ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Today’s color is pink. When I started learning Korean, I thought pink was pink. Dramas used pink all the time! “Reach of Sincerity“ is a good example.

Let’s go back to K-pop. Many fandoms use pink. I like 투애니원 (2NE1) and 세븐틴 (SVT) the most. Let’s just talk about SVT. And yes, I know that SVT has two colors, pink and blue.

SVT is an awesome group! “SEVENTEEN is made up of 13 members, 3 units, and a team.” (Korea Now)

The hip-hop unit and vocal unit make the music. The performance unit makes the choreography. Woozi is one of the most important members of the group. He is the producer of the group. His nickname is “Jakdol” [(a combination of the words composer and idol)].

SVT has a comeback next week! It’s September 16th! I can’t wait!

@raonah, I was working on this for days an it nearly killed me. I’m sure I made a ton of mistakes, especially with my particles, but I just wanted to finish and publish it. Arhg!!! But I’m happy I’m done.

I hope I got the long sentences with the verbs turned into nouns correct. I will be especially glad if I did as I had to figure out how to do it for post.

오늘의 색은 분홍색이에요. 빨리 방주, 언제 한국어를 배우기 시작한 거, 분홍색을 핑크인 생각 했어요. 드라마들이 핑크를 항상 썼어요! “진심이 닿다”가 마땅한 예예요.

I think it is more common to use 색깔 than 색 when it is not at the end of a color word.

Not sure about 빨리 방주. That seems like something that would be said in English but I don’t think I’ve heard people say things like that in Korean. Maybe something like 잠깐만요 would be more natural?

언제 is the question word ‘when’ but it is not used to refer to a past point in time. Instead, for that you need to use the ending 때. You could say 시작 할 때부터 instead.

When you are saying what you thought, you need to use a quoting form. 분홍색이 핑크색이라고 생각했어.

케이팝 돌아가요. 많은 펜덤들이 분홍색을 써요. 투애니원 (2NE1)과 세븐틴(SVT)을 가장 좋아해요. SVT만에 대해 말하자. 그리고 네, SVT이 두 개 색 있는 거, 분홍색과 파란색, 알아요.

케이팝 돌아가요 also seems like a very English thing to say. In Korean, you could probably just say 케이팝은 to emphasize that you are talking about kpop now.

말하자 is banmal. You could say 말할게요 instead.

SVT은 멋있는 그룹이에요! “세븐틴은, 13 명의 멤버, 3 개의 유닛, 하나의 팀으로 형성되어있습니다.”
      👍👍

힙합 유닛과 보컬 유닛은 음악을 만들어요. 퍼포먼스 유닛은 안무를 만들어요. 우지는 그룹에 가장 중요한 멤버 중의 하나예요. 그룹의 제작자예요. 그 사람의 별명은 “작돌”이에요.

      What does 작돌 mean?

SVT은 다음주 컴백이 있어요! 09월 16일이에요! 기다릴 수 없어요!

In Korean, 기다릴 수 없어요 means you literally can’t wait (like you have an appointment that you need to get to so you can’t wait in line at Starbucks). Instead you should say ‘많이 기대돼요!’ which means ‘I’m really looking forward to it.’

Wow! You really wrote a lot!

        감사합니다!

Yup. I did write a lot and it took me a loooong time.

[1] The book I’m using has color listed as 색(깔). Usually anything in parenthesis is optional, like 공부(를) 하다. In addition, they had a few example sentences where they used 색 as a standalone word for color.

        e.g. 무슨 색을 좋아합니까?

That’s why I just used 색. Having said that, that’s just a text. Colloquial language might be different.

[2] Naver didn’t translate 빨리 방주 at all, but I stubbornly kept it. You are right. I’m thinking too much in English. I need to get more comfortable with the Korean language itself. I guess that will take time and experience. In the meantime, I should just use simpler sentences and expressions. Lord knows it will make my life easier.

[3] I haven’t come across the 때 ending yet. I will need to look into that. I hope I remember not to use 언제 like that in the future. Thx!

[4] I haven’t come across the quoting form either. I really was jumping the gun in this post.

[5] Re: 케이팝 돌아가요, agreed. I really was trying for too many English sounding sentences. You suggestion makes a lot of sense as the topic marker does a similar job.

[6] I only realized that 말하자 was banmal after the fact. A more polite ending would be 말합시다. It’s still not very formal because that is the nature of “let’s”, but I think it will work in this context. I can see why you would say 말할게요.

[7] Re” SVT은 멋있는 그룹이에요! “세븐틴은, 13 명의 멤버, 3 개의 유닛, 하나의 팀으로 형성되어있습니다.” Most of this sentence is a quotation taken from the interview. 🤣🤣🤣😭

[8] 작돌 is a combination of the words 작곡가 (composer) and 아이돌 (idol). It refers to artists like Woozi who both produce and perform. @08:57 of the interview. I mentioned it in the English translation but I should have also put it in the actual Korean piece.

[9] Re: 기다릴 수 없어요, thanks for letting me know. I need to remember that.

        Thanks again Leah!

핑크색 말하면서 생각이 났어. 진영이 핑크 색 잘 어울려 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

네. 진영이는 핑크 색을 잘 어울려요. 그리고 잭슨은 조황색 옷 입는 거 정말 좋아해요. 조황색을 자주 입어요. 잭슨의는 색깔 까만색인 가장 좋아하지만 저는 그남자의 색깔 조황색 가장 좋아한 게 생각해요.

          Orange is 주황색.
          맞아요. 잭슨 주황색 잘 어울려요.

So. Short story about orange. I passed my sentences through Naver. The first misspelling Naver translated as Orange. The second time the word came up, it translated as Yellow. I was like, wtf is going on here? Is Naver having a moment? And then I moved one…😅

You’re pretty dang badass for catching that btw. Thx!

            네. 잭슨 주황색 잘 어울려요.

So 어울리다 means both “to suit” or “to wear well”?

잘 어울려 basically means that two things look good together. It can even be used for couples too.

Your hard work always impresses me 😮
    많이 힘들게 봤어요!

I don’t think you would say 케이팝 돌아가요 in Korean. 케이팝으로 돌아가자면 많은 펜덤들이 분홍색을 써요. might fit better.

Like @raonah I hear 색 being less used as 색깔. There must be a certain rule to differentiate them but I don’t know 😅

      감사합니다!

My problem is that I’m trying to jump the gun a little and use stuff I don’t quite know yet. That and I’m trying to speak Korean like I speak English and that’s a really big problem. I need to understand the language better. This is actually highlights how putting something into a translator is not an effective means of communication no matter how accurate the translation is from the source content.

One of the books I’m learning from has color listed as 색(깔). Usually anything in parenthesis is optional. But, textbooks and colloquial language are two different things. I want to be good at the latter. 😂
