Beanie level: The Goblin’s underpants

Haven’t posted on the fan wall for a while now. Finally picking up a drama again (after being scarred by Pretty Noona’s 2nd half). First verdict of Why Secretary Kim ep 1: I like it! I like it a lot! The directing reminds me so much of BTIOFL, and can’t wait for recap to be posted to gush all about it (if it ever get posted). I really hope it’s good! Please don’t disappoint me, show!

Hooray! Lots of us are really excited about it, and I’m seeing so many familiar faces from the BTLIOF recaps pop up on the fan wall now. It makes me so happy. I hope today’s episode is just as delightful!

Can I just hit everyone on INAR?

The doctor for believing more lies can preserve trust. Ji-Ah and Santa Maria team for stacking up lies after lies after lies. Min-Kyu for stupidly unaware of everything despite his “GEEENIUSSSS” status. And Me, for continuing watching despite knowing how crazy and ridiculous the plots are.

Tilda might be the only one skipping happily to the bank after all this.

And hats off to Yoo Chul for discovering the ruse from a few mins video. He’s more genius than Min Kyu.

I feel you. The plot frustrates me in the sense that its so ridiculous I can not take it seriously. That said, I keep coming back for more. In my opinion, when the leads have chemistry and know how to make you feel their pain makes a world of difference. Like, I feel and believe what they’re feeling if that makes any sense lol.

    7
    1

LOL the leads are the only reason I’m staying as well. I’ve checked myself out of the crazy plots episodes ago 😁

could it be that this drama wants to break the dramaland genius myth first by making the supposed genius a dummy, making someone with supposedly low IQ invent things and showing that despite being smart, the scientists were as locked up in their lab as Min Kyu in his house so neither knows a lot about human society and what is the best thing to do

What iz thiz INAR? First you Tilda-ed me, then you forced me to watch the seperation twice, then I had to go through lots and lots of heartbreaking criesss and then you just had to end it THAT way. Whatizthiz?

I wish Tilda is hit by dramaverse truck of doom. And be a lingering ghost. Bad Tilda.

I know! But.. can Tilda be its last victim? I promise I’d go to extra length to promote ToD as a positive character after that!

Tilda is gone with the wind!!!..

its simpler for KM to just meet this short hair girl who looks like AJ3.. and BG telling him that he knows Jo and modeled AJ3 after her giving her Jo’s mannerisms and characteristics..likes and dislikes..

and that some aspect of conversation have been stored in memory stick so jo can find an excuse later on in case she reveals sthg which she as jo is not meant to know

and KM can’t be happier to find a human version fo AJ3..

IT IS SO SIMPLE.. SHOW! 😛

Rant on Smart Prison Living: 7 & 8 (Spoiler ahead)

The parallel of Je Hyuk’s conversation with Captain Yoo and Je Hyuk’s conversation with Min-Sung’s conversation at the infirmary bed was beautifully done. I like that they ask the question of “what’s next?” when you’ve hit rock bottom – who to blame for it? Yourself? Someone else? Captain Yoo’s anger towards the world is heartbreakingly justified, but anger will only lead to pain and other toxic feelings, and you won’t be able to survive with those alone. I’m glad Je Hyuk made him realized that there are other ways to survive “what’s next.” And this point is beautifully iterated later on during his conversation with Min Sung, that blaming yourself and questioning “if only” will only bring more pain and hurt you. And that hurting yourself is not the answer.

Each of them deals with being in prison differently. But they need to have something to look forward to – even as little as looking forward to rewards, or competition or event happening in the prison, or what the prison shop sells, waiting for a letter, a cigarette, or even instant coffee. Finding reasons to appreciate small things in life is no small feat, and I’m glad that those are the things that made them eager and have purpose to wait for the next day to come.

And on a lighter note, I just love the slow-burn attraction between Jun-Ho and Je-Hee. The way he hangs his head when he realized Je-Hee knows about him going on the blind date is everything. And the way he protested a bit too much to his brother about not liking Je-Hee that way was so telling. I love that they’re totally utilizing Je-Hyuk as an excuse to get close to each other. And if I were Je-Hee, I would fall for him too. How could you not, when he did that one swoony thing of sending his brother on behalf of him just to make sure you’re home safely.

And Lt. Paeng sorting the coffee & sugar for Captain Yoo is just PURE LOVE.

Is Captain Yoo in Smart Prison Living a nudge to DOTS’ Captain Yoo? If it is, then it’s pretty awesome LOL!

Replying here because I don’t know where else to post to you. I talked Tom into watching The Devil and analyzing and wow! fantastic comments. Wish you were with us! I’d love to get your insights.

I really wish I could join you guys! I haven’t watch Mawang and it’s been on my list for a very long time. But real life’s been pretty hectic towards this year end (no long holiday break for me sadly), and so by the time I’m about to start, you guys probably have finished watching.

But let me know the next drama you’d like to discuss, and maybe I’d be able to join in after this real-life craziness ends.

Tom hadn’t watched it either, so he watches a couple of episodes then makes his amazing analysis. He hasn’t finished yet. I try to re watch along with him to catch the visuals and the story of Faust retold thru Ju Ji hoon and Shin Mi na. It’s so good.
I hardly have time right now to watch anything and the only new one I’m watching is Just Between Lovers, which I really like, but in Ep 3 I’m still wondering what the plot is.

It sounds so much fun! I’ll try a couple of eps if I have time this weekend (although not sure if i can add more to my plate now). I’m still watching Wise Prison Life, and it feels like watching 2 shows of 4 eps already with the long hours they have for the drama. Dropping others for the time being, but would probably pick up I’m Not a Robot back for some laughs later when time permits.

Check out the most commented section – our discussion is now the most commented! Read some of Tom’s comments first because the show doesn’t get fantastic until the middle and it might not peak your interest the first couple episodes.
I’m only watching Just Between Lovers and I’d like to know what the scenes are in the opening credits. I thought it was photos of the Space Mall collapse that the leads were trapped in, but then they show the ferry that sank in real life so I’m wondering if the other scenes are other human error tragedies. The lead guy (forget his name) reminds me of a young Song Joon ki for some reason.

            0
            0

            @linda-palapala

Just checked out Just Between Lovers ep 1. I think the scenes in the opening credits refer the Sewol ferry tragedy that impacted Korea in 2014.. I think the drama is a tribute to those dealing with the aftermath of a disaster, thus the sank ferry in the opening credit.

The collapsed building tragedy in the drama itself was inspired by another tragedy that happened in 1995. I remember watching a documentary once about the collapsed Sampooong shopping mall (and yes, it happened due to human error). Maybe you’d want to read it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sampoong_Department_Store_collapse

But in the drama, the “supposed” accident happened in 2005 so I think they’re inspired by the incident but not exactly being historically correct about it.

Rant on Smart Prison Living: 5 & 6 (Spoiler ahead)

This drama really feels like it belongs in the Answer Me universe. Can we have a crossover please! The long hours however, are not my favourite part. I really need to split the episode into an hourly ep so it’s easier to digest though.

Park Hae Soo is awesomely adorable in this, he’s learning the ropes very fast on how prison works. I love how ignorant he looks but how observant he really is. And Jung Kyung Ho is one DELIGHTFULLY AWESOME sidekick. He got my heart the moment he stepped in as his bff benefactor to the family. I also like the fact that romance is secondary here (as of now), and that I’m pretty happy that we wont get into another Who’s the Husband argument. And I love how everyone in the prison were very supportive and accepting of him fanboying Je Hyuk at all hours haha. And the prison roommates? I LOVE them! Chaebol & Kaist had me in stitches, Min Chul broke me (in a good way) and Captain Yoo looks set to crush my heart in the process. Heh.

I love all of Je-hyuk’s cellmates. I can’t wait for both Chaebol and Captain Yoo to broke my heart in this week eps.

I finally started on Smart Prison Living and LOVED it so far. It does give you the Answer Me feels and Park Hae Soo had me at his pokerface. Je Hyuk’s really good at giving the aloof pokerface look, slightly dense, but he’s actually pretty far ahead in the way he thinks. At 2nd episode, I could totally see how hardworking and determined he is, and how he could get to where he is. Prison life will only make him tougher, and you can’t help but root for him. The last time I’m this giddy about prisons are during those early Prison Break days (ahem, season 1), where I was rooting for Scofield, not for him to break out from it, but for him to survive living in it.

I wish it wasn’t just a 1-2 episode recap on Dramabeans (but the SPL recap button at the bottom of the page is not there anymore (nooooo), but I’m not putting up hopes too high with the slow subs coming out. This year sure feels like having slower subs for lots of shows and you know how it is – Slow subs = delayed discussion = deflated emotions all around. It kills the live recapping-commenting mood.

13
7

After trying several dramas, I finally decided on Just Between Lovers and with only the 2nd episode I’m hooked. It’s dealing with tragedy (I think because of the ferry tragedy) and the PTSD the main characters and their families have to deal with in the aftermath. I’m very impressed with the two young leads’ acting so far, like the cinematography, but have yet to watch with decent sound to evaluate but I hear it’s really good.
I can’t watch other shows because I don’t subscribe to KOCOWA yet. I know what you mean about slow subs. I’ve read they’re having trouble finding enough fans to do the subtitles. And you liked the early Prison Break days? Me too. They ruined that show by the third season.

At episode 6, I’m liking Wise Prison Life/ Smart Prison Living a lot. Park Hae Soo & Jung Kyung Ho are awesome besties and bromance. You can’t help but believe they really belong in the same Answer Me universe.

I have loved Prison Break – watched them on tv, collected the dvds (up until season 2) and Scofield was pretty much my tv crush through and through. Season 1 of PB is all kinds of awesome, Season 2 still ok, but yeah, then it went off the rail and I forgot what I watch haha. I went on to watch all seasons, but coudn’t even finish ep 2 of the most recent one.

And I adore Jung Kyung ho. Guess I’ll try at another site… Answer Me universe?
Prison Break: Yes, same exact thing here: tv crush, off the rail, yes; ep 2 of most recent, yes!

I loved him in Heartless City. And have you seen the movie Sunny? I thought it was really good, but I thought it was going to be a comedy, with the name Sunny. I think he got best new actor for his role. Aw, I’ve liked him in everything.

            0

He’s amazing in Heartless City. I love him in rom-com too. Found him in Smile, You and survived 45 episodes for him too (my first weekend drama). But i have yet to watch Sunny, though I’ve been hearing lots of good things about it.

          0
          1

Ha, Smile, You was my first attempt at 45 episodes too! Sunny is way darker than I thought it would be, and I read it’s an attempt by a male to view the Vietnam War thru a female’s eyes.

So I\’ve cooled down a bit after my initial response of being frustrated with BTIOFL ending. I\’ve gathered my thoughts and looking back, I guess the ending wasn\’t all that bad. I guess I was upset because I’ve loved the show too much, and I’m always too critical of things I love. At the end of the day, I think I would always go back to the show, reminiscing the emotional journey the show made me feel (inclusive of all the heart-flutterings, heartbreaks and heart-bleeds). I don’t want to leave the show feeling bitter, so I chose to forgive and have closure. Lee Min Ki and Jung So Min are awesome in this. Would I watch anything this writer write again? Heck ya I will. It’s just that I wouldn’t trust her too much as I used to.

1

I wanted to say it’s okay, as long as it’s a happy ending, but it still hurts so much because I’m expecting so much more. I trusted you, Show. I mean, WE trusted you, Show! It’s been a while since I trusted a show this much, and to be trolled at the final hours is plain evil. Sometimes I feel like the show’s trying to be too philosophical at the final hours, but lost all its senses on me. I am still a bit upset at Ji Ho, I am still angry with the angst, I am still confused with the ending, but I will forgive you show. Because I have loved you for 14.5 episodes, and because I wanted closure. (I might swear off kdrama for a while though – the pain is too real)

I’m looking forward for the recap because I need to read beanies’ positive comments and reasonings to ease my confused heart.

I can understand her reasons for wanting to nullify the contract, I can understand them actually going through with it, I TRY to understand everything, him, her, but girl, running away is not the answer, no matter what “intermission” you disguise it in. Angst, I really hate you. I would probably try to think rationally later, but for now, all hell just broke loose the moment Se Hee cried. You better be good 16!

13
5

Honestly, I don’t understand. At all. I have no idea how we got from “I will wait for his heart to come to me” to “I want out now” in the span of a couple hours. It feels like manufactured angst drummed up to insert the mandatory separation.

I expected better of you, show. You had better redeem yourself in the finale!!!

    3
    1

I usually give it the benefit of doubt that Ji Ho wants to nullify the contract because she wants a fresh start without any previous baggage attached (albeit how flimsy it sounds), but the more the episode goes, the more confused I get. By the end of it, I was like.. what the hell just happened?

I’m praying hard for the finale to be good. Like REALLY good so I can gloss this one over.

      2

Usually it’s easy for me to try to understand these characters, even when the majority already raising complaint for certain scenes. But this time, i really couldn’t understand both Se-hee and Ji-ho at all. You’ve learnt to be honest, people. Talk, please, just talk. All these hurt feelings actually can be easily avoided, sigh…

    2
    1

Exactly. I was so attached to them and in previous scenes/eps I was usually on the fence and try to look at it from different point of view, and like you, usually I could understand them pretty easily too. But this episode just… LOST me. It feels like they’re stepping backwards, and it’s really frustrating and drives me crazy to see both of them talk to EVERYONE but each other.
