Extraordinary You.

1. The sudden drop is quality in Episode 13. O_O What went wrong, Show? I think its got a lot to do with the editing – which felt rushed and choppy. Scenes felt incomplete, and this actually proved to be the case with the Dohwa-Juda scene, since the show dropped it in one half, and picked it up randomly in the second half.

2. I’ve said this earlier, but as good and swoon-worthy as Rowoon is, he still clearly needs experience doing the heavy scenes, and this ep proved it. Hye-yoon outclassed him by miles, it was so weird to see their serious scenes, because although Rowoon tried very hard, it wasn’t quite as natural as Hye-yoon’s seriousness.

3. As for Kyung, I frankly don’t like his character too much, can we not get more of Do-hwa and Ju-da instead? Do we really need this conflict with Kyung getting in the way, the writer as the cruel god dictating their world is enough.

4. Why are so many plot lines being introduced at the end? Juda’s confession to Dohwa, and Jin Michae’s love story being at the top of my list. It def seems like there is too much ground still left to cover, and four episodes aren’t enough. Possibly explains the choppy editing this episode.

5. Flower is somehow even more compelling than Secret lol.

6. I STILL love this show. 12 episodes of amazing-ness means I really enjoyed this episode too despite my complaints. I watched all of it without skipping and with genuine interest to see where it goes. Hope ep 14 is back to being awesome.

I agree. The editing was so choppy that many scenes just didn’t make sense. DO just standing and looking dazed whilst Haru and BK are fighting 😩😩😩 It’s like her opinion doesn’t matter let’s see which guy is going to push her to his side first and more often. Very disappointing 😩

    4
    1

RIGHT? At that moment I was so ready for her to either 1. roll her eyes and walk away from both of them or 2. roll her eyes, grab Haru’s hand and drag him away from Kyung – BUT NOPE. The damn scene just cut right there! Another example of the choppy editing – it ended weirdly, mid-tension as a cliff hanger – fine! But then open the next episode with that scene!!!!!

      8
      1

I was so angry how this scene was done. And yeah they left it in the middle of it and then acted like nothing happened. DO didn’t have anything to say about BK confession. She was like: I’m coming back to my weird Haru land and keep BK close enough but not too far away

        3
        0

Dan Oh… she lets herself be the object of the boys’ fights and it drives me crazy.

Ju Da and Do Hwa are my current OTP and it’s really to not see their relationship deepen in earlier episodes. As in Ju Da being aware sooner and fight for her own story.

Jinmichae’s lover was murdered the fastest way ever. The show can’t expect me to care for their story if it just throws a scene like that.

    7
    1

I’m not caught up with these eps yet. I sometimes wonder if the writer is meaning to be so realistic with Kyung and his anger issues?

    2
    1

I have always thought that is writernim’s intention with BK’s character all along. Maybe it’s because he was played by LJW who was just fresh off being cute puppy in WWW, that most of us refuse to believe BK is a jerk.

      1
      2

I’ve been thinking of him as a jerk from the very get go haha – but honestly its way too realistic. Or Lee Jae-wook is doing it too well, either way I’m a bit 🤬

        1
        1

I would almost like to see his character in a show that deals with how he heals from his childhood and behaviors.

          2
          0

I’ve known people from traumatic childhood’s that have anger issues. They have people that they love and can be loyal, caring and sensitive. But they also lose those people and burn those bridges because it can be like walking on eggshells around them, they can be a bit paranoid, and selfish.

        2
        0

At this point, I am just praying that writernim does not pull a “Lost” on us (i.e. they don’t really have answers to all these questions).

It’s based on a manhwa, and those are normally better. But I’m not amused.

/Self-pity post. I’m saying this on DB because I really can’t say this anywhere else./
I’m way too soft hearted and fair minded to be a litigating lawyer. What I learned from arguments today is that yup – this is not the field for me. Ruthlessly shifting the blame, not letting your stupid feelings and own values get in the way.

If you do decide to go on in this path, then I’m sending you lots of good vibes and encouragement, so you can persevere and succeed!

If you do decide to stop, then I’m sending you lots of good luck vibes to change path. Having a job that is not a match with what you desire/can do is tough and will be stressful when stuck with it.

    Either way, fighting !!!

Thank you halfmoon. I’ve been working on shifting out for the past year now – it may take another few months to have confirmation, or it may take another year if things don’t work out this year; but I’m doing it.

Being too soft hearted is a bliss and curse at the same time because that’s not how the world works. I still admire you for hanging in there and making sure you do your part. I have recently come to the realization that I’m a little coward and way too soft hearted and not bold enough for writing or the media or working on the set (basically what I’ve studied) so I’m in a dud currently. But i remember how you wrote an article where you even tried to fulfill your dream of writing. So even though I know DB acts as an outlet for you, I like how you always take courageous steps for yourself, either its staying, leaving or trying new things. I hope you settle well in what you do next greenfields.

Thank you wapz. I actually read your reply a few days ago but I was too upset with myself to respond. Your words were very comforting. Please don’t sell yourself short either – confidence is a muscle that must be exercised over time or it rots. Don’t be scared, and go seize an opportunity you always wanted to explore!

#ExtraordinaryYou, Ep 11 Comments contd…

The last scene – where it was made absolutely clear that Haru and Danoh are indeed reusing lines and re-enacting scenes from the stage in “Flower”, here in the shadow in “Secret” – was heartbreaking. Rowoon acted that scene beautifully, the tears in his eyes even though he smiled happily, silently, conveyed everything it needed to.

Perhaps as manhwa characters, they have no free will. Everything they say, do and think has been allowed to them by the writer in another story. Even Mr. Squid said it, whatever scenes on the Stage that they changed, were also drawn that way by the writer. In other words, it may be that they *think* they’re changing scenes, but in reality, there’s no such thing. It’s not possible.

This raises painful existential questions about our reality too. Do we or do we not have free will? I’ve never been big on the idea – we’re born with constraints on our will: our personalities, our health, our families, the opportunities available thanks to our economic circumstances, education, even our gender and the colour of our skin dictates what we’re taught, what we internalize and how “free” our will is. The laws of physics, the perceived linear flow of time.

At most, we are free to try and make ourselves feel better about things – which is what Danoh seems to be doing now. I’m sad to see her this way, but I get it. I’d love it if the show could end on a hopeful note but suddenly I don’t see how.

But my point is, isn’t vocabulary and emotional understanding for each character limited to what they have heard EVER..

meaning, their own dialogues and what other characters speak..

that really limits and increases frequency of one may utter?

    1
    1

And that’s why it’s so heartbreaking.

      0
      1

not really.. true for us too.. because that also leaves the opportunity of these folks uttering those dialogues on their own.. out of their own volition

That show is so frustrating. How will the show even end. What even is going on? I want answers.

    2
    2

I kind of agree with this, but I don’t think ‘frustrating’ is the word I would use. I adore this show and I found this today’s episode and last Thursday’s episode very beautiful. But I have this itching desire to get answers, to find out how things will end, and to see Haru and Dan-oh (hopefully) get a happily ever after.

      4

Like Maq, I’m not frustrated with the pace of the show. Only that I wish I’d waited to binge it later! 😊

      3

A few points (was going to post on my fan wall, but I think you’ve said a lot of what I wanted to say, so I just want to amplify a few things you’ve written if that’s okay):

1.) I actually think there is still an even mix between Dan-oh’s perspective and Haru’s perspective. It just seems like there is more from Haru’s side because before we were only getting Dan-oh’s perspective, whereas now we’re getting a good bit from Haru’s perspective.

I also agree that the writing gives two plausible reasons for increasing inclusion of Haru’s perspective. The first, as you noted, is because the force pushing for change has shifted from Dan-oh to Haru. the second is the fact that Haru has lingering memories from Flower. Since the last little bit of the drama seems to be focused on the connection between Flower and Secret, it makes sense that we get more from Haru’s perspective because he’s better placed to reveal or at least contextualize the connection.

2.) I am curious about Kyung’s arc too. I’m not sure what its point is, other than creating a measure of symmetry (as far as we know, in Flower, Haru’s character was quietly in love with Dan-oh and suffered while Kyung was with her; what we’re seeing now is a reversal of that dynamic).

3.) I commented about this last week, but this entire story is pregnant with a sense of tragedy. I agree with you about the ending; in all likelihood, this show will end sadly.

4.) I just wanted to specifically echo your comment about Rowoon. He’s been amazing for a while, but he was especially great in episode 10 and in today’s episode.

5.) I don’t know how to feel about the reuse of lines. One aspect of it is, as you say, heartbreaking. The fact that even this measure of self-definition and freedom might be illusory is a very difficult thought for these characters and for viewers (or, well, it was a difficult thought for me). At various points we’ve seen these characters struggling with accepting the limits of their freedom in a world that is completely beholden to the whims of a (frankly kind of cruel) chaka. But, if these characters really are reusing lines, then the sense of futility becomes overwhelming.

On the other hand, I think there is some hope. Some of what has been said in the shadows is a repetition of what was said in Flower. But there are differences. For one thing, we see in this episode that Haru had a line which was spoken by Dan-oh in Flower. Additionally, Dan-oh’s gratitude about the stars in this episode is directed at Haru rather than Kyung. This, to me, suggests a measure of freedom after all. And I think this was part of what made Rowoon’s crying scene at the end important imo. He knows something is awry, but he’s happy that she’s happy and he’s happy he’s the one receiving her love this this time.

    6
    1

You are awesome! And I really agree with so much of this. I’ll comment first on pt 1. my only issue is that it’s a deliberate decision on part of the show’s writers / manhwa writer to have Haru remember right? Danoh could have remembered it instead, so I don’t count that as a mitigating factor for the shift in story telling perspective. You’re right though – it only recently shifted. Has been Daonoh for quite a while.

      3. “Pregnant with a sense of tragedy” made me cry. And yes, is very apt.

      5. I have hope too! It’s such a sweet show at the end of the day. Surely it won’t become a tragedy??

#ExtraordinaryYou Ep 11.
What I don’t like is how the narrator of the story/the perspective we’re getting, is now Haru’s and not Danoh’s. I enjoyed the show much more when it came from Danoh’s pov, but this is common thing in Kdramas & love stories in general – the first half begins with the woman’s perspective, but later once they’re in a relationship, the man takes over.

What I do appreciate though, is how this has been executed in Extraordinary You. It’s a gradual shift that within the story makes sense. After Haru’s disappearance, Danoh (and Dohwa) have been too scared to try and change the story. And now Haru is taking over the task – I like the general idea that sometimes its ok to sit back, be afraid, because someone else is there to take over the reins.

But because the shift of the dominant storytelling perspective is such a common thing in romance, I’m a bit 🙁 about it.

What I do like about the show – cute HaruXDanoh moments. There’s no way boys are as gentle as he is, its a myth, a TV myth; but that’s why I watch TV. 🙂

I also really appreciate that I’m able to clearly see these characters are teenagers. They seem helpless and powerless after a point, much like they need the guidance of an adult to navigate this strange situation. They’re also self-centered – that Haru & Danoh don’t ever really ask Dohwa about his “romance”, that they haven’t asked Jin Michae all the right questions from the very get go – how did you remember, when did you start to remember, how did you understand stage etc – is telling.

LASTLY, a brief comment on story developments: its clear Juda and Kyung’s younger brother are self aware. No doubt now. I love this Juda. 😀

Somehow Kyung’s whole arc feels unnecessary to me – there’s already so much going on with two people in love despite a story they can’t control; the sinking realization that even now the lines Danoh says in the shadow are lines she said on the stage in “Flower” * – there’s so much to explore there. I’m looking forward to seeing how the show ties in Kyung’s arc as an antagonist, in with this, but so far, I don’t think the show needed to go there.

*Rowoon did so well in that scene. This whole show in fact, but especially these last few episodes, he’s been doing a fantastic job. He switches convincingly between Kyung’s Haru and Danoh’s Haru; and a third Haru that exists in “Flower”.

12
8

I agree. Ro woon has been amazing so far. My boi keeps proving that he’s not just a pretty face time and again! I am sure all the Fantasys are super proud cause I can’t even begin to describe how proud I am!
Anyways I kept hoping for an ost sung by sf9 or even just Rowoon(cause damn, his voice is the reason I fell for him in the first place) but i don’t think it’s happening ughh I am sad!

    1
    1

Seriously! I’m so impressed with him. And he’s super funny on variety, plus so incredibly charming. The guy was born to be an idol – I hope he goes on to do well for I would love to watch him take on different roles and tasks over the years.

      2
      1

The storytelling has been unfolding from Haru’s point of view because he’s the one who remembers what happened in Flower, not Dan-oh. Didn’t we also see Dried Squid Fairy’s memories from Flower? For some reason, they remember Flower and she does not.

    3
    1

Yeah but it didn’t have to move to him. She could have been the one to remember. If knowledge is power, then Danoh has been sidelined by the show’s writers for Haru & Kyung.

So @minminfan convinced me with a (carefully curated?) set of recommendations – Day6 are amazing. This music is on another level? What sorcery is this? Here’s one I really love:

Their whole discography is amazing and extensive for a 4 year old group ^^ I’m so glad you like them:)

    3
    1

Yeah! I’d heard a few songs earlier but only liked a couple so I didn’t look too deep. But suddenly today I’ve heard many that I LOVE.

      1
      1

    day6 really doesn’t have any bad songs…

    5
    1

FINALLY! God, they are good. I put this exact song up on my wall around the New Year it affected me so profoundly. I had just fallen into the Day6 hole at that point and couldn’t get enough of them. Seeing them in concert this past year was surreal as I’ve only been a fan for <1 year. This song encapsulates all my teenaged angst and my ultimate fears about getting older and losing everyone I know and love. Gah, can you see my tears right now? I love how the chorus cuts through the verses with the “Why am I alone??!!” I want to see this curated list! I have my favorites as well if you’d like another list. 😉

    3
    2

Haha let me pull out the list if I can. So lucky you saw them live. I’m in the wrong country.

      0
      0

I’ve been a fan for just over a month but I want to see them live SO BADLY! I’m extremely envious of everyone who’s had the chance to!

The playlist I made is here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4y8lUoRuJ7Xo62XrLwt60y
It seemed like she liked their soft-rock side more so I put my favourites from that side of them at the top ^^ (also, no Japanese releases cause they’re not on Spotify in my country)

      2
      3

When I saw them, Jae jumped off stage and ran into the auditorium and stopped just 6 ft from where I was seated. I was elated to see him so close. My husband was there and just made fun of me the rest of the night. I don’t think he’s ever seen me so star-struck! And I’ve seen some celebrities. These guys are so sincere and such fun performers. Jae probably burns 1000 calories each concert. He’s a riot.

        2
        0

That’s a great playlist! May I put together some new stuff for you all??? @saturtledaisy wasn’t as impressed with their new album, but I quite like it. I’ll put some of the Japanese ones on there too. So soft rock, eh? Like indi-rock? I’m more 70’s-80’s rock, punk, and metal. I also like indi-rock. I had a whole conversation (with a patient, no less) about how Nirvana invented the soft/indi-rock to metal/grunge sound and you can hear some of that in Day6’s new album. That’s why I like them. They incorporate all these genres and make it still sound like Day6.

        2
        2

I would have been on super fangirl mode as well!! Ahhh!!

And, exactly! I love how every song has that *signature* Day6 stamp to it! That’s why I really liked the new album as well! They tried out stuff like a Bossanova groove but it didn’t feel like they were just going along trying to be trendy.
Interesting that you mention Nirvana. I’m not sure they’re a direct influence for them, but it seems like they’re influenced by bands that were in turn influenced by Nirvana so maybe it filters down that way 🤔

          2
          1

i was plenty impressed! its been on replay ever since it came out.

i just dont like reggae much sadly and i always warm up to slower songs later, so theres about three or four songs out of eleven im not dying to replay for now.

          2
          1

like. im impressed at their SKILL but if theyre going to release every genre ever in one album i cant love all songs equally. i hope youngks got the bananas out of his system now

i am curious though – which songs did you like/not like?

        1
        1

What Sadhana points out above. Soft rock – I loved you, I need someone, I would, etc :D.
I’ve not heard any of these earlier. It seems from Sadhana’s categorisation, that I’d heard their punk rock earlier, and I definitely still don’t think much of that.

they used to always perform you were beautiful and i like you at concerts and festivals and they all BREAK ME especially live. im glad i got to hear i liked you and letting go live before they disappeared off the setlist

day6 is the best at getting dramatic

Extraordinary You, Ep 9 (post #2)

I have to say that I have my complaints with the fact that Haru & Baek Kyung are fighting over Danoh, often when she\’s in the scene – it\’ll be Haru that stands up for her, not Danoh herself. 🙄 When he\’s not around she stands up for herself just fine.

Listen I get it. I find that I also tend to do this around guys I like – rely on them unnecessarily. It\’s a component of my personality I hate. Why does that particular feeling turn me into such a Candy? My real personality is pretty straightforward. I feel like I\’m Danoh off stage & on stage when I\’m on my own vs with a guy I like.

Not that I\’ve been with a guy I like in years. The crush on Min Yoongi aside, it\’s been … ages.

This has digressed.
Okay, bye.

19

Did you just say “crush on Min Yoongi”. Crush? GF, say it isn’t so! The wedding plans are so advanced. There are draft scripts and everything.

😣😣 but, but…he’s a millionaire superstar in South Korea & I don’t even make the tax bracket as a rookie attorney here in India. If you were to try and write this love story, even all of dramaland’s tropes may not be enough to bring the OTP together.

      2
      4

I still think giving him legal trouble in India and him being forced to live with you while you defend him is a solid Plan A. If the logistics seem a bit difficult, stalking seems quite culturally acceptable in Korea. If I win the lottery this weekend, we’ll make The Business of Bahu a reality.

        6

😂😂 I’m loving these plans. I’m a bit skeptical of this reliance on fate so I hope you’re fated to win the lottery. That way you’ll be rich (muahajaha) & we can do something about The Business of Bahu. But frankly, if we’re relying on fate, I’d like to win the lottery as well (muahahahaha)

Pfft, all we need is a meet cute with an idol running away from something while wearing a face mask, while an adorable Indian fan girl is minding her own business, headphones on, listening to her favorite music (you know who), and a little wee crash that employs some Korean gravity.

        5
        1

I’m not sure I count as adorable. Consider me more Seo Hyun-jin than Kim So-hyun? But overall, I’m down for this. Except – he’d crash into me, I’d fall down & he’d continue running while I curse internally.

Sounds like the perfect recipe for a kdrama to me 😉

I can see the successful man – poor girl trope in there yes. It’s also a noona romance. But nope.

Um…..rich hero and working class heroine…..yeah pretty farfetched for a romcom.

I say you learn korean and try to become a manager for a kpop group. Meet him backstage at one of the music shows.

        3
        1

😂 this would be a Netflix drama given its international nature. Not to mention that I’m not white, but of a skin colour that is looked down upon by South Korean society. The potential issues of racism would definitely add much gravity & depth to our simple rom com. @leetennant

I have to admit I was not thinking of that. I’m not sure if it is something I’ve seen a kdrama adress?

I was thinking of his scary fans. No offense to army, but some seem intense. What if you met Suga but fell in love with the second lead? Someone a little older….

@bcampbell1662 – I’d even say full offense to army. Fans will go after the workplace & families of girls BTS members are revealed to be dating. Did you see what happened with the tattooist JK was rumoured to be dating? Scary.

BUT also – I have to tell you picked the perfect second lead. I’m a Baby/Babyz too & adore Yongguk. It doesn’t help that he’s a bit older too – same year as me – equally charming & less famous.

Also, I’m enjoying this conversation too much. 🤣 So to reiterate the original point. Even all of Kdrama’s tropes can’t bring this OTP together.

Also Kdramas don’t feature international romances? Japanese dramas are better at that – I’ve seen two. One even had Kim Tae-hee as the female lead.

@leetennant I’ll take that guest house. Come stay with me, we’ll offer Korean tourists a choice of the Indian or Australian experience – it’ll be a winner, I’m sure of it.

I think the difference is that Dan-oh is a bit more dismissive of Baek-kyung and is less likely to make a big deal of Kyung’s abuse when Haru isn’t around. She definitely stands up for herself, but her tendency is to just chalk up his BS to his rude personality and move on with her life. By contrast, I think Haru takes Kyung’s abuse more seriously than even Dan-oh does.

Extraordinary You, Ep 9.
I love how simple the explanation is – that the writer reused characters, storyline, dialogue, even their names, over and over again until the characters became self aware. It\’s something many beanies had guessed already and it fits the story.

I\’m curious about what this great tragedy is. My guess is that in Flower, Baek Kyung or Haru or even Danoh (but less likely her) killed one of the others in the Shadow/on the side while a Stage was going on. Whatever happens during a Stage is irreversible right? Like when Do-hwa dragged Ju-da away at Nam-joo\’s birthday. Or that Baek Kyung\’s big announcement wasn\’t erased off memories the way Dan-oh smashing the vase in art class, ep 2, was.

So perhaps one of the characters died & with that, the story unravelled, and the writer just ended it unfinished, instead of giving everyone a happy ending & lives they could continue beyond the manhwa. Perhaps that closure means they are now free from the manhwa to live their lives.

On second thought Dan-oh smashing the vase in art class, ep 2, was to do with Haru’s lack of interference. Or it would have been a permanent change on stage. 🤔

Someone was killed for sure! Haru’s scar is an important aspect of the plot. I don’t think Dan oh killed anyone. It’s either Haru (but it looked like he was holding the sword with his bare hands while trying to protect someone?) Or Baek kyung. I’d bet on Kyung cause he, well, has issues. Real issues. I can’t stand the fight over Dan Oh as well(tho all those scenes end with Haru walking off like a boss) cause for me, the love triangle doesn’t exist at all.
I am amazed at how this drama still makes me excited for the next EPs even after 8eps already cause mostly by this time with other dramas, I keep yawning at my screen and watch just for the sake for watching! That’s how extraordinary “Extraordinary You” is, haha!

      3
      1

Right?! I also think Baek Kyung did the killing -and it was Danoh he killed by accident. Or maybe Haru killed Baek Kyung. Can’t wait to learn more.

Yes to the extraordinary power of this drama.

        1
        0

I always wondered how did the writer name him Haru when it was the name given by Dan Oh. Glad to know to have this answered now – this writer is recycling not only the stories but even their names lol

But it makes me wonder why writer decided to add Haru as an extra….. it seems to me Baek Kyung – Haru – Dan Oh were the leads in flower……… I think secret is a spin off of flower.. where Baek Kyung gets a love line with Dan Oh… since maybe in Flower the love line was Haru and Dan Oh… and then I guess writer’s lightbulb went off and decided to get Haru in Secret too! Siigh. Theories theories theories

    2
    2

May be Haru died in Flower and hence the writer wanted to write a new work without the nasty love triangle. And somehow Haru made it inside the script. How. And why.

      3
      1

In the end tropey love triangle wins! 🤓 I think about the readers of this writer’s works and imagine how they must have felt seeing characters they fell in love with die… and writer continues to write off characters😪

        1
        0

But but I want for Haru & Danoh to love each other because they love each other, not because the writer intended it to be that way in the past story. >_<
      Hahaha theories theories theories indeed.

      3
      2

I know!! I would have preferred a plot where Dan Oh falls for him because it was her decision to love him and not because in another lifetime, they were together. In the end, she’s tied to the writer’s plot💔

        3
        1

Fated to be is a trope I can’t deal with!! If they go there I will be damn pissed.

THIS IS MY BIGGEST QUALM UGH IF THEY END UP BEING THE CANON LEADS OF FLOWER I WILL BE SO DISAPPOINTED.

I want the drama screenwriters to make a statement. How you can’t always subject your female leads to the stupid treatment by the male leads, and how they start to break out of this nonsensical mould to fall for a guy that cares and respects for them. Because irl no one can put up with shitty treatment like that

Somehow the notion of Danoh and Haru falling in love off stage is more romantic. Please don’t make them the onstage couple of Flower God I’m going to be SO SAD.

        1
        1

Exactly! The notion of Danon & Haru falling in love offstage is incredibly romantic. I’d love for IT to be the storyline.

          1
          0

Even if someone died off stage the writer can bring them back on stage.
So am not sure why the writer would leave it unfinished?
What gives them the power to change the stage?????

Given Kyung’s outburst it’s an accident waiting to happen.

    1
    1

I haven’t watched this week’s episodes yet but the writer’s lack of creativity is extraordinary lol. I was starting to think Secret was the work of a passionate fan creating a Flower highschool AU.

That’d be an interesting twist that they’re self aware because the writer left their previous story unfinished. I hope the real explanation is as interesting as all the fan theories 😃

    1
    1

Oops read that wrong, so the self awareness came from the writer reusing everything so many times

      1
      1

YUP 😀 Still applies though – I also hope the real explanation is as interesting as all the fan theories. ^^

Because the time from now till about mid-Feb is quite crucial for me (for various reasons), I\’m making a conscious decision to drop most dramas. But the one I can\’t drop is Extraordinary You. 😅 I\’m ridiculously invested & care loads about the characters. Also, Kim Rowoon is ridiculously handsome & his visuals may just be a little bit illegal (a \’96 liner okay? 23 years old. I can drool a little?). Finally, it\’s ridiculous how much I\’m enjoying this trope-y story despite the wrist grabs.

I need writing to make sense in the world in which the drama is set, not in the context of the real world, and lately dramaland had offered tons of shows that satisfied me immensely – from Search WWW to Hotel Del Luna to Be Melodramatic & now Extraordinary You. I count 2019 as one of my favorite drama years. ^^

8

You’re right. Kim Ro Woon’s visual is unbelievable! And everythinggggggg you said about 2019 dramaland! Bessssst

    1
    1

EY is the best now! All the clips for tonight episode are so sweet 😀

    2
    1

I feel okay about drooling over Rowoon. ’96 line means he’s only one year younger than me, and although he looks like he’s 18 if you judge him only based on his face, his giant-ness makes it hard to see him as being too young.

I also think he’s a pretty good actor, which is a nice change. The other “legendary” visual, Cha Eunwoo, is nice to look at (he’s not my taste, but only unreasonably people would deny that he’s objectively good-looking) but not the most skilled actor.

    1
    1

😅 you’re five years younger than me so I question my tendency to drool over rowoon, but 23 is adult enough? And I’m still in my 20s. It’s okay *pats self*

I have to agree with you about Cha Eunwoo. I understand he’s the Korean version of ideal handsome but he’s really not my style at all either. It doesn’t help that his acting is very sub par. Side roles are better until he learns enough to be able to carry a lead role. Rowoon is indeed showing better depth – I wouldn’t say Rowoon is all that good either, but in this high school, shoujo manhwa role, he’s def perfect for the lead.

      1
      1

I do think Rowoon tries to hard in some of the scenes and it shows. When he was playing Haru the Amnesiac and tailing Kyung as Kyung’s lackey, his acting seemed a bit forced at times. But I think he’s pretty good overall and that he has a good deal of room for improvement. To me, he seems kind of like Junho (whom I also absolutely adore) in Memory.

        1
        1

Oh! I would also compare him to Junho. I’ve been thinking the same. He reminds me of Junho.

Yeah – I think in serious scenes such as the one at the end of ep 8, when Haru returned and they were in the middle of the road, you can see that Rowoon is still a rookie. There’s room for improvement. But re everything else – with Danoh, with Kyung etc he’s superb. And most importantly, he’s making our.hearts flutter. Which is what the male lead of such a show needs to do. Surprisingly I don’t think Cha Eunwoo would have been able to do it – so Rowoon is definitely a better actor. So much potential

Winner’s MV this time is unbelievably beautiful. YG left & they come out with this – looks like his creative direction wasn’t all that huh?

Additionally, for all the hype, Hoon’s nude scene is tasteful, artful & beautiful.

Ahh man this is my favorite MV till now! And YG is definitely not missed! Ppl really shouldn’t miss out on this art!

Yup! The focus wasn’t him being naked but the emotions he was conveying! Me the Hoony Stan did not even focus on his bare back but just teared up at all the overwhelming emotions!

One addition: I never know what their songs or videos are about. However, this one feels very raw and very anguished. I wonder if the turmoil at YG is part of the context from which this video takes its colour.

      2
      2

That’s a good thought. The turmoil at YG may have definitely played it’s part in this type of concept.

Definitely… While they are talking about breakup, but mefeels the MV is a lot more complicated and not just restricted to love relationships, but what they, specially Hoony went through as his name was dragged through mud as well even though he wasn’t actually involved. I also see just a general criticism of society and it’s ways. So man interpretations are possible!

Current Drama Status #73

Mon-Tues
The Tale of Nokdu Ep 7. That plot twist continues to blow my mind. Did NOT see that coming at all. 😶

Wed-Thurs
Extraordinary You. Ep 8. This show is a teenage fantasy come alive. Also, all the case are great and Kim Hye Yoon is particularly expectational. She\’s killing it as the overly expressive Dan-oh.

Fri
Pegasus Market. Ep 3. 20 mins. Aaaa I need to pick this up again! It\’s so funny, and one episode a week is too little! But hopefully that means filming is relaxed.

And Pegasus Market is only 12 episodes. There seems to be that one for the holiday transition and this is it.

It was very weird. The whole sequence.
    It felt very random too.
What the writers planning. I was hoping there are ‘triggers’ but now everything feels random. Hope am wrong.

    1
    1

Hmmm…So I’m not weirded out in that same manner. Jin Michae mentioned that Haru’s personality is now closer to what it was in Flower. My guess is that he disappeared momentarily as the writer started to come up with a set up for him, and is now back with that set up. Clearly we’re going to see more now, hopefully also of Flower. 😀

      3
      1

Wow I didn‘t think of this but it sounds logical. I just hope his original character isn‘t one going around telling off people for wrinkling his shirt. That was mean.

        2
        0

The character has been reset to fit in the writer’s story. But honestly, it was pretty fun to watch Haru being super friendly with Baek Kyung, they revisited the love triangle 😀

But yeah, to see Dan Oh so sad it was hard. Even Baek Kyung had a hard time to keep his cold face.

    2
    1

It WAS very funny. I also noticed Haru grabbed Baek Kyung by the wrist and dragged him away from Dan-oh. THAT reverse trope wrist grab was definitely funny.
