Extraordinary You – Episode 4 (7/8)

Baek Kyung – Feeling betrayed!

ok, I just finished watching Epsiode 4 and I felt extremely betrayed. Betrayed by the writer, by Dan-Oh and Do-Hwa.
It all felt very sad. It was painful to see Baek-Kyung’s unresolved feelings – he is self-aware but doesn’t know it, his feelings went straight to ‘jealousy’ as he tries to hold on to what was his, that ‘jealousy’ creeped into the stage (by the writer) and he is just exploding everywhere.

This show was pointing out how we all look at things from the ‘central’ characters perspective. And in that lens, Dan-Oh is her center. She is seeing Baek Kyung as the guy who has been hurting her for years. And when Baek Kyung betrayed his awareness, she just did not catch it. Because, he was irrelevant to her.
He clearly acted out of character saying he is worried about her, and she even noticed that he spoke of an event that did not happen in stage because something changed. Why did she not catch this?

The next one who should have caught it was Do-Hwa. There was absolutely no reason why Do-Hwa did not catch it. He doesn’t have any prejudice against BK and he is his friend, by stage. His face showed that he had the doubts. He should have questioned him more. He should have.

It was really painful to watch Baek Kyung suddenly remembering everything and he doesn’t know how to react. His extreme jealousy was his instant reaction. Everything from stage to shadow is just pouring on his awareness and he is exploding.
[I will talk about that sequence in a separate post]
For now, I am really trying to understand what the ‘writer’ is trying to do with Baek Kyung. Because, this HURTS!!

I don’t know if hrs self aware yet, but he certainly seems to be getting there

He definitely is. Even the previous episode he was showing signs. This episode he definitely is there. The fact that he remembers what’s happening in the stage is what is getting to him, because it’s outside the script and he is going rogue.

Also I’m not THAT impressed with Do-hwa. He’s nice to everyone but doesn’t stand up for anyone either. Like Yuda, when Namjoo bullies her. He just stands to the side & let’s it happen. Very meh for me.

    2

Even in the ‘real’ world he ended up the secondary character 🙂

Just like what Dan Oh told him he seemed pretty lax and accepting of his reality. After the first shock, life moved on for him. We’ll see if he has some character growth going on too, but at the moment he seems to be more interested in Dan Oh’s life and quest to freedom.

      1

That’s what is interesting. Depending on what personality and context the writer has given these characters their awakening may or may not be significant.
For eg Dan-Oh has a reasonably good life with money and caring father and good friends. But has a terminal illness. So her biggest conflict after awakening is staying alive. So her focus is clear. And she is able to cast aside years of her hurt from BK due to her personality.
For DoHwa we know nothing of his life. It’s bland. He is just a simple sweet guy who is happy to be around. So his awakening was equally bland.
But Baek Hyung is a complex character – he has major abuse issues going on at home, he is a loner, he has temper issues and a lot of unresolved stuff. On top of it he has to like a girl for his fathers sake and has been building up for years. So when he awakens, there is whole lot of deal with.
The sooner he knows the rules of the world the better it’s for him. But I fear the writer is taking his jealousy and running with it. And i dont like it.

I was surprised by how violent he became in the Stage ever since Haru acted on his own. I’m not sure if it’s the webtoon writer finding his jealousy interesting and making use of it (which, ugh, no! Stop, please), or it’s the ugly side effect of too many characters awakening that the Squid Guy talked about. Either way, I’m dreading the moment when Kyung finally know the truth. If he realized he was behaving much like his hated father in front of the girl that he actually cared about… (and yes, I’m 98% sure that deep down he cares aboit Dan-oh)

I am not too sure he cares about Dan-oh. At least not until he realises she is not the manipulative spoiled rich girl he thinks she is. Maybe he does care for her in a unconscious way but whenever he suspects or knows she’s out of danger, he changes real quick to utter contempt.

      2
      0

I feel the same way! It shocked me that he became violent so quickly and it felt a bit out of character (at the time) for him…

      1
      1

Ikr? It really felt out of character for him to behave that way. He never really resorted to physical assault before. But at the same time, I wonder if this will be the thing that fully awaken him. After all, Do-hwa admitted that he felt strange when suddenly his life revolved around Ju-da. Maybe the trigger for these character awakening is whenever the webtoon writer make them do something out of character or give them an inconsistent turn of event.

Dohwa would probably be the first character to notice Baek Kyung gaining awareness and caring for Danoh but he might not be the one to tell him. Poor puppy has to discover he is aware all by himself.

I’m 99.9% sure Baek Kyung in the drama cares for Danoh, at least deep inside.

    1

From Dan Oh’s perspective, even if she understands Baek Kyung, this was the same guy who hurts her stage self, the one she pines for hopelessly, so I guess there’s some bias there from her. She doesn’t see that he maybe close to being self aware even if she noted he’s been odd because she simply couldn’t care less…

I get her point. But I feel him being left alone is going to be a big mess.. he is not just going to be confused, he is going to act in ways that are not pleasant..

      3
      1

Yes hopefully he will not turn into a villain in this drama as a result of his self-awareness. And that his self aware will be like Dan Oh – to do all means to get his life back and correct it.

        1
        1

I have a strong feeling that’s where the writers are going with him. Come on, look at him. He is so good at playing the bad guy that it affects us viewers. It would be too tempting to use him as an antagonist!!

          1
          0

I think the writer will be the “bad guy” and maybe Mi-chae. I think Kyung will hit rock bottom next week and come back to the light the week after.

Extraordinary You – Episode 3 (5/6)

Baek Kyung knows her gaze, and it falters!

For someone who claims he doesn’t care, he sure as hell knows when Dan-Oh’s attention is not on him. He is constantly aware of her gaze and the moment it falters he takes note.

…..

He is talking to her, but she is not looking at him. He snaps at her to look at him. Because, that’s what he is used to. Her looking at him at all time.

He enters the lab, and he instantly knows Dan-Oh’s eyes are not on him but behind him. Suspiciously, he looks behind him as #13 makes his entry.

When in the classroom, he also takes note of Dan-Oh looking at #13 who is by the window. We dont get to see him more, but am pretty sure he noticed #13.

The girls are cheering the boys play soccer, but he knows Dan-Oh’s gaze is not on him, but on this other guy. He also takes note that this other guy is looking at her too.

OMOOO!!! I especially love that soccer scene!! Actually anything shadow scene I love. My fictional characters being real!

We see more of Baek Kyung who is not so much of a grumpy in shadow. And how he genuinely cares for Dan Oh.

    5
    2

The number of times he has asked her about her health!! I have lost count.
Even when he grumpily says that she should have stayed at home instead of the summer camp it like he is worried..
I don’t know at what point he is going to turn, but am so not ready for it..

      5
      1

He is very close. I legit yelped when he asked “where was I?” !!!!!!!

          0
          0

This is what is so interesting about him and what I have to pay more attention to. How he acts on stage vs. The shadows.

      3
      1

The library scene was an interesting switch. Brutal and violent and I hate the writer for turning him into that kind of character, but that was a great switch ngl. He was watching Dan Oh laughing with a guy in the shadow and the scene switched to stage and suddenly we saw him slamming Haru against the bookcase!

        2
        1

Yes, the shadow version had a problem with it but the stage version became violent. Also, is the writer adopting Haru into the story? Why would Haru the unamed extra with no face be a trigger for one of the supporting characters?

          1
          1

We were discussing this on discord – how it’s interesting that the writer seems to have taken an interest with Haru already! This was the fairy’s warning to Dan Oh.

Anyways he probably still remains a no face when the altercation happened, but I guess the trigger was Dan Oh’s attention was on another guy, and not Baek Kyung. Writer must think it was okay to hurt him to show Baek Kyung’s jealousy because he is an extra with no face and name….

            3
            0

I like Kyung but why is he so mean if he’s just a shoujo character? Isn’t it too much? What is his role in something like BOF, a guy that is mean to a rich sick girl because his father tells him to please her, while he secretly cares for her but is afraid to get closer because she might die? Isn’t this way complex for BOF? Maybe he only cares for her off main stage? What is his official story in the comic? How come he can watch things between n13 and her if the other guy is not a part of the main comic?

    2
    2

I keep thinking the same. What is the writer trying to show. That he is a victim of parental abuse?
      Stage:
I think his anger is on his father and he is just taking it out on her. He is also embarrassed that he has to be in this relationship because its beneficial to his father.
May be he started being nasty hoping Dan-Oh will break off the engagement on her own accord? But instead she kept liking him which made him more angry. Does the writer have a redemption arc for BK – and how will that work out. Would her death make him guilty?
I really want to know where the writer is going with this.
Shadows: Everytime he is in the shadow, he has shown signs of caring. He delivers his dialogues in the same ‘nasty’ manner, but he always checks on her hospital visits/health. He even asks her why she is in a summer camp when she should be taking care of her her health first. His reactions in the shadows have shown a lot of awareness.
When in the shadows he is able to see the other characters like everyone else.

      3
      1

He is a victim but he is also mean towards her, partly because he envies her loving parent, and her seemingly easy way to deal with liking someone, partly because he blames her for allowing this fake engagement to go on even though she knows he doesn’t like her the same way. He feels a bit guilty tough, maybe because he isn’t such a moron that would treat a girl this badly, but he can’t help himself because he is not strong enough yet. He also seems to like her somehow and feel jealousy when the other guy enters the scene. Which leads me back to my original question, he is way too complex for a shoujo and I don’t know what is his role except maybe to be a villain? I confess I like him way more then n13 but I know he is not the lead! Very meta.

        2
        1

I agree with the ‘he blames her’ part. He thinks the situation came to this point because she kept playing the part without taking his feelings into consideration.
We these boys all handsome and ripped, we tend to forget these are high school kids!
BK isn’t strong enough to face his father yet. He wants to break free from his father, yet he is unable to. Even his school/dating life is dictated by his father. A very frustrating situation to be in. If you notice, BK often uses the words ‘frustrating’ and ‘annoying’. He never says he hates her or anything else.

According to other beanies, his character is not this fleshed out in the webtoon. He was a simple ‘jerk’. The writers have changed BK for the drama. I guess its because of casting LJW.

          1
          1

That makes a lot of sense! They made him so interesting he became out of character for a comic like that and the actor is doing a fine job. I dropped that other show that made him popular but I can understand what people like about him kkkk.

            1
            0

The comic story is actually not a fluffy romcom as we thought. We are just at the start of the story where the main leads started to fall in love. Like other stories later it will turn serious. Ex Dan Oh has a heart condition, Baek Kyung is abused by his father and the other characters also have their own “secrets”

      1
      0

My heart skipped a beat whenever Kyung betrayed her care for Dan-oh in Shadow scenes. But at the same time, I winced at his Stage persona. He is too mean. I’m afraid that he will hate himself so much the moment he awakened, especially since he seems to have real feelings toward Dan-oh.

    2
    1

The number of times he has inquired after her health. He is so accustomed to being the jerk, that even when he wants to show care during the ‘shadow’ he delivers it the exact same way. He is supposed to be frustrated and annoyed with her, so he keeps going back to that same feeling everytime he seems DanOh.
I am so dreading his awareness . Its going to hurt so much.. so much..

      2

I feel like a traitor but even I never saw it coming. I completely fell off the BK ship when Haru appeared on my screen. He was just….so soft and pure. It also doesn’t help that Rowoon is BEAUTIFUL. Lee Jae Wook ur still my forever no.1 but this is gonna be a tough one babe.

YAS A BAEK KYUNG CONTENT ON THE FAN WALL! I needed this post to motivate me to be productive so that I could spam the fan wall with more Baek Kyung content later!

I think it was pretty obvious that he is gaining awareness after Danoh became different because we need to admit that he only has eyes for Danoh but the writer is making him a BIG jerk. He doesn’t deserve that treatment! *swears at the writer like Danoh*

Extraordinary You

Baek Kyung starts to notice – Is he becoming self-aware?

And slowly you start noticing that he is noticing her.
And then there is a curiosity in his face.
He walks towards her and even makes small talk!!
And finally, he says ‘You are acting weird these days’!!

How does he know? He is not supposed to remember the shadows!! Is he already aware or is he turning?

What will his personality be when he becomes aware. Will be be the cold-tsundere with a soft heart or will he be different..

          💔💔💔

They better shift the focus to the male lead and he better be an awesome character so this pain can ease a bit.

          0

My take: he’s turning. After the main characters get into their main story line (love triangle between Nam-Joo & Joo-Da & Do-Hwa), he get less appearance as the supporting cast. Then he spends more time in the shadow and I believe its the reason one starts becoming self-aware.

    13
    0

I actually didn’t notice this! Great catch!

I feel like this show will make me very sad. Putting to one side the seeming futility of what Dan-oh’s trying to do (what she’s doing is the equivalent of rebelling against God!), our main male leads may go through a lot of heartache. In the spotlight, Baek-kyung will have fake Dan-oh’s affection and Haru will be out in the cold; from the look of things, the dynamic is going to be reversed in the shadows. I’m gonna be feeling bad for one and happy for the other throughout! =(

    8
    2

I know right! This show is affecting me quite deeply. It’s quite sad. You can’t root for the ‘real’ characters as readers, since we are also privy to the shadows.
How much ever I prepare for the heartache it’s going to hurt bad isn’t it??

      6
      1

The funny thing is that, once we see the “main characters” from the perspective of the extras and side characters, our opinion of them changes completely. We going from being all anguished for Candy because of the bullying she faces, and from being all “whew biker-man is a hotty”, to thinking the “main characters” are just a bunch of weirdos who think the world revolves around them. Dan-oh’s internal commentary during spotlight really leads to a sense indignation over the side characters becoming instruments/means for the main characters. I don’t know about anybody else, but I already kinda hate Joo-da, even though it’s not her fault.

I just hope Haru and Dan-oh get a happily ever after (although I’m not holding my breath; rebellions against God never end well).

        11
        0

Rather than rebellion against God, I see her movement as a fight for her freedom. She wants full control of what she can think and do for herself. God gave freedom to his creation – freedom to serve him or to not serve him. If we are to use analogy, I would say she is like a colony wanting to separate from the country owning it to form its own. Her life, her rules.

I read somewhere that writers do listen to what their characters tell them. Episode 2 in and we’ve seen that something had changed already as a result of her fight – she didn’t break a leg; received a scrapped knee instead. Fairy tells her it’s moot point, but it’s little things like this that keeps one’s hopes up.
      https://www.dailywritingtips.com/becoming-your-characters/

      9
      1

Well, presumably every rebellion against God – whether by the Titans, by Satan, or whomever – is also a fight for freedom (from God) by the rebels.

It might depend on the religious tradition you come from! Many religions – including various sects of Christianity like the Presbyterians – believe there is no freedom of will; everything is preordained, and the belief that one is the master of her fate or captain of her soul is just a mirage. But even in traditions where God gives His creations freedom, I’m not sure one would earn anything but His wrath by trying to use that freedom to defy His designs for the world, designs which He has already begun to put into motion.

I would accept the territory analogy, but with a proviso. She is like a territory that is dependent on the broader political entity of which it is a part for essential economic assistance yet wants to be independent while receiving that assistance (she’s like Quebec! LOL).

All of this is really convoluted way of getting at a core difficulty of Dan-oh’s situation; she wants to make her own choices, but her entire existence continues only at the sufferance of the mangaka and its hard so far to see how she could control what happens to her unless this story goes all W on us. I agree 100%, though, that the interesting change in the stair fall scene suggests that things might be changeable (and I oh so hope they are!), but so far all we’ve gotten are changes on the margins (although we’re only 2 episodes in, so I might be extrapolating and reaching a hasty conclusion – I hope that’s the case!).

        2
        0

I felt the same too! I was getting curious and I’m hoping that when he becomes self aware, he isn’t that much of an asshole to our DanOh.. So excited for the writers have in store for our tsundere

    4
    1

I wonder sometimes if he isn’t just saying the lines that he has to say, playing the part that he has to play, but having conflicting feelings underneath.

      2
      0

Good catch! How would he remember unless he’s starting to become aware?

I want to see Haru, but Jae Wook’s character is more fleshed out, & even though the character is a jerk, the actor is fabulous. I hope the changes in the drama are for the better, because I don’t like him in the webtoon at all even after he becomes aware.

I kinda don’t like its stage vs shadows (off stage might have been better)…or they should’ve kept heads & tails.

    I feel like I’m rambling…

    3
    1

Same here! I like the “heads” vs “tails” thing better because it made more sense to me…

      3
      1

I am ok with the stage and shadows – Its easier to represent on a visual medium I suppose. Also, when a stage event is happening we have actors on the sidelines who can do whatever they want since they are in the shadow ( the playground scene where the main leads are flirting in the stairs while our FL is doing her thing). All this can be represented in a single shot with stage & shadows. If it were head and tails I might expect both to not coexist. if that make sense!

        4
        2

I was also thinking that the 2nd lead guy of Secret who becomes self aware has potential to be Danoh’s SML too.

      1

It’s also the fact that out of BK & fairy he’s the only male character she has good conversations with. He seems like a nice friendly guy, no wonder secret readers were felled by SLS

I wonder what is he being always busy about on his phone? It doesnt look like he is playing games. Is he tweeting? Browsing on his facebook newsfeed?

Yes, am wondering too! is he reading the manhwa on his phone. wink..
He is super busy on his phone though..

      0
      0

What if he’s already self aware, and that’s why he’s especially rude to Dan Oh about how she never changes?! 😜 he’s been self aware for a while but decided he can change nothing.

Also ~ what if both Kyung and the SL of the “main” plot fall in love with Dan Oh in the shadow land?

I’ve got a theory as well that Dan Oh is that character in a story that a writer always struggles to write ~ the one created for plot purposes but who is slowly getting harder and harder to write since they seem to want to do their own thing. I haven’t read anything about the webtoon, but my theory is that Haru is the faceless avatar for the writer, his scar something like like a callous from flipping the pages or getting too many paper cuts. And the writer uses his avatar to interact with Dan Oh, the character he can’t control but is falling for…

Anyways, that’s enough crazy theories for one morning. 😘

    5
    2

I refuse to imagine that Baek-Kyung is knowingly rude to her ; ))

I would absolutely love all of them to fall in love with her in the ‘shadows’!

Interesting – At what point does the character gets to become self aware and starts to influence the writer. Or at what point does the writer give the character more agency to write themselves.
The trigger can be both ways..
I love the Haru theory (it being the writer – explains the nameless character). That the writer somehow became attracted to this one small side character in the shadows and its influencing the stage.
We still need explanation on the 2 points
      1) When and how do they become self aware?
      2) What makes the destiny change (like her ending up with a band-aid and not a cast). If Haru is the writer avatar, it makes sense that the story board changed due to the creator.
but I doubt that is the case.

Looking forward to all the theories!!

      6

I think there could be two forces at play here. One is the writer, Dry Squid, who’s already planned out the whole story. He is not self-aware, he’s the manipulator of everything and everyone in the story. He showed Danoh the stage and the puppets. He controls everything. He is fond of Danoh, he pities her, but he knows nothing will change. He doesn’t want anything to change. This is his story, and this is the way he wants it. The other force is Haru. He’s the artist. He got that cut from painting…it looks like a smear of orange paint…maybe it’s not a scar, but a symbol of the fact that he paints? He is drawn to Danoh. He begins to spend more and more time drawing her, detailed sketches of her, and perhaps, that is the reason she became self-aware. He took an interest in her, pored over her sketches, and elevated her role. This brings him to conflict wuth Dry Squid. That’s why Dry Squid was so upset when he discovered that the guy Danoh has been so curious about is Haru. He recognises him. Haru has pasted pictures and sketches of Danoh in the library. So the artist’s control centre is the library, the writer’s is the kitchen. They are not allowed to encroach on each other’s territories, as in each has absolute control in each realm. But the sketches are leaking into the kitchen

        3
        1

The edges are blurring, the writer is receiving warning signs that his story is being infiltrated by the artist. Bith are essential to the plot, but both have to be in total agreement. The artist is rebelling, and in that last scene, it seems he has decided to follow his heart, and not his duty…he is not going to let the girl he likes be treated so shabbily anymore, he’s made a stand, and changed everything…compare that to the drowning scene where he just stood by passively.

          3
          4

This is a really interesting theory. Does it very often happen that the writer and artist are two different people? The only manwhas that I read have a single author/artist.

            2
            0

@lindag I read someone putting forward this possibility on a website. I think it would explain the conflict between the two? I’m not sure how it works, but it makes sense to have a writer hire an artist to draw his story, don’t you think? But the artist would be guided by whatever the writer wants. Or maybe there are two writers?

            1
            0

@yyishere, I think you are on to something, but I also have trouble seeing Dried Squid Fairy as the writer. Maybe he’s the publisher? Then his interest would be to see a successful story get published, and keep the author in line. So he could be getting upset because he sees the story going off track. It would explain why he is a little remote from the characters and keeps insisting that nothing can change, why he has the stage and explains how things work. For him, it would be important to keep things working that way. He just doesn’t come across as a creative force, or the creator of those characters who come to the kitchen to talk to him.

I read a comment asking if Haru Was the writer? So it got me thinking. What if Haru is the writers avatar? Like how Hitchcock made cameos in his films. Always in the shadows, observing. Not in the main plot line but always there. I mean have you seen Harus sketches. I don’t know where I am going with this but I like your theory.

Extraordinary You

Auto Enrollment : Second Lead syndrome!

You know, how against all reason you fall for the bad guy?
You know he is a jerk, he says nasty things to the female lead, yet you find reasons. You start dissecting the micro expressions and wonder may be deep down he cares?
And then in one moment, he shows a look of concern, runs down the stairs and carries her to the infirmary. And you start shooting heart eyes. And then a simple ‘How is your leg? Is it okay’ completely sends you to the SLS point of no return.
Damn it, I got it bad!! this is going to be hard.. so damn hard.. But, I don’t care. I shall endure it for you LJW!!

Dan-Oh’s mind voice is everything!

Dan-Oh’s mind voice is the collective drama viewers voice who have been asking these questions for centuries!

Break-up scene: The jerk is rude and you are crying? Yes, Why?

Every awesome second male-lead out there

There is never a scene where the characters are seen without their phone, but almost never have it during a crisis!!

Also gotta mention how much I’m in love with Kim Hye Yoon’s versatility. She can switch stage and shadow during her conversation with Bae Kyung and does it with so much ease! Both scenes were delivered very well. I felt for her when she was tearing up because of Bae Kyung’s rejection and then she cringe and hate stage self at the same time for reacting that way!

    5

Auuugh I hate auto correct. Always fixes my Baek to Bae… I mean I know he’s a bae, but stop fixing his last name, phone!!! 🤬

This show heavily relies on her acting chops and boy does she deliver!! Even without the sound effects I can begin to tell heads from tails ( stage vs shadow).

I have 25 screenshots of BK for reasons unknown to me (who am I kidding). He really can be a nasty villain eh? I felt the disgust in his face when he treated her poorly.

I’m not judging, blue! 😜 Post them 25 screenshots on your wall, so we can all 😍😍😍 at him! Share the goodies.

And I knooooow! It’s gonna suck so much once he figures out who he is and how much of everything he feels, thinks and acts are pretty much dictated to him.

I’ll be curious about how the romance with Haru will play out. Dan-oh is already self-aware (in the sense of being aware of how cliched people can be when they’re romantically involved with other people) and I wonder if this will transfer over to how she behaves with Haru.

Extraordinary You:
The pilot episode was solid. Kim Hye Yoon carries this role with so much exuberance that within no time you are rooting for her.

The casting is on point and the meta on the typical high school romance (BoF) is hilarious. A3 – awesome casting.

And why this picture? Because Lee Jae Wook!!

😂😂 why of course, no reason needed! 15 mins into ep 2 now and it’s so hilarious. Nam Joo and Ju Da literally glitter and shine ✨ and uri extra is so extra hilarious.

I totally fell for Nam Joo against all reason. Lol. Have to look up this actor.

And Baek Kyung is going to eat his words isn’t he. I hope he gets his awareness too.

      4
      2

🤣🤣🤣🤣 we solely blame the damn creators for this sorcery!

Yep at Baek Kyung. I can see the effect already happening. The drama moves pretty fast at the turn around of events. Bae Kyung talks like an ass when she’s around, but he was also the one who came running down the steps to pick her up and take her to the Hospital in Episode 1! He stayed with till she regained consciousness. Ahhh Mr. Tsundere, can’t wait till you regret all this.

I believe you can see a lot of Nam Joo in a bunch of webdramas! I can’t remember which youtube channel he often acts in but he’s truly charming😉

    1

Wait, how many likes does it take to level up from being an errand boy? I just got here, but looking at those numbers I think I’ll be here forever.

    2
    3

Uh… that’s something we’re still trying to work out.
It’s not just likes you see, it’s a combination of all things, plus an unknown… and not everyone levels up at the same seen stats…

      1
      1

I get that part. But it all adds up to 1000 points and you level up to something, and then later to 2500 and you become something else. Errand boy seems to start at 5000. I would have thought it would change again at 7500 or 10000, but it looks like it could be 15000? I wonder why…. I remember seeing a table of levels and points with an explanation of following/followers way back when the new look debuted, but I’ve never been able to find it since then. Not that it matters. I just like to know how it works.

        1
        1

I’ve never seen points assigned to each level just the different names for each level.
Some have leveled past Errand Boy with much less than 10, 000 and other have stayed with more.

It’s a mystery wrapped in an enigma or just math no one has figured out yet.

          4
          7

@Beverly *maths I haven’t been bothered figuring out yet haha

Where did you get the points idea from @lindag? I’ll happily take any theory on board, I’ve been following this from when the site first launched.
Do you mean an arbitary unseen points based system, or a points system based on likes?
The points system can’t be based solely on likes or @pakalanapikakekake and I wouldn’t be at the same level.
But an unseen points based system is likely, I just haven’t been able to work out what the points per level is yet, and what equates to more points at certain levels (e.g. rate of posting, recap comments vs fanwall comments, links shared, word count and more, along with following, followers and upvotes).

And I’ve never seen such a table, but then the archive list of levels page was also removed. I didn’t think Db would ever tell us outright how the levels work lol, it’s fun to guess.

            1
            0

I always thought it was a points system based on a secret algorithm that Mary refuses to share, one that takes into account all our site activity. But we don’t know for sure.

Also @lindag, the fact that Errand Boys remain Errand Boys for an eternity is something that drives most Beanies mad at some point. Errandboyphrenia is a known Beanie malady. We have frequent epidemics, although at the moment I think there is only one sufferer.

            2
            0

@sicarius, they explained it way back in the beginning just before or just after the new site debuted, and they explained the levels in that post. Each like counts as 1. Each person you follow counts as something like 10 or 25. And each person who follows you counts as something like 50. Not sure if posts count for anything. They might. The points seem to be the one and only purpose of following, since nothing else happens when you follow someone or get followed.

            1
            0

How could I be the only one to remember that post????

            2
            0

Sorry, wasn’t thinking straight – posts also count as 1.

            2
            0

I don’t know how you could be the only one haha.
Maybe I’ll make and actual post about it to see if anyone else remembers.

The same problem still remains though, if you use this points based system.
If we use your numbers, idk if they’re true or not, but let’s just use them (and use 25 for every person you follow), then I have a total number of points of 110 279.
@pakalanapikake would have a total number of points of 38 570.
But we’re on the same level, and not only that, she leveled up before me.
            So why?
Unless things like recap comments were worth more than normal comments, and bonuses such as rate of posting, or posting streaks or something like that also exist, it can’t be as linear as the way you’re suggesting.
(we also do know that being a Minion means you level up more, so Lollypip is highest because she does the most recaps. I also suspect traffic on your articles as a Minion helps you level up).

            2
            0

It takes a long time. I became an errand boy in Feb this year. I expect to me here another 6 months at least.
There are many with lot of more comments/likes who are still errand boys.
The more active you are in recap threads the better your chances are.

Rookie Historian Finale :
527-FC987-F465-4-BE9-8-B83-E3-EDFE1849-F0
As this drama comes to an end, I realize what a wonderful journey it has been. This drama had heart.

It managed to carefully tread many topics – women’s rights, women in workplace, new thinking in a world, privilege and power, a women’s choice of life/marriage etc, without ever sounding preachy or in your face. The show did have the fluff yet with meaning and depth. There was not a single character that felt unnecessary. As the drama progressed we understood every single character and all of them were memorable. Be in Yang or Min or our Rookies. They all stood strong by themselves. They were not created to serve someone’s purpose.

I am happy with the way the show wrapped up. The dethroned king gets to clear his name, and Jin does what he is best at -rule and Rim is a travel blogger, like me, with no readers/visitors 🙂
And our historians are writing history while quietly creating their own history.

Yes to all of this! The reasons why I love this show.
Although I feel the conflicts are resolved a bit too easily, I’m really happy with the ending. The characters got to live the life they wanted, especially Rim who is living his dream life.

    5
    1

I too thought the conflicts got resolved quickly, but I also think it’s been brewing for a long time. Queen Dowager has been spear heading this whole thing. With or without Dowon she would have gone ahead with her plan.
I think it’s a decent closure and am happy. Glad it didn’t end a tragedy 🙂

When camellia blooms :
Finally, back to watching dramas.
Episode 1: it’s amazing how good actors can elevate the show to a totally different level.
Such a pleasure to see Kang Ha-Neul after so long. He plays the awkwardly confident-doofus-like country bumpkin with so much confidence I can’t believe it’s the same actor who has played these serious roles. His body language is just incredible.
Gong Hyo-Jin brings the quiet grit beneath her shy personality with such ease. It didn’t take much to get her character. She just shines quietly like a delicate candle even when the wind blows.

I don’t know where the story will go. But am so happy to watch these two actors on screen.

How many times will you break it. I think Cha Eun-woo delivered the pain, anguish and heartbreak so well and broke my heart multiple times.

    3
    2

He did. Some Beanies have been writing him off but I think he has been great in this series.

      5
      1

Strangely, I feel he delivers very well on the heavy emotional scenes – like the king banning him from writing, when he faced the king after protecting the Frenchman and now this.
It’s the light cheeky or haughty parts which feel spotty or looks like he is acting.
He does puppy very well though 🙂

        1
        1

Yes he does angst and puppy very well indeed. 🙂

The cheeky parts are a hit-and-miss but thankfully he delivers with emotional scenes, or else it will lose the emotional impact it should have.

      Have fun!!
This and Mononoke and my most favorite Miyazaki movies.

      1
      1

I think this and Spirited Away are my favorites. I took my family to see Spirited Away last year when one of the local theaters did a Miyazaki movie event.

        1
        1

Yes I too watched Spirited away last year in a theater 🙂
I love that movie too. But Mononoke’s underlying nature/environment theme is something I personally love in Mononoke.

          1
          1

I think it’s been too long since I saw Mononoke, and I may not have understood/appreciated it fully for what it was when I first saw it many many years ago, so it definitely deserves a rewatch on my part before I say anything. I just love Spirited Away because I love how Miyazaki effortlessly weaves Japanese folklore/spirituality/tradition in with modern fantastical elements and yet makes the stories universal and accessible. (This is probably why I love Totoro so much as well.) But now I think I need to rewatch Mononoke to see if my appreciation for it has changed as I’ve gotten older (and because the world is literally on fire).

Hah I watched it raw and will watch again tomorrow when some of it is subbed. Looked like we got trolled!!!!!
But next week – what to we watch? I hear Pleasantly Surprised is good, but it is only on the non-legal sites.
hmmmm – let’s chat later. The only thing I didn’t care for is that it looks like 321 got some kind of redemption arc (along with the porsche) and became kind of a nice guy. ughhhhhh

Rookie Historian:
Oh my! The king is so petty and shot himself in his foot. I died laughing seeing his struggle to wake up at 4am while everyone else managed it reasonably well.
And GHR telling the petty sneaky king ‘if you are trying to get me drunk it’s useless, I have very high tolerance’. Omo!!
And Prince Rim bringing breakfast to her workplace, how can I not love him!!

The scenes with the king were glorious and I was laughing so hard. The way he was whining to GHR was even better.

    6
    1

Am laughing just thinking about him whining ‘how long do you want me to be angry’!!
So if left to himself the kings revenge would be so petty and nothing murderous.
That explains why Rim is still alive. If second state knew the secret am guessing he would have gotten him killed.

Ok, I didn’t think 321 can stoop any lower. Making her admit she slept with another man in front of her father?? Really? That’s how you deal with your personal issues.
Even his father was embarrassed by him. And after that, you would think he would accept the reality. Nope. He continues to pursue her. Like a woman will come back to you after your told your father it’s over and father ended your relationship for you!!!??

Is office romance a crime in Taiwan? Why are they making such a big deal out of it. Looks like Clingy will never get the message. Never.

I re-watched the 1 ep today. Che Kuhan is so good)

    1
    0

This show was subbed so fast today! When clingy and 321 walked into the new office I wanted to throw my laptop across the room. Really. REALLY????? But 321’s boss finally spelled it out for him and put him in his place.
A good man (CK) never compares himself to another.

And FINALLY we learn WW’s reluctance to accept CK is that she is worried for HIS career- not herself. Frustrating episode in many ways, but making progress.

Oh and how cute are Ka Fei and Du Wai (aka David)! Let’s start with a sizzling weekend why don’t we? hahahahah – at least someone is getting laid.
sigh. What am I going to do with my Friday night’s after next weekend? I come home and immediately watch BWGM raw!

    2
    2

Yes. Thanks to his boss for throwing some water on his face, calling out on the late/sloppy apology for the kiss and telling him why he lost the girl. If only he had the ability to self reflect.

How much I love WW and CK. They got each other’s back. They may have never dated but I love how much they get each other and care for the other.

I never thought of Kefei and DuWai as a couple. But if Kefei sees something in him an all for it.

Lol. One more week and this will end. I can’t believe this is the drama I dropped after episode 1!!

      2
      1

Damn I wasn’t expecting that water throw! Haha! Hopefully he will learn his lesson – we can only hope. What are we going to do after next Friday?!? 😫

        2
        1

That was a surprise to me as well – she has been so suggestive and kind of flirty with him – at least it seemed that way.
However that is no excuse for him to force a kiss on her!
ugh…. and that look on his face when the three of them walked into the office.

          1
          5

Are you ready for the finale tomorrow?
I have a feeling I might end up watching raw first :))

            1
            0

Noooooo! I don’t want this to end @mayhemf – I will definitely watch it raw like I’ve done for the past month (as obviously I have NO life)…

Then again, if they continued the story we’d have do continue the pain/agony of watching the two exe’s who can’t get over their failed relationships.
So, at this point, per the preview from last week it looks like we will get a happy ending right?
But I will miss watching this with all of you. We will need to find another drama to watch together…….

            2
            0

Is ma actually dreading it! What if they don’t get together in the end? Judging my the previews showing a wedding scene may not mean they married each other. Ugh! What are we going to do?!?!?

            1
            0

I will be so bummed if it’s not a happy ending. I totally think these two are meant to be together.
Now we know she likes him too.
Yeah the wedding may just be a dream since they showed it in preview.

nonononononooooo it can’t be a dream!! But then why would it have been in the preview if not to keep us watching – the writers surely knew we were/are SO done with clingy and 321.

People at work have NO idea the real reason I’m glad it’s Friday! 😉

I think even the calmest of the soul will want to inflict violence just by looking at 321 and Clingy. Why can’t they just date each other and put everyone out of this misery?!?!

Ha ha. True. I hate clingy more because she is messing with the job. I can see how frustrating it must be to work with some one not qualified and throwing air and going on Power trips.
I wish Jessica stood up to her team. I was disappointed in her. She should have had WW’s back and not let clingy dictate the situation.
clingy still thinks that she made CK to this position. Her 10 years of effort was CK. I see why she can’t let go of him.

It is so wrong! She needs therapy!

It was hard to see Jessica cower in front of CK but I loved the wink at the end when CK pushed back.

On another note, I loved the conversation before dinner when he described how work was so stressful for him and he got rid of the stress by (essentially) being kind of a pig to women and drinking.
Until he met WW, and then his world and attitude changed, and he became a better person when he fell for her instead of just pursuing her.

A lot of things made more sense after that speech.

Yes, they are both keepers and good for each other

Oh yes. We finally see why he was like that. We knew he was frustrated with Clingy but to also realize his work situation was rough and his coping mechanism wasn’t great either. I liked that he was honest about it to her. He didn’t sugar coat anything.

I laugh so hard when he is in the scenes. “You’ve just insulted all the eunuchs!”

Same here. He just cracks me up.
The whole ‘Push and Pull’, ‘Hit and cold’ was totally LOL.
thankfully Rim didn’t take that advice and outright told her what is bothering him.

I rewatched the ‘reenacting the morning after’ scene (after the night she sleeps on his arms) so many times. It’s just so hilarious.

That had me laughing way too hard! It’s funny how he still tries to say it’s for a friend when they both know it’s about him and Haeryung lol
