Dinner Mate has been a very relaxing and enjoyable watch. The stakes are low, there\’s no real plot, but the characters are so engaging, alone and together. The exes are extremely annoying, but they don\’t bother me much because so far they weren\’t used to create misunderstandings, and our leads can\’t even bother with them. They exist as trauma to be overcome, and I\’m ok with that. I\’m sure in real life there are asshole exes like this. Hopefully the journey we will get to see is our main leads heal, find ways to shut their exes up, and get together. I\’m ok with this pseudo plot!

Right now I’m just enjoying how they manage to keep ‘missing’ each other in the way that they find out their real identity. It will be interesting when that comes about.
And it will be due to their mutual friend. hah… love this show!

    2
    1

I’m enjoying that too, although I don’t think it can go further than next week, and it will be really fun when they find out!
I love the chemistry between the OTP and their bond.
I need to see more of them together.

Please do! Tonally it’s very different from ML but the storytelling is just as solid, and the OTP is amazing! I mean, we could pretend this is an alternative Ming Lan universe where Gu Ting Ye while smart constantly fails at his scheme and Ming Lan is a much less reserved, still cunning, and extremely hilarious lady.

I’m too easily convinced, I’ll start it in June for sure x)

I’m laughing so much with ML even if it’s not a drama about blatant humor,

This was a subtle but hilarious physical joke in Tiger & Rose that I missed the first time I watched. This is a prime example of the smart gut-busting comedy that this show does so well.

He poisoned his cup, thinking they would feed each other wine from the cup in their own hand (his hometown’s custom), which means he thought he would feed her his cup. But she was used to doing the cross-cup way, and thus was going to drink from her own cup. That means, HE would have to drink the poisoned cup.
Realizing his fuck-up, he faked a cough, and switched the cups!
She, meanwhile, thought his awkward weird behavior was because she didn’t follow his custom, and switched to HIS way. Again, he was almost forced to drink his own poison.
Mind you, this whole time, she WANTED to be poisoned LOL

And that, everyone, is how we have two idiots who are meant to be together.

This show is so much fun. I missed this too. Also I’m kinda liking how the city gives women an upper hand they are blatantly telling how terrible women were treated back then but it hits more when it’s reversed with men.

    2
    1

I love love love the world she created! In her world too, it’s men who have to cover up! In her world, it’s men who are courtesans and have to entertain women. In her world, it’s women who educated and leading the army and basically the world! I love it! But how she’s not a perfect scriptwriter either and how she’s slowly seeing the flaws in her writing. That she had to think of “logic” because now that she’s living in it, some of her plot doesn’t make sense or draggy! lmao

How far is everyone into this drama? @dokutokunaneko @wapz @13infamyss

I’m just asking because I’ve checked on YouTube & Tencent’s website and not many episodes have even been released but y’all already seem REALLY into the drama as if it’s already been airing for a while now with many, many episodes out 😅😅😅😅

Next week for VVIPs, all episodes will be released.

As Wiki Addicts lists this drama as having 24 episodes total 👌🏻👌🏻

I noticed this! He thought they would “feed” each other, then when she did the arm entwining thing where you drink from your own cup, he switched them! Then she saw her mistake and tried feeding him where he did the opposite thing again! Then he just said “to hell with this!” and got rid of the poison altogether and was going to stab her neck with the chopstick. 😆 She fell asleep because the residual poison was still in the cup when she mixed the two and she drank both of them! Also, when his servant described the poison as colorless, Odorless, and completely dissolvable I’m water, both my daughter and I shouted IOCAINE POWDER!!!!” 😂

    2
    1

I think she just got drunk lol and that’s so cute about you and your daughter!! I wish my mom and I liked the same things haha

      0
      1

No, I don’t think so. Her servant even even said the next morning that she can usually hold her liquor so it didn’t make sense she would be drunk on one shot split into two cups.

        0
        2

And my daughter dies like the occasional cdrama.

          0
          1

The one who can hold her liquor is Chen Qian Qian, the one who can’t (and has no martial arts) is the writer, Chen Xiao Qian 😀 I think despite being sucked into the script world, she only inherited the looks, and none of the physical qualities of her “host”.

New crack drama alert: The Romance of Tiger and Rose. (+ some side philosophizing on why \”comedy\” doesn\’t mean \”shallow\”)

I just love, love everything about this drama. It makes me giddy and invested – the kind of feelings you know you only have when you find a crack drama. It\’s romcom that\’s heavy on both the rom and the com. The romance here is oh so convincing, both from the writing perspective and from the chemistry between two leads. They had TWO meet-cutes, they bicker, they try to kill each other (no, for real), they tolerate each other, come to an understanding, then go through many trials and tribulations together, and fall in love.

The progression of their relationship is not just logical, it\’s THRILLING and SO.DAMN.CUTE. Both the leads are smart people on their own, their only blind spot is each other (of course!). Their own stupidity when it comes to their relationship could have been frustrating with another execution, but here all it does is give us fuzzy heart-fluttering moments and howling laugh. I will never get tired of Han Shuo (ML) thinking Qianqian (FL) was madly in love with him only to be ignored the very next second. And I will always squeal whenever he tells her off-handedly that he loves her, only for her to be like, \”what now?\” LOL

The comedy here is also golden. I tried to find a gif or a screenshot to show you all, but it\’s so hard because the comedy is so *situational*. What that means is the jokes build on the knowledge you have from watching a previous scene, episode, etc. That\’s smart comedy. There\’s also cheap comedy – tongue in cheek poking fun at romcom tropes (that they also fully uitlize), quips, puns, slapstick, etc. I\’m pretty sure I had laughed every single episode for 12 eps so far – and as a big loyal fan of comedy TV (of all kinds, from Western to Asian styles), I know how hard it is to sustain laugh as plots develop, with some dose of drama thrown in.

Speaking of plot, there is one, and it\’s good! Often with \”silly idol romcom\”, the plot is on life support, which is usually the rom part. Here, there is an actual plot, and there are a few key high stakes that we are invested in, because we already care about our lovely characters. All of them are working towards their goals (most of them life and death!), in multiple steps, and the steps are met as we move through episodes. Nothing is stretched out for too long, no misunderstanding dragged on for dramatic purposes. Things that make sense to get resolved, do. Will I watch a drama with no plot just to see the romance? Yes (e.g. Her Private Life…) But when there is a plot, it makes it that much more exciting! How will our smart characters get out of their predicaments? How will they attain their goals, while still being together, if their goals and being together could conflict?

In any case, as you can see, I love romcoms, and I love them even more when they are smart, well executed, and have that magical \”it\” factor created by a synergy of actors, directing, and script. Though, let\’s be clear, this is on the lower budget side, and it is an idol drama. It doesn\’t try to be any grand historical drama, nor does it slack off and forget that a story, no matter how cheap, needs sense (we all been there, haven\’t we?) I just love it when a drama makes clear promises, and delivers on them, with fireworks. I have a lot of chip on my shoulders on how romcoms, and just comedies in general, tend to be looked down upon because it\’s \”simple\” or \”silly\”. \”Simple\” is not \”simplistic\”, and \”silly\” is not stupid. A well-done story is a well-done story, and that\’s that.

And that is what Romance of Tiger and Rose is – a well-done story 🙂

Everything you said. I don’t remember the last time I have laughed so hard watching every episode of a drama. One of my favourite things is the quips and deadpan expressions from both leads’ main servants. Comedy gold.

I completely agree, I caught up with the episodes today and I’m hooked! I can’t wait until qian qian realises her own feelings for Han shao as she tries to make the second princess fall for him.

Yes to everything you said about the show and about rom-coms in general. After 5 episodes, I’m firmly on the Romance of Tiger and Rose train too, thanks to Dorotka’s review last Saturday.

I also love the meta elements of the screenwriter trying to navigate her own story. Chen Qian Qian’s interactions with her council of three storytellers are a hoot too.

    7
    1

ugh don’t know why my last post was flagged with an “inappropriate word”…anyway, I was saying it’s hilarious how the council complained why she had to over-complicate her story and her admitting she had to add an extra character because she wrote herself into a corner and had to move the plot along haha

I’m loving this drama too – like you said, the comedy here is golden. In each and every episode, there is something funny and humorous that I can’t help but laugh, which is kind of amazing (In the current world we live in, to be able to laugh is a blessing) and the OTP is just too precious 💕💕💕

I\’m so confused re:CLOY ep 9-10: if it was that simple to get her back, why wasn\’t it the first method he tried???

He didn’t have the power before to be moved to the border but once the higher ups knew who his dad was, they were willing to do whatever he wanted. I guess he just didn’t want to tell them who his dad was before.

    9
    1

Also, the deserter may have been real (?) triggering a real emergency and meaning more troops on duty along the border (?)

Then again, a fake deserter announcement would have been a clever first step in the plot.

      9
      1

The deserter was real as was the emergency swap. JH was clever to take advantage of it.

They found SeRi the last day of their turn in the DMZ, they had to come back and change with another company, that’s why they tried other things, because they were not supposed to go back to the DMZ in three months. But things changed with the deserter as and the coronel knowing the connections of Cap. Ri.

This drama is not your typical “saeguk”; it’s more like a family drama where the family is royal. There’s humor, tension, drama, everything!

Ming Dynasty, currently with ok sub on YouTube up until ep 8 (later eps have automated subs that they’re slowly trying to correct). If youre in Asia use dimsum.my which is a legal streaming service. If you know how to do bootleg soft subs subscene has dimsum’s sub (you’ll have to download the raw eps).

Could EY not explain the premise every episode 😕 I\’m beginning to think the drama writer has no faith in watchers. I wish the sageuk story was a full drama by itself!

1
2

hmm..I don’t view it as the show explaining the premise. We all guessed it ages ago, but more of it slowly showing us exactly what went down, confirming our thoughts or fully formulating threads it only hinted at, earlier.

    2
    1

No I mean literally repeating “we’re in a comic therefore abc”, not explaining the new plot points, but simply repeating every single ep the things that have been explained/expositioned/shown before. Like excessive flashbacks, except in words.

Extraordinary You: finally got some time to type up something about this drama. I\’ve been really enjoying it – Kim Hye Yoon is a revelation (sad that I can\’t finish Sky Castle, it\’s just too stressful!) And of course Lee Jae Wook!! Puppy needs to work a bit on varying his scowling face 😛 but he\’s been so good otherwise!! Tender moments (however rare) are tender, and when he\’s being a jerk he\’s being a real jerk, with charisma. But here comes my problem with the drama: can we please, please, get Baek Kyung\’s backstory now? -_- it\’s 5 episodes too late now to redeem him. It makes me sad knowing that webtoon Baek Kyung (the actual webtoon, not the in-drama webtoon) is so much more layered and so much less of an a*hole. Webtoon BK is most often indifferent to Dan Oh; he doesn\’t really shout at her or constantly dismiss her rudely. Their relationship is super interesting because- like Dan Oh said (in the webtoon), whether by choice or not, Baek Kyung HAS been the only one by her side throughout her life. When Baek Kyung gains awareness, he also becomes aware of his feelings for Dan Oh, and on top of that comes to like her Shadow personality. He doesn\’t actively provoke Haru (besides some snide comments here and there), and actually partners with Haru to save Dan Oh. I honestly don\’t understand why all of this interesting development is taken away from us. Maybe because compared to webtoon Haru, drama Haru has a lot more development and personality? Must we give up one character development for another? 🙁 Writer-nim, why can\’t we have it all?

[Rant incoming] Taking a break from squeeing over Seol Jihwan, I just wanted to do a PSA that how WWW portrays tech companies is really not how it works. Ok that\’s like saying the drama doctors are not real doctors (duh!), but hear me out! I was so excited when I saw the first episode – the way Tammy explained the search engine business, the way she did \”internal user research\” with Ellie, everything stays quite close to the reality that I know (I work in a big tech company as a researcher/strategist). And it\’s thrilling! Hearing business talks that makes sense! (side-eyeing you, Meteor Garden and your \”AI platform to sell squid sauce\”)

But then episode 2 onward they just decided to throw it all out of the window. Jenny was introduced as a developer and what did she do (besides hacking some info that one time?)? Why is the team all marketing? Where\’s the Interaction Designer (the person who maps out how the app/website should respond to the user behaviors)? Where\’s the researcher (Ellie could have been it!)? They\’re basically Product Managers running around without any research or design expertise! I always wonder why novel writers can do so much research, shadowing the people they\’re gonna write about, and usually get it mostly right, but drama writers never manage to do so?
