I’m obsessed with “Silent Night”! Which one is your favorite based on the preview?

      Silent Night too!

I’ve listened to it a few dozen times already. I’m so hoping the full-length song won’t be a disappointment. I don’t think I’ve every been this into a teaser of a song before so hopefully that means it’s going to be amazing!

I need recommendations from Indian Beanies (or someone interested in Indian literature). Can you recommend a book from an Indian author that\’s not widely known? It\’s for my foreign literature class πŸ™‚

I forgot to add, she or he must write in English.

That’s super broad! But let me take a stab. These are a few that come to mind across various genres and styles of storytelling. I would link to their Goodreads pages but DB might think it’s spam if it has too many links.

      1. Em and the Big Hoon – Jerry Pinto (Riveting, superbly written book about what it means to be family and about mental health)
      2. Lunatic in My Head – Anjum Hasan (Again, very well written book that captures slice of life in a part of Northeast India that’s not very well represented in the mainstream)
      3. Leila – Prayaag Akbar (Dystopian novel that’s been made into a Netflix series. The book is better)
      4. Milk Teeth – Amrita Mahale (It’s more the tale of Mumbai when it used to be called Bombay, and on the various ways of belonging we can experience)
      5. Ghachar Ghochar – Vivek Shanbhag (It’s translated into English from an Indian language called Kannada, and tells the story of a middle-class family in a city called Bangalore in spare, simple prose)
      6. The Island of Lost Girls – Manjula Padmanabhan (AMAZING and very unsettling speculative fiction book that talks about gender and identity and all the issues we’re seeing today, including climate change. A review here – https://www.business-standard.com/article/opinion/nilanjana-s-roy-lost-and-found-girls-115081701283_1.html)
      7. Dangerlok – Eunice D’souza (This is a slim book, but no less entertaining for it. We see the world through the eyes of a middle-aged single woman in Mumbai and see it through her equal parts cutting and kind gaze)

I don’t know where you live, but I hope these are available online, and that you find something you like ^^

Thanks a lot! I have to choose a book which hasn’t been translated in French so I think your list will help me a lot! Dangerlok doesn’t meet the requirement as it’s not originally written in English but it (and others which won’t make the cut) will be on personal to-read list πŸ˜€

The Island of Lost Girls sound like a story I’d love. Thanks again!

Any time! Apart from Book 5 all the others were written originally in English, and none have been translated to French, as far as I know. The Island of Lost Girls is actually a sequel but it works on its own as well. ^^

Oh thanks for the information about The Island of Lost Girls!

oh wow, thanks I have also searching for books by Indian authors, I know next to none, other than a few very famous ones.
Do you know more? Written originally in an Indian language than in English.

Sure! This is a good list that has books that were translated from a bunch of Indian languages -https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/110751.Indian_Fiction_Translated_Into_English
Is there a particular language that you’re looking for?

The Windfall seems like such a feel good story! It might be to introduce a story full of humour to my class.

The Parcel is intriguing. I’m not sure if I will have time to read everything but that’s nice of you. Thank you a lot πŸ˜€

Because they expect to “bump” into a loooot of people who recognize them AND will take pics of them. and you know what they say, “once it’s on Internet, it’s forever.” And who wants to look Forever Exhausted TM on the internet?
    LOL

Haha indeed. I think some of them or their stylists sometimes don’t pay attention to it. Or it’s too high fashion for a commoner like me 😅
