I WANTED TO WRITE THIS WITH THE POST BUT ACCIDENTALLY PRESSED SEND, NOW I CAN’T EDIT DUE TO SOME GLITCH…
There are not many pop singers in India, playback singers are much more famous & we’ve had our own legendary singers with voice of gold throughout Bollywood history.
So, the singers don’t need to be an all rounder in voice, looks & dancing skills, the popular ones nowadays are with captivating voice (although recently the annoying party songs with the catchy tune & not much content are getting fame, I still prefer the ones with quality singers)
My personal favorite being Mohit Chauhan. While Arjit Singh has also honey like voice.

    I wonder whom @ObsessedMuch , @greenfields & other Indian beanies like…. 😯

Oh this is so nice! Thanks for putting it up. And it’s so much fun to learn this about a fellow Indian beanie – what do like in addition to Kdramas?

      I’m a Rehman fan through and through. As mainstream and as old fashioned as you could get. ๐Ÿ˜€ Kailash Kher is a close second favorite (“Allah ke bande”/”Toota toota ek parinda” – possibly my ONE all time favorite song). But I’m more of a western rock person – RHCP, Pearl Jam, Green Day, et al. No K-pop in my life. ^^;

Agreed with you about quality singers over the present trend of annoying party songs. Eeks – when an uber driver or autowallah plays Yo Yo Honey Singh, my internal curse meter jumps about 10 levels.

Rehman is epic, I have so much respect for him, he’s such a talented musician & makes us all proud if him.
I remember kailash kher’s album coming out with hit songs such a ‘Allah kr bande’ (very inspirational song) & ‘deewani’ which I liked a tad bit more because it was romantic ๐Ÿ˜‰

I feel like I could answer an essay to your question of what I like other than kdramas ๐Ÿ˜€
But to keep it short, for western music I like Coldplay very very much. And for visual enjoyment I like, wait for it…..Taylor swift lol XD while my opinion about her music varies but most of her vids are good to look at so I check them out once in a while. ๐Ÿ˜›
I remember I once had 21 guns of green day in my phone then one friend listened to it & next thing I know, it went viral in my class hehe.
Apart from that I like western classical music a lot, but I have very limited knowledge.

Idk whether to encourage you to give kpop a try or not cuz its a maze! I can never tell the idols apart because they keep changing their style & hair color so many times!

And, in addition to all these I like manga & anime too, which, I’m damn sure, is very rare for any beanie here. ๐Ÿ˜›

        2
        2

About ‘Deewani’ – yes! It’s so romantic! I love it.😍 And somehow Hindi is a more potent language to me – I can’t curse in Hindi at all because the words seem so string, but the same curse words in English mean little to me. Same with romantic music ^^

LOL about the Green Day story. Is it okay to ask – how old are you?

Oo I love anime and manga as well. That’s how I got into all this some five years ago – moved from there to Jdorama and finally Kdrama. Err… Is it okay to say this? I was a massive BL fan at one point. 😂 But my all time favourite manga is probably the very violent seinen ‘Threads of Time’. What do you like??

          1
          2

Its totally ok to ask, I turned 25 this August. (It’s difficult to forget this age when according to my mom I’m on a dangerous threshold of becoming older without getting married lol , she’s very worried XD )

And saying jdorama just makes you sound like an experienced fan, only the selected few know how to pronounce this Japanese style ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’m glad you love manga & anime too.
I’m not a BL fan but I do come across them sometimes & whether I read them or not depends on my *ahem* mood ๐Ÿ˜› Btw, manhwa’s featuring BL are very stunning right…I mean that’s what I feel. ๐Ÿ˜‰

My favorite genres are romance & slice of life so my favorite manga/anime so far is Nodame Cantabile.
Plus I’m currently following like a gazillion mangas lol.

            For both you & @obsessedmuch
its true that Hindi curse words hit much worse than English ones.
I find the English curse words to be simply in trend, people seem to use them to do the “swag” & look cool , like saying f*** in every sentence or so seems to be in vogue; So much, that it sounds like a regular word now…

            1
            0

This thread is amazing! I missed so much conversation!! @obsessedmuch & @irishrah & @meera17817 (nice to meet you! :))

I was on a date ladies – a journalist seven years older than me. But there’s a reason he’s 34 and single – he chooses to be. Whereas I am also facing immense pressure on the marriage front. So it might not be the right time to casually “date” men.

@fatcat007 -thanks about the jdorama! I speak Japanese (basic – JLPT N5, for fun) so I should be able to get this much right!! ๐Ÿ˜€

I have completely stopped reading manga though. My life is all Kdramas these days. I haven’t seen anything after Baahubali 2, so it’s been a while. What are you reading now? Anything good?

          2
          1

Good luck for the future of you date ๐Ÿ™‚ hope everything turns out well
This is the best way I can say it because I’m a unicorn (never been in love, never dated anyone lol. Don’t tell nobody though, its an embarrassing secret ๐Ÿ˜› )

My Japanese vocab consists of a handful of words courtesy of subbed animes lol. Basic stuff like arigato, Ohio etc…

I can’t even keep track of Indian movies anymore…was English medium before or after bahuballi 2 I wonder? Whatever the case, its the last movie I’ve seen. All of us Indian beanies are so saturated with kdramas we don’t have the time(or heart) for anything else ๐Ÿ˜›

Lastly, I’m following just SO many mangas rn but can’t think of any good one to recommend to you. Probably cuz they are not relatable anymore….
Still, maybe ReLife might interest you. Give it a try…

            2
            0

Oh I was thinking of posting this one sometime back but I think I chose a movie song instead!

Is it weird to say that I don’t really have any favourites in Hindi music industry.. or maybe put it another way- I fall in love with every soulful song! Arijit is brilliant but I sing along more happily with all the 90s and 2000s songs! I just know their lyrics without having to memorize them! I guess growing up in that era would do that to you! I also like classical songs! Obviously Shaan and Sonu Nigam become automatic must- listens cuz they have been singing since I was born! I can sing along to 60s and 70s classics too! *do I sound like an old person* *hamare zamaane ke gaane gaane hote the, ab to bas shor hota hai* *yup, I think 27 is the new 67! ๐Ÿ˜›

But then kdramas happened, and all my time was spent in the k-world and I don’t keep up with Indian music any more. I might hear the songs by chance, love them but won’t listen to them again! And well, now I am into kpop on top of it all! Time hi nahi hai ๐Ÿ˜›

I canโ€™t curse in Hindi at all because the words seem so string, but the same curse words in English mean little to me.

Same man! I might not mind saying F**k a lot but I can’t even think of it’s Hindi substitutes! It just sounds very crude!

        3
        6

I think all of us are 90s kids here & totally memorized all of those 90s songs by heart! ๐Ÿ˜€
You don’t sound like an old person at all, 60s & 70s era songs were classy which can never be reproduced or made again, the songs & the singers were legit gold. My personal favorite being Kishore Kumar, his voice is therapy, never heard a more melodious voice than his ๐Ÿ™‚

          2
          1

Hehehe yup! Kishore Kumar’s voice was/is brilliant!

This thread is looking like a Indian beanie meet and I wish @irishrah was here too to give her 2 cents on it! ๐Ÿ˜€

            Also,

Itโ€™s difficult to forget this age when according to my mom Iโ€™m on a dangerous threshold of becoming older without getting married lol , sheโ€™s very worried

LMAO.. I have crossed that dangerous threshold and survived it! ๐Ÿ˜€

            1
            0

To our generation age is just a number…..(unless we need to compare it with our oppas which can be painful at times lol)

But to my middle class slightly old fashioned parents, I’m already a grandma by next year. They don’t bother me always, but do have their weekly panic attacks about me “shadi ki umar ho gayi h…ladka dhoondna padega” etc etc…. XD

I need to find this @irishrah person to join our talk ๐Ÿ˜›

          2
          1

Hahhaha.. poor you! My parents don’t say that but the extended family has started making some noise and with the wedding season upon us, I bet I will be on the receiving end of a lot of comments ๐Ÿ˜›

            0
            0

Aaah…..the extended family members…..they need a trophy for being the “most concerned about that distant relative’s cousin’s kid’s marriage” lol.
I swear we are the number one priority of our relatives & neighbours & basically anyone who are not our parents. XD

Don’t mean to diss them, some concerns are genuine but still can be overwhelming.
Good for you that you didn’t face it, I was fine until I turned 25 & suddenly an unheard siren went off in everyone’s head in my family lol.

          2
          3

“But then kdramas happened, and all my time was spent in the k-world and I donโ€™t keep up with Indian music any more. I might hear the songs by chance, love them but wonโ€™t listen to them again!” LMAO – so mee!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

Eeks about the arranged marriage business. I commiserate with you and @fatcat007. Except that there’s immense pressure upon my head already, even from the parental units. T__T But I can’t see men as men at all anymore. All my Oppas have ruined me. T__T

          2
          2

Ikr nobody compares to our galant oppas …
Why can’t they just break the 4th dimension like in W & come sweep us off our feet…. TT.TT

Aww.. me & obsessedmuch are 27 too !

“Cant see men as men at all anymore” .. hahahaha! have they all begun to like potential grooms with data & their specs sheet on the side?! ๐Ÿ˜›

This is my fav spoof on that aspect of groom searching! https://youtu.be/O9bv6U6EDak?t=2m13s

hahah! I’m glad that u are finally interested in anime/manga.. but u really need to start with SkipBeat.. and NOT BL !! you may actually get scarred for life if u start with some random popular BL’s… !! Hahahaha

Emma & Carcaptor Sakura were soo aewsome! Did u ever catch Princess tutu ? there was this other one about angels.. cant remember the name though..

          1
          2

I remember card captor sakura & UFO baby & some princess anime being played in Sony, wayyy before animax aired on our Indian TV.
Which reminds me….have any of you seen tele tubbies?? Lmao…that was awesome XD

            1
            0

Hahhaha.. I did promise you that I will start my manga journey with Skip Beat! I haven’t forgotten! ๐Ÿ˜›

I don’t think I watched Princess Tutu but the name sounds so cute!

            1
            0

This is exactly ME… each n every word of it.
I can fall for any new soulful song and listen it on repeat forever, but nowdays my play list is ful of ksongs, last year was of Moon Lover ost and this yeat The King Loves. And now its Shark.
I love old hindi songs… Mukesh my all time favorite singer and i had a huge collection of his songs (on cassettes… era before smartphones or cds). Other than that Shaan’s songs makes my heart go all awww so love his voice too ( Musu musu hasi and Tanha dil all time fav of him).

          2

Aaahh!! I lovvee this thread!! Such a happy indian beanie meet!! and helloo! I remember u from the festerfaster article.. we spazzed about random hindi tv shows.. more spazz incoming from me!!

Arijit Singh is <3 and so is sonu nigam and so is rehman.. and OMG Allah ke bandhe was on repeat on my "reliance rangeela – first colour mobile" for soo long.. and guuys –
you are forgetting INDIAN OCEAN – dooba dooba and all!! basically we 90's kids seem to be carbon copied.. was Kuch Kuch Hota Hai your-to-dies-for movie too?!?1 Like I totally wanted to marry in that ghagra Kajol was wearing.. which now when u look at is such soo lame!! *wiping tears of laughter*

and gosh.. i was a total sucker for manga/anime and also found my way to kdrama from jap adaptations of manga to kdrama adaptations & then got stuck at kdrama ! I have dropped most manga post all the classic ones naruto/bleach/godly bells coming to an end & the wait every week is soo painful.. plan to catch up soon though. The only one I still religiously read as published is SkipBeat !! I louuvee that manga!
(I've read pretty much all the top 20-30 manga of every genre.. and BL is definitely nothing to be ashamed of.. good BL is <3 like Yuri on Ice.. Haha i recently spammed @sicarius on a lot of the manga i read)

ok so this post is getting crazily long.. but yayy! Hi again to you all! Thanks @obsessedmuch for linking me to this thread!

And ahahahahahahahhaaha about the marriage age conv.. neVER gets old in the Indian context!!! along with "beta.. khana banana seekh lo warna teri saas ko kya muh dikhaoongi?"

        I'm from Hyd ๐Ÿ™‚

        2
        3

Hi @irishrah thanks for joining the talk, the more the better yay!
I’m sure when you mention the spazz about random Hindi TV shows it’s meant for the other beanies(?) That or I’ve forgotten because of my goldfish memory (truly sorry if I did!)

Thank you @obsessedmuch for directing her here, wow you guys are so active (*admiring heart shaped eyes*)

“reliance rangeela โ€“ first colour mobile” lmao the good old days….laughing so hard right now.
Koi mil gaya from kuch kuch hota was perfectly memorized, the steps remember & played in every school function haha. Basically every kajol-srk movie was watched, the romantic songs played on doordarshan (the stone age guys) etc.
I even remember the Dhara jalebi ad omg you guys I’m so done XD nostalgia hitting me so hard

Omg another manga fan I can’t believe it. And to top it of, you are keeping up with Skip beat (bows in respect). I like that manga, but the updates literally kill me, so I’m sure one day (in 50 years or so) it will conclude & I’ll binge read it ๐Ÿ˜›

And BL is totally fine by me too, but to read it(or any umm sexy themed manga) I need to be in the *ahem* mood ๐Ÿ˜›

Hyd….the king city for biryanis, I’ve never been there but all of my friends who live there praise it so much it just makes me long for it ๐Ÿ˜€

          2
          5

Hahahha.. I just had to go invite her because this was such and interesting thread (funny you say that cuz I have actually limited my DB presence! ๐Ÿ˜› I used to be on here ALL the time! Yes, this is me being less active! And Rainbow Unicorn has cut down on the DB craze too! It’s all part of our DB de-addiction plans!)

SRK and Kajol are love. I still watch DDLJ whenever it comes on TV. It will probably never get old for us! Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was another favourite but it was just last week that I didn’t watch it when it was coming on TV… It looked stupid to me and I suddenly questioned whether I was forgetting “my roots” aka 90s Bollywood because of Kdramas! But nops, caught a bit of Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and it was still awesome! KKHH is the only SRK-Kajol 90s movie that I grew out of! ๐Ÿ˜›

But you know, I hated Kajol’s lehenga even then. Preferred her tomboy look quite a lot and I was never a fan of that colour!

Aww… dhara jalebi ad was super cute and I think I am gonna go on Youtube and watch some old ads!

And all your talk about manga and anime (and BL- which I didn’t even know was a thing!) is making me curious! We did have Animax back as kids and I used to watch Cardcaptor Sakura on it.. and there was this show called ‘Emma’ on it which I really liked though I don’t think if it would be considered an anime too….

Anyway, off to sleep now! This thread is so nice! Thanks for posting this vid and basically having a mini-Indian beanie meet! Now I am thinking of other Indian beanies who could have been here like @darcylove @dramaninja! But I haven’t seen them on here lately!

            3
            0

I’ll tell you a secret, srk-kajol being my all time favorite Bollywood couple, I haven’t watched ddlj XD okay, now that I’ve dropped the bomb lemme clarify, I’ve seen it, just not properly, but in installments. Haha. I always shock people by telling them I haven’t seen ddlj & sholay (I get the stink eye from most people lol)

And animax was the reason I got hooked to anime’s & then mangas & my fandom hasn’t died since them. You liked Emma?? ๐Ÿ™‚ it was a beautiful anime, one of my all time favorite ๐Ÿ™‚
(BL is just one of those things in the otaku world which is a black hole for manga lovers beware while approaching it, it might permanently suck you in. jk;-) )

And I’m so glad I posted this vid today, didn’t expect it to turn into such a wonderful beanie meet ๐Ÿ™‚
            Gn. ๐Ÿ™‚

P.s. there’s an Indian beanie called @darcylove ?? O.O ya’ll my soulmates I swear! I need to have a heart to heart conversation with her about our undying love for Mr.Darcy XD

            1
            0

Oh god! DDLJ is my favourite but I know many who haven’t watched it! So no stinky eyes from me ๐Ÿ™‚

I love Pride and Prejudice! I have a rusty old copy (my dad’s- almost 40+ yr old) which I have read way too many times and refuse to buy a new one! I might like Elizabeth more than Darcy but he was an interesting character too! And well, he is so iconic! Like half the kdrama leads-heck any romantic story’s lead- could be based on him!

            1
            0

Lizzy and Darcy are the foundation of any modern day romantic story which involves love-hate relationship, its why people still love them ๐Ÿ™‚

            2
            0

Agreed! I have always maintained that Pride&Prejudice is the first line of ChickLits or amazing romances.. ! Gosh I have re-read that book so many times.. even more times than HP.. Even was mandatory reading for all my boyfriends.. only the hubby managed to avoid reading it.. and his proposal was decidedly unromantic.. heck now that I think about it he never ever asked me out on a date or to even marry me.. we sort of just fell into both!
“How ardently I love and admire you” *swoon*

            0

@irishrah this is an amazing Indian beanie meet!! ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ Yay! Another BL reader. I seriously was obsessed at one point. It’s my black hole of shame. The kala dhabba on my past.

Oh Indian Ocean is so good. I haven’t heard anything of their’s for a while now, come to think of it. It’s been nothing but Kdramas for me this past year :p Now I feel like giving them a listen.

Hyderabad is so nice. I have a couple of close/old friends there, whom I’ve visited occasionally. ๐Ÿ˜€ Have done the Hyderabad tourist thing.

          2

BL is a manga reader’s pride , don’t be ashamed of it, you just need the proper people(like us) to appreciate you taste hee hee.

            0
            0

Hahaha! BL is well BL.. full confession though.. I wasnt much of a fan of BL till I found some actually tastefully done stuff like Yuri on Ice or some of the Thai Lakorns.. cuz BL can sometimes just be an excuse for terrible plots with soft p*rn.. so haha! i get ur kala dhabba bit.. wouldnt ever come clean on having followed any BL on any other forum but here!

            0
            0

@irishrah & @fatcat007you’re right about BL often descending into soft porn 🙈 For good or for bad, I began with some amazingly good BL and was hooked! Hahaha

            1
            0

@irishrah haha, I still don’t think BL is a kala dhabba , I don’t prefer it but its just so popular among manga readers! Like I said, you need the correct people to appreciate your tastes & a fellow manga reader definitely appreciates it ๐Ÿ˜‰

Duuude this thread is proper 90s hardhitting nostalgia!! Those jalebi ads.. and Koi mil gaya… Kyaaaa!! Thanks to you my hubby (yes – I recently got married & don’t have to put up with the aunties snidely commenting on my unmarried status anymore.. but now new annoyances have begun.. u can guess what – for Indians the natural nagging post marriage is about ______ *sigh* you can never escape the nagging ladies – the scale just gets larger & larger!)

to get back to Koi mil gaya.. thanks to this post my hubby had to put up with a very annoying high excitement screetchy performance of koi mil gaya complete with the air guitar moves & imaginary balloon popping and stuff.. and duh he was the stand in for srk!

Nothing like singing in exuberance to all those 90s songs.. gosh now I’m yearning for Falguni Pathak.. and those other songs.. *chaandni raat hogi taaron ki barsaat hogi..* hahahaha!

I’m a fan of coldplay/metallica etc but you just cant emo scream along with them the way u can with these ‘golden’ growing up songs or BackstreetBoys !! Lol

        4
        2

Oh congratulations!!! Loool – you’d think the aunties would leave you alone for a few months at least *rolls eyes*

AAh..I misss the Backstreet boys days. Such nice music!! ^^; You’re so right about not being able fully sing along and emote to present music.

          Congratulaions!! ๐Ÿ™‚
The aunties never stop with their nagging huh.

dancing to koi mil gaya again must be so much fun ๐Ÿ˜€
I always remember the last scene of the song when kajol just walks away cuz she’s so badly friendzoned by srk XD

And how did I forget our beloved Phalguni pathak & Backstreet boys!!
That doll with umbrella that I wanted so badly from “maine payal hai chankayi” ๐Ÿ˜›
And my class used to play “everybody rock your body” so many times during any school functions that we finally got told off by our principal for being so noisy all the time lol. (girls convent school, just imagine the screams lol)

          1
          1

Hahaha! I can totally imagine the screaming..and all the dancing in bus corridors?!

how did i forget my obsession with the blue dress in falguni pathak’s “chudi jo kanki” ?! Lol

and not to mention crying with Kajol during the whole ‘tujhe yaad na meri aayi’ song..!

I think I may have broke the replay button on this video. Also at least 1000 of those views? my fault. He is my favorite from this generation of singers. I’m counting Sonu Nigam as a previous generation gem.
