Beanie level: Errand boy

Hyena ep10:
Hee-Jae is sexy and adorable when jealous, but I’m not liking the extent to which he’s willing to invade Geum-Ja’s privacy, in the name of vying for her affection.
… Then again, tit for tat… But…

Hi Bye Mama:
I’m totally rooting for Min-jung. Like 💯💯💯💯💯. In as much as I feel sooo bad for Yu-Ri, I really really REALLY want Min-Jung to stay as mum and wife.
(ep. 6☑️)

There’s no doubt that she will. And I’m totally down with that.

I just wish we could have some sort of reconciliation between Gang-Hwa and Yu-Ri. The prologues/epilogues constantly show how in love these two were, and how miserable Gang-hwa was (is?) on the inside since her loss, but we got NIL since Yu-Ri got back.

    4
    1

They’ve been trying really hard to keep away from each other but who knows? Maybe the most recent incident will force them to step up and say/do what needs to be said/done. All I want is for Kang Hwa to HEAL, dagnabbit. That can’t happen unless Yuri has a hand in it.

Itaewon Class Ep16: Yi-seo boldly initiating 👩‍❤️‍👨💏💞. I loved it!
Overall, still a little sour about the 2nd half of this show. C’est la vie !

Actor Moon Ji Yoon has passed at 36.
He was most notably in WLFKBJ and Cheese in the Trap.
So young. So sad.

Kingdom, season 2 completed!
I really liked it a lot, but I’m not sure about that ending…

    Really, season 3??
I mean, sure but, isn’t it too obvious that the young King will turn into a zombie? And what, now we have a zombie herder? Really? 🤔
Dunno that I like where this is going but I’d watch aaaanything with Doona Bae in it 😍

    1

Yeah, I’m not sure about that part of the plot. I hope it’s done well. So, a third season is in the works, but I wonder how many more seasons will follow. It probably shouldn’t be more than three or four. I’m just wary of ongoing seasons. I’m already tired of Stranger Things, lol.

Watching the last 4 episodes of “Call me Mother” this fine Saturday morning and I’m a puddle of tears, completely gutted.
What a poignant show about mothers.

Every day that I log in, I secretly hope that I’ll no longer be an Errand Boy. And, without fail, I always (foolishly) feel a pinch of disappointment when, surprise, I am still an Errand Boy.

That moment when you and your fellow Beanies complain that Itaewon Class’s plot and the villains are too cartoonish and predictable, and yet, the source material for the Show is indeed a webtoon. Hee hee hee.

Unexpectedly, I started watching MOTHER. Episode 1 and my heart is hurt. Broken. Destroyed.

With Itaewon Class going through a pacing slump last week, I am not as excited for this Friday and Saturday’s episodes. I suspect it might be just more of the same, and I am ever-so disenchanted, which SUCKS because I really really loved the 1st half of the show.

Not to worry because this gives me a chance to start two curent Kdramas that my fellow Beanies have been raving about: Hi Bye, Mama and Hyena !
Wish me luck!

I actually really liked ep. 11 of IC. I thought it moved the story along at a faster clip plus showed more of a found family vibe in several ways (I’m a sucker for that).

Itaewon Class, ep. 11-12 in a nutshell:

Sae Ro-Yi learns that there is such a thing as healthy compromises. Toss some of that pride aside, boy! 🙌🏽

There may be no chance of a ship sailing, but Yi-seo’s heart will go on and on. Unabashedly in love. 🤗😘

Soo-Ah claims she had to bring that damn potted plant because Jangga’s President told her to but I think that was a really sh*t move on her part, regardless. Like, an inexcusable sh*t move. If you have a friend who does that, cut👏🏽them👏🏽off👏🏽.
#toxic 🐍☠️

Hyun-Yi is a Rock, a Diamond and she will not be moved * standing ovation *.💎💎💎

Seung-Kwon is a fiercely loyal friend. The way he’s always holding Toni’s hand and his unwavering support of Sae Ro Yi and Hyun-Yi. Bless him. 💖

Kim Toni is has wise words, full of compassion. And won the family jackpot! Like, can we talk about that? 😂🤑🤑🤑

Geun-Soo has reversed his jacket and I dislike his puppy-faced nepotism a** even more.😒

CEO Jang must pull his predictable vilain moves from a The Petty Textbook 101 for Entitled rags-to-riches Chaebols.😒🙄

You summed both episodes up well and I agree. The first was painful……. but
“Hyun-Yi is a Rock, a Diamond and she will not be moved * standing ovation *.💎💎💎”

love LOVE what they did!!!! I was clapping and my eyes were more than damp at the end.

Saying it one more time and then I will officially log off Dramabeans for a bit:

The issue being debated is not Kim Toni’s passport, which, I am sure, states that he is Guinean.

The issue being discussed here is his ancestry. and if he says he’s (half) Korean, then that’s all that matters.

Is the officer right in asking him for identification to get a record for his father and grandmother’s whereabouts? ABSOLUTELY. It’s an official document request and proof of family lineage is required to obtain this information. Anyone, whether they looked Asian or not, would need to provide this information.

Is the bouncer right for asking for identification? Yes. Everyone is required to show ID before entering.

Are the club owners right for not wanting African or Arabs in their establishment? No. That is discriminatory and therefore racist.

Did Yi-Seo tell him he can obviously NOT be Korean, solely based on his skin colour? Yes. Is she in a place of authority to require him to prove his ancestry? No. Does one need to look like their ancestor to BE of that ancestry? No. Does one need to have ID to prove they are of a given ethnic background, whether 100% or half or a quarter? ABSOLUTELY NOT. If he says his dad is Korean, that’s it.

I do appreciate the questions that arise from this drama. It’s refreshing to see social issues other than socioeconomics being addressed.

Behold, the RECAP for Ep.8 of ITAEWON CLASS has arrived (YAY! Thank you, Sunny!) and, predictably enough, the subject of racism comes up.

To all those who seem to be “on the fence” or defending racist actions by enveloping it under the guise of sociopathy and “not knowing better” and “he says he’s Korean but he doesn’t look Korean and he doesn’t have a Korean ID”, good luck navigating life with those blindfolders.

Here’s a (long) article to express my weariness explaining racism, especially anti-Black racism:
https://metro.co.uk/2020/02/25/psychological-impact-constantly-explain-racism-12147969/

Agreed (and I hope none of my previous comments were to this effect, because that was not my intent). I think that Yi-seo and the bouncer were absolutely racist and wrong in their assumptions, and there is no excuse for it. The only reason I ever bring up sociopathy in regard to Yi-seo is that while she may know better, she just doesn’t care. And that is in and of itself incredibly problematic but it’s also a totally different issue from her being racist, which she absolutely was (is?).

    5

The outright racism and subtle racism (emblems on clothing for example) in some K-dramas came as a shock to me. I’m glad this one is facing it head on for a change.

Shall we vote Yi-Seo (Itaewon Class) as being the Most Polarizing Character in the early 2020?

Lol. But oh so fascinating. And I like (as long as it is civil) the discussions that pop up around her. I think the writer is using her in an interesting way.

@amy1009 that is interesting. I was tempted to peek at spoilers, but decided to stay away.
One of the ways I’m finding the show compelling is seeing how I instinctively react to a given situation, especially around Yi seo

I’m still very interestedin Soo ah too.

I yelled at my TV so much, my husband asked who I was talking to. Itaewon Class, no no no no no no!

Let me explain: I am glad that the Show addressed the some of discrimination that Kim Toni faces. Not getting accepted into the club? I saw that turn out from a mile away! It was expected and what I was waiting for was the others’ reaction to this, which went well, except for our Fav Annoying Sociopath (more on that later).

The issue: the discrimination is, in fact, within, and veiled as cuteness. Why would Kim Toni have to learn English????? Sae-ro-yi and the other knew damn well he didn’t speak English when they hired him and yet, because he’s Black, it’s expected that he should. To the point that they even have a meeting about it, for Toni to explain that he speaks fluent French instead. Like, isn’t THAT racist? Micro-aggression much?? And yes, I know, I know, it’s a Korean show and blah blah 99% homogeneous population, yadda yadda ya… It’s either you do or don’t. Having a Black character is not mandatory (clearly). They could have done without it, if they were not going to spare our poor Toni having to deal with micro-aggression at work that gets swept under the rug. The Show makes a big deal about Toni getting kicked out of the club but his colleagues asking him to learn English SPECIFICALLY because he’s Black? Let’s brush that off real quick, non ?

As for you, Yi-seo… “You’re not Korean because you’re Black and you haven’t been naturalizer yet, but sure, I’ll help you find your grandma and your father, and that should brush off all my racists misgivings because the Show will make it look like it’s because I’m a sociopath and I don’t understand empathy for people I don’t love and I only love Sae-ro-yi, so it’s ok to help his people”?

    F**K that!

I now see the sociopath traits that seemed sooo cute and bratty at first but now, yeah, glad she’s in therapy because the things she said and did to both Kim Toni and Geun Soo made me sooooooooooooo mad! The level of coldness and apathy… GAAAAAAH !

    4
    1

I thought he did know English, this made me laugh at myself. He said he’d been in Korea only a year and I made the assumption that he was American. I guess I saw the meeting as cute (especially the hand holding) because I though that was why she hired him that she’d made the same assumption which is still problematic. But you are right why does he have to be the one to learn english now that they know he speaks French whic would also be a plus?

So, that moment when she decides to help Kim Toni find his family. I had to turn it off because I thought it would be the same as the “Unnie”. That it would make it all better and to the team it did, but then I thought we are still supposed to see that nothing changed she is just acting to fit what she thinks Sae ro yi wants.
Now I’m worried that we are supposed to see her sociopathic nature as a reason for it, and I really hope not.
At this point in a show I’d expect to see glimpses of growth or a hidden better nature and instead we are getting the flip of that.

There was a moment in that scene when Yi-seo is getting patted on the head and Geun-soo looks at her and i really hope i read that look correctly as him finally being over his crush.

      3
      1

I like the show too much to even bother pretending that I’m gonna drop it over the microaggressions they are inflicting on my Toni. 😅😏

it’s the “Unnie” issue again and yet, now that my eyes are clear and that I see Yi-Seo as the actual 69% sociopath that she said she was, her behaviour is indeed pretty consistent 😒😒😒. Still mad at her though.

I actually thought Geun Soo would say something along the lines of “you know she’s only being nice because she likes SaeRoYi, right? She definitely didn’t mean that apology!”

        3
        1

Yes, I’m looking at the “unnie” issue with new eyes. The way it was resolved seemed to pat and now I think it was supposed to seem that way to the viewers. The same with her making that post about the club and the crew are all happy with her. It was just framed a different way. At least I think this is what the writer wants us to see.

OMG thank you for pointing this my way, this is literally the kind of content I need rn! I love when the fanwall does its magic.

I’ve just watched a bit of it and I couldn’t stop cackling!!!
They have now completely ruined Urban Zakapa’s “I don’t love you” for me, which I’d never been able to listen to without my heart breaking.
But I don’t think I’ll ever not laugh upon hearing it now. 😂😂😂

I’ll make sure to finish this in the very near future
