Beanie level: Errand boy

Dear Beanies,
Let’s make a list of consistently-Kind-&-Caring-Good-Guys Male Leads! Socially Awkward Males Leads are ok too, as long as they’re openly caring, affectionate and supportive of their Leading Ladies throughout (most of) the show. Extra Brownie Points if he fell in love with her 1st. Unicorn bonus if the entire show was actually good too.

I’ll start with my current favs (by character names):
Ryan Gold – Her Private Life
Gu Wei Yi – Put Your Head on my Shoulder
Healer / Seo jung-Hoo – Healer
Dong Ha – Witch’s Romance
An Min-Hyuk – Strong Woman Do Bong-Soon
Joon Hyung – Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Ju
Wan – I Need Romance 3
Kim Bon – My Secret Terius
Boong Do – Queen In Hyun’s Man
Se Hee – Because This Is Our First
Su Ha – I Hear Your Voice
Min Seok – High School King of Savvy
Bong Sang-Pil – Lawless Lawyer
Seo Joon Hee – Something in the Rain
Dr. Ye – A Poem A Day
Kim Je-Hyeok – Prison Playbook
Gong Ji-Won – 20th Century Boy and Girl

What else you got?!
Let’s do this!

Ohh I like this exercise. Here are some more:

Go Dong-man – Fight My Way
    Kang Ho-gu – Ho-gu’s Love
    Bang Myung-soo – Ex-Girlfriend Club
Kim Yeol – Sassy Go Go
Enrique Geum – Flower Boy Next Door
    Gu Dae-young – Let’s Eat (all three)
Tsuzaki Hiramasa – We Married as a Job
    Choi Dal-po – Pinocchio
    Kang Ji-wook – Scent of a Woman
    Park Ri-Hwan – Bubblegum
    Shin Dong-wook – Soulmate
Sezaki Kouta – Clinic on the Sea
    Cha Hyun-oh – Twelve Nights
Li Da-ren – In Time With You
    Xaio Nai – Love O2O

How could I forget Go Dong-Man from Fight My Way!!! Yes! he waaaaas a caring and nice guy from Day 1!

      4
      1

You added the ones I was thinking of! 🤗 Especially Ho-Gu, Dong Man, and Enrique will always have such special places in my heart…

      1
      1

Same! They’re from some of my fave dramas too, and I love rewatching them because they’re all just such gooey sweet guys. I love that Ho-gu has no issue being a beta male, Go Dong-man is my favorite lovable meathead (possibly my favorite male lead?) and Que Geum is too cute for words.

        2
        2

Hogu is just so admiring of his girl, and then grows to become his best self for her. I melt.

I will never get tired of watching the just, straight up honest, sincere Dongman and his wonderful abs.

And I have written essays on Que Geum that I have never posted because they are far too sappy for the public…

          2
          0

The thing about Hogu and Dongman too is that they are regular guys just trying to make a living, and who have growth in their careers too as they pursue their dreams with support of their partners (and they don’t become super rich, but are able to take care of their families which is also their goal). They aren’t geniuses or rich or superpowered (unless DM’s abs count…), and (now including Enrique) they aren’t cold or sarcastic. They are warm hearted men who show their emotions and want to believe the best in others.

          … I’ll stop ranting now… good topic choice @kethysk 🤗

I don’t know if you’ve seen Ex-Girlfriend Club but all this also describes the male lead in that one too. One of my all time faves because it features female friendships heavily, and the romance is super sweet. Also, Byun Yo-han is absolutely adorable.

@snarkyjellyfish I haven’t seen it, but you just made a very convincing argument in its favor. I might have to watch it while I clean the house tomorrow ~

            1
            0

Definitely do it. It’s also only 12 eps because it was cut by 4 eps so there are bits of the end that feel rushed, but nothing too obvious and it doesn’t hurt the story at all. Also, excellent soundtrack.

😊 I’ll let you know how I like it ~

    3. Gu Wei Yi – Put Your Head on My Shoulder
    4. Ahn Min Hyuk – Strong Woman Do Bong Sook (sorry Min Hyuk for bumping you down. But Wei Yi is just… 😍😍 You’re still the King of honey dripping eyes.. so…)
    5. Yoon Na Moo – Come and Hug Me

      niiiice!
Wasn’t Kim Shin Hyuk a 2nd Lead though?

      1
      1

That’s why when I put down my first second-lead onto the list (Xiang Zi Yan from Taiwan’s “Murphy’s Law Of Love”), I was like…. “Do second leads count??” XDDDD

        2
        1

see, 2nd Leads are usually those nice guys, and we the audience are kinda baffled as to why the Leading lady doesn’t choose a nice guy who makes every effort to support and love her, and instead she picks the douchebag bad boy who needs a lot of growing up to do.
thus this list of Leading Nice Guys 🙂

Pure Gold. Ryan Gold.
Again, dear KDrama Writers, take note: the Rich Male Lead doesn’t HAVE to be an a**hole to be sexy and charming.

but i guess he still needs to be aloof and with a traumatic past that only a cheerful, loud spoken candy can cure

    4
    1

alas, a traumatic past seems to be a requirement to keep us mildly entertained. I don’t find him aloof, though. as a matter of fact, he seems to be veeeeery affectionate and direct about his feelings for his lady.

      3
      1

        because candy changed him..
you forget him in NY and judging others’ paintainings and bad mouthing ONE when he didn’t even know him (because now we know that he didn’t know him)

        its candy magic

        1
        1

I’ll take that over the many pure douchebags kdrama has made us care about.

LOL But growing up in a multi-language environment was actually more confusing than anything XD But I do admit that it did help later when I went on to watching shows other than in the English language… I have to admit that I do pick up languages faster than most, even without the formal “sit down and learn it in a classroom environment and school fashion” way of being taught the languages

When Fu Pei appears on your screen.
Me: “I don’t caaaare about this couple😣! Give me more Mo Mo and Gu Wei Yi!! More, please ! Pleeeease!” 😭😍❤️😭😭

No one: wow I sure love selfish, rude, second male leads and hope they get more screentime
Fu Pei: at your service 😁

Thankfully the rest of the drama is so well done and heartwarming that he’s easy to ignore lol

“Wait… is this NOT the typical Dyson vacuum cleaner??”
When Gu Wei Yi is cleaning and you notice this one has an electric cord!!
I’m so used to the overload of KDrama’s Dyson vacuum cleaner PPL, that this scene really got my attention!

I don\’t like the way Fu Pei bends forward to talk to Mo Mo, like she\’s some small creature. There\’s something so patronizing about it. I\’d rather he do \”manner legs\”, like a lot of tall Korean actors do.

4
5

It feels like he’s treating her like a kid every time he does that. If someone did that to me I would tell to stand straight of not for me at least for their back.

    5
    1

I have always wondered about it.
Was it a way for the writer to tell us how Fu Pei was seeing MoMo (like a kid), or was it the actor who tried to be at the same height , etc. I’m curious to see how he’ll be standing once he moves on from MoMo.

    2
    1

Weren’t he and Wang Shan taking about something like this? I don’t have the right wordings but on the night she confessed she talked about one of the many reasons he should go out with her was Because she’s cuz she’s tall? I’m like… 🤨

      1
      0

I think it’s purposeful. He doesn’t see her as an equal and thus needs to lower himself to her level so to speak. She was his reserve just in case he couldn’t find someone he considered better, but as soon as her adoration stoped, he couldn’t handle it. What a putz

Lured by all the squealing Beanies, I started my 2nd C-Drama, Put Your Head on my Shoulder. The 1st ep is so cute! and I had a good laugh at the lady trying to sell him pads! ha ha ha

I had to keep hitting pause on episode 5 to get screenshots, and then decided to just watch episode 6 and screenshot it after because I needed a second round of those two anyway. But let me just say, there was a a lot of fanning myself in this week’s episodes. Kim Jae-wook — those eyes are deadly.

I find most kdrama people wearing coats even when indoors or in a restaurant.

Currently watching OBSESSED and while I really really like it, I find there seems to have been a writing problem around ep 8,9 and 10. It\’s as if everything was going so well and now the writers realized the plot moved a liiiiittle too fast, and they’re now sidetracking with all sorts of needless plot lines. 1st there was the zombie plotline, which fell flat, in spite of the great set up. I mean, the used one of the protesters as their guinea pig for the zombie water, and this should have been the start of a great debate in the inherent goodness in people… but no…
Then there was the video of the father who met the bully of his dead son on the rooftop. Again, this seemed to lead to something but nope. Not even a follow up on what happened to the unfortunate father-turned-murderer.
The murder-a-week plot was also dropped…
And noooow we have our Main Man being possessed by the Old Cop and the Bad Guy slowly but surely seducing the Old Cop’s daughter.
But no wait: 1st, let’s add another evil spirit to fight.
Point: it’s clear to me that Writer-nim was a little to engrossed in the Main Leads’ awesome character & love line development to notice that the rest of the plot was going forward at lightning.
And now we’re stalled…😩
[Thank you for reading. I needed to vent. ]

I’ve only watched till ep 7, but I agree that the drug plot and the bullied victim’s story was rushed through with no proper conclusion. The manufacturer was demanding more money, so he killed him? He’s smart enough. He should’ve been more creative in threatening him or made someone his assistant so that they could take over. Also the hero didn’t follow up on the rooftop victim. If he did. maybe he could’ve prevented the girl’s death on the stairs. Didn’t the ghost warn him that the victims will be a clue to the next one? Instead he was moping around heartbroken. The romance is sweet, but it’s supposed to be balanced. The show was doing a good job of balancing the horror, comedy and romance initially. Hopefully it will become all right.

Remember to do things for yourself and your other half… Don’t do things for the sake of pretty or for the sake of having it so that people will like it or whatever– do it for yourself and because you like it…. It’s your special day and it should be planned so that YOU have a good time, and should not be planned with the mindset that you want to be a people-pleaser or have an Instagramm-able or Pin-able (Pinterest) wedding

    5

dear @bebeswtz the “Instagram-able and Pinterest-able” advice is indeed a reality. thanks for that. In an age where you’re bombarded with snippets of excellence, comparison is more than common place. What should simply be used for “inspiration” has now turned into “goals” and “must have”.

I paused binge-watching Matrimonial Chaos in order to start & catch up on Sky Castle, but I’m really glad I didn’t completely forget it. I watched the last 2 eps of Matrimonial Chaos and it was soooo lovely! And messy and heartfelt and relatable.
And it’s at the very end that I realize that actor Son Seok-Koo (the flakey cheating husband Lee Jang-Hyun) is in fact the Handsome Detective to Doona Bae’s sass in Sense8!!! No wonder I loved his very very flawed character! His character was so quirky here that in as much as I hated him for cheating AND for using his weird past as an excuse, his strange starry-eyed responses to real life were so endearing. It’s like you just want to fix him, even though we all know that it is not a person’s job to fix another!
I’m glad it worked out and that he got married. Here’s to hoping he’ll be good to his gorgeous wife till the end of their lives together!

    2

      Good idea!
It’s while going through this listing exercise that I realized just how little anime I watch now. I went from live-watching a show on almost every day of the week in any given season, to watching 1 show per year!!

Adulthood, how you have ruined my anime spirit!

Enjoy it while you still have the time 👏👏👏

Im still in love with animes but these days i dont have the time to watch streaming episodes ~coz im too poor to buy the original dvds.. i used to collect original manga too but these days i cant waste too much money but thanks to the online reading i never left behind.. recently i add chinese manhua into my reading because i found their arts are pretty

I just checked out your anime list and wow!!! What a great list!

      1
      0

On your list Kaichou wa maid sama, Akatsuki no Yona, Kamisama Hajimemashita, Chihayafuru belong to my favourite animes.

Other favourites of mine which your list doesn’t include are: Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, Watashi ga Motete Dousunda, Amnesia, Hakushaku to Yousei, Free! – Iwatobi Swim Club, Kobato, Ao Haru Ride, Gokukoku no Brynhildr, Fukigen na Mononokean, Net-juu no Susume.

Wow! My anime list is long, too. I still love rewatching them despite the fact that I’m getting older.

    2
    2

thanks for adding to my list, Bernadett. As it turns out, that was the list of memorable ones that elicited fond memories as I scrolled through years of anime previews/reviews this morning. There are tons more that I watched but probably didn’t enjoy as much. As it turns out, one of them is Ao Haru Ride; I enjoyed the manga more than the anime, for some absurd reason. Hakushaku to Yousei and Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun were fun but I didn’t cherish and obsess about them as much as some of the ones I listed there.

I WILL, however, check out the other titles: Net-juu no Susume and Fukigen na Mononokean ! YAY!! I now have shows to occupy myself with!

      1

OMG @bernadett I finished Net-juu no Susume over the weekend and it was soooooo cute!! I was all giddy and blushing and loving it !! Thank you for the great recommendation !

I loved her posts about the show, also check the what we’re watching posts, still thinking this show is too underrated and ppl were too harsh comparing it to its hyung Forest of Secrets, but well that’s life ^^’

I mean….it was never going to be Forest of Secrets. It was always going to be Forest of Secrets-Hospital Edition. ;).

      @kudoran @larelle79

before watching the show, I somehow knew that it would not be as enthralling and tightly-written as Forest of Secrets. It took weeeeeeks before I finally gave in and clicked on Cho Seung-woo’s smirky poster on Netflix, to watch the 1st episode. lol. But the minute he appeared on my screen and spoke: I was doomed to love it. Cho Seung-woo is such a great actor! He brought such nuance to a character that would otherwise have been straight up cold-and-mean in another less-experienced actor’s hands!!
and there was a great supporting cast too!
The hints of romance with Dr. Lee No-Eul made me so giddy!
Dr. Oh Se-Hwa was the badass I hadn’t even known I needed in my life!
Secretary Kang was the perfectly efficient and competent comic relief with a heart of gold!
Dr. Joo Kyung-Moon was so good at being an affable pacifist!
and wheelchair-bound Ye Sun-Woo… Lee Kyu-Hyung is top-notch at what he does.

overall… I am just glad @gadis page is there to take me back to the show’s best moments.
      (I’ll stop gushing right now)

      4
      2

I did say this at the end of the series, Lee Dong-wook was the weakest link and he was one of the leads. With that cast his shortcomings were a bit apparent as I really liked him in Goblin.

        5
        3

you’re absolutely right, @larelle79 . the contrast was so clear, it surprised me! I mean, I looooved the Grim Reaper and the Goblin’s reluctant bromance, and found myself at odds when I couldn’t like Lee Dong-Wook very much in LIFE.

          2

I have seen some shows of his, he is a limited actor. He is good at what he does. But I can see him stick out if you have too many good actors around him.

I was President Gu’s fan <3 maybe since early ep when people were still seeing him as the bad guy but the fact with Life is there are all grey characters, neither 100% good guy nor 100% bad guy (well except that ceo guy *sigh*)
        Secretary Kang was Jjang ^^

I was a fan of Gu from the beginning as well. The doctor’s painted him as the villain because…. he was smarter then they thought, not a pushover and he came in and did his job well.

Dear Fox Bride Star (Where Stars Land) Beanies: I suffered myself through watching the last episode (while multitasking during my work lunch) and… 😑
I’m not mad. Just disappointed. The ending was just blah. Meh. Worst than lukewarm. My heart did flutter a little when the main couple kissed (high five to Yeo Reum taking the lead! I loved it!), as well as the cute Security couple moment, but that’s it.
Too many missed opportunities and wasted potential. I was really rooting for a positive message about the less-able-bodied and how the OTP’s love would overcome even physical obstacles!! My fellow Beanies have done a fantastic job summing up just how not-great-or-even-good this ending was. And I am 10000% behind all Beanies who HATED that Soo Yeon’s face is hidden at the end. Shame on you, Show! Shaaaame,
As for the dreaded KDrama Time Skips. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
Can someone please explain the completely unreasonable inability for ANY kdrama OTP to stay in touch while they’re apart. What happened to the Internet? Skype? Facetime? Texting ? Whatsapp ? What happened to trying to make a relationship work across oceans because you love each other? What’s 1 year, one measly little year??! And it’s the same in e v e r y Kdrama that uses this stupid plot device! “1 year later…”😒😒😒
And who has the audacity to get jealous after keeping their crush on the hook for a WHOLE YEAR? Who does that? Really, Security Couple ? 😕😕

Any way… on to the next show 😬
