Hey Rabbit beanies! (although Idk if i can technically still be included in that category). I hear there\’s an app called Rave that works better than Rabbit and has the same features of rabbit. Should we give it a try?

The Secret Life of My Secretary is now over and I will miss it. It’s been such a long time since I’ve fallen in love with a kdrama romcom in its entirety. I usually cant follow through after episode 12 curse. (Omg i think my last COMPLETED romcom was Still 17). It was cheesy, tropey, cute and emotional in a heartwarming way. I loved it for all its faults. (Fish CPR 😂 and the lady killing herself for a fish. Omg It CANT take itself seriously.).
I like how they ended it. Min Ik will try out for presidency again when he feels more mature. And Dae Ju who has been supporting him gets to be lead.
Min Ik is happy and satisfied with Gal Hee. I loved the relationship between the two. There is no power dynamic. (If anything, Gal Hee has the upper hand). (I loved that little touch with Gal Hee getting annoyed at Min Ik for throwing stuff. Yes, couples aren’t perfect.) While the lie lasted long, i didn’t mind it. Had it finished earlier, im sure the drama would’ve been plotless and I would’ve dropped it.
Last comment: i love the last narrative they bring us. No min ik isn’t permanently cured, but when he DID see faces, he cherished it and would run to his girl. And the ring didn’t matter as long as they love each other (but she still had it).
(Also VP with her camera and Dae jus “awesome” is the RIGHT KINDS OF CRINGY)
This drama is a throwback to 2000 dramas in a good way. love the OST.

20
26

I’m so glad that he wasn’t miraculously cured. He didn’t go abroad for some surgery to cure him. A fish didn’t fall from the sky and hit his head in just the right spot to cure him. And they even avoided having her love cure him.

That last narrative telling us he runs to her whenever he sees faces is 1000x more romantic than any airport reunion scene showing a supposedly whole person. Bravo to the writer and director for finally giving us a positive story about living with a disability. (*squints at the drama that shall not be named)

    14
    5

Also to have KYK AND JKJ narrate that line at the same time makes it 10000x times more romantic. No Im not squealing. Oh god im 15 again.

      8
      0

@egads – you summed it up perfectly. The lies lasted as long as they needed to and the bottom line was that Min-ik was still himself even if he couldn’t see faces clearly.
This was a show that didn’t take itself too seriously (cue fish-cpr) but still knew how to drive a point home when he told the board of directors how not seeing faces clearly helped him get to know the people more clearly.
All around I LOVED it and am sad to see it end.
But these two – get a room already okay? all the sexual innuendoes were so much fun?
      *strong thighs- right*

This drama did so many things right. I will enjoy writing up about it.

      5
      1

100% yes to this. I was dreading the “here’s your reward cure from learning the valuable lesson this disability taught you” thing most dramas do. The way this show handled disabilities was a pleasant surprise. We need more of this.

      6
      0

loved that summerization.. its super romantic and real that how people in real life love and manage to live despite their hardships and disability.

      4
      0

this drama is perfect because of the four leads..

and veronica’s characters need special recognition..that character is extremely difficult to pull off.. anyone and everyone would have made it annoying, cringy or too childish

    6
    1

I need to see her again soon!!! What they did well was they kept the annoying angsts at a minimum. If this were another show, not only would have had the Gal her lie… but we would’ve gotten an annoying female lead, more annoying disapproving parents, love triangles, noble idiocy… and i dont think i would’ve been able to deal with that or love a show like that. Here, They kept the angst to only lying, and everything else was dealt with smoothly. Which, for some reason, made it believable (if we overlook fish CPR lol)

      0
      1

lol.. that museum fangirl lady also had minimal angst.. infact quite a few shows recently don’t have it.. but darn.. all of them turn unbearable by ep 12 if not earlier..

While i get what you are saying.. in my opinion, i still think it was the innocence and chemistry of these leads that did wonders… and by extension kudos to the director to be able to bring out this “flavour” in the series..

no where do i feel that things just happened that way, director was really going for this “pure” vibe

        1
        0

i loved all the life lessons this drama gave.. not just the last one but the one where GH’s mom comes and tells to “not to obsess abt whats lost but to cherish what you have” thats something we all forget in our daily life and stress abt one more thing…..
but I am so happy with everything in this drama… it made me content watching it till the last moment .

    2
    2

“it made me content watching it till the last moment”
I don’t remember the last drama that did that for me to be honest.

But then, I don’t remember what I had for dinner last night either. Wait, did I even eat dinner?

      4
      2

glad you feel the same.. and its so hard to get a drama which you fill *all full deep down at heart and soul* cause it gave you all the feelings you could hardly get otherwise… and this is one such drama…. GH’s whole family was the soul of this drama, like water sprinkles on a dried, ignored plant at home….. I am really so so happy that i picked it up….

i mean there’s water in your stomach— by the drama’s logic the fish could still be alive. it might have gotten facial prosopagnosia or a trauma tho. Don’t worry, his true will fix him. And now i feel uncomfortable.

Curious about the worst dramas that aired this year. Im talking about Rich Man Poor woman bad. Or About Time bad.
I might add I picked up a star on the street in that list. Or is that a 2018 drama?

1

Worst dramas according to who? Lol.
HMS and TCC both made me unbelievably mad and I rate them very lowly but to some people they’re probably not bad.

Possessed was rage-inducing. It was even more terrible because it was great for 6 episodes, good for the next 6 and then weird, followed by Black levels of awefulness for the final three. Also wins the price for most pot plants in one drama

So yea, it was bad plus I watched it for 16 hours.

    3
    3

Oh and did I mention that EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER dies in Possessed? Apart from one girl but she gets to wear an apron in the final episode.

Sigh. Need to stop ranting about it

What’s Possessed? Never heard of it *sips tea*

What’s even sadder is that it was probably the first show I live-watched this year after being burnt by FBS last year. I’m not going to tell @rusnicam about the plot, as they might be tempted and I think nobody should watch this show.

That said, I’m over it now and what does amuse me is that the writer’s score on AsiaWiki at the moment is 31 out of 100.

        2
        1

Hahaha excuse my sarcasm. I have watched Possessed, but like to pretend it doesn’t exist. I feel guilty about all the beanies I recommended it to pre-episode 13. I hope you all forgive me.

I picked up a star on the street – that was this year. Did anyone watch it? I heard it was just awful.

    1
    3

I saw this one! Story about a girl “murdering” a celebrity with her shoe. She hit his head with that. So she took him home, prayed for his soul, and lived with him, and all those times she didn’t even know he was breathing!

And she ended up kidnapping her neighbour too.

Yep. This kind of plot did exist.

honestly my mind is sort of blank on what I’ve watched this last year and whether it’s good or not

    2
    1

So I looked back on what’s aired this year, and I’ve watched The Crowned Clown, Reach of Sincerity, and Her Private Life, all of which I count as either overall meh dramas of 2019.

I need some good dramas that I will say I enjoyed when I look back on them.

      2
      1

I agree theyre pretty meh. I didnt finish them. I finished light in your eyes, loved fellow citizens but still have an ep to finish… finished beautiful world (slow but good), and am loving the secret life of my secretary for all its ridiculous tropy cute and stupidness. I just remember last year by this time we had EXTREME good shows and EXTREME bad ones but not so much this year.

        2
        1

Im looking for an easy watch something like the secret life of my secretary or fight my way. Tropes and clichés are welcome. No noona romances. Suggestions?

3
13

I like that you are welcoming all the tropes. Sometimes I think tropes get a bad rap.
This is a list I bookmarked because it has some shows listed that are new to me and have not seen pop up on these lists.
    https://www.soompi.com/article/1308236wpp/7-main-characters-that-exhibit-sweet-second-male-lead-qualities
The Japanese drama Everyone’s Getting Married was a short sweet easy watch.
Beating Again (Netflix title) is an od mish mash of tropes and genres, but
Jung Kyung-ho is beautiful and I liked the romance between our leads.

    2
    2

I feel like all the “easy watches” that I’ve seen and enjoyed, you’ve also already seen, Juice, so let me give my humble opinion that no one asked for on the list:

Well, Biscuit Teacher Star Candy should already be crossed off your list because it is a noona romance, but also, it’s a teacher/student romance and will just make you feel squicky all around. Well, it made me feel squicky. I’d recommend staying away… unless you’re into that kind of thing I guess I don’t know no judgement here (there is totally judgement here).

I Really Really Like You is one of the few dramas with an actual good character trajectory and maturation for the immature male lead, but only watch if you want to spend 50%+ of each episode watching the second male lead cry almost as much as a Park Shin-hye female lead, so much that he actually has to be hooked up to an IV (I’m not kidding) and he faints into the hero’s arms multiple times (I’m really not kidding) and also his whole plotline with the female lead goes on WAY too long and really what in the WORLD were these writers thinking literally no one wanted to watch that. The OTP is real cute though… but skip to the second half to avoid obnoxiousness. You know, if you edited this 34 episode drama down to 10 episodes by cutting out the useless sideplots, you might get a halfway decent drama.

      1
      3

Ha. I have vivid memories of skimming through all those tears. Ugh

        2
        1

The fact that the music goes from normal and upbeat during the OTP scenes to SUPER DRAMATIC SAD GUITAR SONG every time his face comes on screen is honestly hilarious.

          2
          1

ha. I’d forgotten that. I felt bad for him at first but they just beat it into the ground. When I think of that show the scenes that pop in my head are when they are riding a bus and she falls asleep (so trite, right?) but watching the tension in in his arms and hands. And when she FINALLY realizes all of his I Love Yous after finding the sheet of paper with all the diff. languages on it.

            2
            0

Haahahah i had a HUGE smile on my face for several reasons. 1) you took the time to write such a long reply to me (i missed you!) 2) i loveeed your sass and forgot it. (No judgement, but totally judgement HAHAA, oh god a teacher/student romance. Euw gosh no. 3) the crying of the male lead. I dont think i can sit/forward through that. And ive sat through worse.

        1
        1

SECOND male lead don’t get it twisted after the first half of the drama the actual male lead is funny and sweet and cute and ridiculous

I missed you too!!! You’re NEVER around anymore!!!! Come back to me!!!!

Awww thanks bev for taking the time to answer me! Ive only watched the girls generation 1979 out of the list you sent me and i enjoyed that drama. But reading the comments below, im afraid to venture into certain of those dramas listed. That being said, ive read several of your comments on DB in the past (im not creepy i swear) and i KNOW i always tend to agree with your opinions….. all this say thanks and oh gosh this comment is way too long.

      2
      1

I say go with the comments. I’ve watched one from that list and loved it, but Noona romance….so. And I totally want to watch Biscuit Teacher. 🤦‍♀️ Gong Yoo and either a Java Beans or Girl Friday favorite.
Also, I have a great capacity to leave critical thinking at the door and just go with the the story which you need for something like Beating Again…it is kind of nuts. Anyway, long post to say take any of my recs with a grain of salt.

I…. FREAKING LOVED the premiere of the angel drama with L and Shin Hye Sun (she plays leading roles sooo well. There\’s this relatable nature that she emits and she\’s so strong. love it).

and HPL is getting boring. the chemistry between the leads is no doubt sizzling… but we’ve hit the ep12 mark and everything is now predictable
(also dont hate me but I ship Eun Gi with the intern more than the 2nd female lead). This show will probably be dropped.

16
8

This is the comment I was waiting for and also one I resonate with (regards to HPL)

IM SO GLAD YOU LIKED ANGEL LOVE I wanted to start it but wanted a more solid opinion before I went for it. The PD has such a good track record I want it to be good for his sake

    4
    1

start it!!! I usually find premieres pretty bleh, but this one was SO solid. The cinematography, acting, and OSTs too! Im worried I liked it too much lol. Or maybe Im Shin Hye Sun biased cuz I LOVED her in Still 17.

      4
      1

Omg I’m so scared to have my hopes up but I think I will start tomorrow after the second episode then!!!!

I’m bored with HPL too. From the beginning I knew I was in it for the fangirling. Take that away and it’s not nearly as much fun.

    3
    2

for me it was more the aspect of «the build up towards the relationship». A few kisses after that and I get bored. the ep12 curse hits me hard.

      2
      0

Interestingly I think it’s more fun without the fangirling. Or well that’s not quite the right word… at least, I find the art stuff interesting. I find the fangirling amusing but, for lack of a better word “problematic”. However I would LOVE a full art nerdy art curating art history art drama. I would be in heaven lol

      9
      0

I am getting bored with HPL as well and I will tell you why, with all the growth and maturity with the couple, there is not one talk of sex. They talk about everything else. This chase crap has to stop. We are not stupid, we know adults have sex, pre marital and otherwise, and they engage and enjoy it.

    2
    1

I kinda like it when it’s implied. Otherwise, I feel dirty watching it. Especially if there’s not much of a plot (reminder: WWWSK ugh).
Don’t worry. Im pretty sure we’ll get a scene in ep15 or 16.

      1

Loving that they have so many romcoms airing at the same time right now.
Everyone is squealing over Put Your head on My shoulder or Her Private Life so I\’ll glaze over them (y’all better no if theres something atrociously cute airing i’m watching it)
But Alas, I’m here to fangirl (pun intended) over another show. Despite all my reason saying no, I’m freaking loving The Secret Life of My Secretary.

There. I said it.

Also, I’m on the fan wall after what seemed like an eternity. so hi to whoever reads this far.

I love to write. But over the past three months, I’ve seemed to have lost all inspiration and motivation. Is this writer’s block when I’m clearly an amateur? I lose confidence and patience so easily.

3
8

What do you like to write? Fiction? Non fiction? Poetry? Prose? I’m not a writer so I can’t help much but I think the best thing to do would be to not worry about it too much. I’m sure inspiration will come to you soon.

    1
    1

It used to be fiction… then it involved into non fiction and reflection pieces. So for reflection pieces to work, well in my case, it has to come from the heart. I’m hoping it does!

Ah I see! I suggested reading because I think the best writers are often those who read a lot. It’s not that they read for a purpose–they just love reading, what they learn through reading, and the language itself.

It’s good to just read around, within or outside the areas you’re writing in/ your usual areas of interest, to build knowledge and curiosity about people and things of all sorts.

Waikiki season 2 ep1:
Im glad they kept the same waikiki wonderland song!! But overall, the first episode was a bit weak compared to last season. I felt last seasons characters meshed together better. But they did get better with time, so it might be the same here. This episode felt like dumb and dumber but it got better as it went on. I like that they reused old jokes and referenced old characters. I have high hopes for this show.

5

But…. the baby concrpt was soooo key to last season. Something is missing. But ill be positive.

I’m not sure what to think of your review because I love Dumb and Dumber. 🙂 I’m starting this now!

I like dumb and dumber. But I need a stronger connection between dumb and dumber. And the singer felt a tad too grouchy (although i think in future episodes he’ll have some bonding moments with the others). But again it’s not bad.

I forgot who, but someone on DB mentioned trying I Picked Up a Celebrity on the Street, and I decided to give it a try due to the overwhelming ads of Viki I had on instagram. (Still ongoing watch from my behalf)
It’s quite messed up, but I’m gobbling it all up.
She FREAKING kidnapped him. and he’s an ASSHOLE. This couple DOES NOT WORK, and SHOULD NOT WORK.
She can be cute, and hard-working, but it’s not excusable.

But Sung Hoon is good-looking. And despite her faults, she’s ok to watch? (but oh gosh this is wrong on so many levels).
Forced living is one of my favorite tropes no matter the situation.

I’ve come to accept I like the oddest things.
So if you want something cheesy, and so-so-so wrong, (and some eye-candy) I’ve got the show for you.

3
15

I was thinking about starting that but I ended up starting Something in the Rain/Pretty Noona… (I didn’t watch it when it was airing and I’m only going to watch the first 8 eps) But now you’ve made me want to watch I picked up a Celebrity on the Street again. It looks so awful 😂

I’ve been debating whether this train wreck of a show will be just the right kind of train wreck or not. It could be right up my street if they get it right – especially if they’re critiquing fan culture and romantic tropes.

        1

Oh gosh- please don’t trust me. I’ve lowered my standards soo much. This doesn’t work and shouldn’t work. It’s just so wrong. Stop trying to justify the girl is right. She’s not. She IS NOT.
