I discovered Brown Eyed Girls thanks to 2pm and 2am’s parody. The funniest thing is Gain (BEG’s maknae) did We Got Married with Jokwon (2am’s leader, the pink human vibrator guy aka Kkap Kwon).

Fellow translation students in my year are planning to make a translation association in our university to gain fund for various projects and attending translation conferences. The problem is we don’t know where to begin and since it’s summer break, people are back home and/or working. Professors tell us to hurry up (and they’re right) but we’re so lost and not enough people in our year seem motivated. Just like Jung Gook and the gang didn’t know how to make a bill, we don’t know where to start. We thought summer wasn’t going to be stressful 😭

1
4

Is there a manual from your school about how to go about starting an association? Or an office you could go to at the school like Student Services that could help with that? Then, while some people work on getting it started, some others could start doing research on the conferences that you want to attend – dates, cost, etc. If the goal is to get funds you definitely have to develop a solid proposal on how going to conferences can benefit students – basically justify the funds being given. I have no suggestions for lack of motivated classmates though ๐Ÿ™ Conferences are fun and educational, so I hope you get through. Good luck!

    2
    1

We have Student Services but we need to work more on our proposal, be more concrete and determine how we can participate on the campus events (a condition to be approved). As a student association, we need to do something as counterpart for other students. I have a small idea but we need more people. We are actually 5 people invested but we can’t build it on our own. If we can’t make a proposal during summer, we’ll have to reach to newcomers. We’re hoping to find members very soon to take over because we’re all graduating next year. In a sense, we do it more for the new students than for us. It must be why not a lot of people want to be invested.

      1
      1

That makes sense. I think most people are propably more concerned about what happens after graduation at this point. Reaching out to newcomers is not a bad idea. Attending and participating in conferences was one of the highlights of university for me, so I think it would be great for you all to go, and to pave the way for others as well. What languages do you translate, may I ask?

        0
        1

We went to a German translation event before summer break and loved it. We want other students to have opportunities to interact with professionals, that’s the also one of the main reasons for creating the association.

I translate from German and a bit of English to French. There are students who translate from Spanish too.

The joy of being back in my hometown: visiting relatives and my parents friends

Part 1: updates.

I\’m getting updated on gossips, people\’s career life, love life, death and health. All of this in the span of one week.

Part 2: talking about my college life… 15 minutes are more than enough.

I give a quick overview of my studies, explain what I\’m exactly studying, talk about life quality where I live during my studies, deny for a billion time I got a boyfriend.

Part 3: talking about my future.

I just throw a few ideas for what I\’ll do after graduation and people pick the one they like the best to spread some weird rumors. Saying again I don\’t plan to marry for an aunt to tell how crazy I am for wanting to stay alone…

Part 4: what am I planning for summer break.

I\’ll figure it out with my friends. Thanks.

Part 5: my driving licence.

I got it almost three years ago and drove only for 6 months. My uncles are more eager than me to see me drive. Like hell, I\’m traumatized to do it again.

Hahahaha. I remember this stage. Same questions over and over. By the end youโ€™ll have your answers down pat!

P.S. The more you practice driving the less intimidating it gets โ˜บ๏ธ I canโ€™t imagine not using a car to get around. *panics thinking about it* Driving is essential. Windows down music blasting is a great feeling. 😉

    2
    1

I already have them prepared besides the ones about the new town where I study haha.

My driving school made me so anxious of driving that I don’t want to sit on the driver’s sit anymore. The thing is I was actually excited when I was only with my dad. The best news I learned today: the school closed down.

I\’ve been watching more movies recently and a few questions popped up in my mind: why are some actors/actresses cast in movies rather than dramas and vice versa? Recurrent faces appear in dramas, so do they in movies. Is there a specific profile to be casted in movies or dramas?

2
15

I think there is huge acting style difference and the way story is told in both mediums. But I am no expert, so here is my take on it:
I feel like in dramas, there is a lot more time spent on building emotions and a lot of it depends on the actors because they have a lot more scrren time, so if you cannot express these thing very well for a long screen time, you will look awkward on screen, on the other hand movies have a short duration and you don’t have to demand so many expressions or variety from the actors and so even a medium grade actor can do a great film, just because the director can choose what to highlight and what to leave on purely time issues.

    0
    2

Iโ€™ve always thought that movie actors were paid more though? Also, itโ€™s more physically demanding most of the time and the themes are more controversial. I think to make good money (like Gong Yoo) you have to be a good actor in any medium.

      4
      1

Paycheck must be a big reason to it. I agree there are more challenging roles and they allow more unconventional faces to show up. Ryu Joon Yeol films so many movies, I became sick of him for the time being LOL

Working conditions are usually better because they don’t film live like dramas. Kang Dong Won, and surely more people said they didn’t want to film dramas for this reason.

        3
        1

You know what, I realised just now that I never think about money in any respect with entertainment and I am wrong about it, because this is the most big factor governing everything. Alas!

          2
          3

Also a factor is what kind of image actors have been giving themself true the project they have done. many actors say they often want to do different genere but the script they are given is often in same genere. Some of them have said that they get more move scripts than drama script because they have done more movies. Remember Kang dong won have said that he really want to do a drama project, but no drama script is coming to him… so seems like there is many factors as to why some actors do movies more them tv dramas.

            2
            0

Now that we’re talking about money, I just thought of Won Bin. He wasn’t in a movie/drama for years and relies on CFs. I read he feared his next project wouldn’t live up to his past ones, while it could be highly true, if it wasn’t for the money he already earns, he would have made a comeback much earlier.

            1
            0

I didn’t know about people getting only drama scripts or movie scripts. Thanks @silje !

            1
            0

That could explain why actors/actresses used to movies may appear akward in dramas and the same for drama actors in movies.

Drama episodes are really long, even a movie’s lenght in Reply 1988’s case, so I sometimes feel like directors ask the actors to be more contemplative and express deep feeling just like you explained. That could be why actors/actresses, Park So Dam, Kim Go Eun, Lee Je Hoon, Han Hyo Joo to name a few, who go over to dramas received bad response because of their performance (usually on early episodes).

When I think of drama actors/actresses in movies, there aren’t that much bad responses about their perfomances but they don’t expend their cinematographic career. Lee Min Ho, Lee Jong Seok, Park Seo Joon and Kim Soo Hyun did not film many movies while they’re popular for their dramas. So, are some popular drama leads not worth in director’s eyes or do they themselves choose not to appear on movies?

Imo movies and pre-produced dramas offer the most advantages in a career.

ooooh just seeing this and it interests me. i think the thing about pay is true, which is sad, but that’s also how people can make $ in general. the woman from that recent JTBC show about bullying left for years to work in china and she said it was because she had no other way to support her family.

i think more people CAN be cast in movies as well. the thing about korean films is how drastically different they are for dramas because of content and censorship. like the handmaiden would never be able to be a thing even watered down. i think for SOME actors it’s about the talent and challenging aspect. then there are those who do both! i feel like you can tell who cares more about the craft than money (i don’t mean as a not-greed sense it’s just diff things are important to people)

kim min hee is also a good example of the film root. i mean she has no choice now but she stuck to the big screen even before she let a man ruin her life! it’s fascinating!!!

    1
    1

About movies being drastically different: Old Boy and A Frozen Flower slapped me in the face with their R-rated content.

People need to make a living and there’s nothing wrong with a big paycheck. Not everyone is purely interested in artistic choices. Art alone doesn’t put food on your plate.

I’m not updated on Kim Min Hee’s career since the scandal. Did she get works? Because of her image, directors might be wary of casting her. But then, other people who did worse are still active.

      1

hahahahah yea it’s crazy right? i feel like movies give you more of an idea of like actual korean culture even if they’re fantastical because so many dramas leave out the true messiness of life which includes sex, immense trauma, and addiction etc with people who are all diff? not everything is pretty and glamorous, a lot of actors in movies look more normal, etc. there’s also the “art” debate surrounding it (which leads me to the next point..)

and yea of course. i mean the merits of $ in the business and the disparities are something im interested in (as a crew member) but i don’t think taking money for survival or whatever is bad. being an artist is really hard. that’s also probably why there’s a big class difference when we look at choices people make and their talent. a lot of actors and actresses who came from poor backgrounds didn’t get money until WAY later in life and the theater system people enter (it’s a really common route to take in media) is not lucrative in the least bit. as opposed to say an idol or someone with a ‘better’ background who has more of a choice. i digress ahha

i’m not sure if you have read this piece where it inspects her career and hong sang soo? if not lmk and ill try to find it. she only works with him at this point. it’s sad because she’s so talented but it’s pure misogyny. but i am sure other indie directors would cast her or park chan wook again. it’s really cruel what happened but dont get me started on THAT. her face is incredible like it was made for a camera it’s so commanding.

        1
        1

I haven’t read it and it would be interesting ๐Ÿ™‚ Working with only one director isn’t good for her career. What if their relationship goes bad? She might not receive offers…

it’s honestly really sad. i never liked HSS movies and theyre really popular internationally because that’s the type of shit pretentious film ppl like. he has always had issues with women and every film he’s made is literally his life or re-enactment of his fantasies. idk if you have ever seen a film of his but while reading this it’s so painfully clear how he has taken the idea of male selfishness and cultivated it. btw it also mentions lack of female leads in movies!

i really wish this hadn’t happened esp bc i do strongly believe that an actor and director’s relationship can be very skewed (he is also older) but if she’s content then…

            0
            0

@amara I never bothered checking his works because they seem too art-house for me.

I really like Kim Min Hee and it’s frustrating to see she’s the only one receiving hate and have her career limited. In one hand, I kind of hope for them to stay together because that’s her only way to stay active. On the other hand, I hate that her career depends on a single person.

            1
            0

unfortunately that’s the international appeal ๐Ÿ™ they’re VERY slow and very male focused and generally always include an older man/younger woman dynamic or some sort of power imbalance.

i agree. honestly if she is happy despite who this man is as a person it’s good. i hope that sustains her…it’s sooo hard to be a woman. they admitted it in front of everyone too i would be so humiliated! let’s cross our fingers that we will be able to see her again, though!

I\’m back to my hometown and went to a new shopping mall with long time friends. A local trio that was famous in our middle school years performed there and we didn\’t know. It was fascinating to see them again after almost ten years and really closely.

Jvcki Wai, a female rapper, talked about her bad experience with religious fanatics in her family and her uncle’s sexual assaults. It makes events in Save Me 1&2 even more horrific.

When truth is stranger than fiction. This song is actually really well written. Some might find it blasphemous, but I think it helps show the point where many have reached with religion and how religion has affected them.

    1
    1

That’s right. I encountered a few people with different experiences – good and bad – and their approach is always interesting to me. I’m not a religious person but doesn’t completely reject the concept of religion. It’s the people using it with bad intentions that I despise.

      1
      0

This was so well written. I’ve recently been listening to a few Jvcki Wai songs and liking them. Hearing this makes me sad for what she went though but glad that she’s pulled through and is at a point where she can call out the BS culty religion is. I’ve seen some people in my family that were in close-to-culty religious organisations or grew up in such environments and even when they are far removed from it, I can tell the psychological impact that that has on them, even 40 years later.

    1
    1

I know Jvcki Wai since she joined Just Music but never checked her earlier stuff. It’s shocking to know she went through it and brave of her for overcoming and sharing this experience.

I’m sad to read you know people who are still affected by cults. It’s a problem that should be enlighted imo.
