Huehehhe but this time she doesn’t return his stare, my heart actually hurts seeing these. Didn’t like the amnesia plot but that feeling of longing for her that he can’t explain……

This whole episode hurt, everytime she said he isn’t Haru my heart broke for him a little more, it was sad!

It was so sad! I felt terrible watching her struggle with (1) losing a close friend (and potential boyfriend), (2) the knowledge that she might have been the reason Haru disappeared, and (3) keeping a distance from him because she didn’t want to cause his disappearance. It sort of made the amnesia plot horrible. However, I forgive the (drama) writer because it was a great way to introduce Baek-kyung’s awareness and give us a sense of his feelings for Dan-oh; it gave us a bit more information about the weird merging/melding/colliding manhwas plot in the background; provided further evidence that Dan-oh might really be able to change the plot**; gave us an opportunity to see how important Haru had become in Dan-oh’s life, as well as potentially advance the romantic aspect of their relationship (at least that’s what I drew out of the last scene in ep 8); and it gave the characters opportunities to explore some of the broader existential themes which have been bubbling in the background (like, for instance, the difficulty in carving out a ‘self’ when one lives in a fiction world full of 2-dimensional people and when one’s own personality and memories are fabricated).

** Or maybe she isn’t changing the plot? Maybe the weird plot changes are still preordained, just not in the manhwa she’s from (“Secret”, I think it’s called). Based on the fact that lots of Dan-oh’s scenes (e.g. her words at the dinner party with Baek-kyung) and Haru’s scenes (e.g. when he told Dried Squid – who, btw, is totally a villain – a few episodes ago that he will change Dan-oh’s fate, regardless of the personal cost) seem to emulate scenes from “Trumpet Creeper”, it might be that the divergences in “Secret” are scenes that have been transplanted from “Trumpet Creeper”.

I think this was one of the few instances where I actually thought the amnesia trope was accepted and really well done! Like you said it showed us and explored a lot of Dan-oh’s struggles, the consequences of trying to change the story and messing up with the plot, the stakes! Dan-oh’s sadness was so palpable, and her fear all the more justified, she couldn’t bring herself to get closer to him again knowing what was going to happen, seeing her lose hope was heartbreaking, really!

It’s kind of scary when you think about it, they’re from a different Manhwa who somehow found their way here, and although they think they’re changing the storyboard, it’s actually being carried out the same one way or another, also the “changes” aren’t exactly changes when they’ve happened before, Trumpet creeper is now integrated in Secret, which means whatever caused Haru to run away from or travel to this new world is actually going to happen here! It’s again pre-determined!
