Beanie level: Errand boy

Undoubtedly a valuable new word to add to my dictionary.
I’m gonna giggle whenever archeopteryx is mentioned for a very long time.

IDK.
That I was away long enough to forget how silly these ads sometimes are?
That when they try to make pretty women ugly, it does not work?
That magical make-up is hard to buy in store?

I don’t understand Korean beauty standards sometimes. I hate it when the female lead is portrayed with frizzy hair and glasses and that’s supposed to make her “ugly” (probably because I look just like that lol).
One thing I’m enjoying about The Secret Life of My Secretary is that the heroine sports this exact look, but the guy doesn’t try or want to change her, and he’s falling for her real self rather than her fake glamorous act.

Right, I almost forgot SoS, that’s exactly what I like about it. It is also very difficult to make Jin Ki-joo ugly or mediocre, she looks even cuter.

I just remembered that I should make a note.
I watched this beautiful drama full of love and tropes that actually moved the story in a meaningful way.

Again Kim Eui-sung lost his face in episode 11.
I miss his pitiful alter ego.

My friend is currently in Okinawa for her doctor studies. Andsince it became an option for holidays I demanded to see SK since we would be so close. At least Jejudo is a possibility since my bf is…

a biologist and Jeju is vulcanic island. And since Wiki says a lot, we might shift all plans to Jeju. Eeeeek! I might need to make a serious survey to make my case since I absolutely need to see Seoul. Gosh, how did this become a real possibility! I would have never imagined.

I am soo hyped about this. Still no time to make a whole survey. I might ask beanies about their experiences in open thread. I remember there were some discussions last year or so, so I need to go back to find them.

Whatever posessed me that I decided to rewatch Lie to me?
It was in my first 10 dramas, it that is a valid excuse.
I fell asleep halfway through.

It got bearable since I found JB’s recaps. Her desperation makes me suffer less. She even had to change to open threads about ep.10 😅
I only remembered the terrible and dragging ending. But hey, it aged well. It is still as stupid as it was when I first saw it.

I just love how she is so strong and straightforward and calls it as she sees it. This is my favorite character already from all the shows I’ve seen her in.

For me Oh Hae-yeong is hardly beatable. But Se-kye has a great mixture of self-confidence and arrogance, rarely seen in women.

She was great in Oh Hae-yeong to be sure – but I find that I like her even more here.

I do not know why I did not expect T.K. to have something to say about BTS and k-pop. Enjoy, beanies.

An interesting analysis. OFC it goes without saying that earlier groups paved the road for K-pop internationally & self-producing groups did exist even before BTS, but I do think Bangtan are defining a new standard in international presence & what it means to tell a story through your music. I do say this as a fan of BTS, and also as someone following trends generally.

Within SK however, I think the newest thing is not BTS-style music but Wanna One style groups brought together and debuted by broadcast stations, not training agencies. Sadly this is even more exploitative a system than the traditional K-pop model since the broadcast system has zero investment in the human artist, and is free to focus entirely on monetary profits.

I really can’t say what is a new trend, I just recently fell for BTS and had hard time exploring k-pop. Yes, the system is exploitative. I would never survive in such environment. Nice input, @greenfields, thank you.

Also, this, “The point is not to see which strategy wins the race; rather, it is to anticipate the path of global K-pop in the coming years by observing the two models’ call-and-response.” I discussed BTS above because I’m most familiar with them. 🙂 This was pretty interesting. Hmm…

Nice use of song, the original feels more indie.

They did mention it in that one scene with the SungYeon when he noticed she was allergic to flowers…

    1
    1

It was funny because in that scene, if Mi-so was so allergic to them that just walking into a florist’s is enough to set her sneezing, how did she not react to the vase of flowers on their table until after they ordered and got their food??

      2
      1

And why on earth did she not ask for its removal herself.

        1
        1

YES. It’s a small inconsistency but it bothers me. Although tbh at the start, she was pretty bad at expressing things that she’s uncomfortable with, such as the bouquet in Ep1 and the roller coaster in Ep3.

But still, if you’re in this much discomfort, you don’t wait for an observant person nearby to Sherlock it and then ask for the allergen to be removed!

          1
          2

She could have seen flowers from outside too. Well, let’s get back to hugs and kisses and falling under the table when being called oppa. #staypositive

@allphryne Yes yes! For its flaws, Secretary Kim is a very refreshing take on typical rom-com tropes. I love that so much of the action is about Young-joon learning to fit himself to what makes Mi-so comfortable and happy.

The writing of this show is quite inconsistent! At first the showed YJ as someone who after working 9 yr working with MS had no idea about her allergic reaction to flower… but all of a sudden he changed to a very considerate boss who’s known everything about her from the very beginning…

    5

As much as I love this show I found that bit a bit of lazy writing too!
