Beanie level: Errand boy

I was wondering how the heck a love hexagon would work, logistically, but they’re doing a pretty good job of it in Brahms without making my brain hurt too much.

I’m enjoying Kim Min Jae’s performance. I must admit I didn’t think he could pull this character off, but he’s doing a great job. Still waiting for him to break out in a full rap though.

He has a lot acting potential, so I sort of felt going in that he’d do a good job. In that sense, I feel he’s meeting my expectations in this drama.

I want him to start dancing in an episode of Brahms LOL

I’m waiting for him to rap too. Hahahahahhaa

‘Dream’ is still iconic and I don’t understand why Kim Min-jae doesn’t rap in every OST!

Just getting into the swing of dramas again after a while. Last drama I finished was Stove League. Starting Brahms and Record of Youth, which are good so far, and marathoned Mystic Pop-up Bar yesterday, which I *loved*. But, somehow, I’ve got this weird craving to watch Cinderella and the 3 Knights again. Not sure why, I can’t remember anything much about it except it was pretty terrible. The heart wants what it wants, I guess.

I loved Park So-dam in it, after I saw her in Parasite. I’m so glad I’ve seen it so I can get a better sense of her acting. I like seeing her in Four Meals a Day too when Jung woo-sung joined the group.

Because it has Jung Il-woo maybe? 😉 I wouldn’t rewatch it, but I still listen to the OST and watch a few scenes now and then.

How was Stove League actually? I watched the first couple of episodes but I sensed that it was going to be intense so I decided to put it on hold for lighter options and come back later.

    1

It was excellent, I thought. I also prefer lighter fare, and Stove League had some emotionally heavy moments, but it was all good!

Is there anybody else that wishes that the Western hemisphere wore masks like everyone in Asia? Why don’t we? If we’re asymtomatic or mildly symptomatic, there’s no way we can get tested, and we’re saving a whole bunch of other people if we go out with a mask.

I see pics on reddit of a subway in UK where people are packed in (these are the people who have to get to work, I’m assuming), trying not to breathe, and NO ONE is wearing a mask. It’s not that bad in the US, but people at the grocery store *clearly* have not a clue how to do social distancing. If everyone wore masks, even if they’re homemade, I would feel much more comfortable.

Sigh, the trials and tribulations of a germaphobe in the midst of a pandemic.

Stay healthy, everyone.

13
13

The fact is 95% of masks are useless and those that aren’t are only worth wearing if you’re actually infected. I know it has a psychological component but those people wearing surgical masks are just as contagious as those who aren’t.

    7
    1

Not according to several college labs that have run tests. Several MDs are circulating the test data as well as patterns to make masks at home.

      2
      0

This isn’t as simple as wear masks..
    1. It is a sad situation if you have to wear masks – clear indication of how we have ruined the planet
    2. Even if you do wear masks – it is like any other precaution taken. People should take precautions, but no number of precautions will ever be enough. Something new will come up
    3. This should be a lesson to each on how interconnected the world is and if bio weapons were to be used, the devastation it can cost in a couple of months will be unprecedented. This should be eye opening moment for governments to realize how lopsided and centralized the economic model is, what the core critical dependencies are
    4. And lastly, people and government should prioritize accountability. I remember someone applauding a singing video of their celeb, to which i commented that the initiative was by the chinese govt.. and instead of focusing on the singing video, chinese govt. needs to be questioned on true statistics and people – that would have helped other countries take action way before they actually did – and instead i was attacked for not appreciating the idol’s video..lol

    5. Anyways, this is a wake up call that climate and environment has become extremely unstable.. we don’t have 100 years to correct the situation.. but each one of us needs to become conscious of this in our daily routine actions

There’re pictures of Italy and Venice and some people came to realise that nature would be so fine without humans. The water cleared, they can see fish in canals of Venice and swans and dolphins. There’re wild boars visiting depopulated streets. Yep we destroyed our planet very much.

      1
      2

It makes me feel hopeful though. I hope that the media keeps showing the changes in the environment that have happened so quickly especially the drops in air pollution.
I know some things are irreversible or will go back to the way they were, but it is s way to show people that we do make a huge difference, it matters.

        3

It’s sad that it took an epidemy to finally see changes to the environment and nature,
and help to the homeless population (in our area).

I’m just afraid it will be worse when everything will be back to “normal”.

          0
          0

    I know what you mean.

I find the wearing versus not wearing masks approaches very strange. I’ll explain.

Health agencies in the US recommend against the use of face masks unless one is sick. In my area (US), they have actually been sold out (or taken out from stores?) since January/February. So I’m not even debating about wearing them or not.

However, I know that it is mandatory in some Asian countries. I cannot say that it applies to all of them, but where my family lives, one currently cannot get on the bus or subway without wearing one, regardless of your health condition. They stopped selling face masks in convenience stores, then controlled the distribution via pharmacies (you had to show your ID # too). Because of the low supplies, it was even communicated how to desinfect and reuse them in dire needs. And no, they aren’t believed to fully protect a person, but only to some extent. Also, it is used as a courtesy as to not spread any spit etc (just like we are taught to sneeze/cough into a napkin or into an elbow). Up to today, all reported cases of infected have been traced to the source, and there has not been any community spread.

I watched a Japanese documentary once on NHK (before this epidemy), and it was said Japanese didn’t originally wear masks to protect themselves but as a courtesy for others.

Anyway, I’m not saying that one should or should not wear any mask. I am not saying whether it is effective or not. I just find interesting to see different approaches taken by different countries.

And I just hope that those who work in the medical field, who are risking their lives for us, in any country… I sincerely hope they can get new supplies of appropriate masks/protective gears.

    4
    1

The people in my household have gotten to the point that irregardless, we will wear a mask every time we leave the house now— regardless if we are sick, regardless if are immunocompromised, regardless of the efficiency of the mask… At least it’s better than nothing, at least it’s better nothing and better than potentially having someone sneeze or cough on you and you receive the FULL impact of it

    2
    1

On two separate occasions, I was conversing with two different persons. At some point, they spoke a bit too fast – or it just happened – but I saw a small droplet/spit of saliva coming out of their mouth. I will admit I wondered if I was far enough (it was before social distancing was recommended), and wished – at that specific moment- that one of us was wearing any mask or that we were even much further apart.

      1
      0

Me! I wish we all had a mask and were directed to wear them if we leave home. There are several Twitter threads right now (on by an MD) showing the efficacy of masks made of different fabrics/materials as well as free patterns for those who sew.

    3
    0

At this point, I’d just like to know where a mask is actually available. I kid you not, I haven’t seen one available since late January.

Oh my gosh, an MC’s worst nightmare. This was supposed to be the last episode of Mister Trot, which everyone and their dog was watching (it got 35% ratings). They had citizen live voting by text, they were going to count the votes, and announce the winner at the end of the show. But there were over 7 million votes, and it was taking forever to count because that many votes was choking the servers.

So Kim Sungjoo had to VAMP for TWENTY-FIVE minutes (at around 1am KST!), and then announce that sorry, there was no way those votes could be counted that day or even by the next day, so they’re announcing the winner next week. Hahahahaha! I felt so bad for him. Hopefully netizens won’t ream him or the production team too badly.

NOOOOO, whyyyyyy?????? I am genuinely sad. I’ve watched since the very beginning because I like Sungjae and I became a fan of the other three. I remember the episode where they all ate snow and promised to be brothers forever and meet up when they’re old men. Argh, I’m going to cry so much when they show their last episode.

Who is the writer for Stove League, and can they please write every other show from now on, thank you.

10
6

Absolutely no! It’s badly written, i don’t want them to make every show into a hero worshipping spree!
Please no! The conflicts in the show are actually all upside down and pointless. I am stopping myself from making a full rant. Sorry.

On the other hand they are really good writers like the one who wrote My Ahjussi. You can ask for that, i will not complain.

    0
    2

      eh???

My ajusshi and strange secrets on the other hand are slightly overrated and overly overrated respectively

      **************
Stove league is quite interesting – keeps you invested, there is no hero worshipping, a very classical underdog to championship story.. and role of data (lol moneybag.. but then people should understand one of the earliest things that got predictive analytics its stardom was its use in baseball and how a losing team turned into a big brand)

      6
      1

Stranger/ forest of secret, yes it is overrated a bit.

But stove league is pure hero worshipping. It is as clear as a sunny day. If they wanted to show, some underdog story of use of saebermetrics, then god damn show that, don’t make every one else other than hero so stupid and with no agency to really fight back. The show is like watching players being power tripped. With NGM’s character being like god, who decides when to treat and when to punish and every one just accepts like a door mat.
And they get happy like a dog when they are given just a bit more of treats.

        0
        1

its taking the office vantage point..
i don’t see hero worshipping.. bullying/ seniority and money Vs performance and promotions/ board’s self interests Vs game/ fans .. there are some real themes in there..

rest it is a drama.. visual content takes its free pass/creative freedom to depict in a way that would engage audience..

you have your opinion.. but to me it is an engaging, page turner show.. it is fun..like i said, i don’t expect every drama to be social satire.. sometimes it is sufficient to be a good story..

my ajushi, personally was saved by Leads’ acting. else that show has a big fat nothing in terms of core content.. not even good frol slice of life perspective

          4
          0

Haha, you’re probably right, but I love this kind of underdog makes good myth-like story, I’m not into realistic stuff. To each their own, I guess.

I don\’t understand show ratings. How can the first half get 8% and the second half 11%? Do the extra 3% people just start watching the second half and not care about what happened in the first half?

8
1

That might be exactly it, especially now when, for most dramas, one 1-hour episode is actually split into two ~ 35-minute episodes, and people tune in after the commercial break after the first half hour, and then just watch the reruns (if there are any) when it comes on, to get up to speed with the first half of the episode

    2
    0

So, here\’s my comprehensive list of dramas that ended really well:
– Reply 1997
– Healer
– …

Maybe Nokdu will surprise me?

7
5

Do you have an alternate ending for this one too?

    1
    1

I disliked Healer ending. What is the use of sending a big fat baddie to the police station when you know he will be out in under 24 hours? Oh but we don’t have time to make sure he ends up in prison, we have to catch up on the cute.

    1
    0

That’s a very short list. Not surprising for kdramas. They can never write proper endings.

My most memorable endings I find satisfactory are from:
    Reply 1997
    Secret Love Affair
Padam Padam — it was the very last scene that made me fell in love with it.

3

It occurs to me when I\’m watching Nokdu, whether he is or isn\’t the king\’s son, how would anyone go about proving that? Couldn\’t anyone with the story details claim to be the king\’s son and take the throne? There are no DNA tests, not even blood type tests. I think normal people kept genealogy records, but Nokdu doesn\’t have any obviously. There are no photographs, people don\’t even recognize the king when he\’s walking around.

6
9

when one sense doesn’t work , other does..

At that time, people were so attuned emotionally, that theyd recognize their kin 😛 .. plus which child have you see who doesn’t resemble parents .. long live genetics

    1
    1

      Haha. Joseon telepathy?

I wish the genetics worked. I used to be a preschool teacher and I would constantly try to give the wrong kids to the wrong parents. They looked nothing like their parents!

      5
      1

ha ha .. hilarious.. i wonder how much were you feared by the parents

        0
        0

maybe they pricked blood and see if the two blood becomes one or forms aggregates. (I think this was shown in one saguek which i remember not but when the scene happened I was like…. that only looks at blood type….)

    2

Maybe (hopefully) there is still an old palace servant around who knows the story and has kept an eye on the prince errant.

I recently finished KING’S DAUGHTER SOO BAEK HYANG, where the king could recognise his daughter by the pin she wore, inherited from her mother. Of course, someone stole the pin so the king adopted the wrong girl.. (it’s complicated).

    3
    0

Exactly! I have no idea how they can prove Nokdu is King’s Son?

    3
    0

I always wonder which is closer to the truth. Was the king kept locked away, or could he wander around without his royal garments? It seems like most people outside of the palace wouldn’t know him.

    2
    0

I kind of assumed that they’ll never actually try to prove it beyond the word of Nokdu’s father. I mean, I feel like the only way Nokdu and Dongjoo can have their happy ending is by him eschewing all rights to the throne and riding off into the sunset. Also, Nokdu does not strike me as the type to want kingship or be involved in politics, and for the first time in a sageuk I’m actually waiting to see how the political shenanigans play out.

    2
    1

I expect the same thing. Nokdu and Dongjoo move on to a life of anonymity (maybe next to a new widow’s village) and leave the king a better man.

OK, I had a Vagabond discussion with @katakwasabi about the bullets in the car, and it made me go back and screenshot it. For science. As katakwasabi mentioned, the bullets went through the metal body, but were apparently were stopped by the inner cheap super-Hyundai-plastic on the doors, so as to keep the passengers from harm.

Apparently the special effects guys drilled (large!) holes in the body, but only where it didn’t actually hurt anything — none on the gas tank area and none in the important engine parts. Also, the ‘randomness’ of the machine gun fire is not good, guys. You can do better than that.

5
8

I wonder how close this is to reality? How far can an actual bullet penetrate?

    1
    2

I think unless a bullet proof car, a bullet can easily penetrate any car.

You should do an analysis on the shipping container too. That one requires a suspension of disbelief of like…this is a cartoon proportions–not that the car is any less, but yeah.

    2
    1

They were shooting from inside a container with window slits….and somehow on one inside got shot or hit by a ricochet, and they manage to land a bullet or two on the baddies outside. They really have luck on their side.

      3
      1

That whole shooting episode inside and out of the shipping container was soooooo just unrealistic/illogical and I don’t know what else.
the bullet holes through the car and NO ONE gets hurt – then they all stand in front of the police and no one shoots until the Swat guy who obviously wasn’t one starts.

        and I didn’t see any flying tanks… 🙁

        1
        0

Hahahahaha!! Thank you for the screencaps. The interior of the car should be painted red with blood, but it was pristine. I don’t want KTW et al to die, though they really should have in this n-th gun fight (I lost count how many gun fights have happened).

Anyways.. this was a great Hyundai ad. The car is very durable. 😆
