afford to lose her and went all out. It made me forgive him because he realized he did wrong. And he realized he had to fix it to get the girl. His efforts were sincere. You are right last episodes made us forget all the crappy things he did in between.

          4
          1

YES!!!!!!!!!! Omg Those moments after they broke up – he flew back to try the relationship again and get back with her! But He chickened out by what he saw 💔

He also would give her a ring for no reason other than he missed her so much, but couldn’t say that out loud. Xiaoxi, lovely and amazing girl she is, wouldn’t put up with his mixed signals and was like “I’m changing my number, so you don’t call me by mistake” like omg 😭😭😭😭

When he officially went back home, he was a complete different man with a mission to get her back – I was weak. Not to forget to mention how he took all the trash out of his trunk into his back seat just to make sure she sits next to him in his car! Lol. Argh. Siigh too many beautiful moments to mention😔😔

You finished it! I was just thinking about you last evening if you finished binging 🙂

That last episode from his point of view was everything to me.

Such a lovely little gem. I was so angry with him during the break up but then when I see how much he needed her i couldn’t be angry anymore. She was his northern star.

Yeeeep! I did 😭 I started writing this looong essay and making gifts as soon as I finished it and was wide awake at 3am posting all this lmao 😂 What is sleep anyways! That word is so foreign to me.

When you said the ending made up for its angsty, I wholeheartedly agree! We honestly need more dramas like this where we can get both sides of how things played out. It felt so complete to see that ending.

That GIF!! That scene where he hold her chin while she dozed off.
And that other scene when she falls down after tripping – he gently picks her up and takes her home. Even though he doesn’t show much affections his actions were so gentle.

      3
      1

Auuuughh!!!! They were sooooo many gif-worthy moments in this drama it hurt to choose! He was gentle the way he caught her head, like I cannot! 😵There was this moment too during that time when she misplaced the money, how she cutely poked his arm asking him to help out. He shut his eyes and gave in – I mean how many times has this happened in the course of their lives that she seemed so comfortable in asking him for help?

        3
        1

They both had a connection. He always knew what she needed. He knew what upsets her. He knew her quirks. I never had second lead syndrome. Not once.
Another scene which totally gave me the feels was the window cleaning scene. The way he lifted her and put her down and made a cleaning stick for her. All that in no time and so gently. No fuss. Just quietly he cared.
When I watched last year I was in the same state. Searching for all possible write ups on this drama. I enjoyed fangirlverdicts review.
This drama will always have a special place in my heart.

Thanks for that – will check fangirlverdicts review tonight! This weekend will obviously be all about rewatching A Love So Beautiful, watching tons of fanmade MVs, and digging around Google one more time for decent (by decent I meant essay/novel like) reviews lol.

Omg!!! Yes!!! That window cleaning scene is so gold. Thanks for mentioning that. When Lu Yang told her to stand on that table instead cuz she’s not a girl anyway! 😤 His antenna is all up watching her next moves. He is always gentle handling/protecting her, I wish that also reflected on how he talked to her. Speaking of eavesdropping! Let’s go back to ep 1 when Lu Yang told them that they should make a group together and name it – Jiang Chen mentioned that same group name Lu Yang told Xiaoxi and Lu Yang was like – wow you’re listening in, nice to know you know about me yada yada yada. Little did he know, it was all because he was talking to Xiaoxi!!! Gaaaah!

I second fangirlverdict.com’s review. She’s the one that convinced me to watch this. Then there was @modernflapper’s tumblr gifs and videos on vimeo. See if she still has them on her wall. She’s not been active for a while. I hope she’s ok.

In Episode 23, he implicitly called her his miracle and destiny because the world is no where near the size of her bathroom, he cannot just randomly meet someone who happened to be living in the same building and went through all that childhood years with him. He is destined to meet and fall for her; that it’s a miracle he’s finally found that somebody who never leaves him no matter what happened.

I really disliked that part when they had to break up over petty misunderstandings that could have been easily resolved had he owned up and said whatever he was bottling in. But after seeing his point of view, I completely appreciated their fight, and I couldn’t have wished for a better angsty break up. He got way too comfortable thinking his “constant” would forever remain by his side no matter what he did, no matter what he said. Xiaoxi called him out on this that he cannot always assume she knows what he is thinking; she is not a mind reader, though what a great talent that would have been if we could. He needs to treat her better and make her feel a priority if she really is one in his life. Not just someone he will remember when he’s not tied up anymore. He took his “constant” for granted.

Three years later, he grew up, learned from his mistakes, and the next time he ran into her, he made sure he never made the same mistake twice. No matter how busy he is at work, he takes time off to be by her side and commits into the relationship more. It’s so adorable that he did the most un-Jiang Chen things just to win her back – I mean really, show off your fake girlfriend? LOL (Though whoever advised him that was proper needs to be kicked in the shin *eyeing at you Ms. Surgeon*)

Indeed hot!😍 but I’m glad the series did imply that they did it – gah that last episode was just the best. All I did was just smile, grin, and try to read them subtitles.

I don’t really have much anything to say about my girl Xiaoxi, and that is not a bad thing – I loved her from day 1. She knows what she likes, and she works hard to get it. She fell for him when he was helping a boy to pay for his stuff. She says she didn’t need anymore reasons than that, it just is. And I completely agree. I also love the positivity and brightness she brings to Jiang Chen. She is a perfect match for him. When she felt that she was receiving the short end of the stick in her relationship with Jiang Chen, she ended things with him fast even though it broke her into many pieces. She knows her worth and won’t settle as a second priority in his life. Now that I think of it, I think I would agree when Jiang Chen says that he loves and needs Xiaoxi more than she does him. He was miserable for three years, lost his equilibrium, and all that was left for him was memories of her.

Overall, A Love So Beautiful is another series that has now a special place in my heart. I`m glad it didn’t bring me a rollercoaster ride of emotions (I honestly need to take a break from this). Rather it gave me a nice nostalgia show, and I am grinning so much to see everything falls in its place for the five individuals I ended up caring for so much. I am missing all of them, and a day has only passed TT____TT

They were amazing! This is my second Shen Yue drama, and I look forward to many more dramas she will star in and take me by surprise again by how much I enjoy watching her play her character! And of course I can never forget to mention the rest of the gang – I love all five of them. I couldn’t have asked for a better cast. 😌

This such an amazing essay. *cries* When I was younger, I used to love stories like this. Manga, drama, movie, animation, book, whatever. I adored this love story. Reading your essay reminds me of what I once was like, and how I wish I could be like that again.

*excuse me while I cry in a corner – this was a very lovely essay. I think at one point, I’d have adored this drama.*

Thank you very much forreading my entire essay!! ☺️ I get very sentimental over high school stories and how innocent and youthful they are, but I think this drama completely wrecked me (in a great way) when I got to this part. Them five kids grew up, went into the real world, and now they’re at the age where they get married and create their own family. 😭😭 I recently just got engaged too to my longtime boyfriend, so this drama had my emotions all over the place much more. I watch it and I keep remembering how it was like when we first knew each other, then started dating, had those fair share of petty fights, to right to this moment. 😭 it’s very rare to find a drama that connects you on so many levels – A love so beautiful did that to me.

OMG Congratulations!! On your engagement. 😊😊😊🎂 I guess also this drama is perfectly suited to your mood & feelings at the moment. It’s amazing how sometimes reel life can move us in this manner. *hugs* Wish you & your hubby-to-be a long and happy life together! 😊

Just finished Chap 4 😐😐 The novel does bring back the feel of the drama that I do love…. except with how chap 4 ended! Why Jiang Chen! What do you mean “introduce me to a girlfriend” “someone taller and skinner than do will do”!!!!! 😡😡 thank goodness they didn’t make Jiang Chen like this guy in the drama. It’s like he never changed at all in the novel. Still reading, just thought I’d drop by and vent my little anger at Jiang Chen novel version. Huehehe.

Hahahaha. You were not the only one who hated jiang chen in that stage. But keep reading, you’ll soon fall in love with him. 😁

Chap 35 now. I still don’t forgive Jiang Chen for being such a tsundere, but 😍☺️😍☺️😍 I had to pause reading and take a break because he’s so naughty I cannot 😵 it’s hard to continue reading lol. His hormones are just raging bad I had to stop to try and get my sanity back😅

A few chapters back he asked Xiaoxi to move in with him, but she said no. He respected that. Now, he’s got his suitcase with his clothes, asked Xiaoxi to make room in her closet for his clothes – fml Jiang Chen, so smooth boi if girlfriend isn’t moving in with him, he’ll move in with her instead 😂😂😂 Xiaoxi doesn’t even notice how smooth this is ahhhhh~ seriously. This novel focuses more on the aftermath of getting back together – why didn’t we have a season 2? 😭😭 the novel spells season 2 all over it.

          1

Gahhh, Jiang Chen is so thirsty and yes, very smooth and very persistent. Hahaha. He finally got the his chance to get xiao xi back and he wouldnt let go!

Im glad you are enjoying the novel. And i always frecommend to watch the web drama first and then the book. Because it fits perfectly as the 2nd part of the drama!

            So, happy reading!! 😍

Just finished reading ☺️ This series is simply beautiful and amazing, I fall for it more and more. Both novel and drama are written so well, it hurts to read and watch. Thank you so much @pinklolipop for linking me the novel – so heartwarming, I fall for Jiang Chen and Xiaoxi more. Their relationship is so mundane, and that makes it so relatable. The chapters have no grand plots, but still manage to move you because it connects you so well with the couple, what makes them happy, what makes them anxious.

I will keep visiting the website from time to time as it is still currently in the works – I read the translator said there’s still 8 chapters before we can close the books. I really appreciated the side stories as we get to see both POVs. So nice to see that the high school plots finally made their way on paper – after chap 50, I honestly thought that their high school plot was majority a drama work. It was so nice reading it while imagining the exact events that happened in the drama. Thank you once again! 🥰

I haven’t read your essay yet. But this show made me write one too! Ok, off to read yours. I know you had good taste, but this confirms it! It’s my favorite c-drama ever and I’ve seen a few (growing up, dubbed in Vietnamese, was not impressed).

Huehehehehhe, throw me a good flick my way, and I’ll be happy camping in my room again and binge watch!😅

I’ve only seen two C-dramas so I’ve got really nothing to compare, but overall this is def one of my top faves!

I couldn’t stop smiling whilst reading your essay, you captured everything I love about the show.
I agree, I feel that Jiang Chen needed/cared for her so much more, because of his family situation and how they had essentially neglected him. The only person to really care is xiaoxi and he took that for granted.
I’m glad he came back ready to put her first ahead of everything.

Thank you for reading!!! I didn’t think I would love this drama so much. When I started this on Saturday, I thought it was cute and fluff, something to watch now that I’ve dropped another K-drama. Then episodes went by, it got more serious, I became emotionally invested in not just Xiaoxi and Jiang Chen’s love story, but also Lu Yang and Jing Xiao’s, and Bu Song’s finding his own self worth amidst pursuing his sports career. I couldn’t stop watching and I’m just glad that it ended in such a way I couldn’t have asked for a better ending. I mean I’m even totally fine that i didn’t get to see their wedding – I thought that ending with them holding hands on the street gave such peace in me – that they’ll be fine and they’re so in it for the long haul ☺️

Late in the game, but I just started #ALoveSoBeautiful this weekend, and it is sooooooo good?

Here comes another night of binging TT____TT Thank you, @february for recommending this to me http://www.dramabeans.com/members/13infamyss/activity/664501/#acomment-664711 ^_____^

I watched it after February’s recommendation too! It’s so cute!!! You’ve tempted me to watch it again!

Huehehe February’s out and about the influencing us on our drama choices! 😃 Ep 11 in and then still liking it! I cheated and watched some fanmade MVs on YT and omg their adult years look so cute too, and I can’t wait to get to that part! Though I know for sure I’ll be sad once their high school is over. I always get sentimental on high school plots – something about its innocence and youth that pale in comparison with uni and working adults life plots.

      2
      2

Yes, exactly! It made me long to back to high school, I don’t think I realised at the time how much I would miss it. Although I would prefer to go back to the high school shown in dramas than my own lol.

It gets so much cuter once the two leads are adults. I think I know what I’m going to do after work tonight 😉😁

Hahaha that is true. I don’t want to go back to my own high school either, but I get so soft watching and reading high school plots. It’s ironic how in our own high school, we couldn’t wait until we are adults and do the things whatever and however we want, but the. I watch these dramas now and be like, stop growing up so fast! 😭

          2
          0

yes! there is something so innocent about high school plots that I root harder for these kids.
There aren’t may dramas based in college/universities right. They jump from high school to workplace.
I like the uni period a lot (my ID gang comes to mind).

        3
        1

Yep! I think it’s the fact that whatever they are going through, it was something we went through as well – crushes, bestfriends, dreaming and planning of whatever you want to be when you grow up, that high school anxiety of uncertain future. Also that boundary of you’re not a girl/boy, but you’re not an adult either! I always come back to stories like this.😌

So true, even reply 1997 and 1988 jumped from high school to working adults. Off the top of my head, aside from My ID is Gangnam Beauty, I can only think of Reply 1994 and Cheese in the Trap that had uni plots. Although I got to admit the friendship that formed in Reply 1994 didn’t really move me as much as it did with 1997 and 1988. My ID is Gangnam Beauty uni relationship was exceptional – the gang will always have a special place in my heart ♥️ Also how Mirae found new friendship with unni and Jung Boon!

          2
          1

Yes, the friendships in A love so beautiful and my id is gangnam beauty were brilliant, I couldn’t stop smiling seeing the trio together!

What did you think of it! This is my 2nd C-drama after Meteor Garden 2018, and omg I don’t know how to love Shen Yue more. Shes just so adorable, and my heart is there with her every single time. When she smiles, the world looks a lot brighter. 😎😎

It’s cute so far! CDramas just seem to suck me in and I don’t know how. This is my third Cdrama and I’ll probably end up gushing about it like I did the other two at some point too haha.

        2
        1

I feel like cdramas are so good at portraying high school life and the innocence of that time. There is just something heartwarming about these first love, friendships stories.
I was gushing after the show ended, I think I played the soundtrack for days!

          2
          0

Nice. I really enjoyed watching this one. Just a sweet drama.

    2
    1

Awesome! Glad to know it didn’t lose its spark to the end – something that’s quite common among the dramas lately. I’m half way through the series (sucks that sleep and work had to interfere 😑) and still liking it! All I want to know is how Jiang Chen fell for Xiaoxi. Hope they’ll tell me somewhere in the episodes. His budding crush on her is just so adorable, he makes me squeal at times. The other times, I want to smack him for not taking that leap and fess up to her. 🤓 It breaks me whenever he gets riled up at her because he’s jealous, but she doesn’t know that because he doesn’t tell her! Accck! Oh youth and tsundere boys~~

      3
      1

ha ha.. You will definitely want to smack him harder in future episodes. But somehow the last episode sealed it for me. Will wait to hear from you once you finish.
Unlike the usual tsundere boys, with him I understand that he has been growing up by himself for most parts. Explains his lack of ability to bond with others and make friends. Because of this I don’t feel angry at his behavior.
She is just so awesome with her crush. And the girl friendship. This show was so full of heart ; )

        3
        1

Ohhhhh! Yes I love them girlfriends, their friendship is just so genuine. I love that she attacks head on and Xiaoxi keeps her grounded. They’ve got such a great dynamic.

And oh no, guess I have to get myself prepped now for some nasty angst!🥺 Yes, he is not a people person and that’s why he bottles everything in and doesn’t really know how to express himself. I forgive him too for being so Jiang Chen-bot! He is happy in his little corner at the sight of her and that alone is enough for him. Totally loved those parts when he would steal a glance at her and smile after. That episode when she is crying on the street after finding out her parent might really get divorce – he catches up to her excitedly then pretends like he just happens to be walking with her at the same time. Like! Why are you such a boy!☺️ And then that debate competition episode – she dozes off as the group talk about their plan, and he just doesn’t stop stealing glances at her! It hurts seeing how little things like this make him happy that it makes me wish he stops being tsudere!

          2
          0

Aww it is wonderful!!! A bit slow but you will ease into the pace soon enough! Happy watching!

    4
    1

Yup, there were some slow parts, but I didn’t mind. I was sold when I saw ep 1’s epilogue. I was like, yep I’m falling for another tsundered guy, then! 🙃 but what makes it more interesting is that he likes her already before I even warmed up to the characters, like……!

And thanks! ♥️ So bummed it’s time to go to work again – counting down now till it’s time to go home and binge!

            0

@13infamyss, I’m trying to finish this show at the moment, I’m battling through the angst-filled period. I suppose it feels lengthy because the writer has been setting it up for the viewer to see how love just isn’t enough to overcome the obstacles in their life.
I’m hoping the two leads will find a way in the end, it’s about 30 episodes in total and on YouTube.

            1

        1

Absolutely! Will probably be posting more gifs that I find adorable a long the way! 😃

BTW do you know by chance a website that recaps this series? I found 3 on google but it stopped at ep 4 😨 would like to read some thoughts/reviews on this series each episode just to make sure I didn’t miss anything to spazz on.

          0
          2

No I couldn’t find recaps at all, such a shame because I feel like there were little signs that xiang chen did to show he cared for her.
I remember beanies discussing it in detail on the what we are watching this week thread last year.

@ayaan thanks for info yes that is really a shame no website recapped this.

And thanks for the heads up on that discussion on what we are watching. That might be a little hard to do backlogging now, but I’ll check those threads out when time allows me to🙃

😍😍 I fall for this series more. Ep 20 in and I’m so… emotionally invested in Xiaoxi and Jiang Chen’s story of first love. They wreck me with their petty fight and misunderstandings, but that makes me love them more – if that make sense? 😌

Thank you once again. Almost end of March, and I still haven’t got over this beautiful series 😔 I also managed to read the book (up to whatever it is latest translated, short story chap 9) in one go.

      1
      1

I find myself watching little clips when I’ve had a bad day. I need to read the novel too at some point!

Once my shows finish next week, I think I will try when we were young next 🙂

        1
        1

Haven’t had the chance to start on We Were Young yet. I kept going back to A Love So Beautiful 😭😭 Like you, I watch little bits of it. Didn’t help that when I read a scene from the novel, I rewatch the same exact scene from the drama 😂😂

The novel emphasizes more on the aftermath of their 3 year break up, how they made up, and what went on when they got back together. Not so much on the high school stuff and its presence was certainly missed! But the content of the novel is perfect for A Love So Beautiful Season 2 lol. I hated Jiang Chen so much more in the novel but once again, fell for him hard later in the story 😍😍 if you don’t mind me sharing a cute spoiler that I totally fangirled for –

          Spoiler

Jiang Chen asked her to move in with him. She hesitated, he got the hint right off the bad that she wasn’t ready, so he respected that. Few chapters later, we see Jiang Chen subtly leaving his stuff behind here and there at Xiao Xi’s apartment, and he ended up taking a space of her closet!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😱 If she’s not moving in with him, he will move in with her cuz boi cannot live without his girl so bad 😭😭😭😭

          *End of spoiler*

          1
          1

I feel like I would be doing the exact same thing, I need to read that novel this weekend!

That is adorable! I feel like jiang chen would use any trick in the book to show how much he cares for xiao xi! That scene reminds me of the episode that Jiang chen moved all of those things from the boot into the car, just so xiao xi would sit next to him.

            1
            0

Just saw #Radiant first 2 episodes….

It’s heavy and depressing? It definitely gives off My Ahjusshi vibes. Watching that car accident happen over again didn’t sit with me well. It’s good though

Happy Valentines! 😍 Don’t forget to fall in love with yourself first.

It’s very fitting that I happened to watch this webdrama yesterday that reminded me how much self love is so important. They’ve been going out since high school, but she always feels insecure whenever they are together despite his numerous validations that she’s the one he loves and needs. She can’t help comparing herself with others. She says he could have had someone better, prettier than her. But all this time, he sees nobody as beautiful and much deserving to love than her. She is perfect in his eyes. She fails to see that. Season 1 ended with them breaking up, and I, surprisingly, couldn’t be more satisfied with that. Please love yourself first before giving your heart to somebody

Be with someone who makes you happy.

Seeing the teaser for #ThatPsychometricGuy and missing #SKYCastle made check out A-Teen MV again. (note: female lead in the former and one twin in the latter starred in this series)

I didn’t go crazy over A-Teen, and I honestly prefer Seventeen among the trilogy teen series, but this was still a good watch. I was bummed at first that the OTP I was rooting for wasn’t really the end game, but I got over it fast. I just cannot not like him when he is soooo into her. And great OST too!

PS. I hope #ThatPsychometricGuy is good. It looks promising from teaser vids.

I dropped it after ep 2, just didn’t feel like it. So I missed all the second leads romance fun part, what a pity. Then I watched them all in YT, someone left a comment in one of the vids I watched that they have little scenes each episodes and clips I saw are pretty much it, so I’ll just watch them on YT from time to time. Finished watching them clips yesterday – sooooo adorable

      1

yes, I heard the same thing… That if you were only interested in their pairing, you wouldn’t get much. I also wasn’t into watching the drama (I dropped it after the first episode) but I did see, I believe, most scenes with them together. They definitely have to do something together again! But this time, a bigger focus and more story on their pairing!! Not little tease snippets!

And it’s ended. Siiiiiiiiiigh.

I will miss the SKY Castle residents a lot. I didn’t think that I’d end up loving all the families in this drama, but I did. I thought the ending was a bit too dreamy (unrealistic if I dare say) for me that all families got out of the twisted, toxic life they’re living in pretty well. Then again, I think I’d be heartbroken if one of them ended up being broken and alone. So I guess I`ll take the HEA endings over a more realistic ending – who watches K-Drama for its realism anyway? ^__^

Overall, it was a solid, great drama with amazing actors despite how much it spelled over the top family drama plot from its get go. It deserved all the love, recognition, and hype.

Now back to watching chick flicks~~~~~~~

Legit. What would Prof Cha do to get Yeh Suh as his daughter-in-law? LOLOL. She’s perfect in his eyes even if she’s a high school dropout. #SKYCastle

#SKYCastle Ep 20

Some things don’t change – Ki Joon pushing all the buttons, Yeh Suh with her short temper, Suh Joon being Switzerland.

I thought it was nice of Suh Joon to ask Yeh Suh to come join them. He said he knew she would say no, but he’d ask her anyways……… Thinking back, he was nice to her from the start even though she didn’t deserve it.

#SKY Castle More onions being cut up…….

😭😭 😭😭 😭😭

Definitely the highlight of this episode. You cannot not 😭😭 in this scene. It was so, so poignant.

I said I wanted to see her demise, but I guess for SKY Castle that was too much. I didn’t think I’d be breaking my heart to see her in this state.

14
4

When she put the pills in the food I was scared. I did NOT want the show to go there. It would have been beyond cheap. I’m glad my faith was so quickly restored!

    5
    1

Right, I was actually shaking my head as the scene was played out. I was like wow there’s really no remorse for her. Also going back to that first scene she went to check up on sleeping Kay, and then she turned into a 10 yr old kid again in her eyes, I was smh too that she really can’t accept what happened to her daughter, that she still goes back to that time she was young and “normal”. But then this scene happened TT_______TT She faced her and she never hallucinated Kay’s physical features, and then she told her it’s okay you don’t have to study. Gaaah~ And the way she tried everything to stop her from eating that curry, like TT______TT siigh. I`m still a mess.

And that ending tho? SKY Castle doesn’t know to stop with all this cliffhangers ~___~

I’m usually very forgiving, very open-minded in real life but for some reason, I get eerily twisted when it comes to dramas, movies.. the likes. That’s why I was kinda rooting she actually went through with it. I love gory, and incredibly twisted things in dramas not real life (that’s why Young-Jae’s mother’s suicide sealed the deal for me.. I know how messed up that sounds)
But when she didn’t go through with it, I wasn’t as disappointed as I thought I’d be.
I was going to ask if you’d seen the new episode. I didn’t expect Suh Jin to come clean, I was under the impression she’d gone too far in. Even to the end, her husband didn’t do anything substantial- making excuses as he begged for forgiveness.
Admist everything, I quickly remembered something. Why is Suh Jin making it seem like the whole ordeal with Woo-Jin was because of the exam papers. Did everyone forget she and Coach Kim had already somewhat agreed Woo-Jin would take the fall even before she confirmed Ye-Suh didn’t do it? I was a little happy she came clean and stopped hating her a little bit till I finally remembered. Her confrontation with Coach Kim kinda showed she hasn’t fully realized just how responsible she is for everything. And why wasn’t she detained? She was an accomplice in framing Woo-Jin. She planned it with Coach Kim.
Prof. Cha – I didn’t think it wasn’t possible for me to feel bad for him. He was one of my least favorites even though he served as comic relief most times. His sons blatantly telling him to ‘fuck off’ – please, pardon my Korean – must have been a cold slap to the face. I really hope his wife divorces him but I also hope he finds a way to make amends for his years of abuse to his kids.
Sky Castle has been a ride! I’m looking forward to the finale.

    5
    1

I feel like had she gone through the suicide route, it would have been predictable and not fall in the SKY Castle’s standards. We know the kind of person she is – she is not one to admit a mistake and she always has Plan B. She will never allow her see her life go down hence the suicide route as the last resort. Seeing and talking to her daughter made her weak. She said sorry and admitted to her mistake for the first time. This ambitious, perfectionist woman finally asked her daughter to stop trying. It’s so poignant that Kay brain can only remember that she needs to study. That she’s writing up those calculations not because she’s still a genius, but that it’s to please her mom to this day, a decade later. Now, that was a very gripping, a better revelation, and it definitely fall in this drama’s standards. She really can’t kill off herself and her kid after that. That was her demise. That at the end of the day, she is a mother who loves her kid. She puts her daughter’s protection above all, before herself.

Yep, I agree although I was “slightly” moved when Kang went to see her at the police station. Cuz honestly I just wanted to see somebody hug and tell Soo Jin she did great, and he happened to be there, so somehow that scene made me teared up too. But yeah, Soo Jin did everything on her own and I was there with her dreading that trip to the police station. And he was no help until everything was said and done. I still don’t like him to this day, but I guess I’ll put up with the fact that at least he didn’t abandon his family.

Right, yes, now that you’ve mentioned it. That fact was never addressed. Soo Jin was in on the plan to blame it all on Woo Joo. And she did get rid of evidences – Hye Na’s personal digital belongings. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 Now it makes me more curious of how finale is going to end. Whether this will be a plot hole or there’s a reason for it. I still have a feeling Soo Jin’s arc won’t be getting wrapped up too nicely. She’s the main character after all. Hers would have to be the most gripping. 🤨

Prof Cha – I was indifferent to him this episode. I didn’t even find him funny at all. I was too busy bawling my eyes for the ladies in this episode that his scenes didn’t stick to me. And when he ended up wiping, the noddles he threw, off the pyramid – yep he’s a lost cause. I honestly can’t see how he will suddenly have a change of heart by in the finale. It would be kind of unrealistic. Sad to admit cuz I loved the Cha family together (for all the fun they brought, shallow I know) but yeah you’re right they’re better off going separate ways.

#SKYCastle Ep 19. I`m cutting up onions while watching….

She really did! 😭 Her face keeps breaking everytime her mom lists the repercussions of her decision, but she stands by it and told her mom she can do it. And when she confronted her grandma “why on earth it’s a must to get into SNU med school” like guuuuuurl 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 sometimes you just need to take that leap, it will be a hard leap, but once you did, you’ll think back to that time and be like “was it really that hard to let it go?” Yeh Suh girl just did that.
