Note: This gonna be a really long post, with spoilers of works mentioned. But most probably this will be the one & only post about these works too. 🙂

It’s been YEARS since I touched a Chinese drama (China) despite it being my native language. I did try Put Your Head on My Shoulder few months back but couldn’t even get pass Ep 2. Just doesn’t have interest & hate dubbings.

But due to the excessive propaganda on fanwalls & easy access thanks to Netflix, I finally pressed play on The Untamed.

I didn’t fall head over heels but I did enjoy the show. For I have seen my share of wuxia & xianxia since young, thanks to my 3 elder brothers. The plot wasn’t too difficult to understand, nor unpredictable for me. I love the OTP but not to the extent of going gaga over the actors. (My sanity is safe, 😏😝)

However, my crave for BL *cough* wasn’t fulfilled thanks to the strict censorship, so I went to read the original source. The novel, Mo Dao Zu Shi & OMFG. I FUCKING LOVE IT. Granted, I was just scanning thru for the OTP moments but GOD I died from hysterical laughter at every single of the OTP’s interactions in the novel. If only there wasn’t censorship… Damn it.

Though I wonder if the magic of subtle awesomeness (yes, that’s what I called it) will disappear if the drama did follow the BL aspects of the novel closely…

If you can’t get enough of LZ’s drunken antics, CHECK OUT THE NOVEL. You won’t regret it. The drama had only displayed 10% of it. I swear.

If you can’t get enough of WY’s playful antics, CHECK OUT THE NOVEL. You won’t regret it. Remember, censorship.

If you want explicit explanations of the characters’ actions, CHECK OUT THE NOVEL. You won’t regret it. The drama actually hid a lot of truth imo. I swear. *blames the censorship again*

If you want more BL, more LZ’s thoughtfulness/selflessness/patience/devotedness/loyalty towards WY, anything more than just subtle awesomeness, CHECK OUT THE NOVEL NOW. YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT.

Yes, you guess it right. This is a propaganda post for Mo Dao Zu Shi, the novel. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Beanies who love the drama & can read Chinese, I see ABSOLUTELY NO REASON for you to skip the novel. The writer’s sense of humor is right up my alley, & with her witty narrations, it’s so much more fun than just seeing the poker face LZ in the drama. Her descriptions exactly tell me what’s LZ feeling than having to guess from his straight face in the show.

(I know there’s translated versions online too. I actually checked out one of the extra chapters translated & got a freaking shock. Because there was too much info aka plain porn. I’m not sure if fanfic was included in the translations or the Chinese version I read was incomplete aka safe version. But I rather have that anyway. Once again so damn glad that I can read Chinese coz let’s be honest, the original language will always be the best.)

Ah… Reminds me of the good old days. When I was a teenager, when my friends were reading stuff like Dan Brown etc, I’m reading Taiwanese romance novels. HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Now, here’s some short afterthoughts of the novel. If you have plans to read the novel, please stop here. there’s spoilers ahead & I swear you wouldn’t want it. Oh, it’s a MUST to read the extra chapters. You wouldn’t want to miss the good stuff.

– WY’s forgetfulness is on another level here & I hate it. I can call it amnesia already but then again, it was kinda needed for plot development I guess?
– Luckily LZ can cook or else what they gonna do when they start living together? We all know about WY’s cooking skills. Hahahaha!
– The part at Guanying Temple supposed to be the highlight, but the drama version was bloody anticlimactic compared to the novel coz that public confession was god damn hilarious.
– Who knew LZ could be so lustful? *cough*

There were some hints of confession in the drama, but this gonna be my favorite one.

You know exactly what it means, after the story of LZ’s parents was mentioned.

AH! Thanks beanies, for all the propaganda. It’s been so long since I enjoyed a Chinese novel.

Most importantly, thank you, Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. The novel’s author. ❤️

忘羡 (Wangxian) is perfect to describe LZ’s love for WY. Besides the combination of their names, the meaning of the Chinese characters are so on point. ❣️

Playful Weiying, drunken Lanzhan, clumsy Weining. I love you guys. 💕

Awwww Thanks for this, @jrr 🙂
Thankfully, I have the anime (seasons 1 & 2) & the novel bookmarked so that I can get to it any time I want to 🙂

Gosh this scene was everything, he wanted to protect WY 16 years ago like his father did for his parents.
I think the storyline of the yin metal/body parts made more sense in the book than in the drama. I especially love the scene in the temple where WY confesses his feelings and XC, JGS are like ‘Finally what took you so long!’

yep, that scene was indeed everything. the impact was already there when i watched that scene, then when his bro told WY about what happened to his parents, i died.

i’m guilty that i was focusing on just the OTP moments when i read the novel, so the story on the yin metal/body parts was kinda neglected. 🙊

my favo scene was actually the one at yunmeng’s ancestral hall. u have no idea how much i rolled on my bed when i read that coz i was supposed to be sleeping at that time! god damn, who knew there was a hidden meaning to it when i watched the drama?! coz nothing was mentioned & it’s so different in the drama!!!

My favorite scene was the blindfold kissing part *cough cough* 😏

The drama did a great job adapting from the novel but because of the censors the novel will definitely be the better of the 2.

HAHAHA! the revelation was so funny once again. i just love the author’s sense of humor so damn much. it’s the combo of romance & humor (more of flirting & teasing LOL) that sealed the deal for me. is HOB this fun too?

what could have been, without the censorship.. *sighs*

Oh ya. She retains her sense of humor through all her novels. Which is why I love her ❤

AWW. it’s tempting. HOB. but i’m too lazy to read up on all the background info & other characters. that’s why i need to watch the drama 1st. easier that way, lol!

anw, u read her 1st novel too? was it good too? do u know if there’s a drama for it?

          1
          1

Ya. Scum Villain. It was entertaining and fun but not as deep and emotionally profound as her other 2 novels. Good if you just want a light and fun BL.

u know what? my hands got itchy & i clicked on chapter 1 of HOB. i’m only halfway thru the chapter, i’m laughing in tears already. the writer is really something. i swear.

I’ve started reading it too, it is great!!

Yessss! That was such a great scene, I also loved the LZ drunk scenes and when WYfound out about the headband meaning!

Imagine we get the hide & seek + shower scenes in the drama. 🙈

            0

I know, it is such a shame that scene wasn’t included in the drama!
After that confession, I paid no attention to everyone else and focused on their scenes. How cute when SS came in, WY said he didn’t want to leave LZ’s embrace! LZ actually laughed, just perfect.

Now go read the authors other novel, Heaven’s Official Blessing! 😆 I loved Mo Dao Zu Shi but I thought HOB was even better. I was staying up hours past when I should be going to sleep reading it. I would sneak away at work to read it. The romance is more pure but more deep also (there are no scenes in the book, the most they do is kiss). I didn’t think anyone could love more than Lan Zhan loved Wei Ying until I read HOB.

On another note, I loved the confession and even made a post on the fanwall about it 🤣 Only WWX would confess like that lol

i guess there isn’t a drama for Heaven’s Official Blessing yet right? coz i’m a lazy bum bum. i would prefer to watch the liveaction or at least the anime before i go to the novel, so i can just scan thru for the OTP moments. HAHAHA!

& there’s freaking 252 chapters? omg. i can read chinese, yes, but i would actually rather spend that time on more dramas. 😂 i will be patiently waiting for HOB’s drama then. 🤣 in the meanwhile, i’m so gonna reread MDZS coz i miss all those flirting & teasing already!! 😆

just like i mentioned on the above reply to another beanie, i love the scene at yunmeng’s ancestral hall more than anything. 😍 the temple confession was so hilarious, that JGY reacted by releasing WY helplessly. HAHAHAHA.

Ya it’s like twice as long as MDZS but so worth it. I actually started crying while reading it, something I didn’t do with MDZS. Don’t get me wrong, I loved MDZS but thought HOB was even better written. The writer gets better with each book she writes (I’ve read all 3 of her novels) And the romance in HOB was so swoony 😍 such a great romance.

The anime has a trailer out already so it should be coming soonish. I don’t think there is even a cast for the drama though (or if there is nothing has been publicized) so it probably wont come out until 2021 or so 😭😭 I dont know how I’ll wait that long!

        1
        3

hmm.. but the anime episodes won’t come out all at once right? i mean, it will take years to complete.. i think i just have to wait then.

my logic is that, the original work is always the best. if i were to read the novel b4 i watch the drama, the drama will disappoint me 95% of the time. so i would rather watch the drama b4 the novel. *patience is a virtue* i hope i wont get too tempted to start on HOB soon, lol.

          1

True lol the dramas just can’t compete with the novels. I was not patient 😆

“I actually started crying while reading it, something I didn’t do with MDZS.”

GOD i know how u feel now. the same thing happened to me. i think i was around chapter 10+ish & i was laughing in tears as usual but at the same time, i felt a slight pang in my heart & got really teary. i think coz we already know the writer’s style. i can already foresee the possibilities of what gonna happened & what had happened. maybe? if yes, i gonna do it slowly, hopefully. there’s a bunch of kdramas that just finished airing & i gotta get to them 1st. it’s nice to go back to read though. it’s been a long while. i liked reading chinese novels when i was younger. but i always love dramas. *priorities, lol*

The folks who translated the audio drama moved the links to Discord. You may not need the translations but it’s where you can download the audio drama to listen for free. I believe it is almost complete. They were translating the extras for each season. Here’s the link to the Discord invite:

thanks once again! i have tried it! for the parts which were omitted in the drama. don’t think i will sit thru the entire audio drama, though i will be waiting for the remaining extra chapters that are not available yet coz *cough* they are kinda important. 🤣

You’re welcome! I have only completed the first season and It was lots of fun. Then I got side tracked reading HOB and haven’t finished the rest yet.

I’ll go back to it when all episodes plus the when all the extras are up coz *nods head* they are important!
