Augh Jin Yu 😭😭 #TheMissingHalf

This drama is really mediocre at best. And the constant flashbacks which probably take up half each episode drive me nuts, but I do not abandon incredibly nice male leads. So here I am watching until Jin Yu gets his deserved credit.

lolz this plot twist. #TheMissingHalf My heart breaks that he is misunderstanding this, but I’m cracking up at how absurd this scene is.

I don’t think the husband knows the nature of their relationship still in the present time. Su Yan has too many things she’s bottling in. She frustrates me so much, but at the same time, she does have a lot of emotional baggage she can’t just freely load off to someone, even to the man who cared for her the most. She’s been alone in her battles and this episode showed that she’s just not ready yet to be with him at that time. She needs time to sort out her personal issues first.

But, okay I’m glad he cleared up the misunderstanding. Look at his sigh of relief LOL. Oh, Jin Yu. Jiayou! 👊

This now makes me wonder how she ended up marrying him when it’s clear she still has a lot of unresolved feelings from the past that she hasn’t shared with her husband in the present time. I hope she didn’t force herself to marry him :-/ It’s not fair for her and for Jin Yu too.

Now, I want to watch only the scene in the first gif to see what made the guy do that, lol…

Lol he just tripped over the mess he actually created himself! 😅 and everything became so awkward after that it was so funny.

Is this good? I’ve suddenly fallen out of love with every single one of my dramas, not that I have that many to start with.

@outofthisworld Ack!!!!! Sorry, E. I did not see your comment until now! I’m not sure how this was missed in my notification.

Anyways, I am still watching this Taiwanese show. Ep 23 and 24 English subs came out today. But it’s finished now, 28 episodes in total. I will say the premise was interesting. The female lead got into a car accident, is in coma more than half of the series. We return back to the many times she was very reserved and couldn’t freely express her feelings well to the five people who were dear to her and that included her husband.

Before she got into an accident, she wrote password-protected emails to them telling them her feelings. Her connection to these 5 people interested me the most. The plot twist between her and the second lead (the gifs I have posted) was what I appreciated the most. I honestly thought he was romantically in love with her, but nope, he follows her around and I guess “terrorizes” her for a whole different reason. I’m glad that he’s not into that way. I have no patience in watching love triangles in dramas lately. I want to watch shows that focus on real OTP’s growth from day 1 without the annoying love triangles/square….

This show has melo theme to it, so it’s very melancholic and slow burn especially whenever we take a look back on female lead’s past.

The insane amount of flashbacks drove me nuts which really took the fun out of watching this series. I would not recommend watching it on YouTube because opening, ending songs and music inserts in the scenes are muted due to copyrights. 😪 https://bowan.su/eps/86911-2-1.html Here is where I rewatch the muted scenes. I like the opening song so much. I`m not sure, but I`m hoping Taiwanese-Chinese is something you understand as well? Just different accent?

The main draw for me here is the extremely nice male lead from day 1. Throw them leads over my way, I’m beyond smitten. Now, he’s not Gu Wei Yi, but I still love her husband – he’s very patient with her, he’s always there for her even when she doesn’t show how much she appreciates his presence (she had to write this too in her email! And it made him smile, I’m a goner)

I`m bad a recommending dramas. This show has its fair share of frustrating bits, but I`m still watching. I would suggest to check out the first 5 episodes to get the feel of it. I`m not a fan of nonlinear narratives, so the bounce back between past and present, then the past having its own flashback of an earlier past, confused me at first. It was not until Episode 5 where I settled in and decided I`ll stick around…

Errr dammit, I cannot count. I meant “Her connection to these FOUR** people interested me the most.” She’s the 5th character, lol

          Hi Fams! I miss you!

Don’t worry about it. You know me…I even forgot that I asked this question. I am now deep in The Untamed – the world of beautiful long maned men with flowing robes and long limbs.

I’ve put many dramas on hiatus and given my record, it’s doubtful I will pick them up. Maybe if I don’t get suck into another C drama, I might.

          1

Same, E. Hope we find another drama again to spazz together!

I’ve been reading about your guys obsession with The Untamed! But alas, the amount of episodes this series has scare me away. Maybe one of these days I’ll check it out.

I`m watching a lot of K-dramas lately, but my obsession is no where near like I used to or with Go Go Squid/Put Your Head on My Shoulder level. I`m watching them just because….

Uhmmm… I’m not on the wrong ship, am I? 😕 #LoveAlarm

The angst was unnecessary IMO even if I find it cute that Sun Oh keeps ringing Jojo’s love alarm after all these years.

Where’s Season 2?!!! I want the cute back😭

9

    😪😪😪

Spoiled myself by looking up the the webtoon plot on twitter. My ship sank. Fml. I knew there was a reason why his name is right under Kim So Hyun. Sigh I don’t feel good.

    1
    2

I love Jojo but that breakup was so unnecessary. I’ve heard the webtoon is still ongoing so they better find a way to put this ship back together or there will be words.

      2
      1

Ahh! The webtoon it still ongoing?! But she’s dating the bestfriend in the current plot? Auugh, this is really bad. I really has this feeling that season 2 will focus on Hye Yeong since he pretty much didn’t do anything in the first season, but the actor’s name comes up after Kim So Hyun in the billing credits at the end. Auuugh. My poor heart. It’s broken too. 💔

I *think* I can see why she’ll move on, and how this breakup is taxing on her, but Sun Oh-bb 😭 He hasn’t been well since.

        1
        1

I have a feeling we’ll need more than 2 seasons to reach a proper resolution to this romance. My heart hurts from crying for Jojo and her past but then Sun-oh and the red scarf. Not fair drama.

          1
          1

Augh that scene was so painful. Yknow what, I actually warmed up to the idea of love alarm. It feels reassuring whenever Jojo’s love alarm goes off cuz that means he’s around. Also when he told her not to ever turn off her alarm cuz he wanted to show her that over time it would not go off. Augh! I dread that to happen next season, it better not! Anyways Four years later, Nothing’s changed!

When Jojo realized that it was actually him who rang her alarm in the crossword, and not Hye Yeong, eeepss! Sigh. 😪 too many things to talk about…

            0
            0

I’m so sadd. I spent the whole day yesterday on bingeing the drama, and now this. Imo jojo should be with sun oh considering how well he gets her. Anyway not watching the next season if she ends up with the other guy. :'(

      1
      1

Auuugh same! Went to bed past 3 in the morning feeling not so good after spoiling myself with webtoon events! I should have known, alarms (no pun intended 😀) should have be gone off in my head that dating and cute stuff at the beginning of the show spell trouble and lots of angst and frustrations! I’m def jumping to last episode of Season 2 to see if it’s HEA on my ship, otherwise, I cannot stand seeing Sun Oh’s heart get broken over and over again. This bb’s only fault is he fell hard for her really bad.

I think I heard my heart crack when he was lost in thoughts and then he asked his girlfriend if they can move back to the US. He’s trying hard to get over her, but that damn love alarm speaks truth of his feelings for four years.

I loved/broke too when he recalled hearing Jojo’s love alarm going off because he was around (the library scene)! His feelings are so much intact, it’s painful!!!! 😫😫

Huehehehehe You know me well, Blue! 😉😆 finished at 2am without fast forwarding, then looked up this drama on MDL and twitter for about an hour after, don’t remember shutting my eyes at all, but next thing I know I’m awake, feeling dead again, forcing myself out of bed to prep to work. Happy Friday! 😆😅

The drama overall is your typical kdrama highschool romance. Has got the same trope – bullying, misunderstanding, love triangle, dark past with awful family background. My interest dipped towards the end because of the usual kdrama angst, but whatever. I finished it! 😅 I’m gonna need a heavy dosage of Soo Bin and Jun Woo today to recover. I hope this week’s episodes will satisfy me.

#LoveAlarm Saw first episode without knowing what this drama was about, but what just happened? So he went after her because his man has a crush on her? Why is this rated mature? And why does Netflix not let me screencap????????!!!!! 😡😡

😪 10 more hours to go till I see episode 2…

Netflix had this series popped up this morning so I went ahead and checked it out!

Gahhhh!!! I didn’t know this was one of those series again that were split into many seasons 😵😵 no wonder it only had 8 episodes. I can’t wait to watch more!

Hope you’ll check this out and let me know what you think of the first episodes! I don’t know what I think of it yet, but I’m intrigued that they seemed to be like schoolmates with benefits? 😆 hard to tell what they really are by the end of episode 1 and which way does the male lead swing……..

I did not realize it was TVMA. So will definitely check it out. Wink 🙂

@mayhemf 😅 right! I was like where tf is the kiss. I really don’t get why this is mature. I watched netflix’s Mature shows and ep 1 was no where near it 🤦‍♀️

I checked a couple of kdramas that were marked as mature on Netflix – Something in the rain and Arthdal Chronicles. Heh.

            1
            0

I understand Arthdal – it had violence and gore with a lot of head slicing killing etc.
Something in the rain – hmmmm. Because of workplace harassment and stalking by ex bf? Kissing and bed scenes were not explicit. Weird.

            1
            0

Got home and checked the first episode. Ok, am not sure if their friendship is real or there is some hidden undercurrent.
Looks like he liked her because she stared at him? Or he likes her because his friend likes her.
I don’t get this love alarm. So bizarre 🙂
I like the fact that I don’t know who the male lead is. So I might watch one more episode to see if I want to continue.

        0
        3

I honestly thought they were a gay couple, no? Or maybe it’s Sun Ho who’s gay. He’s really possessive of Hye Yeong – demanding him to do this, do that; quit his job now that he’s back. I know Korean men are touchy to each other, but something about their relationship seems to be not pure platonic. I honestly thought the mom would freak out to see them in the same bed lol.

Anyways I don’t think he likes her. He wants to get her because Hye Yeong’s attention is on her.

I thought they knew each other. Turns out they didn’t since Jojo asked him if he knew her from somewhere

Yes, it’s pretty bizarre! I read what the plot is about on MDL and it’s so vague! It didn’t really capture what happened in the pilot episode. And the concept of love alarm isn’t exactly detailed either. I’ll see too how far I’ll stick around but I found ep 1 intriguing.

          1
          2

It never occurred to me!! But now that you tell me, may be.
I saw second episode and kinda like what I see.
I have a feeling this will turn dark soon.

@mayhemf thanks for the heads up! glad to know it’s kinda good. lol I am starting ep 2 now…

RE: dark – UH-OH. is that what “mature” is about….. hmf. I didn’t watch Arthdal, so I`m glad to know I didn’t cuz gory stuff aren’t my thing. I agree with you on Something in the Rain – perhaps the workplace/bf plot made it rated as mature. It’s kind of triggering in a sense.

Huehehhehehe omg I’m laughing so hard at my complete nonsense theory after finishing this show! My theory is no where near what happened and you are correct, It was really love at first sight for Sun Oh at the bus stop! Smh. I should have known kdramas can’t be that complex in touching on what they deemed taboo subjects. They’re simply just two bestfriends who fell for same girl. One was aggressive enough to make a move, while the other stayed in the background, pining. 😪

I am starting #RookieHistorianGooHaeRyung. While Saeguk dramas are not my cup of tea, I`m hoping I can add this into my Sageuk drama list which isn’t long to begin with.

Half an hour into Episode 1, it made me remember a K-netizen poll I read a while back – “If you could wear clothing from the past, which period would it be from?”

I gathered some Sageuk dresses from different eras. Let me know which one you guys prefer.

My vote goes to the Joseon era – not only beautiful and distinct, but the dresses look more comfortable to wear.

    4
    1

My vote is for Joseon. First because the sleeves don’t appear to cover the women’s hands as much, and like you I think they look more comforable. Though I like the look of the Goruryeo era too. For the men, a Goruryea warrior (see Gong Yoo in Goblin) wins.

      3
      1

Yes, that’s noteworthy on the sleeves in Joseon’s. I also notice that women have their hair tied back or braided during this time.

    They’re all so pretty!

    2
    1

Yes they all are! Shin Se Kyung’s hanbok was so pretty that it made me look up these traditional dresses of different times. I haven’t seen most of these dramas, but they’re nice to look at.

      2
      0

I hardly watch historical Hence had no idea about these! They all are so pretty to look at but I can’t imagine walking around with any of these 🙂
Even in rookie historian you can tell how much she has to lift up all the fabric to move quickly.
But the pastel color ones really looks nice.

    1
    1

Same! When I first read that poll, I was like – huh there are actually differences to the dresses?

I still can’t easily distinguish which dresses are from which time (I spot some difference tho), but I can def pinpoint if a Sageuk drama is from Joseon. They look not too overly decorated yet still very beautiful. I believe most of the dramas I saw are from Joseon too – Love in the Moonlight, The Moon Embraces the Sun…. (trying to rack my brain of Sageuk dramas I have seen and can only come up with these for now 🤣)

How does this compare with the Taiwanese version?

    0
    1

Unfortunately I won’t be able to tell. I haven’t seen the Taiwanese and Korean versions, but I like the quiet, serious tone of this Japanese drama so far. And the OTP looks really cute together.

      0
      0

#InTimeWithYou’s translation title in English is “I don’t love you yet”. I find it interesting that this title is a chant Ren tells to himself whenever he is conflicted with his feelings for his best friend, Yo.

It seems he’s harbouring feelings for her for years, but doesn’t want to admit it. He says “I don’t love you, yet” to remind himself that he is still fighting against his budding feelings; that he doesn’t want to cave in….yet.

Perhaps the reason is he’s scared of destroying what they have now especially if Yo only sees him as no more than a best friend. Yo, I believe, will take a while to realize that something has changed. She looks so hard for love, she misses the time she was happy because of love, but she’s always have it. Her best friend has always been with her through her ups and downs. She was never alone.

Friends-turned-lovers is my favourite trope, so it is so easy for me to get sucked into Ren and Yo’s world.

I need more episodes 😰I wish the original Taiwanese version was available on Viki.

3
11

I’m so glad someone else is watching this show! Friends to lovers is also my favorite trope and I love that the japanese version is doing a great job at portraying it well without making the ML look pathetic in his love for the FL. I somehow feel sympathy for him, more so than the Korean version… (I haven’t watched the Taiwanese version yet, do you think the Japanese version is doing the original justice?)

    2
    1

I haven’t seen both previous versions. Korean – I’m not a fan of Lee Jin Wook, so I avoid any dramas he’s in. Taiwanese – I stopped watching non-Korean dramas for years until I was hit by yet another K-drama slump just last year. And sadly, I can’t find anywhere to check out the Taiwanese version!

My favourite scene has got to be from ep 5 where he took the an hour and a half Shinkansen ride to see her and make sure she wasn’t alone crying her heart out in the middle of the night! Ack my heart. I totally gasped when he said “open the door”. 😆 and then it got a little bit dangerous when they drank too much. 🙊

I feel sorry for him because he’s trying not to fall too deep – he dated, but his exes couldn’t stand the fact that his best friend takes a priority before them to him. He just can’t help it. And he genuinely wants to be there for her as the best friend, but yeah that leaves a serious problem because both of them just don’t leave any space for somebody to get in between them. I find it funny and cute that they laugh at their inside jokes, but that is super annoying from a third wheeler’s perspective. I don’t blame Maki at all for being pissed whenever they “get” their talk and she’s just there trying to catch up with the conversation.

      2
      2

*sighs* they just have so much history between them so I get why his exes would be jealous of that… but I think that if a guy is really just friends with his girl friend, then he should “sacrifice” a bit more time for his girlfriend. Priorities.😂

        1
        1

but I think that if a guy is really just friends with his girl friend, then he should “sacrifice” a bit more time for his girlfriend. Priorities

Yes, I couldn’t agree with you more! And that mostly is the reason why no relationships has ever worked with Ren. Going back to ep 5 again, Maki was about to invite him to stay at her place when he got the call from Yo, and what did he do? Left Maki in the cold and rushed to get to his bestfriend’s side. 🤦‍♀️ Not good, Ren. Not good. And there was that bit where his sister talked to Ren about camping with girlfriend and best friend and how girlfriend ended up being the third wheeler. He retorted that camping has always been his thing with Yo – meaning nothing has to change even when there is a girlfriend in the picture. His heart just wasn’t in any of his relationships!

          2
          1

As much as I don’t like Maki, he is completely in the wrong. If he knows his relationships don’t work because of him he should never start one.
And it doesn’t help that Maki thinks she can arm twist him into marrying her.

The only thing that bothers me is that they often go back to the past And talk about ‘those days’. Nostalgia is good but is not a solid foundation for relationship.
May be an over thinking this.

    2
    2

Good point! If a relationship is only based on nostalgia, they’ll only look at their “past selves” whenever they fight and base each other’s reaction to whatever they’re arguing to it. ie. “you aren’t the same person blah blah blah”

      2
      1

It’s not just that but also that you are living in the illusion of a happy past. You just want to relive those moments.
I have been friends with a few for 25 years and we hardly talk about school or university. You just move on and do new current things together.

They do talk a whole lot about their past, Blue. While I don’t see that as an issue at the moment and actually find their dialogues interesting because those validate that their relationship goes way back, I agree with you that this could be a serious matter in the long run. I hope the drama would touch on what it’s like to date your best friend, the good and the bad. Ren’s sister believes that the they’re the end game no matter how many people they see, but it would be interesting to see what happens after they become the end game. Reply series didn’t really show us this unfortunately. They date their best friend towards the end of the series and it’s HEA. I think that was the same case for Fight My Way as well? (I forgot what the plot was like after they went out).

But let’s see how this plays out. I’m liking it so far. I don’t even find Yo’s struggle to get over her long time boyfriend annoying. Yet. I mean she didn’t get her closure and she did love that guy, so I understand her. Now that he’s back and wants to get back with her, I’m curious to see how Ren will act on this. His face falls every time her ex is brought up in the conversation, but he’s sulking a lot to himself! He needs to take Maki’s advice – that he has stop not doing anything -seriously. The ex doesn’t like him either because he was always in the way – just like how Maki felt for Yo.

I chose binge watching again over sleep 😑 #InTimeWithYou

This part was pretty funny. Her friend told her she met her husband at this temple and advised female lead to go there and pray. Perhaps she’ll meet her future husband there.

But she brought her male best friend with her to that temple! 😂😂 And they ended up taking wedding pictures on the way home.

So no, she didn’t run into any other guy, but she was at the temple with her “future husband”. So I guess, in a way, this temple does bring couples together. 🙃

Indeed! I need a second season. It was a stress-free watch— if you don’t take the plot to heart.

I am yet to watch the last episode but were Ai Qing and Wu Bai dating since the start? Their arc was never really explained.

Not dating per se. But last couple of episodes hinted that it might not be just a one sided feelings for Xiao Bai after all. It’s weird and cute how they throw each other looks like that in the last episode. It happened twice

      1
      1

Yes I finally saw the episode and realized that they weren’t dating but might have shown interest in each other in some way. I do think Hu Yitian was somewhat wasted in this show. His appearances were even less than the rest K&K boys.

        1
        3

I honestly think that he was only guest appearance here more than a second lead. He had more solo shots where we were led to think those were filmed with the group but not really.

          +++
Okay I was right. In this article dated before Go Go Squid aired, he was billed as a guest star

Hu Y Tian is stated as a guest star, and Grandpa is stated as a special appearance/ cameo in the opening credits (but I guess no one would know that if you’ not Chinese and can’t read said opening credits 😅😅😅)

I agree. I thought when the drama was first announced and it was only going to be 20 some episodes long and only based on Stew Squid if they had planned a second drama starting Hu Yi Tian and focusing in the other 2 books in the series. Guess when the drama jumped to 41/44 episodes Hu Yi Tian might not have been available to expand his role. He is rarely in any of the group scenes other than as a head shot (I may rewatch in the future to see if they are just showing the same headshots). I think he was on site a lot less than implied by them just using these head shots.

Too bad the censorship did affect the last episodes, especially the ending.

    I didn’t get the last episode :
    – why did Nian Nian think the few minutes before an important competition were the right time to agree to get married / to ask him to get married?
    – I know some people are very analytical and take things literally. But why did he have to (1) ask her parents again for permission to get married, and (2) get their marriage license right away? Could it have waited another day? Could he have celebrated the championship with his kids first, get a good nap sleep, shower and get into a clean and fresh clothes?

The headphones were distracting (probably a PPL) in the ending scenes. I wanted to see the little cat one more time. I guess Nian Nian hasn’t found out her bracelet costs $$$, and I’m not sure Gun had repaid Xiao Bai. I wanted to see more of the Xiao Bai and Appledog relationship (but now understand why they couldn’t show it).

But I did enjoy the show for the fluff. Going to miss Gun, Nian Nian, and the whole K&K gang.

    1
    1

I’m just gonna assume that all these were done in the heat of the moment. It was the same thing that happened in the novel – she blurt out wanting to get married during the championship and Gun told her they’d register right after the game.

Why did he have to (1) ask her parents again for permission to get married,

I think it’s more of asking for their blessing than asking for permission.

And LOL nope, that money was a donation 😂 but Xiao Bai looks happy with the end result, so I guess that’s that.

Really a bummer with the censorship, and I guess to make up for the loss time, they needed to include a whole bunch of flashback so the last two episodes still fit the 45min show.

More sugar rush!!! #GoGoSquid

Nian Nian brings the best in Shangyan. I had wished for a day to come that he could bring out of the best in her too. She’s super smart, talented, popular, and easily draws people in. Her only weakness all this time was Shangyan. I’m so glad that Episodes 38 talked about her weakness and how he encouraged her not to walk on eggshells around him and to be more vocal with him. Looking forward to see how she turns Shangyan as her strength! More rainbow and sunshine ahead! 🌈 ☀️ 🌈 ☀️

    Love these gifs, @13infamyss!
I do love that even though Gun has such an alpha style most of the time, he does appreciate the beautiful and intelligent woman Squid is and wants the relationship dynamic to be more balanced. 😍

    1
    1

Yes Kimbap! And you can tell right off the bat that he respects her and never looks down on her even before he got to know her better.

I was rewatching earlier episodes for nth time last night cuz viki had the subs up for the latest episode so late into the night 😩. Anyways, although I had noticed it before that he was nice to her even when he first rejected her in Guangzhou, this time around I noticed that he’s not this nice to everyone. He was a complete a.hole to her cousin during he matchmaking and it was most likely because she was annoying af. He told her straight to her face that he didn’t like her and to leave him alone. With Nian Nian, there was never a time he berated her. In Guangzhou, as a stranger to Gun, he fed her, walked her to the vehicle that would take her back to her hotel. When he rejected her, he made it clear that it wasn’t particular her, just that he’s not into relationships right now.

      1
      1

Sorry would like to add, the cousin was most likely annoying af to him and she was very condescending which made Gun shut her down in a very rude way.

        1
        1

I did notice that Gun has never acted nicer toward Squid than he would for other people, and I was secretly hoping for a twist that he actually had fallen in love with her much earlier than we realized. So I was clutching my heart when he made that speech to her parents about how he noticed her before that fateful night but at last, it was a lie told to appease them. 😔 Wouldn’t it be awesome though if he got off the bus purposefully to see her that night knowing that she was working the night shift?

          1
          1

When I read his version of their story in the novel, it was so detailed, I fell for his lie. That’s why I was cringing hard when I watched this happened in the drama. I didn’t want to fall for it again.

But one thing’s for sure – she left an impression on Gun that he remembers her so much from that time they first met – the image he drew of her was what she was like at the cafe, he corrected her of the exact duration of when they first met, he recognized who she was right away on their second meet…..

Yay Katrina. Hope you’ll finish it soon. Yes they are absolutely the sweetest. I got too many sugar intake from watching them together post-2nd breakup and mind you they didn’t even do the typical drama date scenes. They can just stand next to each other and I’m swooning lol.

I cant explain why they appeal so strongly. I’ve noticed that most couples that I root for the hardest are the ones that are completely unswayed by other people- the second leads the annoying fans… In dramas I tend to dislike the misunderstandings that come from one of the leads not definitively shutting down people of the opposite sex trying to get with them. It is so satisfying watching him(or any Male lead) completely ignoring or rebuffing any other woman standing in between him and his woman.

I’m not even at this episode yet, but it brings me so much happiness to see that Tong Nian is bringing GUN so much happiness, and now, I can continue to watch and not have to worry about anything—not that I was going to stop watching this drama in the first place lol 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

I know that there is some idiocy somewhere along the road in upcoming episodes for me, but meh, what drama DOESN’T have some sort of idiocy written into it? None lol And I’m not even going to call it ‘noble’ idiocy, because it’s not going to be ‘noble ‘, it never is 🙄 It’s just plain idiocy 🤷🏻‍♀️

    1
    1

It will be tough battle for sure before we get to where we currently are in the series. I’m not a fan of the writing and there are many things I have issues with this drama, but with little we can work with, I’m glad that somehow, the issues that I have are being brought up and seriously discussed.

And I’m not even going to call it ‘noble’ idiocy, because it’s not going to be ‘noble ‘, it never is 🙄 It’s just plain idiocy 🤷🏻‍♀️

But… But he is God Gun! He is of the highest noble class (other-God-worldly class) that went through a severe idiocy stage. 😂

I think what hurt the most for me during Gun’s idiocy was that I fell for Nian Nian hard too. I realized what a great character she was except for when she’s with Gun. As much as I love them together, Nian Nian didn’t grow as a character with Gun. She becomes extremely weak and “stupid” whenever she is around Gun. He hurt her when she didn’t deserve any of it, but she ended up apologizing to him. She was stringing along Gun’s moods and when Gun he decided to fight for their relationship, they got back together just like that. I wish she made it a little harder to Gun, but I guess that’s what she is. She doesn’t hold grudges, she forgives and forgets even when the other party hasn’t asked for forgiveness yet, and yeah, one look she’s a goner for him.

      1
      1

The way she’s written also may be the author’s way of showing their age difference— not to say that just because Nian Nian is a bit younger, then it automatically says that she’s for sure more immature, but that because she’s younger and at a different life stage as Gun, she’s got a little bit of a different approach and a little bit of a different perspective to things. Nian Nian is also has the personality of a super happy-go-lucky type, and nothing really does upset her or phase her unless it’s when she sees someone that she loves getting hurt….. I could be totally wrong and off base, because I’ve not reached that point in the drama and still don’t know what goes down, so I’ll have to see if my thoughts about this changes once I reach that hurdle in the drama =)

Such a heartwarming scene! The ten year feud has finally come to an end… #GoGoSquid

Episodes 35 and 36 gave me more insight of Gun’s personality and his whole noble idiocy. Even from 10 years back, he had always handled relationship going south as something he could easily toss away.

*LONG ESSAY BELOW*

10
17

Gun attaches himself to relationships pretty easily as what his mother told Nian Nian. Team Solo became his family when he struggled to find his own identify – who he was as a person and what he wanted to do in life. He gave his entire inheritance to this team who provided him home (his crazy money spending goes way way back!). When things went south, however, he dropped this team in a heartbeat. He didn’t even think twice.

When the truth was revealed on his ten-year feud with Solo, I had wondered what the big deal was with it that Gun couldn’t let go of it?

So Solo called it quits to look after his child, then Appledog and Solo broke up, I guess this meant Appledog wanted out of the group too(? I’m not too sure of this bit). Anyways Solo leaving the group freaked Gun out and he announced retirement on his dream national championship stage. He quit everything he had bet his life on because he couldn’t handle relationships going south. To him, it’s always been one for all, all for one mindset. He is bitter all these years because Team Solo was everything he had and it broke just like that; that one person he looked up to and gave him dreams, Solo, had disappointed him, broke him.

    6
    0

Fast forward to his first romantic relationship – this was yet another relationship he easily opened up his heart to. Based from what happened a decade ago, I think I can see now why he had given up on his relationship with Nian Nian fast. It got too complicated to deal with. And the person Nian Nian cared for didn’t approve of him; he had been berated and looked down upon. His conversation with Mama Tong made him think that he might not really be the right person for her. He must have thought this was just another failed relationship he had involved himself with.

This is why I really loved that Nian Nian had the best girlfriend ever in Ya Ya and that this awesome girlfriend gave Gun a piece of her mind. He’s been selfish all this time, calling quits so easily whenever things go south. Gun’s strong feelings for Nian Nian and Ya Ya’s push resulted to Gun taking on bigger responsibilities now of protecting his and Nian Nian’s happiness.

Okay that gif was from ep 37 which was I haven’t seen yet, but I needed to post this long essay now before I lost my thoughts again. That short Team Solo clip is one of my favourites ever and a must gif, so there you go! 😬

Really I think the reason for breaking the team was way too immature. I mean i get solo’s decision for leaving only. He had to take care of a child and they worked tirelessly in which it could be difficult to look after his kid alone. But Gun’s reaction was pretty childish and solo and appledog breakong up doesn’t necessarily mean that they can’t work together too. Even if all of this was reasonable, carrying the grudge for 10 years wasn’t. Also, it wasn’t really deliberately Solo’s mistake. I found it weird that only Solo and Appledog apologized while I consider Gun at fault too. These three need to apologize to Mi and All. But well the story did hit it right on the fact that they were young and ambitious and hyper that is why they took this step. Other than that I guess we shouldn’t even take this show that seriously lol. The story as a whole is a little childish. What they do get completely right is the struggle of a new age career or a lesser know career. The careers that don’t span upto a lifetime and don’t get as much respect from the society are considered useless by many. It is also very well portrayed that Tong Nians parents aren’t willing to let her to date him because he has such a career. I have seen that in reali life too but Mi Shaofei’s struggle hits the closest to home. Being no longer that good in a career which you used to be great in or thought so and also knowing that if you don’t continue you’d probably get worse. That is why ep 29 was my favorite of the show. This is the only thing the show gets completely right. The rest is good fluff too but isn’t all that sensible.

    3
    1

We can all agree that the plot is not this show’s strongest point. I agree with you that it shouldn’t be taken seriously. And there are so many things I disagree with Gun as a character that I don’t dare to justify them because he’s flawed, and I don’t like how the writer portrayed him this way. The biggest gripe I have is he lies his way through which was brought up again in last night’s viki episodes.

With what little we can work with the plot, I saw the connection between these two relationships he strongly attached himself to and tried flesh it out more. But at the end of the day, Gun’s retirement and detachment from the group was immature. Gun’s break up with Nian Nian and how he promised her mother that he would stay away without putting up a decent fight was immature. He let these two relationships go because he didn’t know how to handle them when they get hard to deal with until recently, that is.

I find it interesting how each member dealt with the aftermath of disbandment. Xiao Mi made his decision to leave the profession entirely that he regretted now. All remained in the profession and honed his skills further. Appledog stopped being directly involved with competition, rather became a manager instead to CTF players. Solo as promised to Gun, he would not captain any CTF group. He ended up as the owner of a CTF club. And Gun, even though he doesn’t play professionally anymore, his hands never slowed down from playing games be it CTF or any kind of games and he ended up being a CTF club owner too. Xiao Mi definitely did get the short end of the stick with the group’s sudden disbandment. Well, they were young and impulsive.

      2

    @13infamyss

I’m sorry but I got to disagree with you on this one. Yes, Gun is someone who throws himself 1000% into a relationship(not just the romantic one), gives his all, expects the other party(ies) to do the same but he does not drop them in a heartbeat.

In fact, he cannot let go and I don’t mean his grudge. He was and still is in a love-hate relationship with Solo all these years. He’s so emotionally and personally invested in the group and Solo that he took Solo’s departure as a rejection of himself. If he didn’t set up KK Group and channel all the pent up hurt and energy, he would have probably gone down the road of self destruction.

I’m not sure but I think Gun either has an issue of self esteem or a need to be accepted and loved. Maybe both. Being part of Team Solo and an elite player gave him the kind of recognition and acceptance he craved for. Without it, he was lost. His self worth now hung upon leading Team KK to world championship.

When Tong Nian’s mother confronted him, he found nothing within to defend himself. At that time, he only knew he liked her but not how much he loved her. That wasn’t enough to dismiss the self doubts that he deserved her and was capable of making her happy. As someone who doesn’t know how to be happy for over 10 years, it’s not surprising that he chose noble idiocy because he can just continue to punish himself. His biggest flaw is that he doesn’t realize it’s not just him who’s hurting but Nian Nian. The same goes for Solo, Appledog and gang.

Yes, I’m sorry. That was a mistake on my part. I shouldn’t have said he dropped his group “in a heartbeat” when thinking back, he did to his best ability to convince Solo not to leave the group. Heck, he’d even want to adapt Xiao Ai and be a father to her just so Solo didn’t leave and could concentrate leading the pack. When all things failed, he couldn’t stand the impending truth that Team Solo was coming to an end. Before it even happened, he had called it quits.

Yes, we discussed this in Ayan’s post that he does have insecurities/low self-esteem especially with handling relationships. It was shown not only with Team Solo, Nian Nian but also to his grandfather and mother. He’s attached to them too and has soft spot for both of them, but he had put up a barrier for years until recently as well.

Your last paragraph – I completely agree. Until Ya Ya talked him out of his noble idiocy, he was fine being hurt again from another relationship he opened himself to without completely understanding that it wasn’t just him hurting.

      2
      1

I could see why it was perceived that Gun dropped his group so abruptly. Even if we knew his efforts to salvage the situation, his announcement still looked like a cop out.

        2
        1

Now that I’m recollecting my thoughts one more time, I think what I wanted to say was in these two scenarios, he had been the first one to drop everything when he found it too much to bear. His decisions to retire and to break up happened because he didn’t know how to deal with “change”. Team Solo was changing because a member’s priorities had changed. Solo offered him a resolution – let him take over and lead the team; he didn’t want that. It’s all or nothing to him.

His relationship with Nian Nian was changing too. In the four months they had an on and off relationship, things suddenly got too serious when Mama Tong talked to him about their differences, his shortcomings and why she thought he didn’t deserve her daughter. It took him a while to accept that he was ready to take on his relationship with Nian Nian further. That it’s definitely more than just a fling to him.

          2
          2

I haven’t watched episode 36. But based on episode 35, I thought Gun held a grudge against Solo, not because of the disband (due to Solo finding out he has a kid). But because of Solo’s “disappareance” , lack of support, lack of engagement etc AFTER the disband. I thought Gun felt abandoned, lonely. But well, it’s still not 100% clear to me.

From my understanding of Gun’s story in ep 27, I would need to rewatch to confirm this, but I think Solo wanted to quit and hand over the captain title to him. Gun fought with him that it wouldn’t be Team Solo without him and Appledog.

So I believe when they went into the national championship, Gun was already determined to quit the group and retire before they even made a mutual decision as a group
