Beanie level: Rooftop room dweller

Wan’er, why is your mother someone like her? At the beginning, I thought the Emperor and Chen Pingping are the dangerous ones. But they are only dangerous in a normal way. She is… not. Her amused laughter still send shivers down my spine.

And to think that I’ve unquestioningly trusted her spy all along.

The only drawback of this drama is the fact that the more eps I saw, the less scenes I can convert to GIFs for fear of spoilers. Because every little word and gesture matters here.

Thankfully, even in the middle of huge confrontation between 4 or so different sides in which everyone forced Fan Xian to stand in the eye of the storm, we still get this kind of funny convo. I couldn’t help chuckling at the Emperor’s nonchalant attitude that perfectly matched Fan Xian’s indifferent stance.

And it’s all kind of hilarious that the one person who managed to make Fan Xian flustered was straightforward Consort Shu, the second prince’s mother who was just as eccentric as her son. No death threat nor deadly challenge unfazed him, and yet he couldn’t even maintain his poker face in front of this woman’s frank and quick change of topics.

Am I the only one who can’t help but liking the Second Prince’s quirkiness? He might be taken a liking to Fan Xian’s lack of deference towards any of the authority figures (himself included), but it’s also equally clear that he befriended Fan Xian because it’s advantageous to his reach for power. In the middle of the Capital’s complicated web of intrigues, his frankness about the political struggle he joined in was refreshing. And from Fan Xian’s reaction, I’m sure I’m not the only one who appreciate it.

The emperor terrified me exactly because of how in control he was of his emotions. He was no short-tempered and impulsive ruler, even when things didnโ€™t go as he planned. And to be honest, his composure couldnโ€™t help but made me think that he was probably the one behind all those unexpected results. He was cunning and manipulative, and it worried me that he seemed fascinated by Fan Xianโ€™s unpredictability.

Itโ€™s been quite long since the last time I was this fascinated by a non-gray character. Fan Xian was sharp, kind, just, but also utterly unpredictable. Itโ€™s often difficult to comprehend his plan because his mind has already jumped several steps ahead and he acted with motivations that so unheard of in that era. At first, I only pegged it as the result of the modern values he believed in, but I realized thatโ€™s not always the case. Iโ€™m still not sure if it was because he had been dying once in his previous life that he could be this unfazed when confronted with assassination attempt.

Or probably itโ€™s simply because he was such a troll that he could act like this in a very serious situation. Sometimes, itโ€™s almost like he treated this world and his existence here as something not quite real. And as usual with him, it was both soberingly sad and absurdly funny to come to that realization.

For a guy who only ever wanted to live a simple and happy life, he attracted tons of attention from many different people with much higher standing. It probably started because of the unwanted position the emperor put him in. But each and every choice he took to stop himself from being used as a pawn for power only enamored these people even more. I mean, it takes guts to boldly refuse to kneel in front of imperial decree like this (and the fact that he did that so casually still left me slack-jawed). And those important people must know that Fan Xian was either very stupid or very dangerous to try to \”force\” the Emperorโ€™s hand regarding that matter.

Good question to raise as there’s an important reason why these higher-up people are going easy on him. If he was someone different than what he is now, he would have been killed eons ago :))

I’ve noticed he is very blasรฉ towards the emperor or really any authority. He very rarely bows to anyone, which makes me think it’s because of his modern sensibilities. It certainly makes him a unique and fun character 😆

I’m heading to my moms for the weekend to continue watching this with her and my little brother (we are up to ep 19). We are all quite liking it 😁

I\’ve never been this happy that Fan Xian\’s plan completely backfired on him. He and Lin Wan\’er have the cutest romance, complete with odd first meeting and a series of hilarious misunderstandings afterwards.

It\’s so satisfying to watch them finally met each other properly without any borrowed identity and smiling broadly at each other like this.

It amazed me how fine this drama balanced the humor and the complicated power struggle storyline. This scene in particular, is my favorite example. I knew far too well that they played a dangerous game here, changing barbed flattery and veiled threats while smiling politely. And yet I couldn’t help cackling at the whole “intimidation technique” the emperor used. Poor old eunuch Hou.

I didn\’t expect to find myself liking the Fan family members this early on. Sure, some of them hate Fan Xian\’s very existence itself. But compared to the real threat from the royal family, those hate only seemed petty and annoying at worst. Besides, what can I do with them being the provider of good laughs throughout the drama? 🤷🤷

Grandma Fan is a caring but strong old woman. Little sister Fan Ruoruo is my favorite. I just love the way she adore her big brother and willing to help him with anything despite them not being able to grow up together.

Fan Sizhe is growing on me, and it amused me to no end how much fun Fan Xian is having by outsmarting his little brother\’s petty schemes. Every. Single. Time.

The stepmom isn\’t as bad as I thought she would be and her brand of \”truce\” with Fan Xian is just as amusing as her son\’s trickery. Having him saving her and Sizhe by insulting her son\’s intelligence? Pfftt…

And while I reckoned that the father\’s cold treatment and his plan to use Fan Xian as pawn for power should be something I hate, Fan Xian\’s lack of care for that made me feel that it\’s not something I need to be so hung up on.

I just hope that I don\’t have to eat my words anytime soon. After all, I\’m only 6 eps in and I know how drastic things can change in one or two eps.

How can such a short teaser be cute, sad, and funny all at the same time? And really, I shouldnโ€™t expected less from Lee Kyu-hyung, because he has managed to find another rare character to play.

I thought this drama is about a single father whose late wife enters his life again as a ghost. But for him to already remarry and lead a happy life with his new family when his first wife suddenly reappear? Complicated is an understatement. And since this comes from the writer of โ€œGo Back Coupleโ€ who gave us self-aware second leads before, I especially anticipated a compelling development between Cha Yoo-ri (Kim Tae-hee) and Oh Min-jung (Go Bo-gyeol). Please donโ€™t let me down, writer-nim.

I wish we spent a bit more times with little Fan Xian because he is simply awesome. I already miss his sassy remarks towards both of his teachers.

This poster looks both sunny and sad at the same time. And I certainly didn’t expect Go Bo-gyeol’s character to be there alongside our lovely ghost’s little family.

The Untamed: the wonder of fan fiction

I\’m not the biggest fan of fan fiction. Because most often than not, the characters felt really OOC, or the stories reminded me there\’s a valid reason why I wanted to imagine myself what happened in the periods that the original story didn\’t touch. Which is why, despite my love for The Untamed and Mo Dao Zu Shi, I firmly stayed away from those numerous fan fictions.

That is, until I stumbled into Zelda\’s twitter when I searched for good fanarts and thoroughly fell in love with her spin-off comics. Who knows that Mo Dao Zu Shi story told from the weapon spirit\’s perspective would be an even more beautiful and heart breaking experience? And I certainly didn\’t expect myself to be this invested in Mo Xuan Yu\’s story (that underworld adventure is so cute and a much-deserved happiness for this often forgotten boy).

Anyway, I need some happy pills after all those heart wrenching stories and unexpected surprise in the latest eps of the audio drama. Thankfully there\’s this lovely compilations of Wangi and Wuxian holding hands throughout The Untamed. 😊😊

The Untamed: Golden Core

Both the novel and the drama never really delves into the details of core removal process. We\’ve only told briefly (alongside Lan Wangji) that it was painful and that the donor has to stay awake throughout the long process. And then, the Audio Drama season 3 episode 14 happened, and I felt like being stabbed along with Wei Wuxian.

I am… not okay. 😭😭😭

*crying in the corner*
*cursing my past self for wanting to know the detail of that particular story*

Wow – such a poignant image. It’s been so hard for many of us to let go. I wonder how it was with these two. Thank goodness we have all those BTS and other videos to keep seeing them together.

If you are referring to the actors, te social media is full of their activities (albeit separately) Recently the Untamed cast had a fanmeet in Nanjing China. Just yesterday, Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo appeared in a chinese Singles Day show. Although they performed separately, die hard shippers still managed to make something out of it.

you talking about the stage performance video, where yibo lost his hat?

ha ha.. i was laughing os hard..

the two stages are miles apart but it was trending that XZ waited 10 min to see yibo’s performance (i mean he had to right he was next performer)

and that yibo was looking at the other stage instead of audience (far apart yet eyes only for you)

BUT yibo’s dance is DAMN SEXY

          4
          2

Yeah, the dance was awesome. After I post the video, I realised the official video didn’t do justice to his dance. The fancams were actually better – you could see so much energy and swag he puts into it. There’s something about the way he moves, uses his body and his face when he dances that is absolutely electrifying.

You know the thing about the hat? It got me thinking Yibo is superb at setting trends on social media. He gets a lot more out of an appearance on a show, a performance and just about anything. I don’t know if I am reading too much into him or is he really that awesome?

my answer is he is that awesome
and reason i say this is based on his younger day videos.. he learns, and adapts, even if he doesn’t mean it

he is very sharp and very confident of himself.. you can see that.. he never fails at anything and so competitive.. such people want to be best at what they do.. and if that is the case, such people tend to be very perceptive of the demand of the stakeholders and environment

I know Xiao Zhan has said in an interview (I can’t remember which though) that The Untamed has been the hardest drama to let go of. I’m sure it is full of so many amazing memories. If it’s hard for us to let go I bet it would be even harder for them. Especially since they seemed to have made so many amazing friends on set (especially Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo).

Oh my, this is so beautiful!

This show does things to me. I never understood why people get overly emotional over a drama, a fictitious story-its characters and relationships. Now, I can’t explain why I am still obsessing over a drama which I’ve watched twice and stopping myself from watching again.

I will remember 2019 as an awesome year for my drama watching because of this show.

The Untamed: A beautifully ordinary ending

In dramaland (and even in fantasy novel realm), I\’m no stranger for choppy, rant-inducing ending. Creating a decent ending seemed to be a skill that not many writer possessed. Given the epic journey in The Untamed, I almost resigned myself for another disappointing ending. Turned out, miracle did happen!

While the drama ending is sweet and relieving, the novel ending is more slice-of-life in a sense. Life and love goes on, and people find happiness in the most mundane thing. With the intense life-and-death stakes WangXian have to face throughout the novel, I think it\’s a very apt and nice ending that left me content.

Facing the wind, Wei WuXian squinted at Lan WangJiโ€™s silhouette. As he criss-crossed his legs, he shockingly found that he could somehow manage to balance himself in such an odd position on the back of Lilโ€™ Apple.
It was only something trivial, yet he looked as if he just discovered a new and interesting occurrence. He couldnโ€™t hold himself back from sharing this with Lan WangJi, calling, โ€œLan Zhan, look at me, look at me now!โ€
Just like before, Wei WuXian called his name with a grin, and he looked over as well.
From then on, he could never move his eyes away again.

The Untamed: A little display of support

Wangji\’s public confession at Koi Tower is probably one of the favorite romantic and heartfelt scene in this drama, but personally I love this little, blink-and-you-miss-it display of support during the last confrontation with Jin Guangyao. By this point, I know that most people have already forgotten the slander and judgment they threw toward Wuxian years ago. He was now back as another unique hero in their midst, and they worshipped him anew after the second siege at the Burial Ground where he basically saved their unworthy a**. But deep down, I don\’t think it\’s easy for them to forget how powerful and potentially dangerous Wuxian was. I\’m sure they never stopped being wary of him making another unexpected choices.

In this particular scene, it was the first time in a long while that Wuxian was finally reunited with both his Cheng Qing flute and his legendary Tiger Seal. And after everyone witnessed how powerful he was with his whistle alone (even with his lacerated throat), it\’s probably to be expected how alarmed they were when Wuxian started to make his move. Apparently, not even the non-judgmental and very understanding Lan Xichen was immune to that. He sharply called out Wuxian\’s name, a mix of warning and pleading in his voice. And you can just see how Wuxian sighed internally at this lack of belief.

But then Wangji shook his head toward his brother. Because he was confident in Wuxian\’s ability to control the infamous spiritual weapons. Because now he understood Wuxian\’s principle and moral very clearly. He calmly nodded his support toward Wuxian. And that little gesture made Wuxian\’s smile bloomed: relief and gratitude mixed with a bit of wonder because this guy still steadfastly stood by his side no matter what.
